The princess of pop, who started out as the girl next door in Neighbours and is now the highest-selling female Australian artist, has barely slowed down after decades of working in the entertainment and music industry.

“For a long time now, I have tried to find a better work-life balance,” Kylie, 53, says.

The singer, who is in a relationship with creative director Paul Solomons, is expected to make a move home to Australia this year

“I love my work and am as inspired as ever to create and to share so I’m often reluctant to slow down, but having been forced to do so through the pandemic has shown me how beneficial and important it is.”

“I would tell that younger me to try to stress less, trust my instincts and keep a diary.”

“These last couple of years have made me even more conscious of this.

Chatting with us from London, Kylie reflected on what she was like at the age of 25. At the time, she was living abroad in the 1990s and working on her fifth studio album, which had the smash hit Confide In Me

“Twenty-five-year-old me was very busy discovering the world, working a lot, going out a lot and worrying about things which seem trivial to the older me,” Kylie says.

They are lessons the singer, actress and businesswoman tries to abide by as she forges a still busy, but slightly quieter path.

“We were all so grateful and humbled to still be able to create and have that to focus on,” she says. “Among all the uncertainty and that feeling of a great void, I threw myself into the project.”

While she hasn’t announced any local television work yet, Kylie says she is open to returning to our screens.

Kylie, who also has her own beverage range, Wines by Kylie Minogue, hints at expanding into a new product range this year as well.

Kylie has also spent the past year working on the re-release of her fragrance Darling, which she describes as “a timeless floral with luscious notes”. She loves how a scent can transport us to another place and time. “It evokes so many memories and at the same time, it’s effortlessly creating new ones,” she says. “I hope the fragrance brings feelings of confidence andThejoy.”singer will release a new fragrance this year called Disco Darling.

“I find inspiration everywhere and can’t wait to see where my fragrance journey takes me and what I can share with you all. I’m passionate about home fragrance so watch this space.”

In recent years, Kylie has focused on working on her music, and she released her 15th studio album, Disco, in 2020.

“My family and I lived in a court with plenty of other young families with kids, so my brother, sister and I would spend hours playing with neighbourhood friends,” she says. “Bikes, rollerskates and the holy grail — the pool in someone’s back yard.”

She has already started work on her next album, so hopefully a new Kylie tour with some local dates won’t be too far off. To look after herself when she’s on the road, Kylie tends to lead a quiet life. “My focus is to stay as well as possible, so I eat well, rest when I can and don’t go to noisy environments, as talking over noise is literally the worst for a singer,” she says.

“My focus is to stay as rest whenas possible, wellso I eatwell,Ican and don’t go to noisy environments.” to be closer to parents Ron and Carol and siblings Brendan and Dannii. Summer in Australia evokes memories of long days, hot nights and catching up with family and friends, as Kylie reminisces about growing up in Melbourne’s outer suburbs.

“Disco has been a part of my life since I was about 10 years old,” she says. “The inspiration for this album was during the ‘Studio 54’ section of my Golden tour. It was the penultimate section of the concert, and it was so fun and cool. I knew then that I wanted to expand upon that and explore and pay tribute to disco.” However, she adds that trying to work on a new album during the pandemic with lockdowns and restrictions did have its challenges.

“I don’t normally have much time to devote to acting, but I’m always intrigued by what the next role will be,” she says. “I adore being back on set, having the opportunity to not be ‘Kylie’ and to lose myself in a character.”

When you use a shimmery bronzer, it adds light to areas that you are trying to shade, which is counterproductive. Instead, only use a highlighter on the high points of the face. Going lighter for summer is a common hair goal. Colourist, stylist, educator and Salon Mace founder Zebulen Howell says lightening options have improved greatly in recent years. “These days you can gradually lighten your hair and it still looks amazing after each session. You don’t even have to use bleach as it’s possible to lighten the hair with a high-lift tint,” Zebulen says. “I’m anticipating a lot of requests for bright blonde faceframing highlights this summer and a natural root that allows your hair to grow seamlessly and blends beautifully into creamy bright ends.”

Bronzed, glowy skin is one of Jade Kisnorbo’s signature looks, which is why The House of Wellness beauty expert knows how to perfect a bronzed base.

DON’T ABOUTFORGETYOURHAIR

Flawless make-up begins with well-prepped skin, so ensure your face is cleansed, exfoliated and moisturised before applying make-up. “When you’re creating a bronzed look, you’re invariably adding layers of make-up through contouring, highlighting and bronzing, which can appear cakey if you’re not approaching it the right way,” Jade says.

A similar approach can be taken when fake tanning or getting a professional spray tan. Bare Bronze Studio founder Ally Shahien says a realistic tan can be achieved by prepping the skin and choosing the best colour base for your undertone. “Patchy, uneven tan comes down to not preparing your skin adequately,” Ally says. “Prior to tanning, have a shower, avoid fragrances and ideally exfoliate the night before. To prevent the tan from fading unevenly, be sure to moisturise daily.”

“To prevent this, use two different foundation shades to add dimension, and sculpt the face so you’re creating a flawless base and contouring at once. Doing this cuts time and reduces unnecessary layers of make-up and product build-up.”

A GOOD BASE

The House of Wellness 17 style notes Introducing a statement lip is one of the easiest ways to transform your everyday make-up into an elevated evening look. Beauty expert Jade Kisnorbo explains how to achieve night-time glam in five simple steps. 1 A bold lip is a quick and effective way to take your make-up from day to night. “The key to a bronzed look comes down to picking the right bronzer undertone for your skin. Finding the right shade that doesn’t sit too orange helps to create that natural sun-kissed glow. Also, it’s actually better to pick a product that isn’t too pigmented — one that you can build up so that it blends seamlessly into the skin and not look muddy.”

“Pink is feminine, healthy and flattering when applied correctly,” Jade says. “Not everyone is a pink lip beauty lover but when (pink is) pressed in with a cream product to the cheeks, I really feel it finishes so many gorgeous beauty looks.”

20 The House of Wellness

Nicole says one of her favourite ways to introduce pink into make-up is with blush. “Don’t be scared of pink blush,” she says. “While ’80s draping (using blush to contour the face) is trending at the moment, a lighter application on the cheek creates a far more subtle effect.”

WORDS

Bronzed glam has been the go-to summer look for years, but shades of pink are switching things up this season. From statement lips and pretty eyeshadow to neon eyeliner and feminine blush, make-up artist Nicole Aquilina and The House of Wellness beauty expert Jade Kisnorbo share their tips on how to embrace the trend. The power of perfect blush Blush might seem like a straightforward product, but how it’s placed can either lift the face or drag your features down, so it’s good to know how to apply it.

A pink statement lip is the ultimate summer look, especially when paired with a bronzed, glowy base. According to Nicole, contouring isn’t necessary to achieve a glamorous bronzed effect.

BRUNDRETTCHARLOTTE

“I’m not huge on contouring and I rarely contour my clients. If they ask for a more chiselled look, I’ll use the bronzer to help add that definition because bronzer can also add shape to the face,” she says.

A different kind of pink eye Pink eyeshadow might seem like a bad idea for obvious reasons, but no, it won’t make you look like you have pink eye or bloodshot eyes (but some antiredness eye drops can’t hurt).

“One way to modernise and lift the mood with your make-up is with a graphic eyeliner, and pink in particular is one of the most flattering colours for all eyes, whether they are brown, green or blue,” Jade says. Nicole says a nice way to introduce pink into your makeup, if not for a little blush, is a pink cream eyeshadow.

“It doesn’t have to be a bright pink either. For a more subtle take on the trend, a nice rosegold eyeshadow can appear pink enough. Swipe it on with the finger and you’re good to go.”

For best results, Al and Melissa suggest keeping some products in the fridge for that extra refreshing burst after a scorching day outside.

“Menthol has a real cooling, almost like an astringent, effect,” A’kin learning and development business partner Melissa Jarrett says.

“It contains anti-inflammatory properties, and it has a high water content that can help hydrate the skin,” Al says.

Plants with a high water content, such as cucumber, leave skin feeling nourished on a hot day.

ICE,BABYICE

As the heat ramps up, there are those of us who would love nothing more than to sit in the shade, sipping frozen margaritas until April rolls around and temperatures start to drop.

The cooling effect comes from menthol, which is the main active ingredient. Menthol expands blood vessels and reacts with TRPM8 thermoreceptors when applied to skin, evoking a chilled feeling around the area. In small amounts, it also has anti-inflammatory properties and is used to treat skin rashes.

“Cucumber goes about cooling and soothing, and really refreshing the skin,” Melissa says.

Sadly, it’s not always possible to avoid those 40C days altogether. That’s where science and nature can help get us through the summer months with cooling skincare and beauty saviours.

HYDRATING HEROES

THE BIG CHILL When it comes to the ingredients to look for, peppermint tops the list. Peppermint essential oil is extracted from a plant variety that is a cross between water, mint and spearmint.

Aloe vera also helps you maintain your cool, particularly when too much time has been spent in the sun. “Aloe vera is known as nature’s medicine plant,” PharmaceuticalsPlunkettaloevera brand manager Al Brown says. “Once you are sunburnt and you put aloe vera on, it immediately gives you that cooling effect, especially if the aloe vera is highly concentrated.”Thejuicynature of the plant means it restores moisture and calms your skin.

Martha is grateful for opportunities such as being a contestant on Channel 9 show Married at First Sight, which not only made her a household name but also introduced her to her partner, Michael Brunelli, with whom she recently became engaged. With a wedding to plan, Martha takes an open-minded approach to what’s next. “Obviously (babies and marriage) are the natural progression. Might get some jewellery; might have a baby; we’ll just have to see.”

For Martha, her beauty journey started with her mum. “Growing up, she was always very glam and instilled the value of grooming. By my teens, I was fascinated with skincare and would study the skin aisles at chemists and supermarkets. Then I got a job as a make-up artist and that was it for me. I was in my element and nothing else mattered except beauty.”

“One of these ideas went on to become Swipe Up and another was our exciting new hand care brand Fuuccii, which will be launching very soon,” Roj says. Originally from New Zealand but now, like Martha, based in Sydney, Roj (@theroject on Instagram) is a lawyer by day and skinfluencer by night, her luminous skin earning her the nickname Windex. “I wouldn’t say I had a rough skin journey, but I’ve had allergic skin reactions since I was eight that worsened in my teens and ultimately made me the skincare fanatic I am today,” Roj“Socialsays. media helped open my eyes to the fact there were skincare-obsessed people just like me all over the world and I love having a platform to celebrate my passion.”

artha Kalifatidis and Roj Torabi are influencers who hail from very different careers, but their shared obsession for all things beauty has led them to launch a new and exciting podcast together, Swipe Up “It’s not your average podcast; it’s raw and reflective of who we are,” Roj says. “A lot of our inspiration comes from overseas talent like Alexandra Cooper of Call Her Daddy (podcast) fame. She built an empire from being really engaged with her audience and we want to bridge that gap in Australia.”

“Every Chemist Warehouse visit involves me leaving with at least two full shopping bags and I think a lot of our listeners can relate to that,” Roj says. “It was important for us to have a segment that celebrates hidden gems that are accessible.”

Martha says the duo is “really open about sharing all aspects of our “Ourlives”.listeners will have an insight into our relationships, families and everything else going on,” she says. “Even when we’re just chatting, our discussion is almost always beauty-related — from BBLs (Brazilian Butt Lifts) to mascaras — the works. Swipe Up will be driven by beauty because, at the end of the day, that’s who we are; that’s our identity.” The co-hosts will feature regular segments on the podcast, such as the “What we love” partnership with Chemist Warehouse.

44 The House of Wellness A JOKE CAN HURT SOMEONE’S FEELINGS OR BRIGHTEN A PERSON’S DAY, SO HOW DO WE STAY ON THE NICE SIDE OF HUMOUR? WORDS REBECCA DOUGLAS laugh!”memakingyou’re“Stop, muscle?!”youworried“Why,willpulla

L aughter is said to be the best medicine, but many may cringe remembering the times when, in an attempt to be humorous, the line has been overstepped and someone’s feelings have been hurt. Sometimes, this is done on purpose. Many personal jabs and cruel comments are disguised in joke form so the perpetrator can claim they “didn’t really mean it” if they are called out. On the other hand, this power can be wielded for good. A funny remark can be used to relieve tension in the room, avoid undesirable conversations or cheer up a person who’s feeling sad, angry or excluded.

Lighten punchlinethe

Dr Nejad consciouslyrecommendsexamining how you can bring more humour into your life. She suggests exploring how you can consume comedy across various formats such as live shows, podcasts, songs, books, comics — even YouTube animal videos. You can also set aside dedicated time in your diary for laughter to improve your overall health and happiness.

A good sense of humour is linked to a longer life, both in overall health and resistance to fatal infections.

Social scientist Associate Professor Lauren Rosewarne says there are also benefits in helping us to fit in with society and with groups of people generally. “We like to amuse other people and make others laugh — it enhances our selfesteem and makes us feel like we’ve been well-received,” Assoc Prof Rosewarne says. “Humour is a way to appear likable and also a means to diffuse tension.”

One of the classic rules of comedy is to “punch up”, meaning people who are wealthy, famous and powerful are considered fair game for ridicule, whereas it’s best not to joke about those who are struggling. Not only would it be unkind to do so, your jokes will not generally be found funny.

“Studies have shown that scheduling laughter in your life, including laughter therapy or laughter yoga, can help to boost mood, reduce stress, and strengthen your immune system,” she says.

A Norwegian study reported a good sense of humour is linked to a longer life, both in overall health and resistance to fatal infections. Interestingly, the effect appears to be stronger in women than men.

“Humour can be helpful to relieve distress and lighten the mood in more serious situations, especially when you have a personal relationship with someone,” Dr Nejad says. “If you are tempted to use humour only to diffuse tension for yourself, think twice. Choose instead to be respectful and considerate of others’ feelings.”

But when seeking to lighten awkward or sombre occasions, such as a funeral or when someone is in hospital, it is important to be mindful of whose discomfort you are seeking to soothe, Dr Lillianclinical psychologistNejadsays.

“We should never ‘punch down’,” Assoc Prof Rosewarne says. “We shouldn’t be seeking to make jokes about someone less powerful. We should also avoid making light of things that people are often insecure about such as appearance, or centring our humour around sensitive topics such as religion, sexuality or race, unless we know our audience very well and know how our material will be received.”

The House of Wellness 45 in focus

It is OK to use self-deprecating humour as an easy way to avoid offending others, but beware of putting yourself down too much, even in “Self-deprecatingjest. humour is practically in the DNA of all Australians,” Dr Nejad says.

Healthy humour Research has shown laughter has several health benefits, including alleviating stress and anxiety. It releases nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels and lowers blood pressure, and reduces the risk of clotting and cardiovascular illness.

“It has a down-to-earth quality, and it’s a great way to express that you don’t take yourself too seriously. This type of humour can often make others feel more comfortable around you, but it can be problematic when self-deprecation is used to minimise your accomplishments and achievements, and diminish yourself in order to fit in.”

Conflict strategist Sarah Blake says living in a high conflict environment, where our stress levels and heart rates are soaring, means that — for many of us — our buckets are empty.

In 2013, Jason Sotiris was told his eldest daughter, Angela, then only a year old, had a 20 per cent chance of surviving a rare type of cancer. The stress that followed took a huge toll on his family, the Sydney dad of three says.

Jacqui intends to take her European holiday with her husband, Michael, and their two daughters after they had to

A journalist for the past two decades, Jacqui admits there were moments it became too much — such as when she was trolled on social media by the anti-vaccination community and when she and her husband were trying to juggle home schooling their daughters,

Having grown up in country Victoria and ridden horses for years, Jacqui had always dreamed of owning her own horse. “It was the thing that got me through the pandemic,” she says. “You have to go out and feed them every day and ride them, so that gave me an opportunity to have that window of time where I wasn’t thinking about Covid and I wasn’t being totally consumed by news. It was a great escape for my mental health.”

Jacqui is feeling positive about 2022 and is planning a big European bash for her 40th birthday later this year.

Excited the club had won its first flag in decades, Jacqui sent her best friend a text saying it was the greatest day of her life. Her mate responded it would be — if she also met her husband. “And I met Michael that night,” Jacqui says with a laugh. “I went to a bar on Chapel St (in Melbourne) and Michael was there with a friend I knew and we started talking and that was it.”

“Imet Paul the way many people meet their other halves, in a pub. We realised we’d lived in the same country town as kids, but missed each other by six months when our families moved. I remember thinking that night that he had such a lovely face. He looked warm and open and happy. Paul was one of those people whose face matches their personality. He was very accepting of others, and always had a way of lightening the mood and making people laugh. He was a teacher.Wegot married a few years later and had our son, Joseph. Life was really good, very normal. I was five months’ pregnant with our little girl, Heidi, when Paul was diagnosed with bone cancer, and everything happened very quickly from then. Fifteen months later, he was gone. You’d think a terminal diagnosis gives you time to prepare, but it wasn’t that way for us. We knew Paul was very sick, of course, but we couldn’t believe he would die. I know Paul hid a lot of his pain from us. The kids and I, as well as Paul’s family, had a lot of support around us after he died, but I still felt really lost and quite removed from normal life. I found it very hard to accept I’d never see him again and that Joseph and Heidi would grow up without their dad, and that Paul would miss out on so much. Even years later, I could barely believe it. One thing that really helped was reading about other people’s experiences with death. I’d read

Life After by Evonne Madden, published by Affirm Press, RRP $35. Available from all good bookshops.

“It’s good to realise it’s normal to feel like you’re not coping emotionally, and even basic decisions can seem difficult.”

— Evonne Madden after I put the kids to bed at night and that helped calm me down and to think things through. This will probably sound very morbid but I became quite interested in grief itself. I’d been so lucky in life and had never experienced anything like this before and I wondered how other people dealt with loss. What was going on in their heads? That’s when I started

The House of Wellness 55 interviewing people for Life After. I’d certainly never compare myself to the people in the book — some of them have suffered the very worst of human nature and survived extreme traumas, like Holocaust survivors Abram and Cesia Goldberg — but I have learnt a lot from every single person who agreed to be interviewed. That’s the whole point of this book, really, that people who are struggling with grief can get some comfort reading the stories. I’m very grateful to the 62 people who agreed to be part of the book. Some I’d met or had interviewed before, but most didn’t know me at all. They were all so open and honest about their experiences, and motivated to help others. There are some well-known people in it, like Damien Oliver, Bev Brock, Samuel Johnson and Red Symons, but many are regular people just trying to work things out. Often it was the little things about grief that jumped out at me during the interviews. Robert Gropel lost his wife, Marisa, in tragic circumstances — she died of altitude sickness, in his arms, while they were climbing Mt Everest. Robert talked about how he wasn’t able to throw out Marisa’s conditioner bottle or old running socks. They’re the little things you might obsess over, like what to do with a wardrobe full of clothes. Robert is a very intelligent man who has climbed the highest mountains in the world, and yet those little things were also hard for him. It’s good to realise it’s normal to feel like you’re not coping emotionally, and even basic decisions can seem difficult. I think most people in the book would say that grief takes time. Joseph is eight now and Heidi seven, and there’s so much Paul in both of them. Heidi is a clone of her dad and Joseph has a lot of his mannerisms. We talk about Paul a lot. I want the kids to know all about their dad — his brilliant sense of humour, his kindness, and how much he loved them. They get a lot of that through Paul’s family and mates. I’ve also packed away a lot of Paul’s clothes and belongings. These are for the kids to keep, when they’re older and when they’re ready.”

Of the Covid deaths to date, it’s important to note that only one of those was under the age of 10 (it was reported she had ‘serious comorbidities’) and two were aged between 10 and 19*. Prof Booy stated that of those who were in intensive care at the time of our interview “only a handful” were in pediatric intensive care. That said, a small percentage of children who have a chronic medical illness, such as cerebral palsy, Down syndrome or a chronic heart, lung or liver condition (for example), are at risk of becoming ill. For this reason, Prof Booy says universal vaccinations remain a good idea. Covid-19 vaccinations are now mandatory for all teaching staff in New South Wales and Victoria.

If your kids are worried about returning to school, it’s a natural fear to have, Beyond Blue clinical advisor Dr Grant Blashki explains.“Ourchildrenhave spent the past year worrying if they — or their family or friends — will get Covid, and these fearful feelings are likely to continue as they get ready for their first day back at school,” Dr Blashki says.

Although we know the Delta strain is substantially more infectious than earlier variants of the virus, it is important to remember that (in most cases) it remains a mild illness for our younger population, infectious diseases pediatrician Professor Robert Booy explains. “The majority of children won’t show any symptoms, and some will experience cold-like symptoms, such as a runny nose and fatigue,” Prof Booy says.

It is expected most high school students will be vaccinated by the time school returns for 2022 thanks to the rollout of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines for students aged 12 and up. Those aged 5-11 were set to be approved for vaccination early in the new year.

The House of Wellness 59 “School has a nice natural routine and rhythm to it, and the majority will be relieved and feel grateful to re-enter it.”

“My best guess is most kids will be fine. School has a nice natural routine and rhythm to it, and the majority will be relieved and feel grateful to re-enter it.”

“Keep up the hope — remind kids of the positives that surround Covid. By shifting the way they think about the virus, we help to empower them,” he says.

Keep an eye out for unusual activity or disturbances but, for the most part, remember to focus on the positives, Dr Blashki adds.

Parenting expert Dr Justin Coulson adds high school kids are likely to have a tougher time of it, with mask mandates and conflict over vaccines adding to the mental load. “They might feel terrified of going to school with unvaccinated peers and there could be social fallout related to who is and isn’t double jabbed,” says Dr Coulson, the author of several parenting books including Miss-connection

“You have to take the long view. If your child has missed a couple of terms out of the 52 they’ll enjoy throughout their primary and secondary schooling, it’s not very much in the grand scheme of things,” Dr Coulson says.

Shaun, who grew up on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, was working in corporate lifestyle general management and Blair owned a spray tanning salon in Melbourne. They were good friends and the more Blair talked about the uplift in a self-tanning craze, the more serious they became about launching their own DIY product range.

“We have teams in London, LA and New York, are stocked in 30 countries, selling online in more than 100 countries and have just entered China.’’ The self-tanning process has improved greatly over the years. Bondi Sands has a famous, pleasing, coconut scent and no risk of tan-stained sheets. The company was also the first to introduce tan eraser. The original dark foam is still the top-selling product, followed by the recent Pure range, which contains no dye and is sold in 100 per cent recycled packaging; the facial mist that gives a soft tan in just an hour is particularly popular.

“We believed a lot of the products available had an orange undertone and we wanted to produce a golden tan, so we came up with a new base tone and added more active ingredients to hydrate the skin.’’

is a beautiful country with a beautiful climate, but in summer we need to think ahead and prepare.”

fourth-warmest year on record in 2020, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. Heatwaves affected large parts of the country, and we are likely to swelter again through the coming months.

Sunburn One in four Australians aged 25-44 is sunburnt on summer weekends, according to the Summer Sun Protection Survey. Children are particularly at risk as they have more sensitive skin than adults. It’s UV — not heat — that causes sunburn and DNA damage that can lead to cancer, so sun protection is recommended whenever the UV Index is 3 or higher.

“Signs of sunburn can start in as little as 10 to 15 minutes and include painful reddening of the skin, blistering, itching and peeling,” says Heather Walker, head of SunSmart at Cancer Council Victoria. Longer term, sunburn increases the risk of skin cancer and skin ageing. What to do: Check the free SunSmart app or the Bureau of Meteorology to find out the UV rating. When the UV Index is 3 or higher you need to slip on clothing and slop on broad spectrum, waterresistant sunscreen that’s SPF 30 or higher. Slap on a hat, seek shade and slide on sunglasses.

In summer, one of the most common mistakes people make is not drinking enough water and becoming dehydrated. Signs of dehydration include a dry mouth, headache, going to the toilet less often and urine that is a darker colour than usual.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service estimates there are 3000 cases of snake bite each year, and around 550 of those cases end up in hospital. Most cases involve brown snakes. What to do: To reduce the risk of being bitten, stay away from places where snakes hide, such as holes in the ground, crevices, long grass or under logs. Wear jeans and boots and, if you see a snake, don’t provoke it.

“Stay calm if you are bitten — if you become animated, you spread the poison,” Dr Edwards says. “Gently place a dressing over the bite and don’t apply a tourniquet. Immobilise the arm or leg to prevent the venom spreading, and call 000.”

“Your body tries to control its temperature and fails, so your core temperature starts to climb. If someone has heat stroke, they can be delirious or become unconscious and their skin will be mottled and pale,” Dr Edwards says. Other warning signs are a rapid pulse and rapid, noisy breathing. They may have stopped sweating, too. What to do: “Call 000, drench the person with water and turn up the airconditioning. This situation needs medical help,” Dr Edwards says. Wrap the person in wet towels and place ice packs around their neck, groin and armpits.

“Mild sunburn can be treated with over-the-counter painkillers, bathing the area in cool water or applying cold compresses and drinking water,” Heather says. “Resist the temptation to pop blisters or peel skin, and apply antiseptic cream if skin peels to reduce the risk of infection.”

Seek medical help if you have extensive blistering and pain, headache, nausea, vomiting, fever and dizziness.

health wise Dehydration

“Young children and the elderly can get sick quite quickly. Children might become irritable and upset, or lethargic and not very responsive,” Dr Edwards says. What to do: Drink plenty of water and pass clear urine at least once a day. Avoid alcohol, coffee and sugary drinks that can make dehydration worse. Dehydration can progress to heat fatigue or heat exhaustion. Signs of this are more severe — headaches, dizziness, irritability, tiredness, nausea and muscle cramps. If this happens, rest in a cool place, dampen skin and switch on airconditioning or a fan, Dr Edwards advises, and drink plenty of water. If left untreated, heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke.

Scarring can be more of an issue with this treatment, and your doctor may suggest using a silicone-containing gel for six to eight weeks after the wound has healed.

“The area will blister initially and then weep for a few weeks,” says Associate Professor Stephen Shumack from The Australasian College of Dermatologists. To treat the area, bathe with saline solution and apply a nonstick dressing. “As the crust forms, apply an ointment such as Vaseline. After the crust falls off (around one to four weeks later) then a bland moisturiser can be used for a few weeks,” Assoc Prof Shumack says.

In the case of a severe allergic reaction or anaphylaxis, call 000 and use an EpiPen to administer adrenalin.

What to do: Insects are particularly active at dawn and dusk, so cover up at these times. If you can see the sting, scrape it away using your fingernail or the edge of a bank card and then wash the area. For wasps and ant stings, apply a cold pack and take an antihistamine.

If you have been diagnosed with a skin cancer — whether a basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) or melanoma — it is likely your specialist will take steps to remove the offending skin cells, plus some skin surrounding it. Whether a scar remains depends on the depth and width of the skin cancer, but there are some steps you can take to minimise permanent scarring and encourage healthy skin cell growth. Your skin specialist may use a topical treatment, such as creams or gels that can be applied at home, usually five days a week for six weeks. Topical treatments are usually recommended for superficial BCCs and squamous cell carcinoma in situ (Bowen’s disease).

Some BCCs and early SCCs can be treated by injecting a local anaesthetic into the area and then removed using a curette, after which the skin is cauterised.

In other cryotherapyinstances,—liquid nitrogen — may be applied to remove sunspots and small BCCs.

Caring for stitches “After stitches are removed it is important not to stretch that area of skin for a week or two as the wound will still be fragile. The area is best treated with an ointment such as Vaseline, or a silicone gel formulation for healing scars,” Assoc Prof Shumack says.

The House of Wellness 67

skincarePost-treatment BCCs make up about 70 per cent of non-melanoma skin cancers.

Having one BCC increases the risk of getting another. “It’s vital to apply sun protection, which contains an SPF 50+ product, and cover with clothing or hats to protect from the sun,” Assoc Prof Shumack says.

Teigan Nash, 32, was diagnosed with the inflammatory bowel disease in 2018. She knew very little about the condition at the time, but has learned to manage it and now leads a busy life as a TV presenter

“Ivividly remember being on a work trip to New Zealand and knowing something was wrong. I’d been feeling bloated for a while and I was bleeding when I went to the bathroom, but during that trip the symptoms got worse. They didn’t stop me skydiving over a glacier at sunset and doing other adventurous things, but alarm bells were ringing. When I arrived home, I saw my GP who referred me to a gastroenterologist. He performed a colonoscopy and a few weeks later told me I had Crohn’s disease. I don’t know why I have it and I didn’t really know anything about it, but now I could take steps to treat it. I realised it was manageable. My gastroenterologist helped draw up a management plan that involves taking medication every day and boosting my immunity. I have regular checkups and a colonoscopy every year, too. Crohn’s disease varies in its severity and, at the moment, I feel quite lucky because, for me, it is quite mild. My lifestyle is important in managing Crohn’s, so I eat foods that are good for me — plenty of fresh vegetables, fish and lean meat. I steer clear of gluten and dairy, but I have friends with Crohn’s who are fine with dairy. I exercise, too, and enjoy yoga and running. Exercise gives me energy and it’s part of a healthy lifestyle that helps prevent a flare-up. I’ve learned to listen to my body, too, and I slow down when I need to. Having rest time and avoiding burnout helps me reduce the risk of my symptoms flaring up. I have a strong support network of friends and family, and I’ve met people though Crohn’s & Colitis Australia, too. Some of them have had Crohn’s for 20 years. Talking about it helps me. I think there’s a stigma around Crohn’s because symptoms involve the bathroom — but it’s important to feel comfortable enough to talk about it. It’s also important to see your GP and get checked if you have symptoms. I take Crohn’s day by day. I don’t know if it will get better or worse as time goes on. But there’s a lot you can do to help yourself, and it doesn’t have to stop you living your life.”

LIVING WITH

Crohn’s disease

Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are the two most common types of inflammatory bowel disease. Inflammatory bowel disease affects more than one in 250 people in Australia, and there is no known cause or cure. Crohn’s affects any part of the gastrointestinal tract, but most often affects the small intestine/colon. Typical symptoms include a frequent and urgent need to go to the toilet, diarrhoea, bleeding, loss of appetite, fatigue and weight loss.

Early diagnosis and treatment can greatly improve the lives of people with Crohn’s and colitis.

Vasectomy This is a quick 20 to 40-minute sterilisation operation for men. It is considered one of the most effective forms of contraception, but is very difficult to reverse.

There are many options when it comes to contraception. We ask the experts to explain the different categories to help you make informed choices about birth control

deviceIntrauterine(IUD) Inserted into the uterus, IUDs last up to 10 years, making them a great long-term, fuss-free option that is becoming more popular.

“People are moving away from medical options, often because of ethical concerns and environmental issues. But the reality is that sometimes natural is not better,” she adds.

The pill Taken daily, the contraceptive pill contains two hormones that stop ovulation and is considered to be very effective. The pill can also be used to manipulate your period if you want to skip it every now and then, which adds to its popularity, Dr Moten says.

There are two main categories, according to Dr Amy Moten from the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.

health wise

Condoms Made from latex and available at any chemist or supermarket, condoms are one of the easiest to access and most commonly used contraceptives for all genders. In Australia, research shows 59 per cent of all condom buyers are male, and 41 per cent are female. They are also ideal for casual relationships as they act as a barrier against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

“Health providers will often break down contraception into what we call the long-acting reversible contraceptives, which are the most effective forms of contraception,” Dr Moten says. “But some people have preferences for other forms that are short-term acting that may be more suitable to the individual.”

Using only the hormone progesterone, this works like the regular pill and is 99 per cent effective.

The mini pill

injectionsContraceptive Given every 12 weeks, a contraceptive injection uses a synthetic version of the hormone progestogen, which stops women from producing an egg every month.

Vaginal rings This uses the same hormones as the pill. It is placed high in the vagina and removed for periods. It is just as effective as the pill, but can be fiddly to use.

What method to use?

“Between 2005 and 2015, we’ve seen slight increases of use from 1.6 per cent to 4.5 per cent,” Carolyn says.

Getting frisky can be fun but risky if you don’t want to end up with a baby. There are many methods of contraception that can help avoid pregnancy, but most can only be used by women, says Carolyn Mogharbel, manager of Women’s Health Victoria 1800 My Options. “It’s a frustration that women have to bear the cost — physically, emotionally and financially — of contraception,” Carolyn says. “The reality is the body with the uterus is the body that contraception is made for a lot of time.” At this stage, men have only two options — condoms or a vasectomy — while women have more choice.

Ovulation apps Fertility app trackers basically show when you are at your most fertile, so you can avoid sex at these times. It isn’t a foolproof method and shouldn’t be relied on unless you’re happy taking a risk, Dr Moten says.

Implants Planted in your arm, this small rod releases hormones that prevent pregnancy for up to three years. In 2015, an estimated 5.1 per cent of women used an implant, according to Carolyn. Some women report regular spotting as a side effect.

“Speaking up and clearly while wearing a mask is vital and please don’t get upset if someone of my years asks you to repeat yourself.”

Six years ago this month, I wrote an article in this magazine titled ‘Becoming your parents’.

The House of Wellness 77

It described how, when your living-out-of-home adult kids come to visit, they comment on the TV being inordinately loud (as well as give their opinion of the shows you’re watching) and then they keep talking as they leave the room (to load up your washing machine with their dirty laundry). You respond by telling them to come back and speak face to face if they want an answer. They tell you that you should get your hearing checked and you pout. Just like it was with you and your parents way back when. The article was about recognising that you may have a degree of hearing loss and doing something about it. Well, have you done anything or is the TV just getting louder? I know what you’re thinking, with the pandemic restrictions, we would have just been happy to be able to have our kids visit us, and getting health checks has slipped off the agenda a bit. However, health issues wait for no person or virus. OK, I admit, you’re not alone on the hearing issue, but I wonder if, like me, you have been acutely reminded of your deteriorating hearing during the pandemic while wearing masks for Covid protection. Sure, vaccination is our ticket out, but in risky situations masks are still important in reducing transmission of respiratory infections, along with all the other recommended hygiene and distance

conversing.andneedcommunicationsusalert:Unforeseenmeasures.consequenceWhilemaskswillprotecttheyalsomayimpedeandwetobeunderstanding,creative,whenSomemasksmay muffle your voice, but taking it off defeats its purpose.

Speaking up and clearly while wearing a mask is vital and please don’t get upset if someone of my years asks you to repeat yourself. Then again, maybe this should be a prompt for those of us who are asking someone to repeat themselves to get our hearing checked by an audiologist.

Seriously, I met so many neighbours I didn’t know ‘pre-pandemic’ while out on my daily doggie walk, and that has a positive long-term legacy that will extend beyond the pandemic. I can’t wait for the next neighbourhood street party (yes, I wrote down everyone’s name — including their dog’s)! Covid-19 will continue to be present in our community for some time to come and we need to listen to expert advice on how to live as normally as possible. But Ed believes in keeping it simple when entertaining at home with graphic designer wife Leah, daughter Luca and son Finn. “If you go to a restaurant, yes, choose complicated.somethingButathome, the host is the single most important ingredient so you don’t want to spend the entire evening in the kitchen — it ruins it for everyone,” he says. "People visit to spend time with you.”

“That’s the thing about summer entertaining — when the sun is shining and you have great food and company and a glass of an Australian sparkling in your hand, it doesn’t get much better than that,” he says with a laugh.

From fountains to sea views, water makes us feel good. It’s an intuitive response stemming from the fact that water, which comprises up to 75 per cent of our bodies, is essential to life.

By revealing the health benefits of being in aquatic environments, an emerging field of study is now supporting that intuition with science. It’s worth considering, especially when planning travel that puts nature’s watery wonders within reach.

The House of Wellness 89 SENSEPLACE of Actions speak louder than words for Futuresteading author Jade Miles, who believes in living life as if tomorrow matters and in a way that nourishes the soul

WORDS PENNY HARRISON

Jade Miles is highly attuned to the natural world. Sitting in the morning sun, listening to the pardalotes sing and watching a tiny skink dart about her garden, she can tell when it’s time to start planting; she knows when the start of summer, which she refers to as the “Alive season”, is upon her.

“Your senses are so heightened to things around you when you’re connected to the natural world. There are little moments that activate something in your system,” Jade says.

“It truly does pull you along, and it minimises your sense of overwhelm or apathy.”

Part gardening and part cooking, Futuresteading is also about simple rituals and ideas we can incorporate into our daily lives.

This hopeful movement was forged when Jade’s twin boys, now teenagers, were babies. She and Charlie had been living in their small rural town for about a decade, both working away from home with little involvement in village life. When her car broke down one day, Jade phoned her father and asked to borrow one. He responded by telling her to put the babies in the pram and walk to town to buy some vegie seeds.

90 The House of Wellness live we

It is this sense of optimism and anticipation that Jade lives by on her permaculture orchard, Black Barn Farm, in North East Victoria, which she shares with husband Charlie Showers and their three children. Jade calls it “futuresteading” and this is the title of her new book, a practical and inspirational guide for slow living in a way that values tomorrow. “It’s a made-up word but it’s based on homesteading and has its roots in permaculture,” she says. “It’s about creating a steady future through the decisions we make and the actions we take.”

“Over the next six months, I began to make my place. I found a daily rhythm in watering, weeding and planning around the food I grew,” she says.

“I paced the roads with my two little boys and began recognising faces, starting conversations and saying yes to being involved.”

“It’s an encouragement to live more simply and more in connection with your people and the natural world, and to really redefine what actually matters and what doesn’t and do your darndest to push away the white noise that insists shiny, new things are the answer,” Jade says.

“You don’t have to be living it full time,” she says. “Just take one thing that feels comfortable and you’re attracted to, and really bed it into your rhythm. Then find one more thing. It might be a habit or a ritual or a recipe. And take time this summer, when the days are long, to explore and discover and observe. It’s a time to recalibrate and set your intention for what the new year looks like for you.”

It’s possibly changed him forever.”

“It’s kind of a checklist — if I do this, will biodiversity be encouraged; if I do this, will the person who made it be honoured and paid fairly; if I do this, will it add to the greater sum of my community’s vibrancy; if I do this, will it teach my kids skills that they didn’t otherwise have,” Jade says.

“…I began to make my place. I found daily rhythm in watering, weeding and planning around the food I grew.”

Jade believes it is time for everyone to take action and live their lives as if tomorrow matters — and do it in a way that nourishes the soul. The seven pillars of futuresteading, as she calls them, include finding a sense of awe in Mother Nature, taking time to notice the rhythms of where we live, celebrating the simple things, creating a sense of place and belonging in our communities, supporting local producers, harnessing the joy of small daily rituals and creating your clans.

“It’s reframing our brain to be one that is regenerative rather than one that is extractive.”

Jade saw it as a wake-up call for Australia. “It was pretty visceral,” she says. “Fires are a massive part of our world. We were galvanised as a country and it was different, because for the first time I felt the country came together and said this is actually a calamity that is beyond our understanding and ability to manage.”

It can seem overwhelming amid the daily chaos of life for some, but Jade says futuresteading can be about small changes and it can be implemented wherever you’re living, whether it’s a city apartment or a house in the suburbs.

The House of Wellness 91 Jade’s way of life, detailed over the years through her blog and podcast, has been widely embraced by people struggling to come to terms with climate disasters and the global pandemic. In fact, it was the 2020 bushfires that prompted Jade to write Futuresteading “Charlie had been involved in firefighting for about 15 years,” Jade says. “During the 2020 fires, Charlie was out about nine weeks, six or seven days a week, 16-hour days. Then one day, he found himself caught in a fire storm — the whole crew thought they were going to burn to death.

Preheat the oven to 180C and line a 20cm square cake tin with baking paper. To make the raspberry filling, place the raspberries and chia seeds in a small saucepan over medium-low heat and cook, stirring and mashing up the raspberries with a wooden spoon or spatula for 3-4 minutes, or until starting to bubble and turn jam-like. Stir in the arrowroot or tapioca flour to thicken, then remove from the heat and set aside to cool slightly. Meanwhile, combine 2 cups of oats, half the shredded coconut and macadamias or sunflower seeds in a food processor and blitz to make a fine, crumblike flour. Tip into a bowl, add the remaining oats, coconut, macadamias or sunflower seeds, flaxseed meal and coconut sugar and mix well.

● 225g fine desiccated coconut, plus extra if needed ● 3 tbsp maple syrup, honey, coconut nectar, or maple-flavoured monk fruit syrup for low-carb ● 3 tbsp coconut oil, plus extra if needed ● 1 tsp vanilla bean paste or powder ● zest of 2 lemons, plus 2 tbsp lemon juice

To get started, line a tray with baking paper. Combine macadamias, or cashews, and 180g of desiccated coconut in a food processor and blitz until a fine crumb forms. Tip in sweetener, coconut oil, vanilla and lemon zest and juice. Blitz again to make a thick, wet dough that can be rolled into balls easily. If it’s too dry, add a little extra coconut oil; if it’s too wet, add more desiccated coconut. Place the remaining 45g desiccated coconut in a shallow bowl. Use hands to roll dough into large walnut-sized balls, then coat each ball in desiccated coconut. Place on the prepared tray and transfer to the fridge to firm up for 15 minutes. Enjoy at once or store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 1 month.

Pour in the sweetener, vanilla and coconut oil and, using a spoon or spatula, mix well to form a moist, crumbly granola mixture. Place half the granola mixture in the prepared tin, pressing it firmly and evenly into the base and up the sides with your hands. Top with an even layer of the raspberry filling, then scatter over the remaining granola mixture, keeping it rough and rustic; you want it to resemble the top of an apple crumble. Bake for 20-30 minutes, or until golden brown and crunchy looking on top. Set aside to cool for 10 minutes, then transfer to the fridge to cool completely. Remove the granola slice from the tin and cut into 12 bars or portions of your liking. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.

100 The House of Wellness live we THE RADIO AND TV FUNNYMAN ON THE IMPORTANT ISSUES IN LIFE

It’s a show that makes me want to be better at life and it’s not Squid Game, Ted Lasso or RuPaul’s Drag Race This wondrous, hilarious, joyous and motivational TV show is none other than the story of an energetic little blue heeler and her family — Bluey! When we first went into lockdown in March 2020, my son was 3 and now he is 5. Over that period he has fallen in love with and watched, over and over again, episodes of Bluey, and we have shared many of those viewings. From an inward perspective the show absolutely makes me want to be a better dad. As my TV screen flickers, so does my brain and I start wondering ‘Why don’t I play games like this? Why don’t I have this chilled-out, fun perspective on everything? Why can’t I be more creative with my son?’ Then my thoughts turn … ‘I will be more fun, I will be more creative, I’m going to be just like Bandit’. Bandit is Bluey’s dad. Chilli is the mum and the girls are Bluey and Bingo. Their cousin is Muffin. In fact, one night my son woke me up at 2am (yes, he was in our bed) and said, ‘Dad, is Muffin a boy or a girl?’ ‘Muffin?’ I said, having no idea what he was talking about. ‘You know, in Bluey? Is Muffin a boy or a girl?’ ‘Oh … ummm … a girl, I think.’ ‘OK’. And with that he drifted back off to sleep in some dreamy Bluey bliss. So during the past 18 months, based on various Bluey episodes, I have channelled Bandit as we have played the following games (not once or twice but countless times): Shadowlands, where you try and stay inside tree shadows at the park; Daddy Robot, where I talk and move like a robot while Laddie stands on my feet — I think I enjoy this one more than my son; The Doctor, where I play sick and Laddie fixes me using his medical kit; Grannies, where Laddie dresses up as an old lady and I just laugh along at hisAndimpersonation.thelistgoes on! We’ve had so much fun and it has killed so many hours while locked down together. But, as with any obsession, it can sometimes go too far. Recently, after being inspired by a Bluey episode called Lobster, Laddie asked if he could have lobster for dinner. I thought it sounded like a nice treat and ‘he asked for it’ sounded like the perfect excuse if my wife asked me why we were spoiling ourselves on a Tuesday night. So off I toddled to the local fish shop where I asked for three lobster tails. ‘No worries.’ And with that he toddled off out the back, giving me enough time to clap myself on the back for being such an excellent attentive dad. He pops them on the scales, squints his eyes and says, ‘That’ll be 95 dollars’. To say I was not expecting that is a massive understatement but there was a queue behind me, a starving five-year-old at home and I had to keep my dignity intact. So, as a bead of sweat ran down the side of my face, I paid and walked home praying that the next episode of Bluey isn’t called Caviar! For the record, he took one bite of the lobster and decided he didn’t like it, but my wife and I were happy to pick up the slack. Then there was the time we were playing Yoga Ball — I throw a yoga ball at him and he laughs like a loon. I don’t quite get it but he laughed loudest when I would hit him from behind with the yoga ball and he’d dramatically hit the deck giggling like crazy. I was chasing him just before dinner and I threw the yoga ball, it clipped his back feet, he lost balance and had a run-in with the door. He felt pain, I felt horrible and my wife felt like moving out but it was a rare blip compared to the enormous suite of joy Bluey has brought our household.

The madness of the past two years has meant that we have watched more television than ever. Well, I have. To be fair, when I think about it, I have watched a lot of television over the past 50 years and it has brought me a lot of joy, but there is one show that has stood out from all the rest. It’s a show that has made me double over with laughter and it’s not Seinfeld, The Office or Fawlty Towers It’s a show that has had me waiting anxiously for the next episode to drop and it’s not Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad or Mad Men
