TEN YEARS OF THE SUD DE FRANCE TOP 100 The year is certainly looking brighter, as we again celebrate the best wines from Languedoc, Roussillon and South-West France with the UK trade. Current exports of Sud de France wines are on track to reflect the same steady progress as in pre-pandemic years. Our new 10th edition Sud de France 2022 Top 100 highlights how the region is expanding beyond standard Old World expectations. It is now gaining new success with fruit-driven styles that are still expressive of local terroir and offer memorable drinking enjoyment. Chairman of the judges Tim Atkin MW led 13 top writers and principal trade buyers in blind tasting through 403 entries from 97 producers in April in London. Each year, the judging panel is modified to include a range of senior buyers from high street retailers and wholesalers, alongside MWs and expert writers who spend time immersed in the Occitanie region. Quality and an increase in fine wines were very much openly commented upon, and observations on each wine are passed back to the producers. Competition ran high for the supreme trophies within the Top 100, and for the first time the judges also awarded outstanding commendations to three other reds and two whites. The Sud de France Top 100 gives a snapshot of current winemaking from Occitanie. Its aim is to assist the UK trade to discover, learn and source wines from producers of all styles and scales. For more than a decade, Occitanie wines have climbed consistently higher in UK popularity. The diverse and distinctive terroirs and reliable good value have won steady loyalty. Since the awards were launched in the UK, the range of offerings at tastings has expanded to reflect winemakers’ confidence in prestige wines, as well as challenger styles from organic and sustainable production. The Languedoc and the Roussillon vineyards, part of the Rhône Valley and the South-West comprise the largest production region in the world. We look forward to tasting with you – and introducing visiting producers to you – at several events we are hosting this year.

REGIONAL TRIUMPHS Tim Atkin MW talks us through this year’s Top 100, the new initiatives shining through and where to start with Occitanie wine regions
Does the pace of change in Occitanie reflect global winemaking trends? Is there anything you have noticed? Occitanie is such a large and varied region, with so many producers, wine styles and grape varieties. The region has broadly followed the winemaking trends we’ve witnessed over the past decade in many other parts of the world. There is less reliance on oak – especially for more premium wines – earlier picking, less tannin extraction in the reds and, most important of all, a greater focus on terroir, identity and a sense of place. There is also the rise and rise of both red and white blends, which has always been one of the region’s strengths. Are we at last seeing positive developments after these slow years hit by the pandemic? Yes, we are, and the region is well placed to bounce back now that tourism has opened up again. I always tell people that the best way to taste and appreciate what’s happening in Occitanie is to do so in person. The pandemic changed the way many people think about the sort of wines they want to drink. More of us are turning to wines with a strong identity, often from landscapes that speak to us in a particular way. What’s new in terms of initiatives to progress sustainable viticulture – what stands out? It’s very positive that so many of the wines in this year’s Top 100 were made sustainably or organically.
Occitanie benefits from a warmer, drier climate and is ideally suited to this type of viticulture. That’s part of a broader picture of greater responsibility on the part of many wineries. It’s not just about using fewer chemicals, it’s also about conserving water and energy. Occitanie is in a position to lead the world in this respect. Now that international travel is opening up, where would you recommend a visitor starts, to get a modern snapshot of the region and its winemaking? You are spoilt for choice! Languedoc alone is an amazing holiday destination. I’m a city person so I recommend Montpellier and Narbonne if it’s culture you’re after. There are some great beaches too, but the true glory of Languedoc resides in its landscapes. Go hiking and find places where you are on your own with nature in some of the most beautiful vineyards on Earth. Vineyard and winery visits are easy to organise, especially if you want to try out a few words of French. It’s a very hospitable region. Take a copy of this Top 100 guide with you! Some of the region’s winemakers are visiting the UK to promote their wines. What kind of information are they sharing with the UK trade to help us appreciate the wines more? Passion is a word that is overused in the wine business, but I really think it applies to Occitanie. In Occitanie, producers will tell their stories, talk about their terroirs, traditions and grape varieties, and explain what makes their wines different. The best thing that producers do when coming to the UK is persuade us to go and visit them in France. Vive l’Occitanie! Sud de France TOP 100

On 29 April, an expert panel of judges, led by chairman Tim Atkin MW, tasted their way through 403 wines made in the vast Occitanie region. After careful consideration, the best entries were chosen to be showcased at the Sud de France Top 100 tasting on 7 July. The results were illuminating: there was a notable increase in wines with organic or sustainable credentials – 54% in 2022 vs 46% in 2021. In addition, more than a third of the Top 100 red wines were unoaked compared with a quarter in 2021 (21% reds with no oak in 2022 vs 12% in 2021). However, the panel freely admitted that picking favourites from such an expansive line up was no easy task. “Generally the samples had very generous fruit and seemed to provide great value for money, which is reflected in the wines that made the top 100,” said Elizabeth Kelly MW, Majestic Wine’s buying manager. “Some of the Minervois were particularly good, a region that used to be quite common to find in the UK and perhaps is not so well represented any more – there were Syrah-dominant wines with lovely perfume.”

Meanwhile, Jeroboam’s wine director Peter Mitchell MW was seduced by the quality of Grenache Blanc, in addition to the headline red appellations. “Among the AOP wines, the general standard was high. Indeed, the best were very good, with Faugères and Fitou producing some standout wines,” he said. “The whites from Grenache Blanc with a little barrel ageing were also really exciting and stood out for me.”

Wine writer Rosemary George MW was no less impressed with the general standard of quality and diversity emanating from Occitanie. “I always enjoy this tasting – wines from St Chinian and Pic St-Loup stood out. And some very enjoyable Picpoul,” she said. “The red wines from the Languedoc have wonderfully spicy fruit – either for immediate drinking or with a streak of tannin for some ageability.” Although the panel tasted a broad range of labels, some unifying trends were identified among the numerous sub-regions of Occitanie. The judges reported that many wines offered wonderful freshness and poise, with noticeably subtle levels of oak impact. Conversely, the talk around Occitanie is of terroir and producing site-specific wines that communicate their origins. The overall impression formulated was of an extremely heterogeneous vineyard; there are great variances in character depending on local conditions, even if the grape variety is the same. “I think that a lot of the wines showed marked regional differences, in fact it showed the diversity of the region and the points of difference coming out,” observed Elizabeth Kelly MW. She believes that this emphasis on regionalism will help Occitanie attract higher-spending consumers, in the market for affordable premium wines. “Majestic customers are taking the area more seriously; we have a number of premium brands in the range that customers love for the sheer quality and diversity, and the great value for money that the region offers.” The panel’s consensus is clear – this is a region in the ascendant. MEET THE TOP 100 WINNING PRODUCERS ON 18 OCTOBER IN LONDON

he wine trade is invited to attend the Sud de France Top 100 Discovery tasting – Part II. This new principal event of our awards year will bring together the new line-up of the 100 winning wines from the landmark 10th edition of the competition as well as additional select wines from some of the winning producers. To be hosted on 18 October, this autumnal tasting will take place in a new airy venue, The View in London’s Holborn. The producers visiting the UK will include independent boutique wineries as well as acclaimed negociants and cooperatives and will showcase 100 extra cuvees covering the whole of the Occitanie Region. Most of these wines are looking for distribution. The Languedoc-Roussillon Sud de France/Sud Ouest Top 100 is a snapshot of the best of the diverse Occitanie region and are defining the region right now. It is a mix of widely distributed wines as well as newcomers to the UK market – and this year 60% of the selection awaits discovery and seeks UK distribution. Expect to see the results of winemakers’ confidence in prestige wines, as well as challenger styles from organic and sustainable production. THE WORLD’S BREAKING FIRST BUBBLES THE MOULD

Today, in the Languedoc, two different types of sparkling wine are mainly made using this traditional method: AOC Blanquette and AOC Crémant de Limoux.
In terms of grape varieties almost anything goes, from indigenous Piquepoul, Muscat, Terret, Petit Manseng and Mauzac to international Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne and many more. All of these can be found in blends but also as single-variety wines.
n 1531, in a small Benedictine abbey in Saint Hilaire located near the medieval city of Carcassonne, monks perfected the process of fermenting wine in glass flasks for the very first time, thus making the world’s first sparkling wine more than a century before Dom Pérignon in Champagne.
Mauzac, the original grape from the Limoux area is mainly used for Blanquette and brings a lively acidity and appley note to the wines. Alternatively, Crémant is predominantly made with Chardonnay and Chenin, which give the wine complex notes of brioche, white flowers and apricots.

T
here is more diversity to the style of rosé wines produced in Occitanie than elsewhere in southern France, from delicate, aromatic, pale-coloured rosés to punchy wines with deeper colour and concentrated fruit flavours. Rosé wines are also synonymous with summertime and the dry style and fairly full body make them the perfect accompaniment to barbecued dishes or light charcuterie platters. Grape-wise, Syrah, Grenache Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Carignan are widely used in the making of AOC wines whereas IGP wines can be produced with almost any red grapes planted in the region.

ed wine production in Occitanie goes back to the Romans and today represents a massive 59% of the total production.
The region offers a diversity of style that remains unchallenged by any other French regions thanks to its climate and terroir. Generally speaking, red wines in Languedoc and Roussillon are made using Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Carignan. The wines tend to be full-bodied, spicy and sometimes a little peppery, with flavours of black fruits such as plums, blackberries and cherries. They can sometimes have a herbiness described as “garrigue”. The south west is home to an array of indigenous varieties such as Tannat, Duras, Negrette and Fer Servadou. The reds in these parts are powerful, deep and tannic.

weet wines have been produced in Occitanie since 1285 when the “mutage” technique was first discovered by Arnaud de Villeneuve in Montpellier.

Nowadays, these wines – also known as vins doux naturel (VDNs) – are the hidden treasures of the region. In Languedoc wines are mainly Muscat-based and result in a non-oxidative style of wine showing great freshness and plenty of flavours of ripe fruits.

In Roussillon, VDNs are made from a range of grapes including Grenache, Malvoisie, Macabeu and Muscat. Except for Muscat and reds that are intended to be drunk young, VDNs from Roussillon are aged in wood and glass for an astounding range of 30 months to 20 years creating very intense and beautiful wines. In the south west, the wines are made with indigenous grapes such Gros Manseng or Petit Corbu, while late-harvest wines are made with Petit Manseng.
