The BIG Re-Think Interior Techniques in Interior Design Practices Master Tutor: Prof. Kireet Patel Studio Tutors: Rishav Jain and Aparajita Basu Assistants: Shail Sheth and Paramdeep Singh Dayani

Brief Outline: The intention of this studio is to develop a multitude of notions, approaches, positions and arguments with reference to interior techniques and its implications on the interior design practice. Here interior technique is defined as “A method, tool and medium that modifies, alters, conceals, exposes an interior element, thus transforming the transformable quality of the space.” The studio offers an opportunity to develop a design position in different contexts by questioning preconceived notions of interior design. It emphasizes the relationship between Interior techniques and its expression, identity and design outcome. The first four weeks are part of the common foundation program, where students from all streams work together to develop common skills and abilities. The later part of the studio is largely divided into two modules: the first module builds an argument on interior techniques through existing projects and the second module intends to develop a systematic approach to the application of the argument in three different contexts. It is an opportunity to develop an individual design position for disparate sites keeping the program constant.

Learning Outcomes: After completing this studio unit, the student will be able to: • Ability to develop a systematic argument/position/ approach on the interdependence between interior techniques and practice. • Ability to translate/represent the design argument/ position/approach through 3- dimensional and material based outcomes. • Ability to organize and evaluate the programmatic and pragmatic potential of derived design position. • Ability to build a design vocabulary and test it through the selected context (site/program).

(As per the studio proposal*)

Week 01-02 | FD PG Common Exercises

Objectory Process: The idea for this exercise was to start with identidying daily use oject and undergo observation and then study that bject in details. The drawing has to speak the assembly and manufacuring. The process of development of drawings are done through orthographic drawings , details and exploded isometric. The orthographic drafting is done by understanding the geometry and ergonomics of the elements. The object is dis assembled in order to understand its sequence of assembly of the object. In the later stage each dis assembled part of the kit of parts in understood with its functional use and explained in brief in form of exploded isometric.

OBJECT STUDY

Top view of the object

Dismantaled components of the object The mechanism of multipurpose oil can is “lever based. As the lever is pushed downwards, the fulcrum provides support to lever to apply force. When forced applied on the lever it lifts the lower cylindrical valve through the spring. The lever arm is basically made stuck wit the lever plate. The lever plate is spot welded to the outercylindrical valve.

When the lever is in rest position

Captions So since it is one way system, the lower valve sucks the oil from the can and push passes it to the upper cylindrical valve.Due to air pressure the oil is pumped through the nozzle which helps in creating the pressure.

Week 03-04 | FD PG Common Exercises

Factory Process: A magazine rack for domus magazine is to be designed. The initial stage includes design development keeping the ergonomics of the product into consideration. In the later stage the kit of parts are designed which is out of a limited given materials. Further these kit of parts are drafted interms of orthographic and isonometric drawings which are then seggregated in terms of fabrication and carpentry drawings. These drawings are clear in enough for the fabricator and carpenter to understand and ultimately a sequence of assembly is provided to achieve the final product. The learning outcome of the project is to give shape and dimension to the given materials for its appropriate usage. It helps one understand the intensive design thinking required behind developing a product. It also lets one understand the stages of design to implementation.

Week 05 | FD PG Module 01

Developing the Argument Brief: Designing an interior intervention follows a strong process which involves a concept and its development. Here the argument is derived and the interior intervention needs to follow the argument in its final outcome. In order to develop an argument, there are few interior design projects which are studied. These projects are divided into maily 3 parts following as : An era based project , Standardised project and a specific style project. In these projects the interior design techniques are identified that are interpreted to be used as a design ideology by the designer. A matrix is prepared where a diagram is made as an interpretation of the interior design technique used against the function that is being performed. This process lets one understand the importance of design thinking behind an interior design project. After the projects are understood through matrix, an argument is developed through a process of

Ideating Roles of an Interior Designer

Week 06-07 | FD PG Module 02

Ideating Role 1 of Interior Designer Brief: Ruins was a very appropriate site that can be used to achieve the stated argument as ruins and dilapidated structures are often celebrated because, apart from nostalgic value, the natural dilapidation itself over time may offer a sculptural aesthetic to the structure. this phenomenon is unique due to its temporality often, in restoring these structures, I can incorporate crisp, contemporary materials to contrast the ruinous elements, celebrating the original structure in this way serves to highlight the ragged edges and deterioration. My basic role was to keep the site intact and make it retain its value without intervening any of the elements. So, inserting space making elements was best of the choice. The principles of design followed throughout was in order to create an eye-catching and effective space to break through the geometry of the volumetric space. Is space limited only to one shape? The concept was to design the space with even more exciting elements, break the monotony creating buffer for the eye in any space and giving that a striking shape, which can communicate an entirely different image or idea from what the existing was about yet keeping the standard space as it is. Geometry helped create bright and modern interiors, keeping the balance and harmony and adding an interesting touch to the interior. The important information is communicated keeping in mind the sensitivity the space already holds. It’s mainly the addition of space making elements that impact on the geometry of the volumetric space.

As Zaha Hadid famously quoted, “There are 360 degrees. Then why stick to one?

Week 08-10 | FD PG Module 02

Ideating Role 2 of Interior Designer Brief: The Project Displaying Dream machines by Leonardo da Vinci Focus : Planning and Organising The Premise Propose a solution as a critique of the practice of Interior Design using the argument derived by you, within a context/site that has been actualised out of a need for standardization. The role of the interior designer needs to be seen where space has been transformed using thetransformable qualities of the space. Space needs to cater to two essential functions: a)15 Dream machines designed by Da Vinci need to be exhibited (85%) b) additional space for selling/displaying/exhibiting/retailing books/souvenirs/artefacts. (15%) The idea of this project is to test the corrected, improved and evolved argument in the given site context. The project involves planning the space such that the argument about the interior technique transforms the given space. The focus of this exercise will be organization and planning. Organization and space planning involves the systematic laying out of space-making elements. Considering that some arguments and design intents involve an array of elements, while the rest require volumetric explorations - this exercise intends to discuss the ideas of zoningplanning and organising as key tools to developing an interior language. Constraints No structural changes are permitted, such as removal of the main load-bearing components of the building. Proposal include : - Visual change of space by using finishes - Civil additions, alterations or deletions. For slab cut-outs, only 20% of the slab area. - New proposed intervention demonstrating interior technique. - An additional program of a souvenir shop+bookstore which is 15% of the total proposed area.

Captions The site safal profitair is a commercial complex with a rigid stereotypical grid of beams and columns. The intervention to be made is for diplay spaces of Da Vinci models. The idea is to design inserted interiors in it. The selected part for the intervention is on a single floor.

The main idea of the exhibition centre was to deliver the utmost user experience to the public. As it comes under public spaces the footfall is higher and the space needs to be guided through angles. According to the argument the geometry of a cuboid is transformed to triangular surfaces interconnected to form a individual block which is deviated from x y and z axis to satisfy the needs of human experience as we walk through the space. The angles are derived in certain to ease the circulation to point without clustering the space. It will flow through the deviations hence letting people experience the flow of a public space. The concept of using metal mesh with aniodised metal beams and framework is to give the space a exhibitional warehouse of collectives.Hence ray tracing the natural diffused light on the MS perforated sheets. It creates a abstract niche form adding the value to mainly the circulation as the key property of the Design.

Ideating Role 3 of Interior Designer Brief: The project focuses on role of an interior designer without having a given site. The idea is to understand the way an interior design intervention can be done without any references from the architecture. The challenge of the project is that the freedom is also a limitation at the same time. The represention of design is to be done in terms of isometric and sectional perspectives. This project make a designer understand the importance of three dimentional representation along with development in the design thinking. This project focuses on developing a design through specific design language of the designer that has been developed in the above two roles and the way designer expresses them in this project. The intervention needs to be explored with the utmost detailing and in the later stage an envelope is developed which responds to the intervention. The learning outcome of the project is the way a designer thinks without being in impression of existing space and designing an envelope around the interior intervention. It leads designer to do exploration in terms of material and detailing which ultimated leads the project as an outcome of design development through the argument.

DEVELOPMENT OF DESIGN CONCEPT

ISOMETRIC OF THE INTERVENTION

INTERIOR TECHNIQUES 1. Inserting elements to the plan along the grid that was obtained from the derivation and the path act as guide to user for their movement. 2. Deviating the lines to create interest for user to lead within and forward in the space. 3. Distorting form 3dimensionally to give a different spatial experiential meaning to the space. 4. Creating levels by overlapping the form so to create that expression of the new geometry. 5. The angles and the angular walls act as the guide as it lead the path through the space.
