Tribute to Ed Leistad, February 11, 1943–October 2, 2017 Ed Leistad was a charter member of the MBA in July 2003. He made Pete Greve, his employee and nephew, an active member. When Pete passed away in 2009, Ed became the active MBA member and replaced Pete on the MBA’s TGIF referral group and served as their president. Ed remained a TGIF member until his death in October. Ed served on the MBA board from 2011 through 2015, and was membership cochairman with Kenny Engelmeyer. In that time, they increased the MBA membership from 180 members to more than 400. Ed served on the directory committee for several years, working as the chairman in 2015, 2016 and 2017. Even though he was battling cancer, Ed signed on to chair the 2017 directory committee and produce the 2018 directory. In 2014, he was awarded the MBA professional of the year award. Each year, he has supported the Project Wee Care program, Scholarship Scramble, Rib Stock and always donated generously in time and money. During his five years as membership co-chair, Ed represented the MBA at many

functions such as the Big O Show and the Western Douglas County Expo. At these events, he was there from opening to close, promoting the MBA and soliciting prospective members. He committed himself to the MBA in a remarkable way: He lived in Atlantic, Iowa, and commuted back and forth. Ed was inducted into the MBA hall of fame in 2016. Ed graduated from Northwest Missouri State College with a degree in accounting. He borrowed money and purchased the geographic rights for eight counties in Iowa to sell Safeguard products. He later purchased the franchise rights for the state of Nebraska and had been a franchise owner/ distributor for Safeguard ever since. Ed expanded the business from a oneman operation to include eight associate partners and seven personal employees operating in seven locations throughout Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota.
