Bellevue

A

s the “Birthplace of Nebraska,” Bellevue offers a wealth of history to be explored in self-guided tours that take you to the state’s first bank and oldest church, an early cemetery and more. Bellevue began as a fur-trading post in 1822 only to see slow growth for the next 120 years. The opening of the Martin Bomber Plant at Offutt Air Force Base brought the city’s first population explosion in the 1940s and 1950s Then as now, Offutt plays an integral role in Bellevue’s development, first as home to the Strategic Air Command and now the U.S. Strategic Command. The base welcomes thousands of people to its Defenders of Freedom Open House and Air Show, slated this year on July 30 and 31 with the Air Force Thunderbirds flight demonstration team as the featured attraction. Proud to be on the Lewis and Clark Trail, Bellevue commemorated the anniversary of the expedition with a Lewis and Clark Children’s Interpretive Art Wall on permanent exhibition at Haworth Park. Eight feet tall and 65 feet wide, the wall features expedition-themed artwork by more than 700 elementary school children from Illinois to Washington. The Missouri River explored by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark continues to play an integral role in Bellevue’s growth and development. The city currently is turning American Heroes Park along the riverfront into a first-class, 70-acre regional attraction that includes a fishing lake, trails, a 300-seat amphitheater, a community center, a museum and a restaurant. Haworth Park is home to the annual RiverFest celebration, a summertime festival of food, music and family fun that has developed into one of the metro area’s major events. Bellevue also is adding two splash pads to its long list of family-friendly recreation options. The city’s extensive park system includes soccer, football and baseball fields, walking and biking trails, and plenty of facilities for cookouts and picnics. Sports-loving residents also enjoy the state-of-the-art Champions Village softball complex, opened in 2010. For nature lovers, there is Fontenelle Forest Nature Center with more than 1,400 acres of woods and wetlands and 17 miles of walking trails. The Katherine and Fred Buffett Forest Learning Center is a must-see for its architecture and year-round exhibitions and special programs for members and nonmembers alike. Nationally acclaimed Bellevue University continues to expand. Its main campus has gained several major buildings in the last five years, plus a new Bruin Boulevard. Bellevue is home to the Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home, a state-of-the-art facility catering to the men and women who have served our country. Nebraska Medicine Bellevue, the city’s first full-service public hospital, opened in 2010. New shopping venues, a combined hotel and conference center set to open in the summer of 2016, and first-rate recreational opportunities all help make Bellevue a gem of a city in eastern Nebraska. — Eugene Curtin

Gretna

I

t’s no wonder Gretna is one of the fastest-growing cities in Nebraska. Located midway between Lincoln and Omaha along the I-80 corridor, Gretna balances a small-town atmosphere with exciting community. The city’s historic downtown area along McKenna Avenue boasts red brick streets and is home to City Hall, the Gretna Public Library, several churches and many local businesses. Nearby Peterson Park is one of several city-owned recreation areas. In 2015, the park gained a $100,000 accessible playground as a welcomed amenity to the city pool. The city, last year, opened soccer fields at the new Fields at Gretna complex, where more development is planned. Leo Royal Park and North Park offer other recreational opportunities for residents. The Gretna Public Library provides a wide variety of services at a main branch and a branch especially for children. Growth continues to be a defining factor. In 2015, the Royal View mixed-use community project, the Gretna Senior Living project and an expansion of the Nebraska Crossing outlet mall were approved. Residential developments are seen throughout the area as well. The Gretna Public School District reported record enrollment topping 4,000 students at the start of the 2015-16 school year. The district continues to be top-ranked and maintains a tradition of excellence at its six schools. In May 2015, voters approved a $57.4 million bond issue for a new middle school and a fifth elementary school. Each summer Gretna Days showcases the best of the community. The three-day festival began more than 50 years ago as a way for local businesses to thank the community for its support. This year’s festival will be July 29-31. Carnival rides will join perenial 16

favorites that include a fireworks show, parade, car show and community picnic. Visitors will find many attractions in the Gretna area. Vala’s Pumpkin Patch attracts 200,000 people each autumn to its 400acre family friendly fun zone. Aksarben Aquarium and Schramm State Park along the Platte River offer outdoors activities, and the Holy Family Shrine is known for its breathtaking architecture and setting. — Susan Skinner Suburban Newspapers Inc.

La Vista

La Vista how grown in leaps and bounds, adding new residents as well as new shopping and entertainment centers in the last decade.

La Vista, Nebraska’s youngest city, has a reputation for progress. In the past decade, new residential and commercial properties have grown by leaps and bounds, while the city’s population has soared to more than 17,000. The city gets its name from its early residents who enjoyed the panoramic view of the Big Papio Creek Basin and from it named the town La Vista, Spanish for “the view.” The city’s first and only movie theater opened in 2015. Alamo Drafthouse, located in Southport West, features an eight-screen movie theater, a bar and a restaurant. The bar places a heavy focus on craft beers while the restaurant features a from-scratch menu. The location also has an outdoor patio with room for more than 200 people. Many businesses look to La Vista for its economic growth. The city is home to many familiar names, including Cabela’s, Yahoo!, PayPal, Oriental Trading Company, Black Hills Energy, Embassy Suites and scores of smaller established businesses. Cabela’s, in the Southport area just south of I-80 on Giles Road, spans three football fields with merchandise for campers, hunters, hikers, anglers, birdwatchers and outdoor enthusiasts. Suburban Newspapers Inc.

After a day of fun in La Vista, spend a night at one of the city’s hotels in the Southport area — Hampton Inn, Embassy Suites and Courtyard by Marriott. When planning an event in the area, consider the impressive Embassy Suites La Vista Conference Center, which offers 45,000 square feet of meeting space with state-of-the-art audio/visual technology. After checking out a number of local shopping destinations, grab lunch or dinner at a growing number of dining establishments. Or pop into the city library at the Metropolitan Community College Sarpy Center. Recreational opportunities abound, starting with 15 neighborhood parks. For those who enjoy the links, La Vista Falls is a premier ninehole executive course that won’t take a bite out of your wallet. La Vista Falls was also the first course in the county to implement foot golf, a trendy hybrid game combining golf and soccer. — Rachel George

Omaha Southern Railway Depot, 24th Avenue & Clay Street

Moses Merrill Mission Site, South of Platteview Road on 57th Street

Dating from 1869, the depot provided Bellevue’s primary link with the rest of the world for many years. Now adjacent to the Sarpy County Historical Museum, the depot features a pot belly cast iron stove, Morse code telegraph keys, an oak railroad station clock, oak station waiting benches, trunks, maps and pictures. 402-292-1880.

Only the chimney remains, but it serves as a shrine to the work of Moses Merrill, a Baptist missionary who started a mission school for local Indians in 1833. After Moses’ death in 1840, the mission came to an end. 402-292-1880

The Fontenelle Bank, 212 Main St. Take a step back into the history of Bellevue. The Fontenelle Bank was built in 1856, and although it closed a year later, the building served Bellevue for more than one hundred years. In 1857 it became the Sarpy County Courthouse and in 1875 Bellevue’s City Hall, a function it performed until 1959. Considered the oldest commercial public building in the state, it features displays depicting early Bellevue, an original walk-in vault, an 1870 accountant’s desk, an old oak teller’s cage, rare examples of Greek-revival Italianate styling and summer gardens. 402-293-3000

The house was occupied from the 1860s to 1916. 402-597-2000

Portal School, 242 N. Jefferson St. Return to simpler days at the Portal School, located in downtown Papillion. In the 1990s the school was saved by the Papillion Area Historical Society, moved to downtown Papillion and restored. It currently serves as school-for-a-day for hundreds of Papillion students. 402-597-2000

Offutt Air Force Base

The Defenders of Freedom Open House and Air Show is a popular event held at Offutt Air Force Base.

This is a milestone year for Offutt Air Force Base. The 55th Wing celebrates 25 years of being continuously deployed, 50 years of calling Nebraska its home base and 75 years of existing as a wing. “The 55th Wing enacts dominant intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, electronic attack, command and control, and base operating support capabilities around the world,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Marty Reynolds, 55th Wing commander. It’s a proud mission, one that the community celebrates along with the Base. “Thank you for everything you do to make us feel at home here at Offutt,” Reynolds said in reference to Bellevue’s inclusive spirit. “You may see our Offutt families in the community, taking part in events or volunteering as a way to say thank you for the way you have embraced us,” Reynolds added. “In return, we endeavor to continue accomplishing our important mission, just as we have for the past 25 continuous years in the Middle East.” The base is also home to the Air Force Weather Agency, and soon, a new $500 million headquarters for the U.S. Strategic Command.

The open house will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days with military and civilian aerial acts, static displays and booths displaying military history and capabilities. New to this year’s show is a bicycle access option. Cyclists may bypass vehicular traffic to a bicycle-only valet parking lot just 250feet from a ramp entrance. Visitors hoping to learn more about Offutt are encouraged to visit the Welcome Center, 1600 Nebraska Highway 370. L

ocated in the heart of Sarpy County, Papillion is expanding by leaps and bounds. For years it has been known as the county seat and as a city with much to offer, and that is more than apparent when you drive down its busy streets. Papillion is thriving not only as a growing residential area, but also as a booming commercial business destination. The city was ranked No. 2 in CNN/Money Magazine’s Best Places to Live in 2015. It’s also ranked on numerous other listings for Best Affordable Suburb in Nebraska, Best Small Town in America and Best Place to Raise Children in Nebraska. Recent additions to the community include new commercial developments within the city’s zoning jurisdiction. The Shoppes at Market Pointe, Settlers Creek and Shadow Lake Towne Center have brought Papillion more amenities. Midlands Place, near 84th Street and Nebraska Highway 370, offers additional shopping, restaurants and a Fairfield Inn & Suites Hotel. Shoppers also can visit historic downtown Papillion and the specialty shops there. In addition to shopping, Papillion offers many outdoor recreational opportunities. During the hot summer months, children can enjoy two splash pads – one in Eagle Ridge Park and one in Schwer Park. Adults can enjoy two city-operated 18-hole golf courses in Tara Hills and Eagle Hills. The Papio Trail system winds its way through parts of Papillion, a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll, rollerblading or biking. The Sumtur Amphitheater at Walnut Creek Recreation Area opened in 2007 and is home to numerous musical and theatrical performances. 40

Plattsmouth

Cruisin’ Main features hundreds of vintage vehicles along Plattsmouth’s Main Street. Below, nearby lake communities, such as Beaver Lake, offer many residential building lots.

L

ocated at the confluence of the Platte and Missouri Rivers, Plattsmouth began as an important trading station in 1854. In recent years, those same natural attributes have made it a popular recreation destination, with many lakes and scenic areas, such as Schilling Wildlife Refuge, attracting nature enthusiasts and boaters alike. Plattsmouth, the county seat of Cass County, has a population of about 7,000 residents. Many festivals and events take place during the year, including “Taste of Plattsmouth” in July, which gives visitors and residents the opportunity to sample cuisine while listening to live music. The Plattsmouth Harvest Festival in September is four days of carnival events, parades, food and a coronation of the Harvest Festival King and Queen. Classic car fanatics should check out Cruisin’ Main in October, which last year featured more than 500 vintage cars displayed on Main Street. The history of Plattsmouth can be felt in its downtown area, where many stately homes are listed on the National Historic Register. People can further explore the area’s past by visiting the Cass County Historical Society Museum, which traces the county from the pioneer days to the present. Since 2001, when Plattsmouth received the coveted Main Street Community designation, its mission has been to revitalize the downtown business district by strengthening the economic base, promoting its unique historic resources and bolstering local pride by encouraging citizen involvement. 50

The city boasts a senior and community center that includes a pool, gym, weight-lifting equipment, fitness room and an indoor track. Some activities and classes offered at the center include preschool PE, self-defense classes, basketball, sand volleyball league, healthy cooking classes, ballroom dancing, movie nights and swim lessons. On hot summer days, Twin Rivers Water Park is an excellent place for area residents to cool off and slide down waterslides. Besides historic homes, Plattsmouth has a wide range of housing options, including building sites in the city and in nearby lake communities, such as Beaver Lake, Buccaneer Bay and Copper Dollar Cove. — Michael Batchelder

Springfield

Springfield’s Soaring Wings Winery and Vineyard, just one of the city’s many attractions, has received awards at international competitions.

T

he same green rolling hills, springs, and peaceful valleys that attracted Capt. J.D. Spearman to Springfield in 1871 are the same attractions that have drawn others to the area. But today, there is much more. The scenic MoPac bike trail (and parallel equestrian trail) plus an international award-winning winery, an artistically landscaped sculpture garden and the popular Sarpy County Fair, show that there’s a lot more to Springfield than a pastoral setting and peaceful valleys. In recent years, Springfield Drug, boasting one of the area’s last old-fashioned soda fountains, and the annual Sarpy County Fair have been popular Springfield destinations. The Fair draws thousands of visitors from across the Midwest to events that range from show animals to tractor pulls. In addition to the county fair, Springfield also hosts its annual Springfield Days celebration in June. Soaring Wings Winery and Vineyard opened a few years ago just south of town, and the vineyard now produces award-winning wines in international competitions. Soaring Wings hosts numerous special events — including Suburban Newspapers Inc.

concerts — that bring folks from across the metro area to Springfield. The winery features a party room complete with a multimedia center, ideal for business meetings and end-of-the year parties. A quarter-mile away sits Weiss Studios and Gardens on two acres of award-winning gardens where custom art pieces, copper birdbaths and feeders are displayed. In the spring an arts festival is held for the surrounding communities. Downtown Springfield continues to add new businesses bringing additional interest to the area. Springfield offers plenty of opportunities for its children with the splash pad at Buffalo Park, one of summertime’s top attractions. Children in the area attend one of the four Springfield Platteview Community Schools: Springfield or Westmont Elementary Schools, Platteview Central Junior High and Platteview High School. — Eric Taylor
