PRESIDENT’S REPORT A Time to Reflect

I have great pleasure in presenting my last report as President of this great club. I have made no secret of the fact that this was a family decision and I am conscious that Ben has always had me “here” at the club and it is time to allow him to forge his own mark on the Club’s history. I wish to take this opportunity of thanking my wife Lee-Anne and my other sons, Sam and Jon, for their support, especially during my time as President. It is important from my point of view that I don’t leave any unfinished business before I depart, particularly in respect to the Subiaco facility. I can report that we expect a favourable outcome to be achieved for the Club before the end of this year. While it is important that I report on the last 12 months it is difficult for me not to reflect on my time at the club. I can simply say that I am proud to have been involved with such a great football club and I trust that members appreciate that my interests have always been in ensuring the long term success and sustainability of our Club, both on and off field. It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the contribution of QBE to our club’s success. Nowadays success cannot be achieved without solid partnerships with loyal sponsors. QBE has certainly played a pivotal role in our success both in the 1980s and the Glory Years of the last decade. A lot of water has flowed under the bridge during QBE’s 27 years of sponsorship but this relationship has stood the test of time and the following has been achieved:

• • • • • • •

22 years in the finals 12 grand finals 6 premierships 5 Sandover Medalists 11 Simpson Medalists 11 WAFL leading goalkickers Those facts just about say it all.

In 2011 QBE was proud to co-sponsor the production and launch of the Club’s third edition of Diehards – “The Glory Years”. Throughout this period the club never missed an opportunity to acknowledge the importance of the relationship with QBE. 2011 has been a productive year for Subiaco in many ways. We were pleased to announce that QBE signed a new 3 year deal as the Club’s major sponsor. Also during 2011 we celebrated QBE’s 125th anniversary and wore special jumpers to commemorate the occasion. Administration

I wish to thank and congratulate Peter Capes and his administration staff on the manner in which the club is managed. This year we have seen considerable improvements in the marketing of the Club. Travis Kalin has made a wonderful contribution in establishing a new website and taking our communications to a new level, through a weekly electronic newsletter and social networking via facebook and twitter.

All the experts predicted the demise of the Club in 2010, and only our diehard supporters gave us any hope. I commend Muddy for the way he went about it. Firstly, he didn’t start by implementing wholesale changes, but instead he embraced the senior players and let them know he had faith in their ability to deliver the goods. As it was in 2010 we only just missed the four by one game and we were two games out of third place. Leading into the 2011 season all the experts had us finishing 7th or 8th. Again Muddy showed confidence in convincing Des Headland to play on, and recruited Danny Hughes, Kane Bloxsidge and Clancy Wheeler. He was also shrewd enough to select Jack Anthony in the AFL allocation process.

Neil Randall, Melanie Chatfield and Mark Hughes (QBE)

In 2011 Subiaco won two Clubs WA awards – Best Football Club and Basil Fuller was awarded the Volunteer Club Legend of Year. We were saddened by passing of Dr Tom Dadour, who gave the Club over 50 years service. However we are delighted that Kevin Merifield has accepted the position of Club Patron Other off field achievements included:

• • •

• •

An “Ashes Downunder” function on eve of 3rd cricket Test last December, MC’d by Dennis Cometti – plus numerous Test stars from 1960s to 2000s. We were the first WAFL club to play on Good Friday which we combined with the ANZAC game. The club launched the third Diehards book – The Glory Years. All congratulations go to the author Ken Spillman. Special thanks to QBE and Phoenix Holden for their generous support and to Tuck Waldron MLA, Minister for Sport, who officially launched the book. In conjunction with the book launch we announcement Subiaco’s Team of the Decade. We also had the 25th anniversary reunion of the 1986 premiership team.

On the DISTRICT front we launched our Reconciliation Action Plan to facilitate the Club’s social inclusion program. This program, titled “Learn Today… Lead Tomorrow”, has been implemented to reengage Aboriginal school students within the Subiaco District and get them to realize the benefits of having an education. We are also in the process of expanding this program into our country zones. Board of Directors

I wish to again thank the Board of Directors for their loyalty, commitment and assistance to me over the past seven years. I have said many times that the stability of this football club, at Board, management and football department level, has been a major factor in our success. There are seven Board members and the changes over the last ten years have been minimal, with one change in 2002, one in 2005 and another in 2009. Four of the Board members have been in place over the entire ten year period. It has been an honour to work with these gentlemen and I thank Mark Lawrence, Basil Fuller, Nathan O’Connor, John Martin, Dennis Blair, Garry Peach and Wayne Morling for their friendship. Football Operations

Now onto football. When Chris Waterman was appointed in November 2009 he took on what could have been described as the most unenviable job in football. After we had enjoyed a long period of success and with a hefty contingent of aging stars it was never going to be an easy assignment.

Then Muddy injected some youth into the team, just when it looked like we were in a spot of trouble. Promoting players directly from the Colts is a brave move but one that paid dividends and shows that Muddy has an eye for talent. To have won nine games in a row and then to contest the grand final was a magnificent effort. To Chris Waterman I say congratulations on the year and the Club was pleased to re-appoint you a couple of months ago. Lastly, I must also pay tribute to Ali Pickett. It has been a pleasure to have witnessed the unique skills of this exceptional man, whose achievements have been outstanding – including two Sandover medals, an Outridge Medal, four premierships and the only current day player to be selected in Subiaco’s Team of the Century. A Parting Thought

On signing off it is important that our football club continues to work to Neil Randall and Alison Fan (Breast be the benchmark in the Cancer Ambassador) WAFL competition, always striving to be the best. The culture and values by which we operate improved markedly in the new millennium and it is no wonder that success followed. We must always continue to work to improve our standards. Finally, Lee-Anne and I wish all our members and supporters a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year. I look forward to cheering to the boys in 2012. Oobie Doobie c’mon Subi!!!!!!!! CEO’s Report

marketing initiatives has been quite successful and certainly something we will build on.

The club has had a good year both on and off the field, with the League team making the Grand Final and the Colts contested the Semi Finals. It was made even better when Colts aged players along with a number of young developing senior group players forced their way into the senior team.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & SOCIAL INCLUSION PROGRAMS

STRATEGIC PLANNING

Planning effectively prior to the football season getting underway is one of the most important pillars on which all areas of the club can then build on as the year unfolds. No doubt, 2011 has seen us implement many new initiatives and undertake a number of changes around the club for the benefit of our members. The Board planning tool “The Subiaco Story” provided us with our current situation and then where we want to be. Importantly it also provides our strategies to get where we want to go along with some measures of our success. The Board will again be developing a plan before the end of the year but it will probably be for a longer time frame. Each department of the club was tasked to deliver improvements in their areas. SFC must continue to be the benchmark in the competition, to focus on a high performance culture, success and winning. COMMERCIAL ACTIVITIES & SUSTAINABLE INCOME GENERATION

A high priority issue for the club in 2011 has been to negotiate with the WAFC our exit from the Subiaco Club facility at Patterson’s Stadium and the compensation due to the club in our lease agreement. These negotiations are only just completed, but the SFC have agreed to work to earn our own compensation and take the associated risks in continuing to offer AFL corporate entertainment packages until 2018. It was a difficult negotiation but in the next few years we hope the club will be pleased with the outcome. David Sierakowski and his team this year ran all the AFL hospitality functions to a high standard and he has also introduced a number of changes that we hope has lifted the standard of the functions. The facility will need to undergo some basic refurbishments over the next few years that will also lift the quality of our function rooms and bars. Another high priority issue was to develop more sustainable income options other than just AFL corporate hospitality. With the appointment of Travis Kalin, I am pleased to report the focus on sponsorship and match day hospitality as well as some new

During 2010 we identified the need for this type of program to be targeted to some of the schools in the district and we made this a high priority issue for the club and district. Ben Haywood has been leading this program, meeting with a range of stakeholders including community groups and sporting clubs, business, government, education and the school sector. An advisory group was formed to then assist us to develop a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), a WA sporting first. A great achievement Ben, well done. The RAP, which was launched at the home game v Swan Districts in July, enabled the club to then develop a program we have called Learn Today Lead Tomorrow. The program was then delivered during Term 3 in local primary schools Boyare and North Balga by Neil Arnold and former AFL player Des Hedland. As I write this, a full review will be The Tindale Map - by Karen Winmar undertaken so that our future programs will be improved and if as we expect there is a positive community reaction from Aboriginal people in our district and the schools they attend then this program will become of huge importance and will drive our club forward. TALENT & DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY

Great work by the Colts coach Jarrad Schofield and his assistant coaches and their efforts certainly helped lead our Colts into the finals. SFC faces so many inequities in our district boundaries and playing numbers that getting really good coaches and then providing 1st class support structures throughout our entire talent pathway will remain a vital issue for the club. Thanks for your efforts Jarrad and good luck with your next coaching role.

Frank Cooper (WAFC Chairman), Jeff Bleich (US Ambassador to Australia) and Peter Capes during Subiaco vs East Perth COMMUNICATION WITH MEMBERS, SPONSORS & SUPPORTERS

Another key issue has been to target growth of the number of people we have contact with, to thereby increase the number of people we can offer a membership, get to attend games, events and functions and of course promote our sponsors to. A growth target from the current number of 4,000 to over 10,000 people in the next few years is ambitious but to meet this target, we have focused on: • Greatly improving our website, functionality, content and information. • Launching Subi TV which has been really well received especially by the players. • Lions News has been sent out weekly in season, hopefully providing welcome club information. • Providing new and different events on game day such as Good Friday and even the brave promo of Bark in the Park. We will continue to focus on opportunities to develop the club through our web site and email communication as well as the various social networking. This year I am pleased to report that our attendances have been the highest since our move to Leederville. Well done to both Travis and Jeff Lind in particular. SPONSORS

My sincere thanks for another great year from our major sponsor QBE. To both Sarah Lowe and Mark Hughes for their part in finalizing a new three year deal thanks also. This partnership is highly valued by us and we really appreciate their involvement in the club and their support of events such as the Glory Years. Our major support sponsors are vital to the club, thanks to Phoenix Holden, KC Sports , Medibank, AE Hoskins and Sons and the Fosters Group for your support. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Thanks to Neil and his Board for their dedication to the club and their ability to positively influence our future. Thanks to you all for the assistance you provide not only to me but for the work you do with all of the staff. To our various Coterie Groups, your work and dedication to the club is noticed and appreciated and we hope it continues for many years to come. Past Players and Supporters (Arthur Cochrane and committee), The Golds (Ross Lockhart), The Ladies Forum (Laura Stafford), and The TRG volunteers (led by Basil Fuller). CLUB PATRONS

The Club was pleased that Mr Kevin Merifield accepted the position of Club Patron in 2011. Our thanks goes to the following Vice patrons for their ongoing support; Hon Julie Bishop MP, Mayor David Boothman (Stirling), Hon John Bowler MLA, Mr Michael Carlile, Mayor Nick Catania (Vincent), Mr Graham Edwards, Ms Janine Freeman MLA, Mr Brian Gardiner, Mr Clyde Goddard, Mayor Heather Henderson (Subiaco), Mayor John Kelly (Wanneroo), Mr Bob Kucera, Mr Michael Keenan MP, MrTony Krsticevic MLA, Mr Peter Metropolis, Ms Andrea Mitchell MLA,

2011 Administration Team

Dr Harry Phillips, Ms Margaret Quirk MLA, Mr Luke Simpkins MP, Dr Ken Spillman, Mr Brian Warren, Mr David Williams, Mr Grant Woodhams MLA. No 1 TICKET HOLDER & AMBASSADOR

Justin Langer and Kim Hughes are both passionate about the club. We remain very fortunate that both these champions continue to give us their time and it is a huge bonus for the club. CSES GAME IN ESPERENCE

This game was a season highlight thanks to Ken Bridges of the EDFA, Tony Power and Darren Resuggan for their professional organization and presentation of the game. The game generated funds for the local clubs, it was well supported and of course it was the turning point in our season. Thanks to the WAFC and the Department of Sport and Recreation for funding these games. FINANCE & ADMINISTRATION

The club will again announce a profit to members and although revenues have not increased in recent years we have been able to manage expenses. Nathan O’Connor and Deb King have again had a good year overseeing this vital area. Chris Waterman has now completed his second year a senior coach and he has been able to demonstrate a clear improvement in our list and team success. Chris had his contract renewed mid-year by the Board even before he engineered the remarkable run that ended in qualifying for the Grand Final. Providing great support to Muddy was Luke Sanders whose relationships with support staff, coaches and players has made a big impact in our football department. Debbie and Brooke are always very willing to help members and supporters and provide the club with a friendly can do face of the club. They also give great support to all staff and this is greatly appreciated. Thanks to them, the club’s finances, membership, functions and match day luncheons are completed efficiently and with a friendly, welcoming approach. Ben Haywood entered his 2nd year as District Manager, Neil Arnold his 1st, but both have made strong contributions and their drive to make our social programs successful is extremely important. Our bar profit is also the best in many years both at our home at Medibank Stadium and also at the Subi Sports Bar and Function Centre. Well done to Kevan, Paul and all their staff OPPORTUNITIES OR CHALLENGES

We face an exciting 2012, we will be playing in the second edition of the FOXTEL CUP and getting national exposure. It is sure to test our depth but will also offer opportunity for the players and the club. The AFL in the WAFL will continue to be raised because both the WCE and FFC want stand alone teams with their players under their total control. We see this as an opportunity for the WAFL but much of course will depend on the structure, format and the impact on the clubs. Peter Capes Chief Executive Officer

Sponsorship & Marketing Report Season 2011 has been a great year for marketing, communication and sponsorship, with the club embracing change and placing a heavier emphasis in these areas. This year the club has introduced a new sub-committee, which has focused on marketing and sponsorship opportunities for the club.

Communication

The clubs website received major changes early in the season and has now become one of the WAFL’s best for quality and content. The website numbers have increased by 100% over the past year. Our goal for 2011 was to produce quality content and an easy, user friendly website experience that our members would love. We will keep striving to keep up with current trends and deliver a best practice website for our members, sponsors and fans. Our social media pages (facebook & Twitter) were upgraded with new features and the clubs main objective was to engage more with our fans and followers. The Club’s pages have been a great success as we rank in the top three of the WAFL. This season we have provided our fans a number of fun competitions, articles, videos, pictures and prizes. We also gave the supporters something different, the club introduced Subi TV that the players really embraced and looked forward to each week. Short interviews were conducted/produced and featured on the clubs website and social media pages to give supporters different content and an in depth look into the club. One of the biggest changes this season was the revamped Lions News. This season we sent out weekly newsletters to members and fans that helped keep everyone informed of team selections, news, events and engagement with our sponsors. With Jeff Lind taking on the communications role our engagement with media has become a key part of the club. We introduced a new ways to connect with the media with easier ways to get information out and follow up strategies to communicate freely with the media. Marketing

This season the club focused on home games to provide extra entertainment and fun for spectators. The season started off

8

with Student Night partnered with Student Edge to target younger WAFL and Subiaco fans. One game that created a big buzz around Perth was Bark in the Park (Bring your dog to a WAFL Game). The event was in partnership with Studio Noah and ten other companies to share the day. This event was a big success with some 100 dogs attending and a good crowd. Good Friday was a big day for the Club and for the first time a football game was played on this public holiday. This game was also used to recognize the ANZAC tradition. The crowds were great and the atmosphere was buzzing. For the second year in a row the club held Ladies Day that was partnered with seven companies to provide a fantastic day for the great women of our club. This year the Club traveled down to Esperance for our country game and partnered with Sky West, who we would like to thank for their contribution.

encourage all of our members and fans to support those sponsors who support us. Appreciation

Thanks to Peter Capes, for his guidance, support and understanding which enabled us to maximize our results in 2011. To my fellow sub-committee members, Mark Lawrence (Chair), Peter Capes, Basil Fuller, Peter Wright and Russell Waterman, I thank you for your assistance, support and hard work throughout the season. A special thank goes out to Jeff Lind for his patience and dedication in the implementation of all key aspects of the marketing and communications of the club. I would also like to thank Brad Lohoar for his guidance and hard work with our website. And lastly thanks to the Subiaco Football Club staff, members and fans for quickly making me feel like a part of this great club.

Sponsorship

This year was QBE’s 125th anniversary and to help them celebrate this occasion the Club played in special cyan blue jumpers, which incorporate the two organizations colours. The Club hosted a sitdown lunch for all sponsors and at half time held activities for kids and had a special contest where two teams contested in a jig saw puzzle of the special jumper. In 2011 QBE resigned as our major sponsor for a three year period. For the second year in a row the club has partnered with Medibank to provide junior clubs with the Healthy Attitudes Awards, which rewards junior district players rewards for having the right attitude on and off the field. The club hosted a day to reward these junior members. We are extremely thankful to all of our sponsors that have provided the club with much needed assistance and support. A special appreciation goes to Mark Hughes (QBE Insurance/ Senior) Michael Hoskins (AE Hoskins and Sons/ Colts) who are our Major Sponsors. Your support, communication and willingness has been wonderful this season and we look forward to ongoing associations. We would also like to

commercial operations report I am pleased to once again report to members on our commercial operations activities for 2011. The year under review was a reflection of a different approach to the manner in which we presented our corporate hospitality through the agency of David Sierakowski, a person who needs no introduction to football aficionados and those, in particular, of the Subiaco Football Club. David’s infectious enthusiasm was evident in both presentation and quality of the corporate hospitality experience. The following provides a brief overview of our operations for 2011. Sponsorship

We are extremely grateful to those sponsors who directly relate to and support our corporate hospitality and, in particular, acknowledge our wine providers. To Dean Mitchell (Samuel Smith & Sons) who provide premium wines for our West Coast Coterie and Tom Galopolous (Driftwood Wines) who provide premium wines for the Fremantle Dockers Coterie, we extend our sincere appreciation for your support. As always we encourage our members to support those who support us.

AFL Grand Final Raffle

Our annual Grand Final Raffle of a trip for two to the AFL Grand Final was won by Suzanne Smith. Well done Suzanne. 2nd prize was won by SFC’s District Chairman, Wayne Morling. Our sincere thanks to all who participated. The Future

Whilst our Heads of Agreement regarding the rights to purchase seats at AFL matches at Subiaco Oval in compensation for loss of the use our facility has expired the same Heads of Agreement provides for a further degree of compensation subject to certain terms and conditions. After extensive negotiations with the WAFC regarding the legalities of the amount of further compensation, it has been resolved that the Subiaco Football Club will have the opportunity to continue to purchase a limited number of seats for a short period of time for corporate hospitality purposes. This is a good outcome for our existing corporate package holders and our commercial operations division looks forward to continuing this area of our activities. Appreciation

I am pleased to record my personal appreciation of the support of my Board colleagues over the past year and in particular with the expertise and professional input to achieving a positive outcome in our negotiations with the WAFC. I also wish to record my appreciation to David Sierakowski for his coordination of our commercial operations activities including the cooperative relationship he has established with Kevan Sparks stewardship of the Subi Sports Bar which has become an integral part of our overall operations at the Subiaco facility. To fellow Board member, Basil Fuller, CEO, Peter Capes and Consultant, Kim Williamson, I am grateful for your experience and support. In closing, my wife Debbie joins with me in wishing our corporate partners and all our members a Merry Xmas and continuing prosperity in 2012. Mark Lawrence Chairman – Commercial Operations

AFL Corporate Hospitality

AFL Corporate Packages

There is no doubt that the much improved performance of the West Coast Eagles this year gave our corporate hospitality sales a much needed boost and despite a huge injury list which affected their performance outcomes, the sales of hospitality for the Dockers was maintained to the level of our expectations. Despite the current economic climate we were delighted that our financial outcomes were commensurate with budgeted expectations. Subi Sports Bar

The relationship between our corporate hospitality operations and that of the Subi Sports Bar under the stewardship of Kevan Sparks is one of paramount importance. Accordingly there were a number of functions run throughout the year which more than complimented our commercial operations activities.

FINANCE REPORT The 2011 year presented a number of financial challenges for the club given the commercial pressures impacting the club’s operations at Subiaco Oval and the endless negotiations with the WAFC on a compensation payment structure. I am pleased to report that, notwithstanding these challenges, the club has again strengthened its overall financial position as at year-end. From a financial perspective, the 2011 year will be one of, if not the most critical in the club’s history given the outcome of the

Subiaco Oval lease negotiations. SFC will now be generating our own money instead of being paid a compensation entitlement and I can assure members that the Board is working diligently to ensure security of the club’s financial position into the future. On a personal note, I would like to thank my fellow finance committee members, Peter Capes, Debbie King and Basil Fuller for their assistance during the year. I wish all members a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Nathan O’Connor Chairman – Finance Committee

Facilities In reviewing this portfolios operation, the main thrust continues to be the Medibank Stadium facility (Leederville) and membership, together with the maintenance and upkeep of our Subiaco premises. This year’s Outridge Medal (seniors) and Taylor Medal (Colts) presentation dinners were held at Subiaco. Ian Cunningham, Dr Ken Fitch, Kevin Merifield, Dr Ken Cullen, Brian Sierakowski, The financial report shows our Leederville Dr Warren Lillyman, Colin Williams at Life Members Function facility again operated well, hosting Good Friday and WAFL first semi final fixtures also the grand finals of the local Community Football (Amateurs) competition. With our facility now professionally set up, including recently installed Audio Visual equipment we meet the professional standards required for business forums, product launches and presentations. A regular booking is currently for the Real Estate Institute to conduct their corporate training schedule.

To our operations crew headed by the popular duo Kevan Sparks and Paul Pisani our thanks are recorded for their reliable and friendly attention to members and guests. The general maintenance of our facilities both at Leederville and Subiaco remains coordinated and undertaken by the clubs T.R.G (Tuesday Response Group). The ability of this dedicated team to organise our maintenance program to ensure members and players facilities remain in the condition expected cannot be underestimated taking into account the results achieved and the financial savings to the club.

Outridge Medal Function at Subiaco Oval

Membership Scanning the membership graph included this report would no doubt set alarm bells ringing in relation to the overall decrease. However, analyzing the details over categories show the major shortfall was due to the cancellation of a holiday coaching clinic where attendees are included in the junior membership category. The expectation of Full and Corporate memberships did not adversely affect our budget expectations of this portfolio. To attract more members next year’s fees have incorporated an incentive with limited game entry included in the Lions category (Single, Concession and Country) and together with Pride memberships being inclusive of Home Game entry, this will result in adding value to members at both levels. Our aim therefore is to continue to follow up renewals and together with a new membership drive arrest this current trend. CLASSIFICATION

Other significant initiatives/documents reviewed by the Committee and endorsed by the Board included - Life membership criteria, WAFL Competition Equalisation, AFL in the WAFL, Premiers Cup and WAFL Sub Committees An important new initiative which was addressed through the Committee was the Social Inclusion Program, with key deliverables such as development of a Business Partnership Agreement, community consultation with local aboriginal elders and the finalisation of a Reconciliation Action Plan. The Committee has commenced a project to develop a plan for the period 2012 to 2014 that indentifies the Club’s highest priority strategic goals and sets out how these will be measured. An initial scoping session has been undertaken and a number of strategic planning workshops are scheduled for Board Members and Operational Managers with an aim of completing the Plan by the end of 2011. Thanks to Peter Capes, Garry Peach, Wayne Morling and Jeff Lind for their valuable contributions to ensuring that the Club pursues best practice business and governance processes. FOOTBALL OPERATIONS REPORT

John Martin

Season 2011 was the start of a new decade for the club and the season was always going to present some challenges with the retirements of several key players last season. The club made a decision to recruit only a few players to compliment the current list and provide an opportunity for our local players to develop. The group performed exceptionally well, playing consistent football, making the grand final and qualifying for the foxtel cup in season 2012.

Throughout the 2011 season the club played 37 players in the league team, two of which were from our AFL ranks. Eleven players debuted (Jack Anthony, Kane Bloxsidge, Danny Hughes, Jordan Eades, Rowen McDonnell, Scott Ward, Clancy Wheeler, Justin Joyce, George Hampson, Rhys Waters and Ryan Wade), eight players had played less than 20 league games, and some significant milestones occurred with Darren Rumble (150), Ben Randall (100), Blake Broadhurst (100), Shaun Hildebrandt (100 SFC Games), Michael Rix (50), Allistair Pickett (200 WAFL Games). The 2011 Outridge Medal was held at our traditional home, Subiaco Oval, with the League and Colts count being conducted at the same venue. Kyal Horsley was the stand out performer for the season, amassing 193 votes and he duly won the Club Champion award. Kyal was recruited from the Goldfields and debuted in season 2007 and was a member of the 2008 premiership team. Kyal finished ahead of Jason Bristow on 117 votes and Michael Rix on 93 votes.

FITNESS AND CONDITIONING

In season 2011 the Subiaco FC appointed Matt Barber as Strength and Conditioning Coach. This was a key appointment pre season to ensure that we could improve the overall fitness of the group and target specific players. Matt came well credentialed, being an integral part of the dominance of the Subiaco Football Club during their ‘Glory Years’ in the decade from 2000. Matt’s dedication to assist the players to become fitter, faster and stronger has been exceptional over the past 12 months and the Subiaco Football Club look forward to his continued involvement for the 2012 season and beyond. MATCH DAY STAFF

Volunteers are the cornerstone of every successful sporting club, and the Subiaco Football Club is privileged to have an outstanding group of hard working volunteers. Our loyal runners in Grant Callaghan and Tony Fullgrabe for the League, Team Managers Ron Tester and Steve Lind, Timekeepers Arthur Livingstone and Lindsay Hassett, Interchange stewards John Grow and Peter Warden, plus our statisticians in Peter Douglas, Nyree Stokes, Jeff Hoskins, Mal Adamson, and Rick Cassidy, all have done a fantastic job throughout the season, the statistics that our members and supporters view online are produced by our hard working statisticians.

COACHING

To our Senior Coach Chris Waterman, Assistant Coaches Marc Webb, Nigel Wilson, Paul Peos along with Reserves Coach Josh Wooden, Assistant Coaches John Martin, Ryan Cootes and Robert Holmes, on behalf of the Subiaco FC we thank you for your time commitment, professionalism, knowledge, communication and passion that you displayed during the season. The strength of our program is the calibre of our coaching staff and the knowledge they are able to impart on our players. The coaching staff has been extremely loyal, supportive and their focus, input and support of the senior coach has been very much acknowledged and appreciated.

Jason Bristow, Kyal Horsley and Michael Rix

Football clubs tend to have a band of special volunteers who have the capacity to assist on much greater levels. Three of these special volunteers are Alby Hawkins, Barry Strack and Mick Bailey who assist the football department throughout the week preparing the club for game day. Some of the extra tasks that these gentlemen assist with are: the washing of training and match jumpers, general cleaning of the changerooms, maintaining football stock, cleaning and management of the rehab and recovery centre, preparations for home and away games and the extra transport of equipment to and from our Subiaco facility. Your dedication over countless years is appreciated and we look forward to your continued involvement at the football club. You are outstanding people to have at the club and contribute enormously to the clubs culture. MEDICAL TEAM

Chris Waterman & Luke Sanders

Subiaco Football Club Annual Report and Yearbook 2011

The Medical team was outstanding in their diagnosis and treatment of injuries in season 2011. The treatment provided to players is second to none and a special thank you must go to our club Physiotherapist Martin Myer who provided exceptional service to all players, Doctors Simon Jenkin and Lisa–Marie Hynynen (helping in the finals) and club Chiropractor Jon Tan. Tanya Ferguson as Head Trainer ensured that there

was a consistent availability of trainers at training sessions and on match days to provide first class injury prevention and management for players. All players have enormous respect for the medical staff and the time that they dedicate during the week and on match days to ensure the club has a healthy playing list. Luke Sanders TRAINERS

Tanya was supported by a wonderfully dedicated group of professional and fantastic trainers. A very big thank you to all who attend training sessions, match day and rehab sessions. These very special people are Alby Hawkins, Mike Bailey, Kerrie Graham, Britney Miltrup, Caitlin Dawson, Sarah Harris, Lauren Hodder, Kiara Kent, Kevin Reid, Rodney Reynolds, Barry Demmler, David Graham, Nathan Stephens, Garry Underhill and Troy Stafford.

PLAYERS

Season 2011 was always going to be an exciting and challenging year for the football club, with the retirements of senior players and the continued development of our younger less experienced players. The group was competitive in the early stages of the season but was unable to play four good quarters of football. The injection of younger players through the middle part of the season contributed to the team being successful and it is well documented the League side then went on to win consecutive matches during the middle part and at the end of the season. Players such as Phelan, Kerr, Blechynden, Wheeler, Joyce, Stevenson, Davey, Worthington, Hampson and Waters are vital to the competitiveness of the group and we look forward to seeing them progress further and become the next generation of league players. The club is in an exciting phase with the success of the colt’s team this season and a host of exciting players with raw talent progressing to senior football to compliment the current group of players.

A special acknowledgement must be extended to Andrew McBean who has given outstanding service to the football department over the past 7 seasons. We wish you all the success in the next chapter of your life. Finally our loyal supporters and members, your support is greatly appreciated and importantly we encourage you to continue your support as we strive for ongoing success in 2012. Look forward to seeing you next season. John Martin Chairman - Football Operations

2011 Grand Final

The club exposed eleven new players in the 2011 season and these players will be better equipped to handle the pressure of senior football, when the club embarks on its next phase in season 2012 and beyond. Chad Cossom, Ben Keevers, Des Headland, Allistair Pickett and Michael Rix played their final game in the Maroon and Gold. They have all made a significant contribution to the Subiaco FC over the past decade and we thank them for their years of service and wish them every success in the future. STAFF

The Football Operations department would like to acknowledge the support, patience, professionalism, and assistance of all the staff throughout the year. It has been a very successful season on and off the field and this would not have been possible without your tireless work behind the scenes.

LEAGUE REPORT 2011 After a disappointing finish in 2010 the league team soared back into finals contention and finished off playing in the grand final. With 7 games completed we were in a frustrating situation having lost 4 games by 2 goals or less and felt we were playing pretty good football. Then out of the blue we dropped 3 in a row and were staring down the barrel of a poor finish again. The players to their credit knew we were a better team than that and rallied back into contention with wins over East Perth and East Fremantle. We then headed to Joondalup and lost another close game but the players walked off this time realising they had played poorly and could have beaten a very good team. The next week in Esperance was a great win and the catalyst for our revival as South were going well and we crunched out a good victory. From there another 8 wins in a row saw us through to the grand final, but unfortunately with Clancy Wheeler getting knocked out, Adam Cockie then did his knee not long after and Ben Randall broke his foot in the second quarter we ran out of steam 10 minutes into the last quarter. We unearthed some very exciting talent with Justin Joyce and Rhys Waters making their debuts up from the colts while George Hampson, Clancy Wheeler, Scott Ward, Rowen McDonnell and Ryan Wade all played senior football as well. Kyal Horsley had an outstanding season and finished winning the club champion award and he was second in the Sandover Medal. Jason Bristow and Michael Rix were also very good in the midfield and all 3 were important in getting the team moving at the halfway mark. Unfortunately at the end of every season we draw the curtain on some players careers, this year is no exception with some very important players retiring. Ali Pickett, Chad Cossom and Ben Keevers all retire with 11 premiership medals between them and were all instrumental in the glory years. All 3 can walk away from the game knowing they gave everything and achieved more than most. Michael Rix unfortunately didn’t get to finish out his career how we planned with an untimely injury in the finals but he leaves this club with the utmost respect from all involved having had

a major impact on everyone in only 2 and a half short years. Des Headland has also retired from playing but will continue his association with the club in a mentoring capacity. Des played with some injury in his last couple of years but showed determination to Kyal Horsley & Michael Rix - 2011 Grand Final fight on when others would not have, he obviously walks away with a premiership from his days as a Brisbane Lion. We also lose the services of Danny Hughes as he has returned to Melbourne for family reasons. Danny had an outstanding season with us and played every game for the first time in years after battling injury, and we wish him well in the future. I would like to thank all the medical staff for their tireless efforts in another trying year in the medical room, to Tanya Ferguson, Alby Hawkins and all the staff thank you once again. All our volunteers on match day who put in just as hard every week I say thank you. To all our coaching staff, we worked well together when it was tough and we were all rewarded at the end for our persistence, once again thank you. Matt Barbers reintroduction to the club was important and the benefits started to show in the second half of the year. Thanks to all our office staff for continued commitment to the club and also a big thanks to our board for their support towards the football department. All in all we have achieved alot out of this season, we may have gone abit further than we anticipated but that was due to hard work and commitment by the playing group. Next year will see us enter the Foxtel Cup for the first time which will bring new challenges to our group and club as a whole. We look forward to those challenges. Thanks to all our members who supported so very strongly when things weren’t going our way, your loyalty is priceless. Lastly thanks to all our sponsors in particular QBE who continue their long association with the club. We look forward to starting pre season on November the 7th in anticipation of another big season of footy. Chris Waterman League Coach

RESERVES REPORT It was a very positive year for the Reserves. We didn’t get the results we were after, but the progress made by our players was very good. Our future looks promising, as most of our younger players played a full season and gained valuable experience. With another preseason I am sure that some of our players who made their debut this year for the league side and a number of other players will be pushing up to make their debut next season. It was an inconsistent year in terms of win loss ratio. After looking back through the games, we were either leading or a few points down during the last quarter and we fell away a lot at the end of games. We had a very young group in the Reserves side this year. A lot were a year or two out of the Colts and there were also a number of players who played their first season at Subiaco. This has a lot to do with our inconsistent form throughout every game. We would play two or three good quarters of football and one poor quarter which in most cases lost us the

game. When we put it all together we played some very good football. A highlight was beating Claremont as they were the top team in the Reserves competition this year. From the start of this year to the end, the type of football we played was a big improvement and this is a credit to all the players who took on board what we were trying to achieve. Our players on an Individual basis made big improvement throughout the year. They all put a lot of effort in during preseason and during the season and they all need to be congratulated. Throughout the year we had a number of Colts players come up and train with the senior squad and a few also played some Reserves games. They now have an understanding of what they can expect next year and with the quality of the players coming through, the Reserves will have a good year next season. I would like to congratulate all the award winners from the presentation night and I would also like to thank everyone who was involved with the Reserves side this season. Josh Wooden Reserves Coach

George Hampson, Reserves 2011 F&B

COLTS REPORT The Subiaco Colts Squad of 2011 can be very proud of their achievements for the season reaching the Preliminary Final, after finishing bottom the previous year. We had a squad of 55 players this year with a good balance of new and returning players, with 40 being used this season. The exposure some players gained in 2010 was definitely a key factor in the performances and the strength of the 2011 playing group. We won 13 (double that of 2010), lost 6 and drew 1, placing us 3rd on the ladder, the highest finishing position on the ladder in 12 years. 12 players trained and played with the senior squad in 2012, with Justin Joyce and Rhys Waters making their league debuts. This pathway program allowed other players to play Colts football and this only increased the pressure for positions in the side and the depth of the squad this year. Having players relocate from Esperance & Kalgoorlie, and others coming to us from other WAFL clubs contributed to the depth of the group with an intense Strength & Conditioning program. Although we were an even playing group this season there were some boys who had a standout year. Congratulations to Craig Hoskins who was named in the Centre for the Colts Team of the Year. The likes of Rhys Waters, Justin Joyce, Myles Smythe, James Garcia & Simon Moore just to name a few all had fantastic years and were unlucky to miss selection. Craig also took out his second Taylor Medal (Colts F & B) in 3 years which is a true indication of his ability, work ethic & dedication to football. Runner

up was Justin Joyce, 3rd went to Simon Moore, who was the most improved player of 2011, while Myles Smythe had another consistent year finishing 4th. The Newton Screaigh Coaches Award went to Dylan Elliot a hard working under sized Ruckman who battle against the odds all year. There are many people needed to run a Colts programme. I have been very fortunate to have great support around me over the last 3 years, people like the Board and especially Garry Peach, Jeff Lind, Luke Sanders, Andrew McBean, coaching staff in Todd Holmes, Mark Enders, Paul Vines, Brett Wenn, Jason Hoskins and Courtney Moores, Thank you to Team Managers Kevin Brown and Frits Vanirsen, Trainers & Support Staff in Scott Flood, Erin Diamond and Annie Italiano and her team thank you very much. Best of luck to the boys who are continuing their Colts journey next season and also to the boys who are stepping up to League next year. The club I believe has a bright future ahead of them with the quality of players coming through over the next 3-5 years. Thank you and good luck to everyone in the future. Tribute to RETIREES

Chad Cossom

Allistair Pickett

Ben Keevers

From Kingsley JFC, Chad Cossom progressed through the club’s talent pathway. He made his league debut in 2000 and went on to play 214 games, 7th on Subiaco’s all time list. His career trademark has been his ability to run and carry the football and create scoring opportunities. Cossom also represented WA in 2005 and he has the unique record of playing finals football in 12 consecutive seasons up to 2009. Cossom retires with four league premierships under his belt. Chad’s early retirement was necessitated by the demands of his employment as a lawyer. Congratulations Chad on a wonderful career.

Allistair Pickett is a modern day champion. He played 180 games with Subiaco, he won the Sandover Medal in 2002 and 2004,has was the Outridge Medalist in 2004, he represented WA 3 times (2004,05,06), he was a four time premiership player in 2004,06,07,08, he was selected in Subiaco’s Team of The Century in 2008, a SFC Life Member in 2008 and he was inducted as a SFC Diehard in 2010. In 2011 Ali celebrated his 200th WAFL game to cap off what was a truly remarkable career. Ali has been a role model and an inspiration to anyone who has witnessed his incredible skills and courage.

Ben’s career spanned 2000 to 2012. The Sorrento-Duncraig JFC product was a Teal Cup representative and played just the one league game in 2000, and after a short period in the ACT AFL league he returned in 2003 and from that point has been a regular fixture in Subi’s lineup. Initially a wingman/half forward Keevers has developed into one of the premier defenders in the WAFL competition. Along the way Keevers has completed 163 games, played in 3 premierships (2004,06,07), 3 state games (2006,08,09), won the Andrew Christie Cup in the ANZAC game in 2006.

Shaun HilDebrandt

Des Headland

Michael Rix

Hilda was recruited by Peter German from Peel in 2006. He played just the 7 games in his first season and from that point his career blossomed. He played 118 SFC games, 3 state games (2008/09/10), 2 premierships (2007/08), was Club Champion (Outridge Medalist) in 2009, and he was 4th in 2007 and 3rd in 2010. Known as “The Machine” because of his outstanding running ability we wish Hilda, Bella and family all the best for the future.

Des’ football career ended where it started 14 seasons ago. Having made his debut with Subiaco as a 17 year old he was the No 1 AFL draft pick. His AFL Career included 166 Games (Brisbane 52, Fremantle 114) and he was a Brisbane premiership player in 2002. He ended his 34 WAFL game career with a strong performance in Subiaco’s losing 2011 grand final.

In Rix’s time at Subiaco over three seasons (2009-11) he has been the premier ruckman of the competition. His commitment, leadership skills and empathy have had a lasting impact on everyone he met with. His career finishes at Subiaco having played 51 games and 2 state games (2010/11). The club feels indebted to Rixy that we could not give him a premiership medal to add to his achievements.

SUBIACO DISTRICT REPORT 2011 was again another very successful year within the Subiaco District, with the district enjoying ongoing growth at all levels of football and we continued to capitalize on the new areas gained as a result of the 2009 district boundary review. The junior competition continues to be the envy of all other districts with the Wayne Morling evenness of the competition being a key reason that player participant numbers have grown, resulting in increased retention. Congratulations to Rob Goodin and his junior competition committee - well done on another great year. As in previous years, 2011 saw all schools within the Subiaco District participate in at least one school-based program, which were successfully coordinated by teachers, Neil Arnold (Development Officer), Jarryd Buscall and Kieran O’Connor (Clinic Coordinators). The District would not have run as smoothly as it does without the efforts of our volunteers. The Subiaco District Volunteer of the Year was awarded to Gwenda Wilmott, President of the Balga Junior Football Club. Gwenda was presented her award at the 2011 Sandover Medal. Our schools make an invaluable contribution to the success of the District and we would like to acknowledge both our primary and secondary schools, with district finalist; Allison McAuliffe from Osborne Park in the primary school and, David Traynor from John Septimus Roe in the secondary categories respectively. Without doubt a quality game environment can be directly attributed to the behaviours and attitude of coaches, it is for this reason, that the Subiaco District places a great emphasis on coach education. Chris Waterman (Subiaco Football Club League Coach) is to be commended for his contribution towards the development of community coaches. At its District Presentation and Awards Dinner, the District recognised coaches of the year from the Auskick, Modified Youth and Senior categories:

• • • •

The district has been fortunate to secure the services of Des Headland who has been delivering the program across our primary school and junior club environments to achieve enhanced outcomes for our indigenous participants across the district. Our schools program has been led tremendously by Neil Arnold who joined the district early in 2011 as our Development Officer. One of Neil’s great passions is to build a greater capacity and desire in the youth of today towards seeking a meaningful education. The program developed by Neil; titled Learn Today Lead Tomorrow, centres on re-engaging indigenous youth using football and sport, as a vehicle for social inclusion. Future funding options are being pursued to assure the long term sustainability of this program. As part of the district’s ongoing endeavours in this arena, a Reference Committee has been established to guide and support the district’s effort. The Committee comprises members from; Subiaco Football Club, Department of Sport and Recreation, local elders, community leaders and, indigenous mentors. One of the key achievements of this Committee was the production of our Reconciliation Action Plan, which is a first for any district and WAFL club. The RAP as it is commonly referred

Auskick Coach of the Year - Tony Hristianopoulos from Karrinyup Saints Junior Football Club; Modified Coach of the Year - Cory Lake from Sorrento Duncraig Junior Football Club Youth Coach of the Year - Sean Connolly from Carine Junior Football Club; and Senior Community Coach of the Year - Peter Ryan from Kingsley Amateur Football Club at senior level. All were named as Subiaco District Coaches of the Year in their respective categories.

One of the greatest highlights for the district and club in 2011 is the accelerated implementation of our indigenous programs. Originally, implementation was scheduled for 2012, however, seed funding from both the District and Subiaco Football Club, has enabled implementation 12 months ahead of schedule.

to, is a critical instrument as it aims to convert “good intentions into actions” by being a tool to help build positive relationships between indigenous and nonindigenous people. The input and on-going support and involvement from community leaders and elders has been outstanding.

The RAP is used as a foundation to drive our indigenous community programs. The district and Club aim to extend these programs to our country zones - Kalgoorlie and Esperance in 2012. This will involve on-going consultation with stakeholders to contextualise program to suit specific requirements with respect to substance and content, to ensure that it remains relevant in the long term. Very exciting times are ahead in an area which the district sees as paramount to its growth, not just in a football, but in its positive contribution to society as a whole. Special thanks must be extended to all the fantastic volunteers at grass roots level, in particular; Community Presidents (Senior and junior), Committee Members, Coaches, Umpires, Managers, Auskick Coordinators, Parents and Players. Without your leadership and dedicated commitment of time and expertise, the District and game environment would not be as strong.

Neil Arnold - April Holiday Coaching Clinic

Lastly, thanks to everyone for their support in 2011, we look forward to 2012 and the challenges and opportunities that await. Wayne Morling Chairman – Subiaco DFDC

Ben Haywood Subiaco District Manager

LITTLE LEAGUE This year has seen me lead the Little League teams for the 15th year in a row – a continued pleasure. Thanks to the Subiaco Football Club for providing a set of ‘away’ jumpers due to the change of structure of Little League playing only at Home games where two teams were provided. A representative team from Esperance visited us in June and played during the half-time break for a WAFL game and then for an AFL game. A total of some 440 junior players have participated in Little League for Subiaco this year. Again, we had the opportunity to play in the Finals where we used a representative team of about 15 players from all of our District Junior Clubs. This team played at the Semi-Final, Preliminary Final and Grand Final. To their credit, they took out the Alex Panton Cup, a trophy that has found its way to Subi for five out of the last six years. The kids really enjoyed themselves playing at Patersons Stadium. Thanks to all the parents for being part of the team and for being only too happy to help out where needed. We would like to thank Chris Waterman and the support staff for carrying on the tradition of allowing our kids into the changeroom to meet senior players and to see them prepare for the League game. Special thanks to all players for making the Little League kids a part of the Subi ‘team’, and to Justin Langer, Ali Pickett and players from Colts through to League who gave their time to talk to their little team-mates.

SFC Little League win 2011 Alex Panton Cup

A big thanks to Ben for his help throughout the season. As always, Luke Sanders was there as backup to help us out or encourage. Thanks guys! Hilly, 100% Subi, Little League Manager

Congratulations to Jarrad Schofield and the Colts group on making the Preliminary Final after finishing at the bottom in 2010. Members may recall that we finished off the 2010 season in fine style and showed a glimpse of the form that we managed to maintain through this year’s season. After three years in the role as our Colts coach, Jarrad has stepped down to seek further opportunities to develop himself as a senior coach. Jarrad has been absolutely wonderful in this role and seeing him develop as a coach of immense potential has been a great achievement for both Jarrad and our Club. He will be highly sought after as a coach and hopefully we will be able to provide the opportunities at our Club for his further development. Thank you Jarrad, you have been outstanding and it has been a pleasure to work with you.

SFC LIONS PAST PLAYERS & SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION REPORT Our association has had another very successful year hosting 12 half time functions and a quiz night. We have continued with our sponsorship of our Reserves at our half time functions. A highlight of the year was our SFC PPASA hosting the State Schoolboys Jumper Presentation. The night was a great success with over three hundred people attending. We again travelled to Esperance to support the Esperance District Football Association and attended their grand final day. Presentations were made on behalf of the Club and the SFC PPASA to all five grades (14s/16s/Colts/Reserves/League). The U16s F&B medal was won by Sharn Campbell and the SFC PPASA Gold Medallion for the best young player in the league grand final went to Graeme Thomas. In 2012 season we have committed to donating the F&B medal and shield to EDFA district colts. We now have a new doorway from the alfresco area into our function room. Thank you to Michael Hoskins of AE Hoskins & Sons for donating this doorway. I am sure that this will help us to enlist more members into our association.

All members of SFC are entitled to join as we are now a supporters coterie. Our members are entitled to free entry to our half time functions, we supply free food and a beverages. We entertain our reserves team, make presentations to their best players and we also entertain members of the visiting club’s past players and reserves team. Neil Randall has been one of the best Presidents this club has had in my fifty years with the club. He is a true Subiaco man and it will be sad to see him step down. Thank you Neil for your support of our Association over these past seven years. I thank the people who donate the food for our half time functions at their own cost , the workers who help put these functions together at each home game. I would also like to thank all of the board members , Peter Capes and his staff for their help. Our AGM will be held at the SFC social club on the 22nd of January 2012 at 10.30am. Please come and join us with a barbecue and drinks following the meeting. In conclusion I would like to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. Arthur Cochrane President

GOLDS REPORT In my first year as President I am pleased to report a productive year for Subiaco Golds. Many thanks must go to Keith Stone, our past President for his assistance and guidance during the year. We welcomed 5 new members during 2011.

My thanks go to President Neil Randell, CEO Peter Capes, Football Manager Luke Sanders and the Office Staff, especially Brooke Edwards for their help. Special thanks to Kevan Sparks and his offsider Paul for their help at each of our monthly meetings and also to Chic Jackman our BBQ Specialist for his great work.

Congratulations to our Club Coach and his able assistants, and the players for their efforts in reaching the Grand Final.

Golds player of the month voting resulted in Jason Bristow winning twice with Kyal Horsley, Michael Rix and Danny Hughes being the other winners. The Golds Player of the Year was Kyal Horsley.

We had a varied array of speakers during the year including our Club President Neil Randell, Past Player and Life Member Rod Willet, retiring player Chad Cossom and the Mayor of the City of Vincent, Alannah MacTiernan. Club Director Basil Fuller provided a great night in October with a Quiz on Golds and Subiaco Football Club.

Golds donated a Pilates Reformer to the players’ rooms this year to assist in any rehabilitation, achieveb by our fundraising. Lotto Super numbers is our major fund raiser and to all who supported this our grateful thanks. Thanks also to Ron Tester who ran our Melbourne Cup BBQ night and to all those members who donated prizes for our Dinner Meetings.

Golds assisted with the BBQ at SFC’s Junior Holiday Clinic and Auskick Gala Day. In September 8 members travelled to Kalgoorlie for the GFL’s grand finals and we presented the Subiaco Golds Medal for our Best Player in the League grand final to Ryan Booy.

During the year we lost long time member and Treasurer Ken Hamer. We were saddened by his passing. To the committee and members of Golds I extend my thanks for their support and wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a successful New Year. Ross Lockhart President

LADIES FORUM REPORT It has been a great year both on and off the ground. Congratulations to the Colts and League teams, well done. For the Ladies Forum it has been a mixed year and although we are a small group we have done well. Together with the Golds we have had interesting guest speakers and meeting nights are a good chance to mix and chat. Our main fundraising efforts were our cake stall, chocolate drives and our home game raffles. Thanks to all who helped. Afternoon teas continue to be successful and a big

thank you is due to Elaine for her goodies. Thank you Elaine. As we are a small group, the Ladies Forum are always looking to welcome new members. We are a friendly group working to assist with the Colts with things they require. Please contact me about joining us. I wish to thank the committee and members for filling in while I was ill this year, it was much appreciated. In closing I wish all members, Board of Directors and staff a safe and happy Christmas and New Year. See you next season Laura Stafford President

Five New Life Members Inducted

Basil Fuller & Mick Bailey

Since the foundation of the Club in 1896 there have been 164 Stalwarts who have been bestowed with the highest honour afforded. Regrettably 71 have passed on leaving 93 as the current custodians of the proud and rich traditions that have been inherent to the Subiaco Football Club.In keeping with tradition five new Life members were formally inducted into this prestigious group at the 2011 annual dinner. Life Member Phil Lamb did a wonderful job as MC and introduced Keith STONE

Keith has been a member of the Golds Coterie Group for over 20 years and he was the Golds President for 10 years. For the past 8 years he has also been a member of the Tuesday Response Group, who are at the Club every week and carry out all sorts of maintenance in installation work, something that Keith excels at.

Fred Davenport, Austin Robertson, Haydn Bunton & Ken McAullay

the five inductees, and in response each spoke with emotion and passion about their love of the club and the honour that life membership is to them. After the inductions the life members were entertained by a very colourful and entertaining guest speaker in Ken McAullay. Ken included with his anecdotes his admiration for numerous Subiaco people and life members he had been involved with throughout his career. Details on the new inductees are as follows: Luke NEWICK

Newick originated from the Northern Districts JFC. He has been an outstanding player at Subiaco over the last decade and could well be described the best WAFL ruckman of that time. Newickhad to do a long apprenticeship at Subiaco, playing in 3 reserves premiership to go with his 150 games, four league premierships and four appearances for WA .

Frits VANIRSEN

Frits started as a member of the Colts support staff from 1992 and since that time he has been statistician, interchange steward, timekeeper, assistant team manager and he has filled in as team manager on numerous occasions. Frits has also carried out numerous roles at the Karrinyup JFC and North Suburban Junior Football League for over 30 years and he was the inaugural chairman of Subiaco’s new district football council for 2 years. Frits’ company Freeway Screens has been a sponsor of the Club for many years.

Aidan PARKER

The Carine JFC recruit made his debut with Subiaco back in 2001 before spending two years on Adelaide’s rookielist. Incredibly Parker has not missed a game since returning to the Lions in 2005 and he now has played over 150 games consecutively. He has held the position of club captain for the past 3 years, has played 3 premierships in 2006, 07 and 08 and he has also represented Western Australia four times.

Ben KEEVERS

2011 was Ben’s 12th season of league football. The Sorrento-Duncraig JFC product was a Initially and wingman/half forward and later developed into one of the premier defenders in the WAFL competition. Along the way Keevers has completed 150 games, accumulated 3 premiership medallions (2004,06 & 07), 3 state games (2006,08,09), and he was 3rd in the F&B in 2009.

The mighty roar of a will-o’-the-wisp Lion: a tribute to Neil Randall By Dr Ken Spillman, author of Diehards: The Glory Years When Neil Randall became president in 2005 his association with the Subiaco Football Club already spanned more than nearly 35 years. A Scotch College boy from Mount Barker, he made his debut in 1971 as one of Haydn Bunton’s mid-ladder Maroons. His first kick in league football was a direct pass to Austin Robertson, who effortlessly guided through a major. That was the year the Subiaco Football Club opened its first licensed premises – the result of a long legal battle. Who knew then that the young Randall would eventually follow his club’s lead and become one of Western Australia’s best known publicans? Who knew then that the lad would play a central role in shaping the club’s 21st Century fortunes? On countless occasions during the early 1970s, I’d catch a number 92 bus to St John of God Hospital and walk over the railway bridge to Subiaco Oval, enjoying the emergence of such stars as Mike Fitzpatrick and Peter Featherby and pondering the form of a number of less consistent young players who seemed to possess a kind of X-Factor. Keith Watt was one of those. Randall was another. On his day, he could torment opposition defenders, a will-o’-the-wisp dodging and weaving across half-forward. Most often he’d deliver inboard with precision – but he could also snap brilliantly for the big sticks. His long hair flowed as he moved lightly across the Subiaco Oval turf, all dash and class. Like Watt, Randall blossomed under captain-coach Ross Smith in 1973, combining with such players as Ron Bayens, Mick Malone, Peter Metropolis and Brian Sierakowski to form the most dangerous half-forward line in the competition. Subiaco’s droughtbreaking premiership that season would remain the high point of Randall’s playing career, but he underlined his class with a superb display in a narrow loss to Tom Hafey’s Richmond in a ‘Champions of Australia’ series a week after the Grand Final. Champion Richmond rover Kevin Bartlett described Subiaco’s effort that day as ‘the best performance I have seen from any Western Australian side’. Playing under David Parkin in 1975, Randall was the Lions’ leading goal kicker. The following year, on the urging of ruckman Peter Burton, coach Jack Ensor unleashed him as a rover – with such effect that he won the fairest-and-best award. By the end of Randall’s career with Subiaco in 1979, he’d racked up 152 games and was a Life Member. Randall filled a number of football-related roles at Subiaco prior to his election to the board of directors of the in 1993. A wooden spoon in 1996 – following a Grand Final appearance in 1995 – stung the club and jolted it into a new era. There was a changing of the guard at the top, with the pairing of Peter Metropolis and Kim Williamson as president and general manager respectively, and this was complemented by the pairing of Randall as chairman of football operations and Jeff Lind as football manager. The four men brought a powerful sense of purpose. Club culture became paramount. Recruiting would have the goal of maintaining strength as the club covered inevitable player losses, but assiduous development work would facilitate the promotion of young players from reserves and colts. As Neil Randall recalled: When I was given the portfolio of football affairs for season 1997, Jeff Lind was appointed football manager. We made a pact together that Subiaco would be a competitive top four side

going forward… We agreed that premierships would happen as long as we were competitive. Randall and Lind proved a deadly Neil Randall & Jeff Lind combination and Subiaco’s manifold successes after the turn of the century owed much these two men. Randall served for many years as vice-president and succeeded Metropolis as president following the 2004 premiership, while Lind succeeded Williamson. After the Lions’ disappointing exit from the 2005 finals, Randall remarked: ‘In my first year as president I have found out that it isn’t easy to win a premiership’. But if he regarded that year as ‘embarrassing’, he would soon have plenty to celebrate as the club secured a hat-trick of flags from 2006. That Randall’s presidency coincided with the emergence of his son Ben as a key part of the Lion’s on-field unit heightened the joy of premiership success in 2006-07, but the ecstasy of 2008 was not unadulterated. Early on Grand Final day, coach Scott Watters visited the Randall home to announce that Ben was to be omitted from the team. Shattered though the family was, both father and son both proved they were maroon to the core. The president demonstrated his statesmanlike qualities by fulfilling the day’s presidential duties with aplomb, celebrating the flag for the monumental achievement it was. Members of the Subiaco Football Club rightly believe that the board representing them over the past decade has been the most professional of any in Western Australian football. Randall pointed out in 2010 that stability ‘provided us with consistency and solidarity’. Enjoying ‘great debate and excellent camaraderie’, board members had ‘turned around a culture, from a club that just could not make it to the final hurdle to a club that enjoys and expects success’. Jeff Lind testified that Randall himself ‘was never backward in making the hard calls on any issue’. He displayed ‘the unique ability to embrace and bring together all sections of the club’, and was ‘equally comfortable with the punters in the members bar, players, coaches, support staff, coterie groups, sponsors, officials and media’. In a nutshell, Randall’s approach was ‘let’s get the business done and have some fun doing it’. It was perhaps this philosophy that prompted Grant Dorrington, Director of Football at the West Australian Football Commission, to observe in 2011 that Randall ‘epitomises why our game is what it is’. I have written previously that great football clubs are a slow-moving procession of great people, a parade of champions filling countless roles both on and off the field. Neil Randall is one of those great people, one of those champions. He has filled diverse roles at Subiaco, always displaying the class that was evident from his first kick in league football. He played a key role in the club’s revival and, as president, combined football passion with a keen sense of business. As an original ‘Diehard’ and a firm believer in the adage that ‘success breeds success’, he also initiated the chronicling of The Glory Years, thereby ensuring that future Lions would fully comprehend their inheritance. Aidan Parker, one of the great onfield leaders during The Glory Years, provides a fitting last word: Randy is an absolute legend of the club and someone who I have always admired for his passion towards the Subi Footy Club. It will be sad to see him go but he leaves an outstanding legacy, which continues on now with Ben. Well Done Randy, you’re a ripper!”

Diehards III - The Glory Years 2000-2010 The history of the first hundred years of the Subiaco Football Club is documented in two books titled “Diehards: The Story of the Subiaco Football Club 1896 – 1945 (Vol 1) and 1946 – 2000 (Vol 2)”, written by Dr Ken Spillman. These publications encapsulate the highs and lows of the club’s past and bring to life the characters who forged Subiaco to become a power club of the West Australian Football League. Ken Spillman has written a third book covering the club fortunes over the past ten years, titled “Diehards: The Story of the Subiaco Football Club, The Glory Years 2000 – 2010”. The Minister for Sport, Hon. Terry Waldron MLA officially launched the new book at the pre-game function at the Round 10 clash against Peel Thunder on Saturday 21st May. The Minister praised the Club, “It is a remarkable achievement of having reached six grand finals 10 years, winning four of them. The author Dr Ken Spillman is to be complimented on his ability to paint a picture of a Dr Ken Spillman & Kevin Merifield club that has embraced the need to adapt to changing on and off field practices that has set a standard for other clubs to follow”. He also said “The Glory Years is a valuable and inspiring work that will be enjoyed by Lions fans as well as genuine football lovers across the state”. President Neil Randall commented on the book, “The last ten years has seen unprecedented success in the club’s rich history and to wait another hundred years to chronicle this success would be a travesty for those involved in the era. Our success did not come by chance. It has been the result of critical internal scrutiny, strategic planning, the appointment of high quality staff, the provision of first class facilities and the development of a winning culture.” “Football followers will be entertained and enlightened by this excellent story. It allows readers to gain an insight into the behind the scenes workings of a Club that lost 5 preliminary finals and 3 grand finals in the period from 1989 to 2003. Then after a 16 year drought what followed was not one but four premierships. The book highlights characters, administrators and players who had an impact in the 10 years and who was the driving force and what were the catalysts to The Glory Years”. Neil Randall had great pleasure in presenting an “In Appreciation” certificates to Ken Splillman and the Club sponsors QBE and Phoenix Holden. Both of these companies sponsored the production of the book. At the launch Ken Spillman gave a speech that was worthy of football pre-match “pep talk”. He spoke with passion on the four main elements that guided him through this book:

The downside of unnecessarily recruiting former AFL players who are at the end of their careers – referring to the preference to promoting local talent and “hungry” second tier players. Other dignitaries In attendance at the launch were WAFC Chairman Frank Cooper, Club Patron Kevin Merifield, Vice Patrons Julie Bishop MP, Andrea Mitchell MLA, Mayor of Subiaco Heather Henderson, Mayor of Stirling David Boothman, Graham Edwards, Club No 1 Ticket Holder Justin Langer and Club Ambassador Kim Hughes. With Tim Gossage in control as MC the attendees to the launch were entertained by probing and informative interviews with former coach Kevan Sparks (1999-2002) and the 2004 premiership captain Richard Maloney. Tim also introduced video recorded messages from premiership coaches Peter German and Scott Watters. 2000 Sandover Medalist Richard Ambrose also travelled from the eastern states to attend the launch. Team of the Decade

To compliment the launch of The Glory Years book it was appropriate that a best team of that era be selected and announced that day. With such teams there is always controversy and disappointment, however selection was based on the criteria of: must have played in one premiership in the last 10 years, must have played 20 games and must only consider their playing form for Subiaco and not previous or subsequent form with an AFL team. The Team:

A stable Board and administration served the Club well The ability of the Club “to extract prime cuts of meat from a very lean bone” – in reference Subiaco’s small zone over the historic period – and the fact that the club maintained a high percentage of local content in the league team. The recruiting of quality second tier players – the likes of Pickett, Ambrose, Vines, Maloney, Webb, Hayes, Haynes, Robbins, Mapleston, Hall and Hildebrandt.

125 years is a milestone worth marking.

For sure.

This year, QBE marked 125 years as one of Australia’s leading insurers. The Subiaco Lions celebrated this milestone in round 20 when the team played in a commemorative QBE playing jumper. It was a day to remember with the Lions recording a memorable 14 point victory over the Perth Demons. QBE would like to thank the club for helping celebrate our 125 year anniversary and we look forward to continuing our support in 2012.
