EDITOR’S NOTE

editor’s note

ith no qualms at all, I’m dusting off my leathers, furs and python (both faux and real). Many of us dread putting away our summer wardrobes to bring out the cooler weather essentials. We might be swapping out our summer brights for muted tones but this fall, it’s all about texture. Even if you’re feeling monochromatic, you can easily mix and match different textures. Whatever the outfit, don’t forget to take care of your key accessory: your skin. This means lots of skin hydration. Lather on the lotions, drink plenty of water and let the real dressing begin!

Powerball 25: Quarter Life Crisis Canada’s leading contemporary art gallery, The Power Plant, hosted one of the most rockin’ parties on Toronto’s social calendar: Power Ball 25. Known as the gallery’s largest annual fundraiser, this year’s edition (titled “Quarter-Life Crisis”), attracted a varied crowd of partygoers who support the gallery with funds to the exhibition and public programs.

Over 1,700 revellers had an art attack wherever they were. Installations included two Range Rover Evoques were a “canvas” in an interactive installation, a giant swing hung by a tree with dangling e-readers featured quarter-life crisis literature, Philippe Blanchard constructed sculptural and 2D elements with expanded animation, and Marisa Hoicka had an interactive performance installation based on escapism.

On the dance floor, beats by Alex Merrell and Diego Armand kept attendees dancing all night under the animations of Jesi the Elder. And the roasted bison on a spit (from Marc Thuet) was an added plus for the famished crowd. It wasn’t art-worthy, but it was a feast for the eyes.

Let’s celebrate the hottest charity events of the season. Fashion Cares 25 Titled “A Night of Glitter and Light,” the 25th anniversary of Fashion Cares was an evening that made every attendee the star of their own (runway) show. Since 1987, Fashion Cares has combined local and international fashion talent in a celebrity studded evening that would raise funds for HIV/AIDS causes.

Taking place at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts, the night was hosted by supermodel Linda Evangelista and Dean and Dan Caten of fashion label DSquared2, while superstar headliner Elton John and his friends (international musical guests Scissors Sisters, Janelle Monáe, Sky Ferreira) roused the crowd with a roster of local talent that included Devine Brown, Jarvis Church, Jully Black, and Shawn Desman. Putting the fashion in Fashion Cares were runway presentations that included striking looks from the UK (Vivienne Westwood, Gareth Pugh), Milan (DSquared2), Paris (Elie Saab, Stephane Rolland), NYC (The Blondes) and Toronto (Hoax Couture, Izzy Camilleri).

A Spotlight on two Canadian Designers

RN: It was more of an epiphany actually. I wa cramming for my last final exam in the stude lounge and all of a sudden it hit me that I shou become a fashion designer! It just never occurre to me before that fashion design was a job- it wa always just something I did. I am a adventurou person, and, once I get an idea in my head - I go f it. Luckily listening to my instincts then as alwa takes me where I need to be.

Winnipeg native, Roxanne Nikki, took a swift turn from her Bachelor of Arts in anthropology and sociology to start her career in fashion design. She shares a few wise words with us.

Fall 2012

How has your Bachelor Degree of Arts in Anthropology and Society helped you become a strong and successful designer? RN: I majored in cultural anthropology at university. My degree was not a conscious precursor to fashion design so I can ‘t say it helped me directly with my fashion career . Growing up in my family, university was just another passage to adulthood. I was always creative, travelled much as a child and was constantly exposed to fashion, art and culture growing up. Fashion, like any art form is a reflection of our society and culture. Everything is connected!

After living in three world renowned cities (Montrea Paris and Vancouver), where would you say yo vision of modern luxury and nonstop chic fir began? RN: I have been designing all my life. I am as wel lifelong traveller and constant observer. My visio is born of a natural evolution of my design aesthe through all the experiences and places I have bee in my life combined. ROXANNE NIKKI is for th world citizen, a mix of easy glamour, versatility an modern taste. It doesn’t matter where you live. T be effortless is true chic whether super trendy classic- this is the heartbeat of my label and visio

Fashion means something different to everybod from the designers and the models to the customer As a designer, what does fashion mean to you? RN: Fashion is my art form, and my life danc Through designing I am able to bring my idea into the tangible realm, and share my viewpoin with anyone who wants to experience them.

With so many younger women and even me What would you say was your turning point in starting to pick up the sewing needle, what advic realizing after graduating from the University would you give to an aspiring designer? of Winnipeg that you could build a career as a RN: Dream big, stay humble, work hard, kee learning and give with all your love. What matters to you most as a fashion designer? What do you do to stay true to that? LM: To be as open to beauty, to art, to music and freedom of expression as I possibly can. Fall 2012

Frank Ocean Channel Orange

After releasing his wildly successful mixtape Nostalgia, Ultra, Frank Ocean is back with his first studio album, Channel Orange. The young artist is no stranger in the music community. He penned ballads for music heavyweights like John Legend and Justin Bieber prior to the start of his solo career. A few weeks before Channel Orange was set to debut, Ocean posted an open letter online confessing that his first love someone of the same sex. His revelation seemed to overshadow the raw brilliance of the album, which undeniably showcases Ocean’s impressive vocal range and coveted writing talents. Love songs on the album are unique for the fact that they feature both male and female subjects; something that is practically unheard of on a mainstream pop release. The work features guest appearances from Ocean’s ODD FUTURE comrades, an instrumental appearance by John Mayer, and a track produced by The Neptunes’ Pharrell Wiliams. The memorable debut studio release is an impressive beginning to Ocean’s career.

Jack White is reminiscent of a singing Edward Scissorhands – hopelessly pale, eccentric, and impossible to look away from. Blunderbuss is a triumph. White boasts sole writing credit on all but one song on the album, in addition to being one of the main instrumental contributors. Ghanaian native Ruby Amanfu backs White with her unearthly, shivering voice on the lead single “Love Interruption”; a quiet and soft piece. The song “Missing Pieces” takes listeners on a gore-filled ride as White describes the pain of one lover stealing another’s heart with a twist: his lover seems to have literally left with his body parts. Typically, White evades revealing too much about his personal life, making it hard to tell whether or not this album has any autobiographic content. Regardless, this release leaves little to be desired, another stellar achievement by rock guru Jack White.

Janelle Monáe, queen of quirky, takes listeners to her very own imaginary universe, Metropolis, on the 2010 release The ArchAndroid. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly which genre this album fits into. Her soulful, dreamy cadence on tracks like “Neon Valley Street”, and “Oh, Maker” are reminiscent of neosoul songstresses like Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu. Monáe changes the pace with the song, “Come Alive (The War of the Roses)”, which is a combination whispers and screams that sounds more like what’s expected on a punk release than anything R&B or neo-soul. Regardless of the category, the beautifully composed album certainly has something for everyone, and is consistently satisfying throughout. Monáe has heralded unanimous praise for her stage presence as well. Her shows are notoriously high energy and her signature black tuxedo and pompadour hair style both draw attention to her appearance (she’s always in the same getup), but prove that her appearance isn’t the point – it’s all about the music. The ArchAndroid is the second and third component of a four-part series set in Metropolis. Its success and dynamism build poignant anticipation for the fourth and final part.

Florence + the Machine Ceremonials

Florence Welsh and Isabella Summers are Florence + the Machine, an indie-rock band from London, England. After enjoying much local success for the past few years, the release of Ceremonials has brought the band onto the world-stage. The infectious single “Shake It Off”, with its inspirational lyrics and choir-backed hook, is part of the must-see live performance the pair and their band have been crafting around the new album. Welsh is an unmistakeable force on stage, eerie and gorgeous with live vocal capability that does her album recordings justice. Ceremonials is a strong addition to the group’s stellar discography – a fine balance between the appeals of pop and music with a real message.

The Legs

That’s right guys, (just like a woman) a well prepared and aged Scotch will have legs for days. When Scotch or any liquor for that matter is swirled in its glass, the “legs” of the drink can then be seen slowly making their way down the side of your glass. The slower the legs trickle back down to the glass is and indication of the length of time the Scotch was bottled, as well as its strength. It should also be noted that the addition of large amounts of caramel can also produce long slow moving legs and should not be the sole method of judging a new malt.

hile those who have been drinking Scotch for a while know what to look for when purchasing or tasting a new single malt, this is for those who are interested in branching out and trying something as unique as the distilleries and casks they are stored in. First and foremost we are talking about “Scotch” meaning the whisky must be distilled in one of the many distilleries found throughout the many regions of Scotland (Islay, Speyside, Lowlands, etc). Once you have acquired your single malt of choice, you are going to want to do a classic tasting to truly Nosing see and appreciated what it is you are getting in to. Few drinks can conjure up the sense of intimidation like a dram (glass) of Scotch, not just for it’s unique taste but also for it’s abundance of history and etiquette. Finally, after all of the swirling, eyeballing and sniffing, you finally get to taste your purchase. Scotch is not a drink for you to shoot down like vodka in a college dorm room, nor is it a beer that’s meant to be finished in 10-15 minutes. Scotch is one of the “noble liquors”, it is meant to be sipped and savoured for its complexity. When taking your first sip, be sure to allow it to coat your tongue, giving it the chance to coat your taste buds completely, take note not only of the flavours but the texture. Is it slightly smoky or velvety smooth? While all Scotch is aged in oak casks, the species of oak adds a very different element. A single malt aged in casks previously used to store Sherry (Sherry Casks) will have a different and distinct taste over a single malt aged in casks that once held bourbon (Bourbon Casks).

Double Cross

Vodka Slovak Republic $59.95

White Owl

Produced in Slovakia, the makers insist that their luxury vodka is seven-times distilled and seven-times filtered and made using locallygrown winter wheat and mountain spring water sourced from 200ft. deep aquifers. Its nose is mellow and it has a hint of grain and citrus. It goes down just like a vodka of its calibre should, but it leaves a slight tingle after swallowed... It must be the diamond dust left over from the filtering process.

Alberta’s Highwood Distillers, a well-known Canadian Whisky company, has produced a fully matured amber whisky, but they filter the colour out of it. After an initial nosing, you’ll find that there’s a familiar yet surprising scent - it resembles citrus pop! Although initially, you’ll have hints of citrus fruits, the ending will leave your palate with a light smokey oak.

Ghouls by Gaslight

Fall 2012

It’s the time of year where zombies replace the suits in the financial disrict and the shuffling zombies of the financial district remove their suits and don blood and gore in place of their ties and cufflinks. RueMorgue, Toronto’s #1 source for horror in culture and entertainment is once again hosting their 15th annual Halloween party on October 27th at The Phoenix.
