Letter from the Founders As 2009 comes to a close we are reflecting on our personal and business decisions that we made this past year and wonder what 2010 has in store for us. We look back on the weight we gained, the exercise that didn’t get done, the time we spent devoted to working instead of spending time with our families as well as all of those knitting projects that we completed only halfway. This year we vow to ourselves that we will change all of that and make good on our resolutions and follow through and finish what we start. The other day my daughter told me that I never finish anything, I start a diet and then fall off the wagon, I start a craft project and never finish it, I didn’t eat meat for a few weeks because I thought I can totally be a vegetarian, that didn’t happen either. This year I am making a promise to myself to eat better, exercise regularly and finish those projects that I start. I always make good on my business promises but not my personal promises. This year I vow to myself that I will make good on both! 2010 will be filled with exciting opportunities for us as well as our readers. Each issue we will be working hand in hand with a celebrity mom to bring you in a glimpse into what their busy lives are like and how they handle their careers and families. Mom entrepreneurs will also let us in on their secrets on how they juggle their busy families along with their growing businesses and we will be offering you tips on how to eat healthier and make healthy choices for your home. As we look forward to taking our magazine to print March 2010, we want to thank everyone who has helped us achieve this success. Here’s to a Healthy, Happy and Successful 2010!

Happy New Year! Kimberly & Becky

The Budget Mom Planning Family Outings on a Budget! _____________________________________________________________________ These days’ family outings seem so unaffordable. Just a few hours spent at the movie theater can average a family of four about $75, if you throw in a few drinks and popcorn or candy. Thinking back to my childhood, some of my greatest childhood memories were probably the least expensive outings. There are still some fun things you can do with your children at a reasonable cost, and sometimes even for free. You may just need a few good resources to help you find out what’s happening in your area, so get out of the house and have some fun with the kids! Summer is a great time to take advantage of the outdoors. Visiting a neighborhood park with a play ground is fun and good exercise. Throw a few cold drinks in a small cooler to take along, and the kids will spend hours in the play ground running, swinging, climbing, and sliding. If your area has a forest preserve, you can plan an outing with a large group of friends and family. Each family can bring a side dish, and you can grill burgers and hot dogs. Enjoy tossing the Frisbee or playing baseball with the kids. Most forest preserves have miles of trails lined with wild flowers for the kids to pick, and there may be some wildlife to see, such as rabbits, turtles, birds, and butterflies. When the weather is hot, pack a lunch and head for the beach! I remember playing in the sand, burying my brother and sisters, and spending hours in the water. My mom would cook hot dogs at home, wrap them in aluminum foil, and then put them in a thermal bag. There’s just something kids like about eating hotdogs at the beach. Even though my kids are older now, this is still one of our favorite things to do, and yes, I still pack the hot dogs! Your local library can be really fun for children. Picking out books to take home and marking the calendar with when the books need to be returned will help to teach children responsibility. There’s much more to do at the library than just take out books; your local library may offer activities for children once or twice a month, and story time may be an option a few times a month. Some libraries have computers with games for children to play, and movies to rent for free, or at a very low price. How about a camping trip? In most areas you won’t need to go too far to find a camp site. Think of all the fresh air you’ll be getting, and the time you’ll spend bonding with your family. There’s so many activities that go along with camping; fishing, hunting, biking, and hiking. At night you can gather around the campfire and share scary stories. You can even camp out in your own back yard, so pitch a tent, grab the sleeping bags, light the fire, and let the camping begin! Jan/Feb ◊ SCM

Winter doesn’t mean you have to stay indoors. If you live near a park with a hill, buy a sled or snow tubes, bring a thermos full of hot chocolate, and have fun sledding and playing in the snow. It may be a good idea to visit a zoo in the winter months, as they are less crowded when the weather is cold. There are still plenty of animals that are housed indoors to learn about. With fewer crowds you can take your time as you stroll from building to building. Museums are a great place to take the family in the winter too. Depending on where you live and the museums in your area, you may be able to spend several hours, or even a day walking and learning with your children. Be aware that last minute planning can be more costly. For example, the museum may have discounted tickets on a certain day of the week, and if you were planning on buying that sled, it will probably be much cheaper at the end of winter season. If your kids enjoy music, check your local newspaper for free concerts in the park. The newspaper will also have a list of events in your area. You can also contact a nearby college to inquire about upcoming events such as concerts and plays; and they are usually at a reasonable price. The bottom line is, we all want to have fun with our families; we just don’t want to go broke doing it. It’s important to spend quality time with them; whether you do it in your back yard, the park, or at a local event in your neighborhood. There are still a lot of fun things to do at little or no cost. So grab the kids, get out and have some fun! Sincerely,

The Budget Mom www.hushabyebabyproducts.com

Healthy Living Tips for Mothers

IT’S EASY

by Cynthia Drasler Host of Healthy Living Is Easy Radio Show www.HealthyLivingIsEasy.com

It’s easy for mothers to live a healthy lifestyle. The same mental and emotional adaptability that is necessary to raise children, serves equally well in creating a healthy lifestyle - easily. In the current health care climate, the best plan is to stay as healthy as possible for as long as possible. Here are five EASY tips that will help.

Eat Healthy and in the Right Combinations. Eating healthy foods is clearly the easiest and most inexpensive way of improving or maintaining health. Eat organic food whenever possible because organic foods do not contain pesticides therefore will not add toxins to the body. There is an increasing body of evidence that shows eating the right combinations of foods can prevent diseases while mitigating the symptoms of many others. For example, eating cranberries and blueberries can prevent bladder infections. Strawberries and blueberries have been shown to possess anti-cancer properties. Blackberries have powerful antioxidants that slow the aging process. Sour cherry juice and ginger are helpful in lessening arthritis pain. One study found that a component of carrots called falcarinol demonstrated a delay in the growth of colon tumors. These examples represent only a fraction of the studies that have proven that what you eat DOES matter.

Avoid Plastic Food Containers. The chemical Bisphenol A (BPA) is a standard component found in plastic containers that leeches into food from plastic containers and plastic wraps. It mimics estrogen in the body and is implicated as a contributing factor in breast cancer and prostate cancer - among other diseases. Find a pure, food grade stainless steel water bottle WITHOUT a plastic liner or use a container made from glass to drink beverages from during the day. Avoiding plastic containers for eating, drinking and cooking will significantly reduce daily toxic exposures. It’s easy.

While the FDA announced that BPA was perfectly safe less than a year ago, they have recently been reconsidering their position. The head of the primary federal agency studying the safety of bisphenol A said that people should avoid ingesting the chemical - especially pregnant women, infants and children. "There are plenty of reasonable alternatives," said Linda Birnbaum, director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the National Toxicology Program, in an interview with the Journal Sentinel. She firmly believes that the public should be warned about the toxicity of BPA.

Dry Cleaned Clothes. Be clean and pressed without being toxic. Never hang dry cleaned clothes in the closet while they are still in the plastic bag. Take them out of the plastic and hang them outside for an hour before storing them in the closet. This will dissipate most of the toxic chemical solvent perchloroethylene (PERC) used in the dry cleaning process. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences states: "Short-term exposure to PERC can cause adverse health effects on the nervous system that include dizziness, fatigue, headaches, sweating and lack of coordination. Long-term exposure can cause liver and kidney damage." Airing dry cleaned clothes outside before hanging them in the closet will help eliminate toxins your body and from your home. It’s easy.

Choose Safe Shampoos and Soaps. Before the 1940’s cleansers and detergents in shampoos and soaps were derived from natural fatty oils (i.e. coconut and palm oil). The development of the toxic petroleum based detergents used today can be traced back to World War II. During World War II, German chemists invented the process of synthesizing detergents from petroleum when they were under an economic blockage by our allies and did not have access to enough natural fatty oils to meet their detergent needs. They found that their new petroleum derived detergents were much more powerful and therefore more effective at removing dirt, grease and oil from machinery than the milder detergents (derived from natural fatty oils). These new petroleum detergents were also less expensive to manufacture than the detergents derived from natural fatty oils. But, while petroleum derived detergents are great for de-greasing engines, they should never have been added to personal care products because they are toxic to human skin. When they are formulated into shampoos, soaps, and cleaning products, they remove the healthy and necessary components of hair and skin along with the dirt and oil. In fact, they completely strip the hair and scalp of all its oil and moisture which impairs proper Jan/Feb ◊ SCM

Designer Spotlight Airianne Fink of Pinc Premium

Jan/Feb â—Š SCM

29

Designer Spotlight Pinc Premium is a division of a larger family owned company based out of Brooklyn, New York. The Pinc Premium brand was started 5 years ago with the intent of creating premium high style denim for girls aged infant to 14 offered at a reasonable price point. Designer, Airianne Fink joined the Pinc team in 2008, her AS in Fashion Design and Marketing from IADT in Florida helped her land the role of designer at Pinc Premium. Airianne envisions the Pinc Premium brand as sophisticated sportswear for girls. Growing up Airianne had no desire to wear "girls" clothes- with all the hearts and flowers and sparkles. So, in designing Pinc, she looks to the ladies runway shows and high fashion for inspiration and styles that she can convert to the children's wear level. The result is a trendy line with styles that are fashionable but age appropriate for a little girl. Pinc Premium recently added separate tops and outerwear- which are getting great reaction from buyers and consumers. All the tops are produced in their Brooklyn factory and with the garments being produced close to home, Airianne states "It's like instant gratification for me, I can send a sketch over and see a finished garment in as little as a few days. It is pretty exciting to be able to come up with an idea late in the season and be able to add it to the line the next week instead of the next season. The buyers love it because we can jump onto a trend just as it's getting hot." Although, Airianne enjoys designing the tops for the brand her true love is the denim, she shared with us that she gets attached to her denim designs and when she receives a box of the finished product she gets excited. The denim line is her baby. Airianne is proud of the Pinc Premium brand and how the company works together to continue expanding the line to add new styles making every season better than the one before. The bookshelf Getting cozy on the sofa with a glass of wine and a good book is a favorite past time of ours. Here are a few of our all time favorite books that we recommend reading this winter.

Jan/Feb â—Š SCM

35

The bookshelf Yes, we know the movie was great but the book that made it’s debut years earlier was fabulous. The first of the series, Confessions of a Shopaholic, was a hit and made us laugh from beginning to end. Rebecca Bloomwood, the star of the series, is a character that you just fall in love with, no matter what mistakes she makes. You can purchase the entire series at www.barnesandnoble.com

I wasn’t sure if I would like this book when I first purchased it so it sat on my bookshelf for quite sometime until I was a bit desperate for a reading fix. I was pleasantly surprised with the writing style of Kate Jacobs and was pulled in by the wonderful characters in this book especially Georgia. The book is a little sad and you may want to reach for a tissue at the end but we absolutely loved it. Available at www.barnesandnoble.com

I had read a few books by Emily Griffin before reading this one and this book, I would have to say, is my favorite. You know the old story: Girl meets Boy, Girl marries Boy, then Girl bumps into a Boy who broke her heart years before the second boy came along and then Girl wonders if she made the right decisions in her life. This book as well as Emily Griffin’s other books are available at www.barnesandnoble.com

The bookshelf Since I love chick reads I was a bit hesitant to read the Women’s Murder Club Series by James Patterson. But once I read the first paragraph of 1st to Die I was hooked. The series now is up to 8 books and I have read them all as well as many other books by James Patterson. His books are fast paced and are easy to read. The story lines have so many twists they keep you guessing until the very end. View all of the books by James Patterson at www.barnesandnoble.com
