nyone looking for a romantic place for a picnic, a spot to cast a line or looking to learn more about local history, needs to cruise by Centreville and check out the Langley Covered Bridge, a bridge named in USA Today as one of the nation’s top 10 greatest remaining covered bridges.
A
Located three miles north of Centreville on Silver Street in St. Joseph County, this beautifully-maintained, wooden, covered bridge is the longest existing bridge of its kind in the state of Michigan, giving it a unique status and distinct look that make it a popular attraction certainly worth a look. Named after Thomas W. Langley and his family, the pioneers who established the village of Centreville during the 19th century, the bridge was built in the fall of 1887 by Pierce Bodner, of nearby Parkville. Constructed with the Howe truss system, using top-quali-

ty white pine for the frame timbers, the bridge was created in three spans, each 94 feet long, 16 feet high and 19 feet wide. In order to keep the structure useable for vehicle traffic, the Langley Covered Bridge has seen many repairs and improvements. In 1910, it was raised eight feet during construction of the Sturgis Dam. However it still sits unusually low for a river crossing. In the 1940 , with traffic changing from horse and foot to motor vehicles, adding much more weight, the bridge was being pushed to its limits, causing extensive repairs to be made during 1950-51 by the St. Joseph County Road Commission. Repairs included lifting it and replacing old foundation timbers with new wood reinforced with channel steel. In 1965, the bridge’s roof was lifted a foot higher to accommodate taller vehicles and whole bridge got a fresh coat of paint. That same year, the Langley Covered Bridge was officially listed with the Michigan State Register and was awarded a Michigan Historical Marker. Currently, there is a petition to restore the bridge to its original glory and color — a specific shade of red — and those interested in contributing are asked to contact the St. Joseph County Historical Society. Near the bridge is Pahl Point Park, a perfect spot for picnics and other outdoor

activities, most especially during the Covered Bridge Days, which is an annual summer festival held on the third weekend in June to celebrate this very special bridge.

B
These days that same “Boom” can be heard in Coldwater, Mich., during the 7th annual Civil War Days. The yearly event is held on Memorial Day weekend, May 24-26 at Heritage Park. The public is invited to participate in and experience life during the Civil War. A number of free activities are offered throughout the weekend beginning with a concert on the grounds on Friday evening. Saturday morning starts the reenactment portion of the event. Camps are set up with real housekeeping circa late 1800s. Many of the home arts are demonstrated with some hands-on opportunities. Tours include Civil War artifact displays and Northern and Southern school settings. In the midst of the hubbub will be a vintage baseball tournament with true ball clubs representing teams playing by 1860s rules. At 2 p.m., the battles of Gettysburg, Devil’s Den, and Little Round Top are recreated in the Enjoy MICHIANA.com
natural amphitheater located on the grounds. The day ends with a military and civilian ball at 7 p.m. that is open to the public. Costumes are optional with an opportunity to borrow an outfit for a donation. Sunday offers many of the same activities plus a non-denominational service held in the morning. The train rides are a popular part of the festivities. On Friday, the Little River Railroad train will pick up President Lincoln and transport him to Heritage Park for the remainder of the weekend. On Saturday morning, another train ride is offered with a little twist. You can experience a train robbery on this ride as was common during the war years. The train rides do cost, but are well worth the price and quite often fill up early.

One of the proudest achievements of the Civil War Days Executive Committee is their annual Education Day where 1,000 Branch County and surrounding area school children get a personal look at the Civil War. The children meet with many of the reenactors and experience life in the 1860s firsthand. It is a full day of an exciting learning experience. Education Day is by invitation only. This is an opportunity for families to truly participate in America’s history and make Memorial Day more memorable. By experiencing the Civil War events firsthand, participants can observe and feel a part of history. Spectators of all ages will gain a new perspective by visiting this authentic and carefully planned event.

Enjoy Gene Stratton Porter Museum
Story and Photos by Laura Kurella are to catch a beautiful breeze from Sylvan Lake whilst sitting on a renowned author’s front porch? Then a drive to the Gene Stratton-Porter state historic site in Rome City needs to be placed in your appointment book.
C
The Stratton Cabin, which is nestled on the shores of Sylvan Lake near Rome City, Ind., is one of the former homes of Gene Stratton-Porter, one of Indiana’s most widely-read authors and one of the world’s first and best nature photographers. Her cabin, which is an historic site, is still surrounded by the beautiful undeveloped forest that provided material for Gene’s nature studies, writings and photography. Porter developed the wildflower gardens using plants from all around the state and her gardens, arbor, orchard and the scenic paths are kept just as she created them so long ago. Encompassing 125 acres, 20 of which were part of Porter’s original property, it’s a beautiful walk back in time that gives you your own, personal, “back story” behind all of her books. The cabin, which was designed by Porter and built in 1913, is a two-story with exterior walls made of Wisconsin cedar logs. Local wild cherry was used to panel the entrance hall 18

and dining room and the first floor boasts three extraordinary fireplaces: one of polished English brick, one of Indiana artifacts and stones collected from other states and one of puddiní stone. Furnishings in the home are arranged and maintained to reflect — as authentically as possible — Porter’s lifestyle. Much of the furniture and personal memorabilia, including Porter’s library, are preserved at the home, all of which can be viewed on the tour. Born on Aug. 17, 1863, in the small town of Lagro in rural Wabash County, Ind., Porter began her writing career by writing about her love — nature. She submitted her writings and photographs to magazines and was published in several including Recreation, Outing, and Metropolitan. At age 40, Porter wrote, “Song of the Cardinal,” her first of many novels, which she created by combining her knowledge and love of nature with stories of romance and hardship, adventure, and memorable characters. Porter went on to publish 12 novels, seven nature studies, three books of poetry, children’s books and many magazine articles, with her fame growing with each work she produced. In 1912, Porter and her husband moved to Sylvan Lake in Rome City where they built the cabin that still stands there and created the trails in the vast forest around it that allowed Porter to continue her nature studies, writing and photography and at the same time help preserve endangered plants in her gardens. Though dying at age 61 in Los Angeles from injuries due to a traffic accident, Porter’s remains are laid to rest in her beloved woods near her cabin in Rome City.

Framed by Lake James and Snow Lake, which offer abundant opportunities for boating, swimming, fishing and scenic sunsets, Pokagon features unique work of the Civilian Conservation Corps, who from 1934 to 1942, built beautiful stone and log structures that still dot the park landscape, providing an accent to the rolling wooded hills, wetlands, open meadows and handsome places to picnic or merely perch and enjoy the view. Pokagon offers the opportunity for many great outdoor activities for kids and adults, beginning with its nature center, which offers free activities daily for everyone. There is also a beautiful beach with a swimming area, dozens of places to picnic, a horseback riding stable, playground areas and a volleyball court, boat rentals, and abundant wildlife to take in while hiking on one of their numerous trails. Enjoy Yoder’s Country Market
Story and Photos by Laura Kurella oder’s Country Market in Centerville knows that nothing compares to the taste of a freshly-made doughnut, so they expanded their business to include a brand new bakery to make doughnuts fresh every day.
Y
The new bakery, which offers a fresh variety of baked goods, is just one of many good reasons to visit Yoder’s in Centerville, which is located on M-86, just behind the McDonald’s. Offering a wide variety of goods, a trip inside Yoder’s is a real treat for all of your senses. Start by browsing down aisle after aisle of special dry and canned goods, Amish wares and locally-made gifts. There you will find plenty to peruse, including lots of candies and nuts and spices, all packed in affordable, bulk containers. Be sure to file past the freezer and check out their fine selection of meats that are grain fed and hormone-free, all wrapped and ready to pop into your freezer. Set your eyes on the salad bar in the center of the store. There you will find something unheard of - fresh tossed salad sold by the pound. Load a large container with all your favorite salad fixins found in two side-byside bars domed with dozens of delights to feast on. It’s the best way to get the most green for your green and try some of their 28

Once you’ve finished grazing, the sandwich shop is a must stop for ready-to-eat wings, pulled pork and ribs — recipes that everyone is raving about — or if a sandwich is what will satisfy, get one made to order that you can enjoy in the dining area or get packed up to take home. foot-long deli counter. Offering a huge selection of meats, cheeses, salads and desserts, all of which can be packed to order, you can put together a terrific selection to take home. Yoder’s will kindly let you samples anything you’d like to taste before purchasing. Be sure to also taste any samples they have out, too, because it’s a great way to find something new and delicious. Yoder’s deli offers catering and party trays too, making it a convenient, one-stop shopping experience for all your deli tray needs and any of their deli salads and BBQ meats can be purchased in bulk for weddings, graduation parties and summer picnics, too. In addition to making doughnuts and other baked goods, the on-site bakery takes personal orders, too so, whether your baking needs are large or small, all you have to do is give Yoder’s a call. T
Named one of “Ten Drive-Ins Worth a Detour” by both the USA Today and The New York Times, the Capri Drive-in is a diamond of a drive-in that has been well cared for by the same family since it first opened in the summer of 1964. Located on U.S. 12, just west of downtown Coldwater, this drive-in is an eyecatching, classic beauty that offers the convenience of two entrance lanes into its two-screen theater lot, which can hold approximately 900 cars. Originally filled with speaker poles, the drive-in now transmits the film’s audio through your car stereo, bringing that indoor theater sound quality to your outdoor show experience. The Capri offers driveways with illuminated lane markers to make it easy to find your way to your one of their two screens. Screen #1 is 150’ x 75’ Selby tower and 30

it is one of the largest screen towers still in use today. Screen #2 is 80’ x 40’ steel tower and it once served a Detroit-area drive-in until it was disassembled and shipped to Coldwater then re-assembled at the Capri in 1986. Both projection rooms utilize new digital projection equipment to produce the brightest picture possible and both offer both AM and FM Stereo sound for both screens. If you do not wish to use the radio in your vehicle, the Capri will provide you with a portable for a $2 rental fee. No drive-in experience would be complete without a trip to the snack bar, and the Capri’s concession is one that has consistently ranked as one of the best DriveIn concessions in operation. Enjoy Riegsecker Carriage
Story by Julie Baratta ave you ever wondered what it was like to ride on a carriage through a pleasant small town on a beautiful spring day?
H
Well, wonder no more! In Shipshewana, the opportunity awaits you in the form of carriage rides offered by Riegsecker Marketplace. The Riegsecker Marketplace is a conglomerate of several shops, a restaurant, a theater, and the carriage rides. In 1970, Mel Riegsecker started creating specialized miniature wagons with six horse hitches, all authentically recreated. The small units sold as quickly as he could make them and are the basis for the marketplace. The carriage rides began in 1986 when a customer requested a ride through Shipshewana. The carriages soon became a familiar sight on the streets and continue to be popular today. In 2011, it was determined that folks from 48 countries and many U.S. states had ridden on the carriages in that year 34

alone. The first rides of the year are in May and continue through November with weather permitting conditions. There are between 10 and 12 horses that work the route six days a week from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. The current mangers, Elmer and Margaret Schwartz, started in 2008. They care for all the horses in the stable including 22 Percherons, eight ponies, and three riding horses. In addition, they help farm 80 acres where hay is produced for feed and Enjoy MICHIANA.com
to train the carriage horses. They are continually working on new tour ideas and are introducing the “Barn Tour” for 2013. This ride will include a stop at the horse barns to observe the living arrangements for the animals, a close-up look at the equipment and an opportunity to see the Percherons. Percherons are a draft horse whose original breeding came from France. The breed is recognized as one with a good temperament, an intelligent mind, a calm personality and an obedient spirit. Thus, they are natural driving horses, good for carriage or buggy rides.
Enjoy MICHIANA.com
There are also some special tours for visitors to appreciate. “Dine with the Amish” is a buggy ride to an Amish home where the guests are served a traditional familystyle meal, catered by the Blue Gate Restaurant. After supper is finished, the buggy will complete the evening by returning to town with its passengers. These carriages and horses are available for private parties, sleigh rides, weddings, and parades. Come to Shipshewana and experience the town in a whole new way abroad a carriage from Riegsecker Marketplace.
