Hahoetal (Hahoe Mask)

■■■ Is there a traditional dance in your native country performed with masks? There is a special dance performance in Korea done wearing traditional masks called tal. The tal come in various shapes like animals and human faces with diverse expressions. The most representative and well-known of these masks is the Hahoetal. This mask originated in the Hahoe village in Kyeongsangbuk-do (province) near Andong city, and it was first made for people in the lower classes to mimic and make fun of people of the upper classes. There are 11 different types of tal, and there are all different of forms of these masks including women, upper class scholars, and monks.
