Packs a lot of processing power into 1U of rack space. Much of the manufacturing cost is in metal work and power supplies. The cost of additional channels is minimal so such units provide good value for money. All channels are identical. The Multicom unusually features both the famous soft/hard knee compression techniques. The soft knee curve is musically more acceptable and easier to set. Hard knee is more predictable and defines the parameters so is favoured by many. Programme dependent Attack and Release times provide for easy setting up. Controls are provided for Ratio, Threshold and Output level. An eight point LED ladder provides the appropriate gain reduction information. The Interactive Auto Compressor provides inaudible compression. The advanced program-adaptive expander gate makes control settings much more accurate. The MDX4600 can be configured in many ways which further increases it’s versalility. Inputs and outputs balanced/unbalanced on Jacks and XLRs. Channels are linkable.

The dbx 266XL utilises dbx’s expertise, employing their OverEasy compression and True RMS Power Summing. The expander/gate has a threshold from -65 to +15dBu with a ratio of 1.2:1 to 8:1. The compressor has identical thresholds and ratios with an Attack control ranging from 3dB/mSec to 0.04dB/mSec. Compression can be set to OverEasy. The release time is variable between 250 and 5dB /Sec. These can be set to manual or automatic to become programme dependent. This is followed by an output gain control. Threshold status either above or below the desired level. The amount of gain reduction is displayed on an LED bargraph. There are bypass and stereo link switches. Inputs and outputs are on XLRs.
