GLOSSARY CERVICAL: the cervical column constitutes the neck and is composed of 7 vertebrae. KYPHOSIS: curvature of the vertebral column with anterior concavity. The dorsal is physiological within certain limits while particularly pronounced kyphosis or kyphoscoliosis are often associated with pathologies. VERTEBRAL COLUMN: also called rachis, is the set consisting of the vertebrae (7 cervical, 12 dorsal or thoracic, 5 lumbar, the sacrum formed by the fusion of 5 vertebrae and the coccyx) articulated between them and forming a bone axis fundamental both for the body's support function and for the protection of the spinal cord. In a normal vertebral column we find two types of curves: lordosis (in cervical and lumbar tracts) with a posterior concavity, and kyphosis (thoracic) with anterior concavity. It is precisely the alternation of these curves that gives the column important elastic and resistive properties.

Maintaining our body full of joints and moving parts resting on our feet is a very complex task that is carried out by the central and peripheral nervous system thanks to a sophisticated system of control and management of the muscular system. ERGONOMICS: it is the science that deals with the interaction between the elements of a system and the function for which they are designed, in order to improve user satisfaction and the overall performance of the system. LUMBAR: the lumbar spine consists of 5 vertebrae that constitute the axis of support of the abdomen. LORDOSI: curvature of the vertebral column that creates a frontal convexity. Commonly the term lordosis is associated with a very accentuated hollows in the lumbar region, which projects back the pelvis. BACK PAIN: scientifically rachialgia (or depending on the trait that affects: low back pain, cervicalgia or dorsalgia), is a sensation of pain that can come from the muscles, nerves, bones, joint surfaces or other structures in the vertebral column. Back pain can be "high", with pain in the neck that can radiate to arms and hands, or "low" with pain in the lower back area that can spread to legs and feet. It can include other symptoms in addition to pain, such as weakness, a feeling of falling asleep or tingling. POSTURE: term used to indicate the variability of the ways in which the stations are maintained. In simple terms, it is the particular way of maintaining certain positions. The correct posture is nothing but the most appropriate and ergonomic position of our body in space. SACRAL: the sacrum is the result of the fusion of five bony segments. It is articulated with the last lumbar vertebra and ends providing a climax to which, in turn, the coccyx is combined. SCOLIOSIS: it is a condition that implies a complex lateral curvature and rotation of the vertebral column. It can be single or double curve.

Our body was created to stay upright. Sitting down is certainly less tiring than standing up and that's why we resort to the chair to work, study or in general when the work to be done takes longer. Although apparently impossible, the sitting position overloads the column much more than the erected station and is therefore the cause of numerous disturbances.

The load on the disks, when seated, is at least 40% more than the standing position. In fact, in industrialized countries the incidence of problems in the spine (low back pain, sciatica, cervicalgia, mytension headache, discopathy, etc.) goes from 75 to 90%, compared to about 7-18% of non-industrialized countries. This is due to the sedentary lifestyle and the use of non-ergonomic seating.

Sitting well changes your life. Unfortunately, the sedentary lifestyle is a sneaky risk, as the damage is not perceived while it happens and for this reason it is difficult to identify the cause: in fact, although experiencing discomfort in a sitting position, the most serious symptoms occur later, when we use the column for move and therefore when the damage is already done. This is why ergonomics has long considered that sitting correctly is a fundamental factor for prevention. In children and adolescents, these concepts are even more important because alterations that are structured during the growth period will represent permanent damage in adulthood.

Statism and musculoskeletal disorders. Scientific research has long made it clear that sitting, for periods longer than 3 hours a day, involves the onset of numerous muscular and skeletal disorders in the spine and circulatory lower limbs. While a few years ago incorrect posture was indicated as the main cause, today it is clear that, while maintaining an ergonomic position, the absence of movement causes overload and pain in the spine.

The maintenance of the sitting position causes the slowing down of the normal return of venous blood with its stasis at the level of the legs. In fact, while sitting, the rhythmic contraction of the calf muscles that "squeeze" the venous blood towards the root of the limb, avoiding stagnation. This is the main cause of symptoms such as heaviness, sometimes pain or tingling and feeling of constriction in legs and ankles.
