T

h e Pe s t a n a g r o u p h a v e o v e r 9 1 h o t e l s a n d r e s o r t s throughout Europe, South America, and Africa, and

in 2015 approached Glen + Company to lead the Interior design for their flagship American property on East 3 9 t h S t i n N e w Yo r k . T h e p r o p e r t y w a s a 9 6 k e y n e w construction project with architects GKA, constructed over 27 guest floors. The property was a unique design challenge as the site was only 20’-0� wide. By identifying key room types, I l e d a n e x t e n s i v e A DA r e v i e w o f t h e g u e s t r o o m l ay o u t s prior to the sketch design process. Once a compliant floor plan was approved, I worked to design, present and

document

the

interior

and

FFE

packages

from

conception through to model room, procurement and construction. A typical guest room in this property is a compact 170 square feet, including bathroom, so close attention was paid to designing efficient and finely detailed interior selections. By moving the vanity outside the bathroom we were able to achieve a generously proportioned entry to the room, and I developed a modular open wardrobe system to maximize vertical hanging space. The

property

n early 2018 I was assigned to develop the design

direction

and

FFE

package

for

a

members only Beach Club concept on a 55,000 square ft oceanfront site in the One Hotel South Beach. Wo r k i n g w i t h l o c a l a r c h i t e c t E O A , w e d e v e l o p e d a natural, textural concept inspired by the beaches of

their

p r o p e r t y. T h e

brief

was

to

i d e n t i f y k ey a r e a s o f t h e 7 0 0 r o o m h o t e l a n d i t ’s amenities

to

upgrade, then

develop

a

staging

proposal for the refresh program. Within the scope of the improvements was all 700 guest rooms and bathrooms, guest corridors and s i g n a g e , a s p o r t s b a r, g r a b a n d g o c o u n t e r, c o f f e e s h o p, p o o l d e c k a n d f u r n i t u r e, p o r t e c o c h e r e a n d gaming floor carpeting. Fo l l o w i n g

the

completion

of

the

upgrades,

t h e p r o p e r t y h a s u p g r a d e d f r o m a Tr i p A d v i s o r average score of 2.5 stars to the current 4 stars, and was completed on time and on budget with minimal disruption to hotel or gaming operation.

T h e A l Pa s t o r 3 9 t h S t r e e t p r o j e c t w a s a 6 m o n t h renovation of an existing bar venue which I led from sketch design through to completion. auditorium, including bar and amenities spaces, a function space, private members only venue, a full service restaurant and back of house areas. The House of Blues is the largest curator of ‘outsider art’ in the world, and integrates folk art by self-taught artists throughout every venue. I

assisted

in

the

curation

and

placement

of

hundreds of new and reclaimed art installations throughout the venue, from hand painted murals to a custom bar made using carved wood panels salvaged from an Indian temple. The project opened (with local rock band social distortion) in 2017 with an occupancy of 2200 patrons.

a n d i n t r o d u c e d i n s t a g r a m r e n o w n Tu r k i s h c h e f Nusret Gokce to the American restaurant scene in 2017. I was a part of the architectural and interior team who were engaged to execute the first

steakhouse

concept

on

East

53rd

st

in

Manhattan, located within the landmarked CBS Building. The chef has a passion for all things meat, so I wanted to create a space that paid reference to

the

butchery

process

with

a

subtle

and

tactile approach. Charred wood, reclaimed oak panelling and deep red marble accent the dining room, while a custom gabion wall filled with H i m a l a y a n r o c k s a l t f r a m e s t h e c e l l a r e n t r y. T h e project was a total renovation and required a new kitchen, staircase and custom furniture for over 200 guests. The restaurant opened in 2018. M i d - w a y t h r o u g h t h e c o n s t r u c t i o n o f N e w Yo r k , the team were asked to translate the concept to renovate a second venue in Miami. This Brickell location

was

converted

and

opened

within

8

weeks. Subsequently design development for the Knightsbridge, London location is in progress.



GABRIEL KREUTHER H A N D C R A F T E D C H O C O L AT E N ew Yo r k C i t y

T

he second project glen + company completed with two-Michelin star awarded Chef Gabriel

K r e u t h e r, K r e u t h e r H a n d c r a f t e d C h o c o l a t e s i s a retail space and kitchen dedicated to pastry chef M a r c Au m o n t ’s i n c r e d i b l e t a l e n t s. I w a s a m e m b e r of the design team from sketch design through construction to the opening in November 2016. We

agreed

that

it

was

critical

to

bring

the

finishing kitchen to the forefront, allowing the customer to become a part of the intricacies of the process. By creating a climate controlled, all glass kitchen in the storefront, the whole of

chocolate sculptures. The chef wanted to create a space that felt rough and industrial, to contrast against the highly f i n i s h e d d e s s e r t s . Fo l l o w i n g t h i s a p p r o a c h , w e looked to the Japanese art of kintsugi. Instead o f r e p l a c i n g t h e e x i s t i n g c r a c k e d c o n c r e t e f l o o r, we in filled the cracks with a gold epoxy resin, creating beauty in the faults of the space.

erth College have a reputation as one of the most established and

prestigious

independent

girls’

schools

in

Australia. I have been involved with this project from the winning competition entry and campus master development plan, through to the implementation of Stage 1: Senior Learning + Leadership C e n t r e. The Senior Learning + Leadership Centre was identified as the first project to be developed in response to the master plan. The site is located directly opposite to the 1927 college historic buildings and required collaboration with town planners and specialist consultants to achieve residential plot amalgamation a n d h e r i t a g e d e m o l i t i o n w o r k s. Wi t h r e c o g n i t i o n o f f o r m , s c a l e, m a t e r i a l s a n d t e x t u r e s, t h e S e n i o r Learning + Leadership Centre has been designed to enhance the strong character and identity of the historic campus whilst providing senior students with a contemporary education space t o a c c o m m o d a t e f l e x i b l e, c o l l a b o r a t i v e a n d s e l f p a c e d l e a r n i n g. I n a d d i t i o n t o l e a r n i n g a r e a s, T h e S e n i o r L e a r n i n g + L e a d e r s h i p Centre includes a dining hall, fully equipped commercial kitchen a n d e n c l o s e d b a s e m e n t c a r p a r k f o r 3 0 v e h i c l e s. T h e p r o j e c t i s c u r r e n t l y i n t h e c o n t r a c t d o c u m e n t a t i o n s t a g e, w i t h c o n s t r u c t i o n due to commence in early 2016.

was engaged in 2012 as a member of the design team undertaking f u l l a r c h i t e c t u r a l s e r v i c e s ; i n c l u d i n g b r i e f i n g, m a s t e r p l a n n i n g,

d e s i g n , d o c u m e n t a t i o n a n d d e l i v e r y, o f a f i t o u t f o r t h e S t a t e A d m i n i s t r a t i v e Tr i b u n a l ( S AT ) w i t h i n a n e x i s t i n g o f f i c e b u i l d i n g i n Pe r t h C i t y. During early design stages a high level of client consultation was undertaken on this project. I was involved in the planning and management of numerous working group sessions held with key stakeholders to identify the operational and functional r e q u i r e m e n t s o f t h e n e w f a c i l i t y, a s w e l l a s t h e p r e s e n t a t i o n o f extensive research undertaken establishing the conceptual design framework. Sustainable

and

innovative

design

principles

were

adopted

to enhance the quality and durability of workplaces including m a x i m i s i n g t h e a m o u n t o f n a t u r a l l i g h t i n t o a l l w o r k i n g a r e a s, maximising the efficiency of planning and designing an overall fit for purpose administrative facility with future growth potential. A key driver was the creation of perceived transparency between public and secure zones to reinforce the welcoming and informal nature of this court. As a significant State project, it was critical to ensure the materiality also made reference to place and the u n i q u e p hy s i c a l a n d c u l t u r a l a t t r i b u t e s o f We s t e r n A u s t r a l i a .



S

imple

rectilinear

building

elements

were

adopted

to

assist construction and helped to deliver an economical

o u t c o m e. To a c h i e v e r i c h n e s s a n d i n t e r e s t k e y f u n c t i o n a l a r e a s were considered as three-dimensional ‘objects’ and imbued w i t h u n i q u e a t t r i b u t e s. T h e r e l a t i o n s h i p b e t w e e n s o l i d a n d void, window and wall, and clear delineation of points of entry w a s e x p l o r e d i n t h i s p r o c e s s. To e n c o u r a g e a n e n v i r o n m e n t o f w a r m t h a n d c o m f o r t a s w e l l a s c e l e b r a t e t h e k a r r i f o r e s t s u n i q u e t o t h e S t a t e, m e d i a t i o n rooms can be considered spaces of shelter and security which sit within the ‘forest canopy’.

he brief for this studio was to create a series of images that allude t o a w a t e r i n s p i r e d p r o j e c t l o c a t e d i n Pe r t h . I s e l e c t e d a n e x i s t i n g

natural fault spring in Dalkeith as a site and created a conceptual sunken b a t h s, w i t h a w a t e r t o w e r a s a n a n c h o r e d m o n u m e n t t o t h e i m p o r t a n c e o f w a t e r a s a f a c e t o f o u r s e n s e o f p l a c e. T h i s p r o j e c t u s e s m i x e d m e d i a g r a p h i c t e c h n i q u e s i n c l u d i n g w a t e r c o l o u r, c h a r c o a l a n d c o l l a g e.





FURNITURE DESIGN Fi n a l Ye a r St u d i o

T

his project included an intensive exploration of the

theoretical,

historical

and

practical

aspects

of furniture design. Extensive material research and workshop training was undertaken to design and produce t h e X c h a i r. T h i s c h a i r w a s d e s i g n e d t o b e m a n u f a c t u r e d a s t w o f r a m e s, a s i m p l e s e a t a n d a b a c k s o i t c o u l d b e flat packed and easily assembled. I constructed the chair u s i n g l o c a l l y s o u r c e d k a r r i h a r d w o o d t i m b e r, c h a l l e n g i n g m y j o i n e r y s k i l l s u s i n g s u b t l y t a p e r e d g e o m e t r y.
