For me, as for most students, marks were much more important than what we actually learned. I was pretty serious. I was genuinely interested in most subjects and put a lot of effort into them. Still, I tried much harder during exam preparation. Theoretically, the test is just a test of what you have learnt in the course. In theory, you don't need to prepare for the test - just like you do for a blood test. In theory, you learn in class by listening to lectures, reading or doing assignments, and the subsequent exam simply shows how well you have studied.
