Module 2 Module 3

Module 4 REFlECTION

Module 1 HOW TO DRAW A CROISSANT?

Measured Drawing Of A Croissant

How to measure a Croissant? First, different views and cross sections were photographed or scanned in the exact size. Then a piece of tracing paper was covered onto the printed photos for tracing and sketching. Different pens and pencils were used for hatcing and tracing the croissants. I have learned that different density of brushwork can show the depth of an item.

Module 2 PLATNESS vs PROJECTION

6

New Mario world

The making of new Mario world.

Module 3 continued with the theme of axonometric projection, which requires us to make a 3-dimensional view from two pictures, sepearately looking from the from and the back side of the created Mario world.

7

The process of hatching of mario world.

Tools used in the drawing.

The back view of drawing.

The final hand drawing of the Mario world.

Module 3 PATTERN vs SURFACE

PAPER LANDSCAPE

The making of new landscape

Module 3 is concerned with the idea of developable surfaces and using Rhinoceros to make 3D modelling. A standard size of terrain was given to be constucted to make grids of different shapes. I was trying to make a sense of unordered.

Invisible city

Invisible city: Melania My story is about the changeable city Melania. “At Melania, every time you enter the square, you find yourself caught in a dialogue.” “You return to Melania after years and you find the same dialogue still going on... being replaced in their turn by the hypocrite, the confidante, the astrologer.” “Melania’s population renews itself: the participants in the dialogues die one by one and meanwhile those who will take their places are born, some in one role, some in another. “ “As time passes the roles, too, are no longer exactly the same as before.” I chose two perspectives, separately including a princess and a daughter, togerther with her father and a parasite.

Perspecive 1

This is a view of one of the kings who is awating for rcognition. He stares at the sky, considering what to do to attract the king’s attention.

Perspecive 2

This is a view of a parismony father and his nifty daughter, together with the parasite from the door. The combiniton of the three characters shows the changable character of this city.

REFLECTION Foundations of Design: Representation (FODR) required us to learn new skills via completing the tasks. Prior to this course, I did not know how to operate the mapping softwares like like In Design, Photoshop, Illustrator and Rhino. At first I was not so familiar with those softwares, which, to be honest, has restricted the level of details I conld have in my modules, but as the process going on, I gradually got familiar with the mapping softwares and it did speed up my progress in the module tasks. The aim of the whole course is to introduce and explore a variety of methods of design representation. I have gained skills and ability to compete the future individual design work and visual arts practice, and the contents of the lectures really broaden my knowledge in the area of design and developed my design skillset. The lectures and the recommended reading materials was well planned to concern with the studio sessions and corresponding module works. The four modules were well paced, thoughtful and progressive for new students to get into the design area. Though rough at first, FODR is still the most interesting subject I have chosen in my first semester in university, and it was really a good experience for me. I think the unsuccessful one is module 2, the Mario world. My work was lacking in multiple areas. At meanwhile, my drawing was not so accurate in the early phases to show the details. I could make more accurate mapping to eliminate the errors and avoid the lack of hidden spaces, as well as showing a higher level of clarity of lineweights and colours.
