The installation along forest creek emphasises forest spring by creating a rythmical body following the path of water. Mountain ash “backbone” highlights the stability and locality of the riverbed and white stones create a dynamism of the arched structure, which is revealed by the presence of wind, people and forest animals. This contrast between stable arch structure and hovering rocks is an expression of the spring’s duality - permanent but unexpected flow of water. The creek becomes the symbol of the forest vitality - it acts as a rendezvous point for all visible and hidden senses.

Manifesto Most of the nowadays social problems are active because of unfunctional and homogeneous communities. Challenges like racism, migration, unemployment, poverty, social inequality, injustice and many more emerge from the communities, where people stop interacting with each other. Even living in the same house, people have different opinions, ideas, hobbies, and lifestyles. However, sometimes it is hard to share them with others and pursue the life you want. Architectural and urban implementations make a huge impact on individual growth. The environment which surrounds individuals can either promote or discourage social cohesion. Buildings, roads, trees can both separate or connect and herewith are used to control the actions of people and nature. Though, gradually it is becoming more popular to let nature and people determine their own way by encouraging the choice through design. Archipelago is about that choice of freedom, where nature and the artificial form a new template for future development to follow. The design of a community center has changed from a meeting point that brings people together into a platform that connects people, nature and different communities. Diversity of opportunities generates the power of participation, where communication inspires knowledge, imagination, experimentation, and care.

Public The design of a community center is focused on the creation of a platform that connects people, nature and different communities. This interaction is encouraged by ground floor pavement the same pavement tiles spread through outdoor and indoor public spaces.

The island consists of many diverse elements that make the place multifunctional. The road is a part of these elements. It makes this public platform easily accessible for everyone and maintains the island busy. The traffic is light here, so the road could be used as an extension for the main square. To highlight that, the road has the same pavement tiles as other public spaces.

Welcome. Everyone is welcome to the Guest House of Archipelago. It’s the place which acts a major role in connecting local community and guests of the town. Hotel as the main funtion here does not exist alone - it is supplemented by joy and chatter of Svencelė people, who eat, drink, work or just relax there. It is the place where people meet each other while getting a quick stop for coffee before work or even during long weekend brunch. The functions blend into daily rituals of the vacationist and supplement the social life of local residents. This hotel pulsates with energy of Svencelė. It is a part of Archipelago community island. Initial concept was to create a hotel type function to invite local and international guests to the village. The aim for this building is to combine hotel room typology with open public spaces in order to encourage the relationship between local people and village guests, let the guests know the village by including them into community activities. It is the perfect way to build new relationship, know local culture and atmosphere. To encourage this social interaction, ground floor level acts as a public platform, offering commercial functions to maintain the vitality of the space. Ground level is open to the main street and by its transparency and disclosure catches people flows. This solution allows people move freely between inside and outside.

Frame work The highlight of the Guest House is its multifunctionality. The building could be used by various users during different periods of the day to support daily rituals and social habits. Moreover, to support this social diversity, apartments with different amentities are designed. They vary from compact rooms for couples, several-room flats for families and luxurious top floor rooms with high pitched roof ceiling. To reduce CO2 emissions during the construction of this multistorey building, the concept for structure is based on creation of natural timber framework. Load bearing structure consists of CLT panels for walls and ceiling, and timber columns, girders and rafters to support all levels including roof. These natural elements ensure the stiffness of the building and could be left exposed in the interior spaces.

Materiality of this particular building is inspired by local construction traditions, found in SvencelÄ— village - timber fishermen homesteads which are found around the Lagoon and red brick buildings dated back from XXth century. Pitched roof is chosen to create a connection with the architectural style which is identified in the whole Seaside region.

The Lighthouse As we approach to Svencelė village in the evening, first thing we notice in the horizon is The Lighthouse - a 25 meters high tower, which marks Archipelago center. The building is unique by its ability to transmit light through its semi transparent envelope, making the building glow in soft light during the dark hours. This tower acts as the main landmark of the village among lowrise houses. It could lead the way not only for drivers, but also for sailors. The Lighthouse is noticable from the lagoon and herewith marks the water entrance to the Marina of Svencelė.

Acting as a vertical dominant, this building is expressed through a unique façade solution – light transmitting envelope from polyester. This façade which is made from light-transmitting materials such as polyester and fiberglass create dual appearance during day and night and acts as an invitation for people to gather around and inside.

The Box

Archipelago

The Box could be easily titled as The Workshop Center. The building concentrates on hosting various public events - sunrise yoga, morning workshops, noon discussions, lunch presentations, dancing lessons, evening films and nightime rave parties. All these and many other events may take place on the ground floor of The Box. This glass enveloped space may be transformed from totally closed into absolutely open and interact with the

environment - people, cars, plants and animals. The boundaries of interior activities may be extended to interact with the landscape and other buildings. Along with the folding windows system, the framework of the building is supplemented by the system of sliding partitions, which gives numerous space configurations and makes the building easy to adapt to diverse scenarios.

The Box consists of three identical floors with the same sliding partition system which follows building’s timber framework geometry. As the ground level is meant to be orientated into hosting diverse public activities and mainly acts as stage for public, two upper floors may occupy more private functions. With the ability to be easily transformable to obtain different space layout, these floors can function as working spaces for small offices or freelancers. As an addition to that, each floor has a small kitchenette. Also, the room could be divided to have both working desks, studios, meeting rooms and rest areas. Thinking more about the possibilities which could be offered by The Box, this house also may act as a part of art residency. The space easily becomes a cluster of individual studios work boxes - dedicated for artists-in-residence. Developing the same idea, the artists could be hosted by Guest House all year around, especially during off-season months. With Guest House and Workshop Center in use, The Lighthouse Gallery comes right in place and supplements all strategy - it becomes the center of public attention and a unique location for site specific art creations. This proves, that buildings supplement each other and support diverse actions for Svencelė.

Play House Movement is a priority in Archipelago community. Usually, it’s the younger generation who fill the space with energy and joy of motion. Therefore, a lifted house - playground park is introduced to the island to provide safe freedom of learning for children, youngsters and other participants of Svencelė.

2

This building may be simply called a daycare center with a public rooftop playground. As daycare function requires privacy and safety, the volume is lifted. The space under it has become a part of a green public area and integrates into the movement scheme between adjacent buildings. Even the main daycare functions - excercise spaces, kitchenette, meeting rooms, etc - are lifted, the building is accessible from the ground floor level, where the waiting lobby and administration premises are placed. Moreover, glass atrium is placed in the center and has an exit to outdoor terrace and stairs.

3

The atrium forms movement around - people can move endlesslly inside and on the rooftop. This void becomes irreplacable component of the building - it embraces movement and acts as a connecting element between interior and exterior. It acts both as dividing and communication element – main building spaces are divided by this transparent glass wall but herewith maintain the connection with separate functions and activities. Because of the transparency, people can see each other standing in different parts of the building, enjoy greenery, trees and herewith observe the activities happening around.

In Seaside regions, fish markets have a significant meaning for the community. In many cities, where is a port, there is also a fish market. Svencelė is becoming one of those places, where port and fish market supports each other. It connects people with water and it’s nature and plays a huge role in the identity of the place. In this case, food market is another link to the context.

As already presented functions for guests, youth, events and workshops, the fifth public stage is food market. Fish market idea is supplemented with thoughts about everyday habits and places where people interact with each other almost every day. Thus, a concept for local market and food hub was created. In this way, building fits into local context and support daily needs.

Food Factory A structure with exposed steel construction, steel facade and polycarbon windows fits to a typical industrial hangar descripton. This type of framework supports desired functional zoning offering wide span between columns and illumination of the interior space. The building which basically is concentrated on food industry provides a platform where people they can have a meal, buy daily groceries from local farmers, sell their own goods and use wide space for various village events (for example, food fair). Thus, the building is based not only for consumerism – it supports local economy by providing a place to sell and exchange ideas, meet friends and new people, maintain annual traditions and many other positive things.

It is important to mention that the building has the same ground floor opening function as other buildings – sliding doors, which could extend the room for activities and encourage free movement around all island. Despite that, market has also a wooden deck which welcomes interior activities to outdoor. The deck has stairs, which leads to lower part deck. The lower deck is accessible for boats and becomes another platform of opportunities which supplement market function. The concept of creating lower platform is based on idea to use it as a fish selling point, where fishermen come straight from the lagoon with fresh goods from Baltic Sea and lagoon and sell them fresh to local people.

Talking more about Food Factory, the main open space consists of main entrance hall and eating hall in between two food stations. The stations, situated among various types of seating may hold up to 4 different food or beverages selling points. These steel structures are designed to function as small open kitchens which are easily accessed for the users. Other additional premises for dish washing, storage and other utilities are situated in the back and has separate entrance.
