A Jamaican poets dream is to have her work published and we at Streetcred are happy to share some of her work with you. Inspired by her mentor, Louise Bennet, they were both born in Kingston, Jamaica. Laurel has been studying criminology at University for the last five years and has been in England since 1985 working with underprivileged children. Original huh? A Producer has claimed that Gaga’s new song is a copy of a song he created for a South Korean Girlgroup. The Producer states that the track has similar traits to his song ‘Be Happy’ and he is contacting Gaga’s people and lawyers to file a lawsuit against her. If anyone should be filing a lawsuit against Gaga it should definitely be Madonna, the song sounds exactly like ‘Express Yourself ’ with a few added synths. In other Gaga news, Gaga has said that she tried to “F*ck herself up” for artistic purposes. Like her Idols, Mick Jagger, David Bowie and Andy Warhol, Gaga believes that f*cking herself up will add to her creativity. I suspect f*cking herself up recently has meant copying ‘Express Yourself ’. Gaga also said that before she got famous she used to live in an apartment that had ‘cocaine everywhere.’ I’m really worried now because when I went to Gaga’s apartment, I asked for 2 sugars in my cup of tea. Hmmm, what can we say about Ne-yo’s concert? Well he has definitely come a long way from being just a songwriter for stars such as Beyonce and even the late Michael Jackson wanted to work with him. This show had the props, lighting, amazing visuals, backing dancers that really had the oommph. Ne-Yo rocked it, performing all the hits you know such as ‘So Sick’, ‘Because Of You’, ‘Beautiful Monster’, ‘Love When Your Mad’ and more. What we never knew is how well Ne-Yo can dance. It was so shocking to see the Usher type showcase. We were expecting a few moves here and there but this was choreography to the highest level and like we said, the dancers, especially the females were hot. A visually jaw dropping show that gives hope for RnB music. We still have the energy that has been missing for so long, although it was a very Usher & Chris Brown it was a good concert all round and we can’t deny that this guy has the hottest songs on the market RIGHT NOW! Looking forward to the next show! Go Ne-Yo Go Ne-Yo.

Joy founded JC Hair in early 2008; however the journey began when Joy was only 14 years of age. Right from this beginning Joy had immense passion and energy for the hair and hair dressing. Did You Know? Virgin hair: This highest quality extension hair has never been processed in any way and is pure. This term covers hair from the continents of the Americas, Europe and Asia. This hair could last for several years if properly cared for and performs extremely well. This hair can be chemically altered to achieve different colours and textures. Remy hair: Remy or remi hair is the complete hair strand and has not been weakened by stripping (removing the cuticle). However, this hair has undergone some form of processing (permed, heat treated or dyed) so it should be treated gently. Once virgin hair receives any such processing short of removing the cuticle, it is referred to as remy. Non-remy hair: Non-remy hair is mostly referred to by its misleading title of ‘100% human hair’. This is the most commonly available hair on the market. The roots and tips of hairs are all mixed up (cuticles in different directions) which causes problems with tangling and matting. This hair is sometimes sold as ‘100% human hair tangle free’. This hair type has been stripped of its cuticle to reduce tangling and matting. Non-remy hair will not last as long as remy hair due to the processing it has received. Synthetic hair: Synthetic hair is made of a wide array of different fibres. Synthetic hair will not last as long as 100% human hair because it tends to tangle and frizz uncontrollably. However, there are exceptions and technology has allowed for types of synthetic hair to minimise these issues Yaki hair: This term is given to hair with a similar texture to afro Caribbean hair. This hair type is a lower grade than 100% human hair as it is often diluted with animal and synthetic hair.

1.Where do you get your fashion sense? If I like it, I will get it. If I think it fits nice, then im happy. But sometime I think what the hell was you thinking. But im sure we all have those ones..lol

8. Favourite food? My favourite food is Avocado and I love big fat prawns. I do like my vegetables, but they have to steamed, hot! but crunchy. Also like Duck and Fish. 9. What don’t you eat and why? I do not eat Cow Foot, or Liver because it tastes nasty. I don’t like cakes, unless it’s a chocolate cake and hate doughnuts. I really hate milk and custard; I don’t do pudding unless it’s a bowl of fruit with ice cream.

I wouldn’t say I’m different to other women, but I am very independent, I don’t like relying on others, I’ll give anything a go, if it benefits me and my and people closest to me, even if im scared. I would also say I listen and im not judgmental. 4. How important is it to study? It’s very important to study. One should always better ones self. Otherwise you’re standing still. What would you like to achieve in the next five years? To be fully qualified in my chosen career path, have my own home, a few holidays a year and still be writing for Street Cred Magazine.

10. What do you like most about being a mother? Being a mother is great because I love to play, I love messing around with my kids and they always come first. Watching them grow up and seeing them change into wonderful children. I think I’m the biggest kid in the house really, and sometimes I get my eldest daughter telling me off. 11. What are your aspirations? To take every opportunity with open arms, to learn and progress in everything I do. I would also love to jump out of a plane once in this life time and bungee jump of a high bridge. Bit of a thrill seeker! 12. What’s the most memorable time in your life? Bringing my two girls safely into the world, and seeing their little faces for the first time.

When did you first start singing? - I started singing when I was in the school choir aged 13, at first it was just a way of getting out of lessons, but I soon realised that I actually enjoyed doing it. When did you realise you could sing? - I guess the first time I actually realised I could sing to some degree was when I decided to sing at the old people's party held at school. Who was the first person who told you that you could sing? - My mum was the first person to tell me that I could sing, but of course that's my mum so I thought she had to say that. Then there were other people who would tell me the same. What things have you done to promote yourself? - I have a YouTube channel where I put up videos of myself singing, it helps me to get the views of others on my singing and sometimes they're kind enough to comment on my appearance and decor! lol What things am you currently doing? - Currently I am studying an Access HE course; when I have completed, I will hopefully go into university this year where I will be studying Midwifery. What are you’re future plans, where do you see you’re self in the next 5 years? - In the next few years in terms of my singing I would like to be able to have found a good and affordable voice coach, who can help me

with certain aspects of my voice, perhaps do a few songs of my own and generally explored my potential. In terms of my studies I want to have successfully completed my course and be a qualified Midwife. Hopefully by then there will still be enough jobs in the NHS! Who do you look up to in terms of singing? - To be fair, I have never really been able to say that there was one person who I really looked up to. With me, if I like a tune and I feel can sing it then I will try. Having said that, when I first started singing the one person's songs I would practice the most were those of Celine Dion. Do you think it’s important to have a back up plan, when you’re a singer like yourself? - Most definitely! No matter how good you are at singing, you should always have a back up plan. Times change so fast there is never any guarantee, there would be nothing worse than realising that not only have you passed your sell by date, but you also have no other skills to be able have a comfortable life. What would you say to the young people out there that are trying to get noticed? What would be a good tip? - I say never give up, if you feel you truly believe you can make it, there is nothing that can stop you, be persistent because nothing happens before its time. I think another thing would be to keep yourself surround by people who love you, you will need them and their support to help you continue during times you feel like throwing the towel in.

The whole concept of Kinect is, that you are the controller. You can kiss goodbye to your controllers, but be prepared to look silly!!!! Playtime! The whole idea of Kinect is that anyone can play. Teedra Moses is one of the most slept-on R&B artists IN THE GAME. From the first time I heard her debut album ‘Complex Simplicity’ on a trip to New York in 2004, I knew I was hooked forever. It’s been over seven years since the Lioness released an official album due to the collapse of her record label TVT Records but her fans worldwide have remained patient and loyal thanks in part to the mixtapes she has put out, most recently in February of 2010: the aptly titled: ‘Royal Patience’ which is a beautiful progression from ‘Complex Simplicity’showing a more brave artist that just keeps improving.

J: What’s your label situation at the moment? T: I am indie right now. (The label that Teedra was initially signed to TVT Records collapsed and went bankrupt in 2008). It’s not that I’ve not had interest from major labels or that I don’t want to sign with a major label but this is a very ‘tap-dancing’ industry and I’m not willing to tap-dance for a label, I’ll tap-dance for the people! It’s the people who demand the artist essentially, not the label. I have a lot of people with me, behind me and supporting me and my music. There’s strength in numbers and I want the labels to see that I’m here, and I’m doing this whether you like it

Jess: Hey Teedra, thank you for talking with us! How are you? How’s life? Teedra: hey girl! It’s my pleasure, I

J: So we’ve just had the release of the ‘R U 4 Real’ official video which features on last year’s Royal Patience mixtape. How has it been received in The States? T: Really well, the hits and the feedback have been good. I wanted to show a development from Complex Simplicity but with a similar vibe. This is just a scratch. I can’t put out the music the way I want to, or as often as I want to and it’s irritating for me. I wanted to give people something to show that I’m still here and still making good music. I love the video, it’s a reflection of where my music is going.

I still plan to release a new mixtape very soon and then get my album out around August. I’m working on feeding the people, the real music lovers with sexy soul music; real singing from a lifestyle artist. J: Will the long-awaited ‘Young Lioness’ get a release? T: The album is complete but the name will change, it will no longer be ‘Young Lioness’, just ‘Lioness’. When I first decided that title I had just released ‘Complex Simplicity’ and I was scared, you know? I’m not scared anymore, and I don’t feel the name is appropriate now. ‘Lioness’ will definitely be released and as I said, we’re aiming for August this year.

J: You mean Jessie J? T: Yeh that’s her! She’s cool! J: I think the reason that so many people have fallen in love with your music is that your lyrics are so REAL and everyone can relate to them, where do you draw your inspiration from? T: I write about whatever I’m feeling in my life. The best artists write about what they know whether it’s through observation or experience. I stick to what it is that I know and just hope that someone else out there is feeling the same.

J: So you’re mother to twin boys (from a previous relationship with rapper RasKas), how do you cope managing being a Mom and an artist? T: The boys are in their early teens now, they love to see how the game goes! They know their job is to get good grades and behave well no matter what I’m doing. I’ve been doing this for nearly ten years, they know the vibe and they know they have to be mature about it, it’s J: I saw your show in London a couple of just me and them and they get that! years ago, you we’re amazing live and I was shocked at how far some UK fans had trav- J: I have to ask because I know all of our male elled to see you perform. Starring the remaining members of one of the UK’s best loved RnB groups, Damage (Coree having left to pursue his own career), Ghetto Romance on New Years Day was a celebration for Noel, being his birthday, and a celebration that Damage are about to resurface on the UK scene. It was like a throwback to the ‘old skool’ with some of the most classic RnB hits ever made being pulled out of the record bag and given a gracious airing to the delight of all. I’d wager you won’t find many DJs in clubs today that would put on a seven inch version of ’Pass the Dutchie’ by Musical Youth and have the entire club ‘boogying down’ to it. Added to this was a mature, music loving crowd who were perfectly happy to throw caution to the wind and risk personal dance reputation for the sake of ‘Candy’ by Cameo. The venue, Eden, right in the heart of trendy Muswell, Hill did a splendid job of hosting the event, the venue having only recently opened (September 2010), it already boasts a series of successful events featuring popular Musical Artists. Most of us have some kind of experience of domestic violence; we may have gone through it by our selves, seen our friend or parents to go through it, or may be in the situation where it has become the only solution to release the stress and put things into a balance. When I am writing this, I am not accusing any one, I just simply bring out the facts. In domestic violent situations everyone is a victim, that does not make it ok to hit or abuse someone, but when we are writing about these issues, we need to remember, that often a person who is acting violently, has learned to act that way and for them, this is the only way they know how to deal with things. I also want to point out that as much as women, also men are the receiving participants in domestic situations. Men just don’t talk about it, because it is something that still is a tabu and hard to admit to the outside world. What Is domestic violence? Years ago when I was doing a research in Poland about domestic violence, I defined the term in the following way:- Every time when someone in the family feels to be threatened in their own home or outside it by the member of the same family, we are talking about domestic violence. The threat could be physical or psychological, but the elements are there to be felt unsafe and unprotected. We may think that the little push around is not violent, but it all depends how the re-

These were thought to have been photo-shopped but either way, our girl was not looking her usual immaculate self. Rihanna eventually broke her silence on the attack with a “Tell All” interview with American TV Host Diane Sawyer. “I fell in love with that person, that’s embarrassing”, Rihanna says about Chris. “I fell in love with my best friend, the more in love we became, the more dangerous we became for each other.” Chris pleaded guilty to assaulting Rihanna and was sentenced to five years probation, six months community service, a two week domestic violence course and he is not allowed to go with fifty yards of Rihanna unless they are attending a music industry event, when it then becomes ten yards. With the support of her family, friends and fans Rihanna was eventually back out there and has been linked to the likes of Drake and is now dating Baseball Player Matt Kemp. “I have a boyfriend, I’m so happy. I feel really comfortable, and it’s so easy. I have such a chaotic life, but at the end of the day, that is just my peace. MDG: How you feeling man? Trey Songz: I’m feelin good man, just working. MDG: You are definitely putting in the work, I haven’t seen this craze for a long time in RnB where girls are actually fainting at your shows. How is it that you have this magic touch over your fans? Trey: It was a great show! Birmingham was amazing, the after party at Gatecrasher was phenomenal. The energy there was just amazing, I’ve always loved Birmingham man. MDG: I swear I haven’t seen that kind of response to an artist since Jodeci times. The feeling you bring to the game is that Old skool R Kelly Usher era… Trey: Everything from the interaction, the show you’ve seen yourself how much involved the crowd is and how I try to create that connection. It’s all about that bond and I do everything I possibly can to connect with my fans. I really go in from the Twitters to YouTube the Facebook. I think its really important because at the end of the day the fans are a part of my life. We have a bond between us that is unbreakable.

MDG: You’re a mega RnB star and I can see you becoming a legend especially with the way things are going and I have to say that your writing is phenomenal. How are you finding being so big with all this female attention and being single? Trey: Sometimes it’s a lot to deal with and sometimes I love it to death and sometimes you wish you had a girl to go through it all with, but sometimes you know that you can’t have it all right now because that takes a lot of your time because I am actually sharing myself with the world and she would have to understand that, but overall its definitely a blessing. It’s like I tell you, right now I’m touring with Usher for the first time and I’m walking around thinking not many people know me so I’m going shopping. It starts off I take a couple pictures and then there’s one café where I’m hanging out and then hundreds of girls start crowding the place so it’s a reality check sometimes. I have to know what I’m doing but its such a blessing to be loved. MDG: Bro, you are known all over the world so when you do this tour you better be ready ha ha. [Both laugh] MDG: What type of lady does it for you? Trey: I like Keri Hilson but nothing is going on there. MDG: Hmmm, tell me the names you’ve worked with on this journey? Trey: Aretha Franklin, Fabolous, Gerald Lavert, Patti Labelle, Rick Ross, Jim Jones. I’ve been blessed to work with a lotta people you know, Busta Rhymes and Snoop Dogg too. MDG: So basically you’ve put in the work? Trey: Definitely. MDG: A lot of people think you’ve just come all of a sudden and that you haven’t been in the game that long to get your rewards. Can you tell me a bit about the history? Trey: I’ve been putting out albums from like 17. Starred minor roles in a couple of movies, just really doing my thing. There is a lot similar ways I have to R Kelly, I mean I was pretty much influenced by him and furthermore there is nobody else doing real RnB music. MDG: What was your beef with R Kelly? Trey: Iv’e been a fan as you know but just didn’t feel that he

was connecting today at all and I said it openly that he is like an old man trying to keep current when he doesn’t need to. Its just a disappointment from such a phenomenal artist. MDG: Are you gonna keep to RnB or will you be diverse? Trey: I’ll always be diverse and I will always be RnB. Even though I am the most prolific RnB artist right now as far as commercial success, but I think its cool to make different kinds of music and I think its important as RnB Singers this is all of us , myself to Usher, Chris Brown and Ne-Yo we are responsible for keeping the RnB alive. Ya know I mean with ‘Bottoms up’ featuring Nicki Minaj that is clearly Hip Hop but at the same time you don’t wanna be boring and predictable it’s good to be diverse and have freedom in the music. MDG: I can see you are diverse though I mean at the concert when you dropped Kings of Leon that was unexpected and you did a good job of a massive rock song. Trey: I actually listen to a lot of Kings Of Leon. I listened to a lot of Sting coming up as I’m so into different types of music you wouldn’t believe and I just love the opportunity to open minds. MDG: You ever listen to Bashment? You know like Vybz Kartel? Are you aware of him? Trey: I’m aware that he likes to talk about what he like to talk. It’s very raw and honest and I love that and it brings me back to what I said about freedom, you have to have that in music and that Reggae is an art form where artists can be free to express. Its expanding man, I mean as much as some people think that music is dying although its not what it used to be, its still growing and I think we will see phenomenon in music again in these times. I mean you have artists like Adele that bring hope to music and she’s so not typical and I love that. There is just so many different cultures creating great music right now and it can only live. MDG: I notice you care very much about your community in the states. Trey: Most recently I did something with BET where we went to schools and spoke to the children. It’s different to when your teacher tells you something is wrong but when it comes from a person they look up to they will listen more and its just amazing that so many different

people take heed to what I say, so that for me shows I’m doing my job. If I can influence kids to stay in school and show the importance of education, I’m happy I’m reaching. These are the children that are giving me my blessings and it’s important I let them know that and give back. MDG: What’s the craziest thing you’ve experienced from meeting your fans? Trey: Definitely been a lot of panties on stage. One time actually in Birmingham O2, my first time performing, there was like 20 pairs on stage ha ha. My fans make me who I am and it’s important I let them know what they mean to me. Any chance I get I like to make sure they know that.

47 On March 21st I shut up shop early at work to head down to Artistic Souls at Bluu Bar, Summer row. The first one through the doors I settled down at the bar whilst waiting for my girl Latoya from TheWayForward to join me for an evening of poetic licence and lyrical talent. After some general chitchat and a glass of wine I revealed to her my real intentions for asking her to accompany me to the event; I was performing! Yes that’s right, poetry book in toe I was among one of the many poets to perform on the night. With talent travelling in from as far as London I was taken aback at the high standard of artistry displayed on the night. With topics such as love, politics, religion and war skillfully placed into wordplay I was left with more than enough food for thought. Then came my turn (which seemed to come way to quick I should add) to grace the floor, to which I performed a poem about (yep, you guessed it) Love! To my delight, it went down pretty well and in the interval all the performers flocked to take pictures with the mastermind behind this fantastic night Andre Soul. If you’re a poet, singer or rapper and want to share your material with a cultural crowd then this is the event for you. Equally, if you fancy a chilled one with friends under some dimmed lighting and in a room full of lyrical imagination then I recommend this one for you too. Met by a bustling mature crowd all dressed up and ready for a laugh I was ushered into the auditorium in time for the performance of Llewella Gideon’s one woman show ‘Little Big Woman’ to begin. The lights dimmed and the show opened with a witty introductory sketch from Llewella’s main character Cynthia; A Forty-something young minded woman taking the audience through her daily routine in work, life and with some of the people she comes across on the way. As the show unravelled, the audience were treated to three more characters including my personal favourite Hortense Pretentious whom most of you may remember from Llewella’s portrayal of her in BBC’s The Real McCoy. After a belly full of laughs in the first hour, the performance broke for the audience to be treated to some lovely Caribbean food downstairs in the foyer (for which I was first in the cue) before we were ushered back into the auditorium for another dose of giggles.

ABOUT SKOOL WITH CELEBRITY DJ’S Noodles: I went to one of the greatest schools ever in Birmingham and that’s Jaffray. In my year, I had Danny D, Ganzi myself, Dj Hazard and Mark Dwayne. Anybody that wanted to do something constructive made a name after. We was a school of sound boys. Jaffray gave kids the freedom to be kids, turn up with tie and jeans and I member my brother come with a high top all looking like Wesley Snipes and never got sent home lol Ganzi was in the biggest sound system in Aston called young Taurus he was the man and I use to look up to him. in a way he played a part in where I am now. if I never mentioned him in this interview I be lying, anybody in the mid 90s as a youth coming up there was two main dj’s, Tyrone Melody and Ganzi. They were the captains of sounds. Anybody that doesn’t mention their names as history coming from the 90’s ya lying. MDG: What made you fall in love with music? Noodles: The first time it clicked with me was one Christmas ages ago when we was young and my brother got a public enemy cd of Lady T. Me mark GT used to do our own radio shows when we was young with two cassettes and we was 12. Get one stereo record it and then talk like were on radio and listen back to it. ABOUT PIRATE RADIO MDG: What was your First pirate station to play on? Noodles: Sting FM was having a conversation and Danny my bredrin was like right now no one aint doing nothing for Danny D and Noodles and the management said don’t worry im doing a radio and soon as I get it up I get you on. We got the phone call and Sting FM was

born. Then we started doing the show from every week and that’s when it all kicked off. You had sounds like Body Fusion and Seduction who I worked with. MDG: You know who you are now musically in my opinion it’s like you have adapted all what you’re about in one sound? You’re the real you NOW? Noodles: I play the real hip hop tunes that gets the response from people saying ‘oh my gosh I member that. I drop things that is a memory to me and because I been around so long, I member certain songs and what buzz it had so that’s the advantage I have over certain djs MDG: Was there a vision or did you just love it? Noodles: Both but yes I had a vision being a dj no matter what. It was Sound bwoy orientated. My mission was getting my name on dub plate and to battle sound systems and playing abroad. Every sound I loved I got the opportunity to clash them except Saxon which is on the cards. On Ghetto Fame MDG: What’s an amazing memory that sticks out in your career? Noodles: One day it was me and Pac jam in town centre, Pac jam just had his hair blonded and soon as we walked passed c and a I heard the bus window go BAM BAM and girls were screaming Pac jam. They wasn’t screaming me but im thinking no way, look at the effect of the movement we doing. it happened to my friend but then I was thinking yeh we in the same circle. MDG: Get nervous doing raves? Noodles: Nervous, i’m nervous now guaranteed anywhere I play half an hour before my set I say, how did I get myself in this situation? I look at Tropical and say how did I get myself in this situation and they say what you mean? That’s just my nerves kicking in and then I go tunnel and once that happens I go in. Great artists have nerves you don’t have nerves you don’t love it. No matter what you have in life you could be the no 1 gyalist or criminal but before you do that task you think to yourself what am I doing here? If there’s a girl you wanted to mash all yer life and before you do it you say what am I doing here? Ha then you go back to work MDG: Where did you love playing that you miss? Noodles: Summerfield days, those times playing for Sammy jegga a big promoter back then. It was immortal Addis, Babyface those days we flattened the rave. MDG: You still get the same excitement like from back in the day when you played before? Noodles: Yes all depends how im feeling but if I wanna play I will mash up the dance MDG: What is the reason people are not feeling the same vibe as before you think? Noodles: Whats happened to parties you either go and people think it’s a fashion show or it’s a moodi fest or its just drunk fest. The best party you could ever go to is a party in yer own yard then you get the true essence of a party. People get drunk and have a good time, not just couse were old but I can member we could go out as a kid at the Carnival and do the bogul dance and man would go behind a gyal and do the dance with her. now? there is no interaction. Technology has messed up the whole industry. Back in the day being a dj was time and effort as we had to buy our tunes from summit virgin or Don Christies JD Dreddie. You had your route of shops we used to go too. I also went to Sword fish for my records. I would put my tunes I wanted right at the back of the indie pile so I know in five days when I come back it be there lol I used to always do it. Was a mission to hunt for a tune those days now all you gotta do is download MDG: Do you like downloading? Noodles: POW came out on white label only 30 copies. Those were the days where only 5 in Birmingham you get yer hands on. Now all everyone has to do is say pow 2011 on youtube convert it loll it’s just not the same as before because those times when you had a record you was the man. MDG: What’s your thoughts on urban music being commercialised? Noodles: I don’t get why people are playing NDubz in clubs, not good because they are pop tunes not club tunes. You wouldn’t play ‘when will I be famous’ back in the day no! Let’s get real, why is everybody going on with top of the pops in dances? Dances these days are killing it. How geezers are dressing like rock STARS in the seventies. Bob Marley be spinning in his grave if he saw how it is now. Why do people want to see 14-18 stone man jumping on gyal and pushing girls out the way lol don’t make sence . If I was to play Ndubz I’d have to link them up and say here what... I love what your doing but can you give me a special on this beat and when I play it your gonna stand up and say this is why we call him MVP Most Valuable Player. I train twice a week on my decks. I get my decks and play my music scratch. Any dj saying they don’t practice they are nutters because Tyson cant just say im gonna bus his ass without training, you gotta run the miles and sweat. The greatest way to a persons soul is via music so I don’t play certain Nicky minarj or Vybz and people will say why and I say cus they taking the piss. They blatantly doin it in front of my face ‘ooh na na’ I don’t want my kids on that and shouting ‘oh na n’a when that’s devil talk if you research it. You have to have morals if you don’t you die for anything MDG: Great times was UK cup clash how was that? Noodles: Mighty crown, imagine I know what the sound can do. I member going to the no swearing round. This is what I said, it looks like its Bass Odyssey and us and I didn’t care if I win or lose. That was a great time clashing the best. At that point I achieved my dream, I member clashing Xtac and in the first two rounds they was whooping us and then the third round we smashed them up. We nearly lost and it could have been bad for Immortal because X Tac really went for the kill. MDG: Where have you played abroad? Noodles: Jamaica, Germany, Belgium and Finland. I am internationally known. MDG: You left immortal Sting FM and Champions at the same time. Why when all is going well? Noodles: I left Sting and Champions at the same time. Someone came to me and said have you made your dreams come true? And I was like yeh and they says well make some new ones. So basically I manned up and made some new dreams. I have to say. When I left no one wouldn’t book me until you and I will say this there be no chapter 3 without Nutcracker and Mark Dwayne. Nutcracker and yourself booked me and from there it has been a new vibe and we are known to smash room 2 at the venues. I love this new chapter and I don’t think about recession. I always been init lol I was born black single parent three kids its nothing new I just get on with it MDG: What is your new dream? Noodles: Tours with Infamouz around the world MDG: Who do you rate and thank for your journey? Vybz Kartel As you all know this man is not easy to get hold of and is extremely hot property, being the No. 1 artist in Jamaica right now and making waves all over the world. This artist is the most controversial and, we can safely say, the biggest dancehall star today. No one can deny the remarkable lyrical skills of Vybz Kartel, the energy he has brought to the dancehall scene is unbelievable and he has everyone waiting on his next move. This is an interview he personally wanted to do as he said he is a StreetCred artist and he wanted to set records straight about a few things. We talk about his ban from the UK, skin bleaching, family life and how he wants to see young black youth rise with their talent. Jamaica means a lot to Vybz Kartel and he really wants Dancehall to be a force to be reckoned with and he is not holding back the lyrics. What is proved about VK is that whatever he does people in Jamaica back him even, with his face going white like Michael Jackson.

I was actually surprised he stopped his studio session to talk to me. Whether you like him or not, his music will get you skanking

MDG: Man, how do you come up with so many songs it’s like I know you’re in studio now, music is your life I’m hearing that ya bussing like 15 tunes a week is this true? And how do you get the inspiration? Kartel: Inspiration is just from life. There is so many complications right now and I am the one who goes into that and explains the situation in music. Whatever I write and sing about is real life, that is Vybz Kartel

Kartel: I think its just society you know, they always try to keep people down that are powerful. I am just a voice of the Jamaican society and they go at me but I am just Vybz Kartel and they cant stop what people really want to hear. It’s always gonna be a fight when you rise from the ghetto, as people we will always have a fight . MDG: You worked with Eminem. How was that for you? Kartel: Eminem is one of the greatest artists of all time in this generation. It’s really amazing to see a white man in a prodiminently black art form and dominating the scene. Originally it was meant to be someone else on that riddim, but Eminem did hear the track on the internet and wanted to jump on the tune with me and I was surprised at that and the rest as they say is history. MDG: Kartel is a controversial artist, people perceive you as the gangster and many negative things ever since the day when you hit Ninja Man on stage at Sunfest. Why did you do that? I’ve always wanted to know Kartel: It was an unfortunate incident and at the time man I was very immature. I was just out of character, but it was definitely a young man that did that and as I look back I regret it. MDG: Vybz Kartel is Business man? Kartel: Yes I have a drink and its selling more than water right now. MDG: Serious? Kartel: Serious. Kartel: Yes there are many branches to Vybz Kartel. I have my own clothing line and shoes out because many people see my style as a way of life. I am just upgrading and excelling the brand and giving people what they want and representing Jamaica to the highest degree. My shoes will be a variety of colours. That’s why I do this interview cuz its Streetcred and I am StreetCred so I have to represent that MDG: Trust me, trust me big up.

MDG: The fans are hurt that you can’t come UK man. Kartel: No no keep ya fingers crossed I don’t wanna say much and build anybody’s hopes but I probably in UK by end of year. MDG: You are running the Bashment scene right now and definitely the voice of today how do you relate with the people so much? Kartel: I basically put it down to being my time now. I mean it has been along time coming, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer are of then and I am of now. It’s like what Bob Marley said was relevant at the time when he did. I am relevant of this time so its just a timing thing and everybody likes what I represent and I just want to say to the young people hard work is the key to success, dedication is the key no matter how cliché that sounds. Gaza me seh! MDG: You know the media do give you a hard time and don’t support the positive side of Kartel and that is what our readers must see is that there is a conscious Kartel, a family man and hard worker. [Ramping Shop’ broke Vybz into the mainstream featuring his long time frend spice who he grew up with in Portmore Jamaica.] MDG: We all want to know about the whole bleaching situation. its quite clear that you have gone from black to a lighter skin colour and you have even made mention of it in your music for instance ‘Me Michael Cake soap Jackson’ it shows your not really bothered about what people think but the readers really want to know why you lightened your skin colour? Vybz has released his own Cake Soap that is selling like mad in Jamaica. For the first time skin bleaching is endorsed by a Jamaican celebrity. Kartel: Vybz Kartel is an entertainer, a controversial artist if somebody want to take it personal that is their problem not mine. I am an entertainer and I get paid to entertain. I am just me and if anyone has a problem with it then that’s their problem done simple. There is no complaints about white people who want to tan but they want to run Vybz Kartel.

MDG: So many tunes I can’t even name them all mashing up the place, ‘Dumpa Truck’, ‘Clarks’, ‘Virginity’. Every one of your tunes smashes a rave and to be honest a whole night could be Kartel and people would be happy with that. How do you do so many tunes and know they are going to buss so easily and what is your favourite song?

MDG: End of the day you have to live for yourself cant be living to please everyone?

Kartel: That is a very difficult question ya know it’s like me saying which one of my kids is my favourite but I can’t.

MDG: Tell me about your humble beginnings.

MDG: So you have children then? A family man. How do you separate your career and family life? Kartel: I have 7 kids. 2 in Jamaica 5 in Cana-

da. It’s not that hard to separate the two because I don’t live with any of them. I do my career and when I spend time with them I spend time with them.

MDG: You are a wicked song writer and absolutely killing the dancehalls with your lyrics. Why do you think you’ve been banned from the UK?

Kartel: Exactly, that’s what I say. MDG: Who are great artists in your opinion? Kartel: Jay Z is a great artist; Eminem is a great artist, Vybes Kartel is a great artist.

Kartel: A long time I been doing ghetto music in Portmore but what Vybz Kartel had over other artists when breaking through I had whole leap of people to help my skills to perfect my craft and I was known in Kingston by everybody so wasn’t that hard for me to buss. When I come to Kingston it was to be introduced to Bounty Killer. I

was underground in Portmore but when I went to Kingston to meet Bounty Killer that’s when I started to do this professionally. As you know I wrote Bounty Killer songs but I left the alliance in 2007 and came into my own. Building my own Empire record label and so on, empire have Popcaarn, Lisa Hype, Avalanche, Kartel the Emperor. MDG: Many young artists try to be a Vybz Kartel. Do you advise the major record deal or for them to go the independent route? Kartel: Sometimes independent is good, distributing mixtapes give them for free and even the established artists give away their music it is whatever works and you do what you have to do to get dere. MDG: Where do you see Vybes in three years? Kartel: Writing a book on myself and doing films. So you can see me in a film and production company and doing things for myself. MDG: Thanks for the good work, looking forward to seeing Dancehall music taken to the heighest heights. Kartel: Awoh!

I want to be invested in either you back me cause you know I’m going to be a hit or forget it because I’m not going to be moulded into the next Rihanna or Nicky Minarj. When you see the certain females there is a certain way they make you .Not saying I don’t dress sexy but there’s a limit and my music is what I want people to by into. So I’m not havin a boob job I like my ass im not losing weight that’s what it is!!! MDG: You enjoying the journey? SIC NIS: This is the best bit of course I love meeting people on the way and even admired you as a name from brum you know I used to be that young girl that went to the streetcred parties and won miss streetcred lol I love the whole journey seeing you was inspiring couse you didn’t care you said this is what you love and went for it. [Mark gets embarrassed on compliments] MDG: What is Major the producer to you? SIC NIS Major is like Motown slash aftermath Badboy all in one from Birmingham Hockley the studio I go too. Everybody who’s anybody who rolls through. They have started a big thing called Saliva Ville which has a catalogue of artists and are shopping around deals so far loads of interest in the states for our music. MDG: What’s a good memorable performance for you? SIC NIS: I was in a play at the drum called a Caribbean Christmas which was 6 nights. I played a Jamaican with a pink weave, it was our take on the Christmas story where Jesus got kidnapped . MDG: So ultimately what are you about? SIC NIS: I’m about social awareness because people are walking round with their eyes wide shut. We got kids, if I got a child my family got a child, my friends got a child an so on so you have to represent and the way things are going now its absolutely disgusting. If I can change just one persons mindset about how bad they are, my job is done. I just want to convince certain people to wake the hell up and see what’s in front of you then I know I have reached and that person will pass on the knowledge . MDG: Which celebs have you cut? Kingie: Dwight Yorke, Germaine Pennant, Richard Blackwood, Frank Bruno so many. I just want to set the trend as barbers is a big thing and doesnt have to be underground. It’s a way of life and I want it to reach high levels, a lot of barbers bring it down. MDG: You also used to DJ Kingie: I used to DJ with Pappa San and do PCRL, Real radio and nuff promotion but now I have found my place. MDG: I remember doing the barbershop video here for my song. Kingie: Yes that did do big and all my kids got to know me through that video.

One of the reggae world’s biggest stars is touring in America at the moment. His tour started in February and will last till April. I managed to catch the man of the moment on the telephone on his way to studio to do some material to his new upcoming album Kingston 11 and I must say, conversation with Mykal is just easy, it’s all about chilling on the moment and good things. Mykals singing career carries on a legacy of his family and furthermore, his brother. “When I was a little boy, my brothers used to sing a lot. They weren’t famous or anything, but that’s how I got the vibes. Unfortunately one of my brothers had an accident and he died. I wanted to carry on singing to keep his legacy alive. I started out in talent shows, and I was discovered by Niney. He brought me to studio and we recorded some songs. This all happened in 70’s, times have changed a lot.” Soon after of the discovery of his talent, Mykal joined to Black Uhuru, which led him to international success. 1985 the album ‘Anthem’ gained a Grammy award for reggae music. During the

years, Mykal has made many successful albums. Some of his most famous works are The Saga ( 2007) and Babylon 9/11 (2004). In November 2010 Mykal, Cham and Bounty Killer released a single called ‘Stronger’. It is a song about inner power, which everyone should have, power to fight against the un-justice of the world. “Stronger was born in a charity concert for Africa. Cham wanted to do a song. It came from a need to lift people. I think it’s important to give back to the community, with all the things that are happening in the world. Charity is important and I want people to open their eyes. People need encouragement in their lives. The old saying it takes a village to bring up the child is true. The video is not done yet, but we are working on it. When we released the song, it went number 1 in Jamaica and is still topping lists all over the world.” Today Mykal is touring in USA and also finishing his new album Kingston11. New upcoming album is a big secret. I had a little peak to the album, and when Mykal played a song from the album to me over the phone; nice flowing reggae was playing in the back ground, definitely something any reggae fan wants to add into their collection. “ Kingston 11 will have 16 – 17 songs. I want everyone to tell that they are

ready for the album. It’s going to be a BIG surprise who will be in the album. Album is nearly finished and published soon. This is what you people want! “ The ongoing tour in USA - Mykals tour is all about humanity and reaching people. The purpose of the tour is to open people’s eyes to what is going on in the world. He talks on behalf of those who are not so fortunate, and defends those who will not get bigged up. This tour is all about heart and music. Fame is a secondary thing. “I wanted to call the tour Homeless to open people’s eyes. Wealthy people are arranging the tour and the benefits from it go to Jamaica. You need to reach your hands to the world.” We are certainly looking forward the new album and projects that are related to it. This album is going to be big! He has also seen how the business has changed during the years from the hard core disco scene to the clubs we have today. “At the old times, dj’ing was a lot to do with spending time with your family, hanging around in clubs, because that’s where your family and friends were, and that’s where they worked too. It was much more about love of the music and enjoyment.” “The industry has changed, much more money orientated. Now it’s all about laptops and mixing can be done in the computer. It’s good to know about music, but you don’t really have to.” During his career, Cassy has worked with lots of top artists of today. He has been in the reggae scene as well as in R&B. “The most memorable moments would have to be park dances. It was all free entry, there

were people selling things; chicken, whistles, or whatever they could think of. It was more relaxed and fun, now those parties are more militant, but it’s understandable when thinking of what is going on in the streets.” So, I wanted to know what advice would Cassy give to anyone starting now, he replied: “Now a days you have to work with what you got and put yourself out there much more. Selling is the key word, because there is so much competition out there.” In the future, Cassy is planning to move on to producing and releasing some tracks. So Sir Cassy, we will be waiting in excitement what will be your next move!

62 Every so often something big happens in our city and when it does it creates a stir. We all know about the controversial experience we had when Birmingham decided to release its first ghetto movie , 1 Day that hit cinemas nationwide and was banned to view in our city. How crazy is that? We finally get a movie of our own but not able to go to the cinema to enjoy it because police feared that it would cause violence in the community. Quite sad, but when Notorious BIG film was released they let it go ahead but with metal detectors at the gate. Can you believe that the system sees the community as animals? Nevertheless, Birmingham’s ‘1 Day’ movie was a huge success selling DVDS worldwide and was aired on Channel 4 last year and has been a major platform for this young beautiful talented artist who is a definite positive role model and easy going intellectual.

Here we have Justice Hotep who has ran her own recording studio since the tender age of 16 living her dream and helping others to achieve along the way. This lady is so positive and brings a cool feeling when you are around her. The MC, Poetic Actress and Womens Activist has been a positive movement from a very young age and many know her as one of the main rolls in the 1 Day movie where she had a lot of input in the directing and the soundtrack. ‘Mars and Venus’ was her song featuring Lady Leshurr. It is my absolute pleasure to have this exclusive interview with the young lady that has achieved international status as an extremely talented MC and Moviestar. The success Justice has achieved is so well deserved. A true example of how you can make it if you really want doing it independently. MDG: So it all started when? Justice: When I was 6 or 7 I started writing songs and I grew up in church so I was always into gospel music. I started kind of rapping in the church and I remember my uncle brought a stereo and I tuned into what was then Choice FM and I heard tunes like Nas and Lauryn Hill. I was like wow, this is the one. When I was 15, Cipher of Moorish Delta took me to Goldmine studios and we were so nervous. I came with the name Justice and it stuck because I am a conscious rapper. I’ve always been a pro black person, I’m not racist, just really love my people. I studied my black history I went to Atlanta with the church I was with and that really inspired me to be a black entrepreneur. I had to see black people being successful to make me believe in myself more and Atlanta really opened my eyes. When I came back, I finished college I started doing music production and got my qualification aswell as performing with different people.

“BIRMINGHAM MOVIE STAR MDG: So you’re from Church background did that have an influence on you being conscious in your music? Justice: I’m a spiritual person but I am not a Christian. I don’t believe in any religion. It’s always been in me where I feel I have something to say and I have a responsibility as an artist I know there is a lot more I can give to the world and I am very determined. MDG: So Justice has Purpose? Justice: Justice Hotep means peace in Egyptian. My production line is Hotep productions and ive had this for eight years I had my first studio when I was 16. MDG: Wow! You surely are not The Role in real life you were playing in the movie? Justice: Yes some people don’t understand, I am really a single independent women doing my thing. I am so different off-screen and it was a role I was playing. I love when they ask me and I tell them what I am really about. I run a studio I produce write poetry workshops for struggling mothers and so on. MDG You have a massive influence on the kids I see how important is it to you that you reach them? Justice: You have allsorts of kids that come into my studio and I just want to show them that when you see that it happens around you then you can achieve. I hear people’s stories and although I am not in their situation I truly feel what they are going through and I feel I have something to offer, We need to realise that music is a powerful tool and it can reach everyone. I have performed in Berlin and Spain and the language they understood was my music. MDG: Why do you have such a passion to represent the females?? JUSTICE: Being a strong woman is something I have always tried to promote in my music. The reason I wanted to do it was because I didn’t like how women were portrayed in videos, there should be an option the girls should have a choice its only fair. its about being a black entrepreneur and you have to see it to believe it. we need to show them and put in the footwork. I’m a strong believer that visualization is the key to life. Our imagination is so powerful and it can turn to reality. just how you apply yourself to passing that driving test is the same you have to do in order to have a career. Got to keep believing and then you are achieving. MDG: So are you against the videos with women dressing a bit sexual? Justice: Not everybody wants to hear filth that they can’t play round their kids not saying to stop that image and music just please have the other option. I’m not saying you can’t be relevant go and cuss on yer record or be aggressive whatever but i’m a believer in balance. How you going to

Justice: I seen a lot of friends go through domestic violence and i’m just a single independent women doing my thing and I have something to offer. This music is me I love it so I doing it. MDG: How did it feel going to the cinema to watch a movie you starred in? Justice: It was very exciting I watched a few times and I judged the performance as a viewer and seeing how others reacted gave me more of a good feeling MDG: How much input did you have in the 1Day movie? Justice: We all had a lot of input, they were looking for rappers to be in the film and I said that definitely can work and I bought the mars track to the table I released that tune 6 years ago on 1xtra and today its just getting known. I rapped it to the 1 day crew and they loved it and said we defo want to use it and it was an honour to have a film come out with my involvement I loved how they gave us the freedom to do what we wanted in the role. MDG: Your own studio, you’ve toured and performed with Busta Rhymes and many hip hop stars in Germany what is next? Sl 2007, the year a music genre from Sheffield called Bassline took the clubbing scene by storm. A warpy edgy dance sound championed by a young Jamie Duggan, Shaun Banger Scott and Nev Wright who became national Dj brands and signed to Ministry Of Sound. These boys started a sexy scene full of ladies and glamour in a club called Niche in Sheffield which was a major platform for many DJs and MC’s in the Bassline genre. T2 and Jodie Ayesha had a Number 1 hit called ‘Heartbroken’, DJ Q with ‘You Wot’, HTwo O ‘Whats It Gonna Be’ and others to name but a few have blown up to be big stars of this incredible dance genre that didn’t need London support for it to blow. Bassline was a movement that was Sheffield owned and the Midlands took to the sound which became the UK’s most cutting edge dance scene and a platform for MC’s outside of london. There is one kid that has shined from this beautiful platform and that was a 17 year old from Birmingham named Slick Don blazing the charts with singles ‘Oh Yess’ and ‘I wanna take a Bum Browning home’. These hype tracks sent the raves into a frenzy when played, something like the reaction that Lethal Bizzle ‘Pow’ would get. People go absolutely nuts when a Slick Don track gets played! There are not many Mc’s in the country at 19 years old that can say they have smashed raves all over the country since they were 17, featured on top Ministry Of Sound compilations, have their own top selling T Shirt and put on their own raves. Shine on glossy videos with champion producer TS7 and Specks. This is a hot boy of the rave scene and even Tim Westwood spotted the work and put him on his crib show. Slick Don, you may know as the bassline artist but he wants you to see him as just an artist who does his thing. This kid has been the headline of hundreds of raves in the country and play listed on DJ Q, Target and Cameo’s shows on 1xtra. We talk to the kid that has created a massive movement independently. The Police shutting down bassline raves and we ask if it will ever be as big as it was in 2008 where it was running the Midlands club scene but has taken a huge dip in popularity. The young man, the most established Grime Bassline kid, speaks of his music career and the frustration of people who hate him.

MDG:You’re an established Bassline rave artist probably the most booked could you see yourself doing another type of genre? Slick Don: I don’t try and box myself into one genre I see my self as more of an artist than a genre but my heart is bassline grime has my heart too’, MDG: I first heard of you through myspace pushing your music hard to everyone and then I saw you headlining raves I was like this kid is going in. Slick Don: Started when I was 14 I just used to get beats of the internet and freestyle onit and that’s how I would get recognised.

MDG: When did you make the big break on the rave scene? Slick Don: When I was 16 with ‘Oh Yess’ but my first bassline tune was Rude boy that I done with witty boy so props to him for that. it weren’t for him I couldn’t be here today because he was responsible for the beginning stages of Slick Don. Obviously I say Bassboy he made the beat for ‘oh yess’ but I put a lot of my success to myself. Love working with Bassboy because he is a friend and its more than business so I can get a good vibe and the music will come out good because of that. Toddla T and his vibe is sick. MDG: What do you think keeps your name on everyone’s lips in the Bassline scene? Slick Don: As an artist even up till now I try to focus on longevity and dedication without that you won’t last a minute. So all those flyers I was on the raves and pas that was down to that and the hard work I put on. The scenes are always changing even though there was nuff bassline raves it doesn’t change anything I have come through as artist. MDG: You headline all of these raves even put on your own sell out parties attracting screaming females from all over the country hasn’t that been overwhelming? Slick Don: Its just a party life [laughs] as a young person I love it but I have to stay focused. ya know sometimes I be out clubbing for a whole week straight and going after parties it can become a bit much and I have to remember I’m an artist and need to get my music done. MDG: Why isn’t your brand just jam a full on bassline rave? Slick Don: When I did just jam I wasn’t thinking of a rave perspective I was more business minded. At the time I started my rave which was 2010 I looked at the scene, bashment and rnb was the main thing but I just had to mix it up because I could see a bassline rave couldn’t fill out a club in brum.

lick MDG: What was it like being on Westwood? Slick Don: I been listening to Westwood since I was 5 so to be on his set was overwhelming and definitely big him up for a good break. Also being on 1xtra showing love. Big up to target cameo dj q, I been on a few Ministry of sound cd’s all of this has helped my career.

MDG: So you have a new album coming right? Slick Don: I’m working on my first Cd ‘Everybody Hates Slick’ and I was supposed to do that album from 2008 but at the time I wasn’t ready and glad I didn’t. As an artist going through life you have to tell a story and at that time I didn’t have MUCH TO SAY. But now I have a lot to say and ive realised a lot hate me but its mostly mcs.

MDG: Why? Slick Don: I personally can’t think of any other reason than me being young and succeeded more than any other person in Birmingham my age and a lot who are older.

MDG: Now you’re a man right in the middle of the scene and for sure you know bassline aint as big as it was before, a lot say its dead what do you say about that? Slick Don: It’s not killed or died the reason why the hypes gone down because the police are trying to lock off all the raves in the scene and then you have promoters who don’t want to take the risk of doing a rave.

MDG: Does the police have a lot to do with the influence of people not going to the rave? Slick Don: Not giving people no choice, people are buying tickets and Leeds had locked it off once. But I say this the scene on a whole is a cycle and that happened to grime and now it come back.

MDG: I remember we was at Just Jam and you was saying how you can’t understand how Birmingham doesn’t support you as much as outta towners. Does that really bother you? Slick Don: Although I have Leeds Sheffield Manchester Derby etc supporting me it be nice to have my city behind me more.

MDG: Why didn’t bassline break London? Slick Don: They just to stubborn to accept it and I don’t know why because the sound of bassline is grime influenced but Marcus Nasty pushing it and helping the scene grow, I say this though, Bassline is not dead and all it is was at the forefront now its something else and next year people will be onto the next thing.
