Åland derives its power from nature

With its location in the middle of the sea, awash in salty sea winds and a deep love of nature, it’s no wonder that Åland has set its sights on a future with power from nature’s own green energy. Preferably on the cutting edge with a large dose of innovation.

Ålanders cherish their resources and consider nature and sustainability to be invaluable. In combination with innovation, Åland’s aspiration is to become a pioneer in green energy in the Nordic countries. Wind power already accounts for 90% of Ålands electricity production. The move toward even greater production of renewable energy through large-scale solar power farms and offshore wind farms is already well underway.

rise to shipping, an industry that laid the foundation for today’s economy and took Ålanders all over the world. They have sailed the seven seas and returned with new ideas and, in many cases, the money to realise them and a drive that is typical of these wilful islanders.

In Åland, traditions and modern approaches go hand in hand. Boats are built and Midsummer wreaths are woven while high technology companies serve customers all over the world as well as in the cloud.

In general, the climate here is mild and the summers are usually sunny. Åland is said to have the most hours of sunshine in the Nordic countries from May to August. The nicest way to travel

If you were to book now, when would you be on board?

tallinksilja.com

It’s nice to be home, but nothing beats travelling. Out at sea or beyond, the very essence of travel unfolds during the journey. There is no shortage of beauty to admire while cruising to Åland through Finland’s glorious archipelago. Regardless of your port of departure – Helsinki, Tallinn, Turku or Stockholm. Soothing for the eyes, but also for the soul.

Explore Åland by bus and archipelago ferry

Åland consists of the main island and thousands of other islands of all sizes around it. Many of the bigger islands are inhabited and you can reach them by the local inter-island ferries.

It is easy to explore the Åland Islands.

On the main island there are four main roads with public bus connections to the ferry harbours. Apart from the main roads there are hundreds of kilometres of scenic village roads offering a lot to see and experience.

To help you find your way, you can buy Åland Tourist & Cycling Map, a good companion in every weather!

THE ARCHIPELAGO

When the locals talk about the archipelago, they talk about the islands located east of the main island. These islands can be reached by Ålandstrafiken’s inter-island ferries. You can make day trips to the islands or stay overnight.

Here are some basic facts good to know when you are planning a visit to the archipelago.

Main road 2 leads to Vårdö. There is a short cable ferry crossing operated 24/7 and you don’t need to book the ferry in advance.

From Hummelvik ferry harbour on Vårdö you can take a ferry to Kumlinge and Brändö on the Northern archipelago ferry route.

You can catch a Southern route ferry to Sottunga and Kökar from Långnäs harbour at the end of the main road 3 to Lumparland. There is also a ferry connection on the intermediate ferry route between Föglö and Kumlinge.

To Föglö take a ferry från Svinö ferry harbour, follow the main road 3. The Föglö ferry has many daily departures, and no booking is required. For all other ferries, please remember to make a ferry booking for your vehicle in advance!

RESTAURANTS NOT TO BE MISSED

ENJOY SEAFOOD BY THE PIER

Brasserie Ångbåtsbryggan has a great location in Mariehamn. Just a stone’s throw from the town square, yet at the pier with a nice sea view over the bay and marina in the Eastern Harbour. The restaurant offers a special atmosphere because the walls and the ceiling are made of glass, which gives an illusion of being outdoors when indoors. In late summer and autumn evenings there is extra magic in the air when the natural daylight is shifting into a starry sky. The open kitchen is the heart of the restaurant. You can see the chefs working next to a big stone oven made of local recycled red bricks.

FOOD IN THE TOWN CENTRE

Mariehamn attracts visitors with good food and entertainment. Take a food walk and discover four restaurants with atmosphere, style and variety – everything from great lunches, seafood and à la carte dishes to stone oven baked pizzas. In between you can play adventure golf.

Boquerian is an oasis with a Mediterranean touch. Here you can relax, eat in peace and quiet while enjoying the moment. On the patio and in the restaurant you and your friends can order different kinds of small dishes, such as tapas, cheese and cold cuts, and stay long in good company.

You are welcome to enjoy a traditional mix of cold and hot dishes and share them with your friends. If you want to enjoy the tapas at home, you can visit our cheese and cold cuts counter and select delicacies to take away.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Sittkoffska Gården is a popular meeting point in the middle of Mariehamn. Cosiness, vintage, local raw produce and sustainability are the key words for the restaurant. Take an extra look at the imaginary décor, such as the recycled windows, old pieces of furniture, lush green plants and the gigantic felted elk head. Here you can enjoy genuine homely meals of local raw produce and high quality. Visit also the Farm Store, filled with Åland artisan food products that you can buy home.

CHALLENGE YOUR FAMILY ON ADVENTURE GOLF

Ångbåtsbryggan Adventure Golf is next to Brasseriet in the Eastern Harbour. Here you can have a lunch, coffee or something good to drink before or after a round on the 18-hole mini golf course with fun obstacles. The sunny and spacious outdoor patio has a nice view of several golf holes. The course suits everyone, young and old alike.

PARADISE FOR DISC GOLFERS

There are 18 disc golf courses in Åland, often close to a café or restaurant. All but one are free to play and you can visit several courses in one day. Family-friendly courses such as Kastelholm DGP and Lions DGP in Mariehamn are recommended, as well as Soltuna DGP and Lappo DGP, which offer fantastic sea views. For advanced disc golfers there is the challenging and well-designed Vesterkalmare DGP pay course near Mariehamn.

From adrenaline to relaxation

Many of Åland’s activities provide an exhilarating adrenaline rush, while others offer a calming and enjoyable sense of relaxation. What’s your choice for today?

Everything you can do on the water you can do in Åland. Water sports, such as surfing, kite surfing, paddling and jetskiing are popular. Equipment can be rented on site, for example SUP boards that suit most people.

OUT INTO THE TERRAIN

Mountainbikes or fat bikes, are a good choice for those who like to cycle in the woods. The Eckerö MTB loop, for example, is a 3-kilometre long trail for beginners and offers nice views and fun jumps. Here you can also try to beat the trail record on the training app Strava. For other mountain bike trails, contact BifaBIKE Sportrent, who offer tours with electric bikes, MTBs and fat bikes.

At the Flowpark high-rope adventure course in Vårdö, you can try challenges

high among the treetops. The height itself, about 15 metres above the ground, is often the most pulse-raising. Luckily there are courses at a lower height as well, altogether at four different levels.

You can also get close to nature on horseback: so why not book an outdoor ride? Or try Skogsråddet orienteering with 50 control points near Mariehamn. The map costs 15 euros and is available at Åland Tourist Information, City Sport & Cykel and Team Sportia.

UNWIND

Forest yoga helps your body and soul with recovery. Forest yoga is a combination of Japanese forest bathing (shirin yoko) and soft yoga on the body’s terms. In the summer you can also take a boat excursion and try yoga on a barren rocky islet and enjoy a picnic meal.

Go cycling along winding village roads

Åland offers great cycling routes in all directions. Sometimes along cycling paths, other times along winding village roads with little traffic. Where the road ends, you can continue your journey via a bicycle ferry.

Take a nice roundtrip with an overnight stay. Bike from Mariehamn to Snäckö in Geta and take the bicycle ferry to Skarpnåtö in Hammarland the following day and then pedal back to Mariehamn. The bicycle ferry runs daily between 26 June - 19 August except on Sundays. Departures at 12:00 from Skarpnåtö, and 12.30 from Snäckö. If you don’t want to stay overnight, you can cycle the route another way round, starting towards Hammarland.

Towards Geta, take the road north of Mariehamn to St. Olav’s church in Jomala: one of the oldest preserved stone churches in Finland. From there, take the village road towards Godby and follow the bicycle lanes north to Geta. On the way you pass several

fine restaurants and cafés: Brobacka Café in Ämnäs and Johannas Hembakta and Pub Stallhagen in Grelsby. Other good choices are Grannas Bistro, amidst the apple orchards in Västanträsk, and Soltuna restaurant & café on Geta hills where you can also play disc golf, minigolf and go hiking to Geta’s caves.

DINNER WITH A DIP IN THE SEA

Spend the evening in Snäckö at Lolo’s Seaside Café & Restaurant with outdoor seating on the jetty out to sea. You can take a dip from the jetty! The restaurant serves a Filipino lunch buffet as well as hamburgers and pizzas. You can spend the night in a glamping tent at Snäckö Canvas Hotel. They also rent out saunas, SUP boards and kayaks. Take the bicycle ferry the following day to Skarpnåtö and make a stop at the homestead museum before cycling back to Mariehamn.

World class golf with a sea view

120 top international golfers in the Ladies European Tour agree; Slottsbanan at Åland’s Golf Club is of the highest European standard.

Last year, the Ladies European Tour chose to hold one of its subtournaments in Åland. Afterwards the elite golfers ranked the course as one of the best tournament courses in 2022. It isn’t only the professionals who hold Slotttsbanan in high regard - it is equally popular among recreational golfers.

In the summer of 2020, Slottsbanan reopened after a comprehensive renovation, resulting in a very popular course that follows the seashore even more closely.

Golfers praise the new course for its absolutely lovely stretch along Slottsundet Bay, where you have a view of the sea from all 18 holes. After three played seasons, thousands of rounds and a European tour, it is also clear that Slottsbanan is maintaining its high standards, especially on the greens. In addition to Slottsbanan, Åland

also has Kungsbanan, a beautiful 18-hole course with forested grounds. The Prinsessan short hole course, with its six par 3 holes, is perfect for anyone wanting to give golf a try or work on their technique.

At the club’s facility in Kastelholm, there is another 18-hole course, King’s Course, and Prinsessan with six short holes. Changing rooms with a sauna, driving range, shop and restaurant are also available as well as the opportunity of taking golf lessons.

GOLF IN ECKERÖ

You can find even more beautiful greens and fairways at Eckerö Golf. Golfers of every skill level enjoy it here thanks to the four tees on the club’s 18-hole course. The first nine holes of the course are a bit easier, while the last nine are more challenging. There is a driving range and a service building with showers and accommodation in holiday cottages next to the course.

Archipelago hike with magnificent views

Take a trip to Kökar and discover Åland’s southernmost municipality with recollections of Åland’s past.

Apart from beautiful archipelago nature, Kökar also has an interesting history. In the Middle Ages, King Valdemar’s passage ran through Kökar which was an important stop for crossings to and from Reval, today known as Tallinn. At this time, also a sailors’ chapel and a Franciscan monastery were built on Hamnö. Today, you can visit the monastery cellar near the church displaying archaeological finds from the excavations or go hiking on the culture trail and see the most important historical remains of the site.

Along the Kalen hiking trail you can see Otterböte prehistoric burial mounds and settlements from a seal hunters’ colony from the younger Bronze Age and older Iron Age. The 7-kilometre-long trail (or

the 12 km one, depending on where you start) runs from medium to difficult hilly terrain but is mostly on a rocky surface. An adventure with magnificent views of the open sea, diverse archipelago nature and remains from World War I & II.

If you want to know more about Kökar’s history you can visit the homestead museum, or join a guided tour to the unique island of Källskär and see interesting natural rock formations as well as houses and gardens created by Swedish baron Göran Åkerhielm.

Finally, you can enjoy a meal at Peders Aplagård, Brudhäll and Havspaviljongen.

The ferry from the main island runs along the Southern line from Långnäs harbour, about 30 km from Mariehamn. One way ferry crossing takes 2.5 hours. Make a booking for your vehicle in advance!

Islands to discover in the fantastic Åland archipelago

On calm days, an excursion out to one of Åland’s lighthouses is idyllic, almost magical. The lonesome islands offer marvellous nature experiences and interesting history.

You can visit the islands on guided tours offered by several taxi boat companies. Guided boat tours to the white and slender lighthouse of Sälskär island in the northern archipelago start from Skarpnåtö in Hammarland and Hällö in Geta.

After last year’s renovation, the tall and elegant lighthouse on Sälskär is even whiter and more stately. The lighthouse was manned from 1868 to 1949, when it was made the first automated lighthouse in Finland.

It’s quite fascinating to imagine how the lighthouse master and keepers lived out here on these islands, especially during the winter. At Lågskär lighthouse, the lighthouse keepers lived together with their families. At most, some 30 people lived on

the island, which is now one of the leading bird stations in Finland.

The Märket lighthouse is neither tall nor stately, but it is captivating how it clings to its remote, rocky island. When the winds pick up, waves crash over the entire island. The lighthouse was inaugurated in 1885 and automated in 1976. An international border passes right through the island. Here, you can literally stand with one foot in Finland and the other in Sweden.

MANY MORE BOAT EXCURSIONS

The former pilot station of Kobba Klintar, just off Mariehamn, is a popular day trip destination. The marina at Rödhamn island is famous for its hospitality, delicious cinnamon rolls and interesting history. Near Rödhamn is also Båtskären island, where the association Ådans Vänner maintains an Eider colony and offers guided tours in the spring and early summer.

Excellent conditions for kayaking

Seeing Åland from the water is always an experience, from spring to autumn. Rent a kayak and discover one of the world’s most beautiful archipelagos.

Exploring Åland and its surrounding islands, sea, sky and horizon will give you an unparalleled feeling of freedom. When going by kayak, the water will show you the way, with endless possibilities to be found among the thousands of islands and skerries. You’ll find everything from calm bays for beginners to more challenging paddling water in the outer archipelago, where you can land just about anywhere for a refreshing dip in the sea.

The Norrhavsrutten kayaking route is a tip for those who look for challenges. The entire route extends from Käringsund in the west to Jurmo in the east. Norrhavsrutten is nothing for beginners, but you can easily choose to paddle only parts of it. Or, go kayaking with a guide.

Islands worth visiting in the northern and eastern archipelagos include the Boxö nature reserve with Åland’s largest, the rocks of Saggö island and the Länsmansgrund nature reserve.

Marina Hamnsundet in Saltvik rents out kayaks. You can also book a kayak trip with itineraries, catering and an overnight stay in a traditional archipelago hut or in a glamping tent.

FOR BEGINNERS

Paddelboden paddle shack offers relaxing 2-hour evening kayakings amidst the islands south of Mariehamn on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 27 June & 31 August. You can also book a day excursion with lunch to the pilot station of Kobba Klintar. You can hire canoes/kayaks in Åland. Canoes/kayaks can be driven to a desired put-in and picked up when you are done, provided that the location can be reached by car.

NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE IN ÅLAND. If it has not already been done, it waits to be done. There is a strong faith in future and an impressively wide variation, and we help each other upwards. Everybody is important in a small community shaped by the wild sea.

DO YOU ALSO WANT TO BE A WILLFUL ÅLANDER?

Get your blood pumping in a winter landscape

Åland has a favourable climate for activities on snow and ice. When nature beds down for her long winter’s sleep, ski tracks, ski hills and mirror ice fill up with avid winter sports enthusiasts.

With the help of snow cannons, the ski and biathlon centre of Åland offers tracks for cross-country skiing behind Vikingahallen in Jomala. Maintenance of tracks with artificial snow is not a problem even if the winter weather is not on your side. Whatever the weather, the centre aims to maintain at least a 350-metre-long loop for all enthusiastic cross-country skiers. The colder the winter, the more artificial snow and a longer loop. Winters with a lot of natural snow increase the length to an 8.5-kilometre long course.

For those who prefer downhill skiing there is Germundö Alpin attracting both slalom skiers and snowboarders to the snowy slopes in Saltvik.

ON ICE

In winter, you can also lace up your long-distance skates and go gliding across the icy expanses. When the winter is very cold you can get a long skating season starting when the first lakes and sea inlets freeze and finally ending with magical frozen expanses by the edge of the open sea.

Strong ice also offers ice fishing. You can drill or cut a hole in the ice, but remember to be careful. If you are not familiar with the area, it is best to go fishing or skating with a guide.

Winter swimming is another invigorating trend. Nowadays, almost everyone goes winter swimming - or dreams about it. Åland has the perfect conditions for swimming in the cold - here, it’s usually quite close to the closest pier.

You can also enjoy winter sports indoors. Go skating in the ice hall Islandia or try curling at Eckerö curling hall.

Created the clothing brand she couldn’t find herself

Marie Backman-Thors loves colour, patterns and clothes so much that she has even created her own clothing brand, Dress like Marie. Marie runs her shop in town and an online shop together with her daughters Lisa and Emelie. They want to highlight clothes as a means of expression. According to Marie’s philosophy the clothes that make you happy, give you confidence and emphasize your femininity, also suit you. If you love blue, you should wear blue!

In the shop, you get help to bring out the uniqueness in you and to find the clothing types that suit your figure. Sometimes it’s just a matter of getting a small challenge and courage to try out new things. At Dress Like Marie, the goal is to help women find their style and become more confident in it.

• Visit Marie in her shop in the middle of Mariehamn on Torggatan 12, or visit www.dresslikemarie.com.

The four most common body types

Apple shaped

Are you wonderfully curvy without a marked waist and with narrow, nice legs? Are your shoulders, waist and hips about the same width? Perfect! You have an apple shaped body type.

Straight

Do you have a less defined waist and about the same dimensions around the hip, waist and bust? Excellent! Your body shape is straight. The butt can be both full or of a slightly smaller variety, the shape can be soft or sharp.

Hourglass shaped

Do you have lovely feminine shapes with a well-marked waist? As hourglass shaped, you have shoulders as wide as your hips and a clearly marked waist. The bust can be either large or small.

Pear shaped

Do you have narrow shoulders that also slope down? Fuller butt and thighs are also characteristic of a lovely pear shaped body type, which is a classic female figure.

GET HELP WITH STYLING!

We offer personal styling service at Torggatan 12, in the town centre.

Choose Åland for training or competing!

During the year, several fun runs are held, with classes ranging from elite to enthusiasts just having a go.

The season is long - you can train outdoors all year round. From winter sports to holiday runs.

If your thing is crawling and running, you should absolutely take part in the Åland Swimrun, where the archipelago is the event venue. The courses pass over islands and cross open water, throwing everything from waves to slippery rocks at you. This is a real challenge, even for seasoned athletes. Fortunately, there are also classes for regular fitness enthusiasts.

Many people love being able to combine training and competing with family holidays. In many cases, competition days are real family gatherings, where even members of the family not competing can

find plenty to do, either in the competition area or anywhere in Åland.

Road cyclists say that Åland is the Mallorca of the North, but better! This is due to lighter traffic combined with ideal roads and beautiful natural surroundings. A total of 1,100 kilometres of public roads and 150 kilometres of bike trails are perfect for anyone who wants to get in a cycling workout on their holiday. Or compete in a bike race.

FINISHING OFF THE SEASON

Close out the competition season with a run in October, when the air is clear and loaded with oxygen. The 22 kilometre-long Kanonloppet (Cannon Run) crosses varied terrain, while the Åland Marathon & ½ Marathon is a city run through the streets of Mariehamn. Then, you can loosen up your tired muscles with a steamy sauna and good night’s sleep at the hotel.

Biking in Åland

Åland is a pleasant place for biking, with lovely sceneries and many places of interest. In order for you to have a safe and nice bicycle trip, here is some advice on what you as a cyclist should know.

Did you know that the bike is a vehicle and its rider a driver? Thus, the same rules apply for bicycles as for other vehicles. Right-hand traffic applies for cyclists on roads and on cycle paths too. As a driver of a vehicle you must observe right of way for vehicles approaching from the right. This doesn’t mean you can simply charge ahead into an intersecting roadway without looking. You have to exercise the care that circumstances demand. This is all about interaction with other people and respect for agreements and rules of traffic. For your own safety you need to pay attention in every situtation even if you have the right of way.

Please remember only children under 12 years of age can ride a bicycle on the sidewalk. Cyclists can travel side by side only when this can be done without danger, and not at all on sidewalks. Bicycles with more than two wheels, as well as mopeds, can’t be driven side by side with another bicycle or moped at all.

Sign well in advance when making a turn, look behind you and make sure you can turn without risk.

A safe bicycle is equipped with a bell, working brakes, white reflector in front, red in back, orange spoke reflectors (2 pcs) and lamp back and front. Use a reflective vest while biking to make sure you’re visible at a distance. Last but not least, don’t forget your helmet, it’s a cheap life insurance!

Road signs to be aware of

Walkway

This is a walkway, biking not allowed.

Walkway/cycle path

This path is divided into one part for pedestrians and one for cyclists. The symbols on the sign tell you which part is meant for which category.

Right of way

Cyclists entering a road area from a cycle path must observe right of way. This means that you lower your speed in time or stop, and you can only continue when there is no traffic with right of way. NB! As a cyclist ou must always observe right of way, even when the crossing is marked in white for cyclists.

Stop sign

All vehicles must stop at this sign, this also includes bicycles.

Pedestrian crossing

All vehicles, including bicycles, must let pedestrians cross. At a crossing with no marking in white for cyclists, you should walk your bicycle across.

Bicycle path

The sign indicates distance to a location along the bicycle path.

Bicycle crossing

When you are crossing a road via a bicycle crossing, you must give way to crossing traffic.

We wish you a safe and pleasant bike ride on Åland

Don´t forget your helmet, it´s a cheap life insurance!

Experience nature with glamour

Glamping, in other words glamorous camping, is perfect for you who want to enjoy nature in an adventurous way, but still within your comfort zone.

Glamping is to sleep in a tent amidst nature, but on a mattress in a real bed. Outdoors, but in a spacious tent with high ceiling and comfortable furnishing. Glamping provides the perfect experience to enjoy luxury and glamour in nature, for example at Snäckö Canvas Hotel.

Rundhusbyn also offers glamping tents for rent. You choose the time and place, and the tent will be pitched up and furnished for you. If you want extra comfort you can choose a tent with a stove. Or, rent a sauna tent!

Beaches and campsites are popular sites for glamping, but Rundhusbyn also offers customised all-in-one packages with a tent on a private location on an isthmus in northern Saltvik.

If you long for a wood heated hot tub or sauna for your accommodation, you can rent one from AX Rent. They offer mobile saunas and hot tubs that are easy to transport on a trailer. At Sandösund Resort in Vårdö you can relax in a floating sauna.

EVERYMAN’S RIGHTS

In Åland the right of common access, Everyman’s rights, is more limited than in Sweden and on the mainland of Finland. Campsites are recommended for an overnight stay, unless you have the landowner’s permission for wild camping. All campsites are located on scenic places by the sea, and they offer bathing beaches, saunas and other services. Read more about the right of common access at Visitaland.com

Wonderful holiday for the whole family

All it takes to make the whole family happy is sun and a place to swim. Luckily you can find lots all over Åland!

As well as swimming, there are indoor play halls and wildlife safaris to keep the family entertained. This summer, Smart Park in Eckerö attracts kids and adults alike with a new fun six-wheeled Crazi Bugz, with a joystick operated skid steer buggy which you drive on a terrain trail. While the younger kids enjoy outdoor games, the older ones can have fun playing a round of Laser Tag indoors. Active children can also enjoy all inflatable play equipment at Leklandet in Eckeröhallen and Palleralla in Jomala. A farm visit is always a lot of fun for all the family. At Nygård’s forest pig farm in Sund you can join a pig safari every Wednesday in July and make friends with the happy pigs on the farm. There is a tour

with a horse and carriage starting at 3pm and a tractor-pulled wagon at 6pm

You can join a wildlife safari in a game enclosure in Käringsund with wild animals along with the opportunity to see fallow deer, wild boars, ostriches and llamas up close.

BEACH DAYS

Sunny days and swimming go hand in hand. Sand beaches for families with small children and, for the older kids, a diving platform is just the ticket. All these can be found on bathing beaches such as Bambölevik, Västerviken and Sinting, while Degersand attracts with its fine sandy beach.

Käringsund Resort in Eckerö is a tip for those who want to experience everything with a day ticket, including a dip in the sea, pool hangout, minigolf, pedal boats and much more.

BOMARSUND FORTRESS RUINS

After belonging to Sweden, Åland and Finland became part of the Russian Empire after the Finnish War of 1808-1809. At the same time, Åland was made the farthest western outpost of the Russian Empire, and construction of the massive fortifications at Bomarsund began in 1830. The fortress was later destroyed by French and English forces during the Crimean War in 1854, but the ruins remain to this day. At the new Visitor Centre, you can experience the rise and fall of Bomarsund with sound and images before heading out to the fortress site itself.

HIKE THROUGH THE HISTORY

In Bomarsund you can follow two hiking trails. The terrain is hilly, so steady shoes are recommended. The 4.2-kilometre trail goes around the old fortress area. Start from the main fort or from Notvikstornet hill, one of the best lookout places. On the neighbouring island of Prästö the trail starts from Lotsstugan pilot cottage. Along the 5.3-kilometre trail you will pass historic sites and cemeteries dating back to the 1800s, when Åland was a part of the Russian empire.

USE THE APP!

Want to know more about the fascinating history of Bomarsund? Want to see pictures of the large-scale military undertaking? Videos? Want to hear more? Just download the Coastal Past app on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Available in Swedish, Finnish, English and Russian.

Discover the many sights of Kastelholm

Kastelholm is a lovely daytrip destination for the whole family. There is a lot in a small area, including a medieval castle, disc golf course and a genuine candy factory.

Kastelholm Castle from 1380s is the only medieval castle in Åland. The heyday of the castle was under the reign of King Gustav Vasa when Åland and Finland belonged to Sweden. The son, King Erik XIV was imprisoned in the castle together with his spouse Karin Månsdotter.

The castle was rebuilt and enlarged several times up to the 1630s, but started falling into ruin after a devastating fire. Today the castle has been restored and it is a living museum, open to visitors between May and September.

Behind the castle is the Jan Karlsgården open-air museum, Ålands Skansen, with older buildings from the 1800s and even more stories about olden times. For example a cow shed, oxen stable, smithy, smoke

sauna and the main house. All buildings are open for visitors. Events are arranged during the summer, including Midsummer Eve’s celebrations, and a traditional Christmas market. In July there are child-friendly activities.

The prison museum of Vita Björn is located opposite Jan Karlsgården. The prison was built in 1784 and it is the oldest preserved prison building in Finland. Next to the museum area there is a popular discgolf course.

FLAVOURS FOR ALL SENSES

There are two restaurants to choose from: Åland Distillery och Smakbyn. Enjoy lunch, dinner or just sit down for coffee. At Smakbyn you can also visit ceramist Mia Englund’s pottery shop and Ålands Karamelleriet’s candy factory and taste their lollipops of many flavours, such as wild strawberry.

Unique gems to discover

A beach hotel, a skipper’s homestead, an archipelago homestead and an apple orchard. There are many charming places to visit.

Enjoy beach life at the elegant beachfront bar at Carlsro Badhotell in Degerby. Settle down on one of the red-and-white striped sun loungers whilst having a refreshing drink and then take a dip in the sea. Feel free to combine this with an overnight stay at the hotel, beach sauna and have a Danish-Ålandic smørrebrød sandwich.

Skipper’s homestead Pellas in Lemland contains a significant amount of Åland maritime history. Today, the stately farmhouse is a welcoming museum with a summer café that serves traditional Åland pancakes. Enjoy the atmosphere and get a glimpse of life in the Åland countryside at the turn of the last century. Nearby is the sea with smooth red granite rocks and a fantastic view of the Lumparn sea inlet.

APPLES AND ISLANDS

In the middle of the Åland apple orchard area lies Tjudö village. Here, the apple farmers at Öfvergårds invite you to an apple safari, a wonderful tasting experience amidst the farm’s orchards along with the very best raw pressed apple juices Åland can offer. A real apple exploration! Here you can book a little wheel carriage for a picnic and enjoy a break under the trees in the orchards.

The Silverskär Islands with its four separate islands is unique and, this summer, all visitors and guests have the opportunity to visit the islands and enjoy the surroundings of the old archipelago home. Book a summer dinner at Silverskär, or join a guided tour to a barren island of Klobben, a modern old-style fishing camp on the edge of the sea.

Welcome aboard to join an adventure

You don’t need to be a maritime history enthusiast to appreciate the Åland Maritime Museum and the tall ship Pommern. Do not be surprised if you are inspired once you hop onboard.

This year, the stately Pommern turns 120 years old. The tall ship was launched in Glasgow on 31 January 1903. Today she is moored in a purpose built dock in the harbour as there will be no more voyages. You can climb aboard the tall ship that is fully accessible and join a fictional 100-day voyage around the world in the 1930s. Start on the weather deck where you will walk about and eavesdrop on the crew with the help of an audio guide. What’s even more fun is that kids and adults can share the experience together. While adults listen to their audio guide, children can do the same adventure with the ship’s rat Ruby keeping them company. Sometimes Ruby

sounds so real that many of the youngest visitors think that the ship is about to leave the quay.

Under the deck, accessible by lift, you can experience the voyage in two ways. You can try out things yourself and then finish the tour all the way down in the hold with a sound and light show that simulates the stormy seas.

MORE MARITIME HISTORY

With the same ticket you can also visit the Maritime Museum, a favourite of the young and old alike. Kids love the Sea Monsters exhibition, scary enough, while also exploring the Cabinet of Curiosities and the pirate flag, the treasure hunt with Ruby the Rat, and the imaginative underwater world in children’s play room.

Blooming floral experiences for all the senses

Visit a garden or a nature reserve and enjoy nature’s colours, shapes, scents, tastes and structures in combination with peace and harmony.

The visitor garden SENSES, in Lemland, cannot be described with words as it needs to be seen with your own eyes. This large and generous garden offers plenty of inspiration and surprises. The hosts, Marcus and Birgitta, have succeeded in creating an immersive experience for all the senses. The garden is in bloom throughout the season and the plants transform in to others from early spring to late autumn appearing like big brushstrokes as plants of the same variety create a mass effect of spectacular bright colour scales. Check the garden’s and cafés opening hours before your visit. In the middle of Mariehamn, behind a yellow-painted fence on Nygatan, there is

the ecological garden Mariero taking shape and is open to public daily from 8am until 8pm.

If you prefer to pick fresh flowers then Älvdalens Trädgård in Finström offers slow flowers; cut flowers for self-picking in season grown under natural conditions. There is also a self-service flower stall nearby.

NATURE WALKS

Enjoy peace and harmony with floral splendour in Åland’s nature reserves. Near Mariehamn is Ramsholmen, known for both the ramson and the white anemone meadows alongside the wooded meadow of Nåtö in a cultural landscape. If you want to see the snake’s head fritillary in bloom be sure to visit Höckböleholmen in Geta.

Plenty to explore in Eckerö

Eckerö has something for everyone. Arts, culture, history, culinary delights and activities. Pick your choice and spend a day in Eckerö.

The stately Eckerö Post and Customs House from 1828 was designed by architects Carl Ludvig Engel and Carlo Bassi in the Empire style. Start your Eckerö tour by visiting the museum shop and the two crafts exhibitions this summer. The sheltered inner yard is perfect for kids to play and run around.

For hikers there are two walking routes in the village of Storby, and hiking trails in Träsket nature reserve and in Lassas-Långnäs.

PICTURESQUE FISHING HARBOUR

The Hunting and Fishing Museum in the fishing village of Käringsund displays Åland’s cultural history.

The wooden museum building resembles a cluster of boathouses. Inside await many experiences, everything from seal hunting to children’s herring market. Follow the Geo Path outside the museum and learn more about the geological history of Åland. The children like to climb around on the salmon trawler Svanö. More family-friendly tips on Eckerö can be found on page 31.

Next door to the museum there is the popular Gastropub Bodegan. Remember to book in advance!

Pleasant days in the holiday city of Mariehamn

Mariehamn with its beautiful location between two sea inlets offers everything from a dip in the sea to restaurants, entertainment and museums.

Being close to everything is one of the advantages of the small town. Mariehamn is easy to discover on foot, and there are several walking trails and city walks to choose from. Take the shoreline promenade up to Badhusberget Hill to get a bird’s eye view of Mariehamn. Or play a round of disc golf at Badhusparken.

Mariehamn’s eastern side is the place for swimming and sunbathing all day long. Here you’ll find Nabben, with its gently sloping sand beach and charming seaside setting. The sand beach at Lilla holmen is also family-friendly, with its swimming pier, pirate ship, rabbits and peacocks. Mariebad swimming centre and outdoor pools at Hotel Arkipelag and Cikada are good choices for those who prefer tiled swimming pools instead of sandy beaches. The town square

is the natural meeting place with a playground and park. Visit the outdoor market, or borrow fun giant yard games, available from spring to autumn.

Stroll along the Torggatan pedestrian street and go shopping, visit the Maritime Quarter, one of the museums or a cosy café.

EVENING ENTERTAINMENT

Good restaurants, bars and food stands are always near. Some offer singer-songwriters, dj’s and live music, while other invite to activities, such as adventure golf. The block at Nygatan/Strandgatan is called Lilla Torget, the little square. Indigo Restaurant & Bar, Dinos Bar & Grill, Kino Nightclub and The Calypso Bar all serve good drinks in the oldest buildings in town.

LIFE OF ARTISTIC CREATIVITY

Artist Guy Frisk (1943-2022) plays a central role in the Åland Island Art Museum summer exhibition.

Frisk was born in Lovisa, moved to Åland in 1961 and became a well-known artist in Åland and the Nordic countries. Frisk’s artistic range includes everything from watercolours, oil paintings and graphics to collages, drawings and self portraits. He worked in bright colours, often adopting new motifs and techniques.

SUMMER

Theatre really brightens up your day!

Summer plays and Christmas tales: Romantic drama to literature’s greatest classics - and everything in between. Let the play begin!

Teater Gården’s intimate and well-performed plays are a sure sign of summer. This season, the theatre group invites you to enjoy the contemporary comedy “Art” written by Yasmina Reza. The friendship between three men is put to the test when one of them buys a painting and their relationships are shaken to the core. How can a painting have such consequences? On the outdoor stage are actors Robert Enckell, Sampo Sarkola and Marc Svahnström. Experience the relationship drama in the garden of GE Villa in Mariehamn, from midsummer until 10 July.

LOVED CLASSICS

Teater Ofelia goes on summer tour with its one-man adaptation of William Shake-

speare’s immortal tragedy “Romeo & Juliet”. Nicklas Lantz has written, directed and designed the show to be a vivid mix of narrative theatre, classical theatre, poetry, spoken word and commedia dell’arte.

You can also join a journey “Around the world in 80 days”. Theatre group Kompani Nord stages Jules Verne’s beloved classic as a music and dance comedy for the whole family in Alandica’s auditorium. Premiere’s on September 13.

In the autumn the theatre association Teaterföreningen i Mariehamn has ambitious plans to stage Strindberg’s “The People of Hemsö” with Swedish director Olle Törnqvist at the helm. Premiere in October with performances into November.

As Christmas approaches, Charles Dickens’ classic “A Christmas Tale” arrives with Christmas carols and dances by Teater Alandica. This family show premieres on 25 November.

FROM AN ISLAND INTO TOWN

Beautiful garden and good food continue to attract satisfied visitors to Kallas SkärGård in the archipelago municipality of Vårdö. The restaurant is housed in an old barn, but in summertime you are invited to enjoy your meal in the verdant garden. On the menu you can find everything from freshly caught fish to tender entrecotes of the highest quality. Don’t miss the sister restaurant Kallas Stadskrog in Mariehamn with a bar and patio, and with the same successful concept.

Great selection of restaurants to enjoy

Åland has many fine restaurants in many different environs and sceneries. Choose your favourite ones!

Many restaurants in Mariehamn are beautifully located next to the sea in the town’s two marinas. In the east you can choose between F.P von Knorring, Brasserie Ångbåtsbryggan, Club Marin, Arken Garden, Pub Niska and the restaurant ship M/S Sunnan II which offers lunch and dinner cruises. The best evening sun can be found in the western harbour at restaurant Nautical, ÅSS Paviljongen and Pub Albin.

In the town centre you can also choose from many restaurants, such as Compagniet, which is perfect for just hanging out. Surrounded by draperies and Oriental rugs, you and your gang can eat well, savour some exciting gin drinks and play a round of shuffleboard, boule and billiards.

Indigo Restauran & Bar, Boquerian, Park Restaurant & Bar and the summer restaurant Arken Garden are also popular.

IN THE COUNTRYSIDE OR ON THE WATERFRONT

For culinary experiences in the countryside, visit Michael Björklund’s restaurant Smakbyn in Sund, Mormors Gröna Hus in Lemland or sit down next to apple orchards at Grannas Bistro in Finström.

In the archipelago the restaurants are often located on the waterfront with unparalleled sea views. Worth a visit are Brudhäll on Kökar, Restaurant Salteriet on Sottunga, Hamnmagasinet on Vårdö and Seagram on Föglö.

On the main island choose the seafront restaurants Gastropub Bodegan and Restaurant Q in Eckerö, and Lolo’s Seaside Café & Restaurant in Geta.

THE BREWERY’S OWN GASTROPUB

Good taste and sustainability go hand in hand at the gastropub Stallhagen when it serves hearty and delicious food with love for local raw produce of the season. The food philosophy is à la Axgan with focus on Åland ingredients. You can always choose between a fish, meat or vegan dish. The menu changes daily according to the best harvest and catch of the day. Feel free to combine with craft beer directly from the brewery.

FOOD

Be an Axgan – enjoy Åland’s locally produced food

Many farmers and food artisans offer a wide range of locally produced raw produce and food products, such as fruit and vegetable, sea buckthorn berries, and honey.

During the harvest season it’s easier than ever to be an “Axgan” - in other words, to eat, drink and buy locally. The concept of “axgan” means you only consume products and produce made in Åland while you are in Åland. Thanks to the many small scale producers and wide range of products, you can enjoy everything from fruits, green vegetables, meats and fish to sea buckthorn and honey.

Perfect conditions for beekeeping provide first-class honey and honey products, such as honey candies from Åland Honey.

GROCERY STORES

Keep an eye out for Odlarringen cooperative of organic farmers. Local organic

products also include a wide range of flour and groats from Överäng’s mill. Ålandsmejeriet ÅCA has organic milk in its range. Farmers also sell fruit, vegetables and root vegetables through Ålands Trädgårdshall cooperative.

You can also buy local raw produce and organic food products direct from the farmers and food artisans through many networks, for example by joining the Facebook group REKOÅland. Locals and visitors alike are welcome! The REKO platform offers for example organically grown potatoes, carrots and other veggies, eggs, bread, cakes, meats, jams, sea buckthorn berry juice and fermented products and fresh micro vegetables, such as radish and asparagus.

Fill your glass with award-winning apple juice

Åland is Finland’s apple orchard, as much as three out of four apples are grown here. This means both good apples to eat and tasty juice to drink.

Öfvergårds apple grower won a gold medal in the Nordic Artisan Food Awards 2022 with raw pressed juice, Eva-Lotta. According to the judges, the juice “is a tart, alcohol-free and interesting drink that is the perfect accompaniment for meals and festive occasions.” The classic apple juice Zonga won a silver medal, and three weeks later, took gold in the Finnish championship in artisan food.

Öfvergårds orchard presses its juice from first-class apples. Only one apple cultivar is used for each juice. This enhances the characteristic colour, flavour and character of the raw pressed juice. All different varieties of juice can be sampled in the farm shop’s juice bar. To describe and characterise the taste, the apple grower

Öfvergårds has also had the help of Vinsmedjan’s sommelier Ella Grüssner Cromwell-Morgan. She describes Zonga juice as ”a white-yellow apple juice with great fruity sweetness and balanced acidity.”

First class apple juice is also available by the orchards Karl-Ers Frukt, Snäckö Frukt and Grannas Äppel. Snäckö, Grannas and Öfvergårds run farm shops. In addition, Öfvergårds offers both apple safaris and picnics in the orchard.

LEMONADES AND CARBONATED SOFT DRINKS

Peders Aplagård on Kökar refines the orchard’s produce into non-alcoholic lemonades and soft drinks. Also visit Amalia’s Limonadfabrik in Lemland, which produces lemonade flavoured with raspberries, blueberries and black currants, among others. Aplagården and Amalias also have summer cafés and farm shops.

Charming countryside cafés

A trip to the countryside is always more fun if you have something delicious to look forward to. Here we have listed some of the most charming ones for you to discover.

The lovely Bagarstugan café in Mariehamn is housed in one of the oldest buildings in town. Tucked away behind the blue door of the red wooden house are flowery cups, crocheted doilies and all manner of cakes, each tastier than the next. Don’t forget to explore the secret little passage to the outdoor terrace, where you’ll almost need to bend down to slip under the rose trellis. Discover the same cosy ”fika” atmosphere at café Viktor and Svarta Katten in Mariehamn. Artisan Lotta Gustafsson welcomes guests to Stickstugan Hantverk & Café on Järsö, south of Mariehamn. Here you can enjoy a charming mix of a cake galore and colourful ceramics, textiles and garden delights. Also the family-friendly Humlan

greenhouse café in Norrby serves good coffee and cakes and has a large green lawn for kids to run around.

ALWAYS CLOSE TO A FIKA

Solkulla Gård with a bakery and café in Emkarby village bakes both sweet and salty treats. Try their doughnut speciality ”Närpes grisar” or Solkulla’s pizzas.

Brobacka B&B in Björsby runs a café in a red-painted wooden house. With its country style interiors and verdant garden it is a true serene oasis. Take your time and enjoy!

Also well worth a visit is the café Uffe på Berget by the Färjsundsbron bridge, with a fantastic view over Saltvik.

Finally, don’t miss Johannas Hembakta, a stone-oven bakery with a café next to Hotel Stalldalen in Grelsby.

Delicious and inspiring artisanal food

Artisanal foods are flourishing in Åland, thanks to outstanding raw produce and creative food artisans. It is easy to fill both the glass and the plate with local food and beverages.

Many farms refine their own raw ingredients. Milk is turned into cheese at Mattas farm dairy, meat is used to produce tasty sausages at Marskogens Lamm sheep farm and organically grown grains are milled into meals at Överäng Mill.

Apple growers such as Grannas, Snäckö Frukt and Öfvergårds have refined their ability to make use of the entire harvest by producing fresh-pressed apple juice, chutney and pickled “äppelskott” (unripe windfall apples). Many farms and food artisans welcome visitors on guided tours.

TASTE EXPERIENCES

Many food artisans are into creating good food and beverages. Among all awarded

flavours and products, you can, for example, keep an eye out for Våffelrakan Food Truck at several outdoor events. The Food Truck’s specialty is fresh grated Åland potato fried in a waffle pan and served with various condiments, such as red onion, sour cream and whitefish roe.

At Västerro, the fisherman and food artisan Anders Westerberg experiments with the bounty of the land and sea in his special smokery and gastronomic greenhouse.

Here you can book different dining experiences for you and your friends.

The coffee lovers at the micro roastery Rosteriverket in their turn are passionate about roasting beans for that perfect cup of coffee. For the ultimate experience try Mercedes Chocolaterie’s handmade pralines or MarBi Backen sweets for dessert.

Mariehamn

– the hub of Åland

In Mariehamn, all you need is within a few blocks; shopping, restaurants, cafés, culture and a gentle hubbub.

Mariehamn, the smallest metropolis of the Nordics, has been Åland’s capital and only town since 1861. The town celebrated its 160th anniversary in February 2021.

Mariehamn has a charming town centre with an abundance of shops, cafés and restaurants. Here you have access to free WiFi, sponsored by City Mariehamn, a community the aim of which is to develop the city centre by making it more attractive to locals and visitors alike.

GO SHOPPING!

In Mariehamn you can find shops for all tastes.

You can easily find the everyday and party vacation outfits for the whole family in the fashion stores and shoe shops. Sports, hunting and outdoor enthusiasts

can also find the right gear in Mariehamn.

There is also everything from fabrics and furnishings to kitchenware and utensils. The shops offer a good mix of Ålandic, Finnish and other Nordic designs.

Make-up, skincare and other beauty products, as well as flowers, books, jewellery, watches and gifts are available.

There is also the Finnish state monopoly liquor store Alko, two pharmacies as well as vintage and second hand stores in the town centre.

The majority of the shops are located along the pedestrian street Torggatan, as well as Norragatan and in Sittkoff Gallerian and Torggallerian.

After shopping, you can sit down at one of the cosy cafés and restaurants to enjoy good food and drink. Restaurants and cafés serve food with local Åland ingredients, and there is always takeaway for a picnic on the green.

FREE PARKING

Parking next to all shops, cafés and restaurants is free in Mariehamn. In the inner town, parking is limited to two hours. In the Sittkoffs underground parking garage and next to the Town Library, parking is limited to three hours. A parking disc is compulsory!

CARAVAN OR A MOBILE HOME

If you are travelling with a caravan or a mobile home, we recommend Gröna Udden campsite. The campsite is just over a kilometre south of the centre and offers excellent service and a lovely sandy beach.

THE TOWN OF A THOUSAND LINDEN TREES

Mariehamn is called ”the town of a thousand linden trees” because of the linden tree Esplanade between the Eastern and Western harbours. The town is also often called a maritime town, because of the proud maritime heritage and the importance of the shipping in the local economy. The well-being of the environment is important for an island in the middle of the Baltic Sea. The municipality is certified in environmental management according to the international standard ISO 14001.

THE PULSE OF THE TOWN CENTRE!

The centre of Mariehamn is filled with various events and activities all year round. Enjoy live music, performances, familyfriendly activities and much more. See you in the City! Read more at citymariehamn.ax

Åland’s largest selection of shopping, unique boutiques, restaurants and cosy cafés in charming setting.

A walking-friendly town

Being close to everything is one of the advantages of a small town. Mariehamn is easy to discover on foot. The distance between the town’s two harbours is just over one kilometre, and the streets are paved with interesting history.

Mariehamn offers many exciting encounters between new and old worlds. Today the western harbour is the port for modern ferries and cruise ships, but here you can also see the tall ship Pommern, which was built in 1903 and is the world’s only fourmasted barque in its original condition. Combine a visit to the Pommern with the Maritime Museum for a deeper dive into Åland’s impressive maritime history.

Walk along the path up to Badhusberget’s lookout place to get a bird’s eye view of Mariehamn. Every afternoon around 2 p.m. you can see several ferries on the fairway to the port of Mariehamn.

In the western harbour you can find ÅSS Paviljongen and other buildings from the town’s spa resort era in the early 20th century. Then follow the Esplanade

towards the town centre. The Esplanade linden alley dates back to the original town plan from 1859.

At St. Göran’s Church from 1927 you can stop and admire the murals and window paintings. The church, as well as the buildings of the Åland Navigation Institute and the Town Hall are designed by architect Lars Sonck.

Another style of architecture can be found along Södragatan, one of the oldest streets in town with fin-de-siècle wooden houses designed by Hilda Hongell, born in Mariehamn and Finland’s first female Master Builder.

SUNBATHING AND SWIMMING

Mariehamn’s eastern seaside attracts with restaurants and shopping around the Torggatan pedestrian street. You can also visit the Cultural History Museum of Åland and Åland Art Museum, or enjoy of a dip in the sea by Lilla Holmen’s sandy beach where there is also a jetty, kiddie’s pirate ship and peacocks. The Maritime Quarter and Mariebad swimming centre are also favourites for all the family.

www.aland.com – 97 MARIEHAMN

Recreation, biodiversity and water protection

The Town of Mariehamn works actively to reduce its environmental impact on the sea, beaches and waterways. The environmental work includes the town’s two wetlands which offer as much pleasure as benefit.

At the far end of the bay, which lies along the eastern side of Mariehamn, there is Nabben’s multifunctional wetland that is open to visitors. The purpose of the wetland is to purify rainwater that flows into the bay and protect our bio-diversity. Meadow flowers have been sown on the banks to attract butterflies and bumblebees. There are also nesting boxes for birds and the wetland has been stocked with pike fry. The area is accessible with trails and ramps and information signs highlight notable flora and fauna in the area. Nabben’s wetland won the Nordic Council’s Environmental Award year 2022.

NEW WETLAND IN APALÄNGEN

Construction of wetlands and ponds are two natural methods that are often used to purify water. At the very end of the bay, on Mariehamn’s western side, there is Apalängen’s multifunctional wetland at the mouth of the Sviby river. While the wetland absorbs nutrients all year round, pike, among other fish, spawn in the shallow pond in March and April. The newly created wetland opened for visitors in spring 2023. Here you can go walking along a nature trail and climb up a birdwatching tower. Apart from recreation and enjoying the plant and animal life up close, the wetland also has an important function as a nutrient trap and a place for biodiversity.

LIBRARY STORIES

The beautiful Town Library of Mariehamn is wellstocked. Apart from borrowing books, you can find a wide range of daily papers and magazines. There is a generous section for kids, and a special Alandica collection with books written in and about Åland. The library arranges arts exhibitions as well as music and theatre performances, especially for children. Visit the library at Strandgatan 29.

THE MARITIME QUARTER IS A GEM

Amidst the charming red-painted boat sheds in the Maritime Quarter on Mariehamn’s eastern seaside you will encounter artists, artisans, smiths, boatbuilders and pizza makers in a cosy, pleasant little community. The Maritime Quarter is busiest in the summer, but it is a popular walking destination throughout the year. Sit down on the jetty, visit the museum or stroll around and enjoy the atmosphere. Visit the tiny sailor’s chapel for a silent moment. During the year, there are several events arranged, including a tar market and a Christmas market.

MARIEHAMN IN A MUSEUM

Would you like to see what Mariehamn looked like a century ago? Mariehamnsmuseet is a small museum displaying a miniature model of the town in the 1920s. The houses have been built according to original drawings and with small details, such as cats and chimney sweepers on roofs. The museum is located at Ålandsvägen 42, open from the middle of June until the middle of August between Tuesday and Sunday at 12-15.

MARIEHAMN

Beach volleyball, swimming centre and skate park

Anyone in the family who likes to skateboard? The skatepark is located next to the library and is free to use.

The skate park with various ramps was opened in Mariehamn a couple of years ago. It is centrally located below the library and next to Alandica Culture and Congress Hall. The park is free to use for everyone and here you can meet like-minded skaters!

BEACH VOLLEY AND SWIMMING CENTRE

If you like beach volleyball, Mariehamn is the place for you. There is one court on Nabben beach, one on Lilla Holmen and three courts on the beach next to Mariebad swimming centre.

Mariebad is the swimming centre for all the family! Here you can swim in a regular eight-lane pool, or you can relax and enjoy the adventure pool with a water slide, massage jets, jacuzzi and a heated outdoor pool to swim out to. For the youngest, there is a corner with extra shallow pools.

Massage and wellness treatments can be booked upstairs.

BATHING BEACHES

There are four sandy beaches in Mariehamn, at Mariebad, Nabben, Lilla Holmen and by the campsite of Gröna Udden. All of these are child-friendly, Nabben being the shallowest one.

PLAYGROUNDS

Mariehamn has many playgrounds with swings, slides and climbing frames. Playgrounds are located at the town square, next to Alandica Culture Hall, and on Lilla Holmen. There is also a playground next to the Swedish Consulate, near ÅSS marina. See the map on page 96.

100 – www.aland.com

DISC GOLF AT BADHUSPARKEN

Badhusparken has a beautiful location on a hill above the Western harbour. The view over the sailing ship Pommern and ÅSS visitors’ marina is great. The 9-hole disc golf course is set amidst tall pine trees and lower crooked pines growing on the rocks. Discs can be bought at a local sports shop or you can rent them in a nearby ice cream kiosk or at Åland tourist information office at Storagatan.

EXERCISE OUTDOORS!

Next to Idrottsparken in Mariehamn there is a short jogging track with varying terrain. There is an outdoor gym for everyone to use 24/7. There is an other outdoor gym next to Strandnäs school in northern Mariehamn. Baltichallen in southern Mariehamn also has a jogging track of a couple of kilometres and an outdoor gym.

SPORTS AT BALTIC ARENA

Mariehamn boasts with several excellent sports facilities, for example the Islandia ice hall and the bowling hall at Idrottsgården, among others. There are also several football pitches with grass and artificial turf. The newest of the facilities is Baltic Friidrottsarena in southern Mariehamn. Baltic Arena is a complete athletics facility with an 8-lane track and with adjacent facilities for jumping and throwing events. There is also a time taking system and a small stand. Dressing rooms are available next door in Baltichallen multi-sports hall.

MARIEHAMN

SALT – A LIVING ARTS & CRAFTS HOUSE

Women dominate Åland’s arts and crafts scene. A good example, located in the Maritime Quarter, is SALT, run by six female creative artisans. In the shop you can always meet one of them and hear more about their work. Some of them also have their studios under the same roof. In the shop you can find their products along with selected items of other artists and artisans.

102 – www.aland.com

Cultural heritage and crafts traditions

Åland has many active associations and committed volunteers who aim to preserve previous generations’ knowledge of traditional craft work.

The Maritime Quarter is a living gathering spot for arts and traditional crafts. Among the boat builders, sailmakers and joiners, you’ll also find numerous enthusiasts of building maintenance and rope work. Here you can wander among the boathouses and along the piers, and feel the scents of tar. Sometimes you can see some of the regularly ongoing activities in the Quarter, from the clang of the smith’s hammer to renovation of old engines or the construction of the galeas Emelia. Her launch is planned for 2024 during the Tall Ships’ Races in Mariehamn. Also worth a visit is the museum with exhibitions about ship and boat building from past.

SAILS, STEAM ENGINES AND CRAFTS

At the Åland Maritime Museum the volunteers provide the tall ship Pommern with sails and traditional sailor’s crafts. Through their work they actively preserve Åland’s maritime cultural heritage and the knowledge of how to take care of a sailing vessel. Onboard the Pommern the enthusiasts of Tvärstyckarna, an association of passionate volunteers demonstrate how to work the Pommern’s ignition ball engine, and in the Maritime Museum you can see them twice a week a working the triple expansion engine.

Don’t miss Jan Karlsgårdens open-air museum’s craft days when the invited artisans demonstrate traditional crafts on Wednesdays in July between 11 am & 3 pm.

JEWELLERY WORKSHOP IN THE MARITIME QUARTER

The goldsmiths at Guldviva get the inspiration for their handcrafted silver and gold jewellery from Åland archipelago nature and culture.

The shop at Maritime Quarter is like a small jewellery box filled with necklaces, rings, earrings and bracelets. Last year, Guldviva’s ring EVA won the Finland’s Most Beautiful Ring of the Year Award. The EVA collection presents classic romantic style with a slightly unexpected motif; potato and its beautiful leaves.

ARTS & CRAFTS GALLERY

The arts & crafts association Ålands Slöjd & Konsthantverk runs its gallery upstairs of Viktor Craft & Design. See www.konsthantverk.ax for upcoming exhibitions, and www.viligt.ax for information about the local artisans.

GLASS AND CRAFTS IN ECKERÖ

This year the annual arts & crafts summer exhibition at Eckerö Post and Customs House consists of three separate exhibitions. The newly renovated interiors on the first floor display an exhibition about the history of the building, customs and postal services. Additionally there is the exhibition “Glass”, with designed and hand-blown glass by Åland artists and others with an Åland connection. Creative recycling and quality crafts

Vintage, second hand, pre-loved, reused and recycled – all these can be combined with arts and crafts and Åland creativity!

Viktor Craft & Design on the pedestrian street in Mariehamn is a charming boutique to discover.

Here you will find a nice mix of arts and crafts, design, second hand and recycled along with other selected and beautiful items. The store is named after Viktor Eriksson, who built the wooden house at the turn of the last century. Viktor’s unique crafts boutique showcases crafts and selected design by designer Linda Karlsson, textile artisan Inger Nygård and silversmith Annika Åkerfelt. After the shopping you can enjoy a coffee break, or a tasty lunch, at Café Viktor where you can also choose between sweet or salty treats or hearty portions of food made from local ingredients.

SECOND HAND

Shopping sustainably is really anything but boring. Remember to take a small dose of patience and go for an exciting treasure hunt where the reward is to find unique objects. Or make it easy for yourself and visit Patina at Norragatan 1, where the entire store is filled with antique, vintage and retro style items. More nice and useful things can be founded at Emmaus Åland second-hand shops in Mariehamn, Norrböle and Godby.

Find Åland’s many flea markets by joining the Facebook Group ”Loppisar På Åland”. Flea markets at Nybonds in Krogstad and Önningeby Art Museum are popular in the summer.

Creative ideas in a ceramics studio

During the 1980s, ceramics and pottery gained in popularity thanks to many ceramists who had moved to Åland. Some of them are still active and welcome visitors to their studios, and there is a new generation coming up!

“It feels good to be a part of people’s everyday lives” says potter Judy Kuitunen about her functional ceramics and utensils. You will find her ceramics and art in the beautiful old slaughterhouse in Gölby, open in July.

In Hammarland countryside, Siv and Simon Linney at Lugnet Keramik welcome visitors to their ceramics studio in summertime. Lugnets’ stoneware items, and ceramics by Maj Branders and Mia Englund, can also sold at SALT in the Maritime Quarter. Mia Englund runs her studio and shop at Smakbyn where you can buy her design ceramics as well as make your own pottery. If you are curious about ceramics,

you can book Mia’s ceramics classes or try the pottery wheel at her drop-in classes during the year.

MORE POTTERY

Also Viktor Crafts & Design presents ceramics. Kastanj Formgivning has delightful utility ceramics and interior details, including a flower pot shaped as imaginative face with ears and ring in the nose and the plant itself as the hair. There is also a lot of plain everyday ceramics, such as bowls with spouts, jugs and pots.

Selected ceramics are also available in the museum shop at the Åland Museum of Cultural History. JUDYS CERAMICS & ART www.judys.ax |LUGNET KERAMIK, MIA ENGLUND OCH KASTANJ FORMGIVNING see Facebook | MAJ BRANDERS www.branders.ax | ÅLANDS MUSEUM www.museum.ax |
