HISTORY OF SYRACUSE

he Syracuse/Wawasee area is a developing and everchanging community that blends a progressive, diverse economy with country charm and mid-western friendliness. It has also been a destination for visitors for generations due to our beautiful lakes, including Wawasee, the largest natural lake in Indiana. With Wawaseeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s waterway connection to Syracuse Lake there are more than 3,500 acres of water for year round recreation. Syracuse is a small rural town of approximately 3,000 year-round residents, increasing in the summer months to around 20,000 due to the part-time lake residents. Syracuse offers a high standard of living, which includes desirable housing, warm neighborhoods, a strong commitment to schools, a low crime rate, easy access to Fort

Wayne or Chicago and a large employment base. Syracuse is known for its narrow tree-lined streets both in the commercial and

residential areas and is proud to be a Tree City USA. Downtown Syracuse is composed of historic and distinct architectural brick buildings that line Main Street that have been home to a variety of businesses since the town of Syracuse was laid out in 1837. Our rural lakeside tourism destination has a lot to offer people of all ages including The Lakeland Youth Center, the Syracuse Community Center, several childcare options, a modern nursing home for senior citizens, several physicians and an urgent care center. There are also several banks in town, and more than half of the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 25 restaurants are locally owned. There are many activities in Syracuse thanks to the lakes, golf courses and parks.

EXPERIENCE THE CULTURE WAWASEE AREA CONSERVANCY FOUNDATION (WACF) The Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation a 501(c)3 not-forprofit organization was created in 1991 to protect, preserve and enhance the Wawasee Area Watershed for present and future

generations. The WACF works to anticipate, search out and resolve threats to the watershed and water quality. The primary mission is to preserve and enhance the water quality on the Wawasee Area Watershed Ecosystem which includes Lake Wawasee, Syracuse Lake, Bonar Lake, Papakeechie Lake and the ten lakes in the Upper Turkey Creek sub-watershed. Now in their 25th year, their efforts have resulted in the acquisition and protection of over 10 miles of shoreline and 47 wetland areas totaling over 828 acres. The WACF is dedicated to promoting education programs because so many of the threats to our watershed can be traced to human actions. Lakes and Wetlands Education Center which is located one mile south of town on SR 13. The “center” includes 40 acres of wetlands, woods and lakeshore and has over two and one-half miles of walking and hiking trails. The Ruddell Pavilion hosts “Lake Talk and Eats” the first Saturday of June, July and August. June 4th 9 am– Native Plants, Healthy Shorelines, Rain & Butterfly Gardens; July 2nd 9am – ANNUAL BUG CATCH!; August 6th 11 am – 1pm – WACF Lillypad Luncheon Cruise. WACF Canoe Trips provide a unique view of our watershed and a first class wetlands education on Friday mornings at 7:30 beginning in mid-June throughout the summer. New this year will be a Summer Wetland Adventure from 911:30 am each Thursday in July. Parents and children will see how wetlands protect our lakes through a variety of activities. SYRACUSE-WAWASEE MUSEUM

Located inside the Syracuse Community Center across from Lakeside Park, the SyracuseWawasee Historical Museum has been offering a glimpse back into Syracuse’s history since 1987. It was founded with funds gained from the Syracuse Sesquicentennial Celebration and occupied a room in the Syracuse Public Library until June 2002 when it moved to its current location. The museum’s main attractions are the 1905 Mier car designed by local resident Sheldon Harkless, and a collection of Native American artifacts found in surrounding fields. Whether you’re a current resident, a new addition to Syracuse or just returning to the lake for the summer, the Syracuse Public Library is a wonderful community resource for all of your information needs. The library has a full range of materials to choose from: large print section, periodical section, audio book section, DVD section, as well as many volumes of reference materials, in addition to fiction and non-fiction selections (for children, adults and young adults). There is a local history section with volumes outlining the history of Kosciusko County and Indiana history. The microfilm collection includes local newspapers dating from 1875 through 2004; physical copies of local newspapers are kept in the library for five years after the publication date. Henry Ward Park – Henry Ward Park is named for one of the cofounders of Syracuse, Henry Ward, who was the first Postmaster in Syracuse and an Associate Judge in Kosciusko County. Henry Ward Park has experienced many updates since 1992, including the addition of a boardwalk, fishing pier and a recently updated playground. It is a popular fishing spot, hosting many Bass Fishing Tournaments throughout the spring-fall months. The park is conveniently located adjacent to the public access site for Syracuse Lake for easy access to put in and take out boats. The park has a pavilion with a charcoal grill, restrooms, a fishing pier, playground equipment for the kids and has plenty of shade during the hot summer months.

Veteran’s Memorial Park – Shaded by mature canopy trees and lying along State Road 13, which runs through the heart of Syracuse, Veteran's Memorial Park at Crosson Mill has a historical theme with a cannon and a Veteran's Memorial, including names of those individuals from the Syracuse area who have served in the Armed Forces. Veteran's Memorial Park at Crosson Mill is also the site of the Laudeman Family Pavilion and Playground which was constructed in 2008. The pavilion is available for lunches, birthday parties, or other special events and has restrooms attached. The Veteran’s Memorial and clock serve as a reminder to honor the service men and women in our area.

Harold Schrock Athletic Complex – Located at 900 W. There are several activities and events occurring on and off the lakes throughout the entire year. July is a very busy time of the year for our small community! The week of July 4th kicks off with “Art Blast”, the last Saturday in June. The two weeks surrounding the 4th of July are always full of events, from a 5k run, to Flotilla (boat parade), Tour des Lakes Bike Ride and of course lots of Fireworks! During the winter months, residents and visitors may enjoy ice skating, snowmobiling, skiing, snow kiting, ice boating and ice fishing…just to name a few. In January, Syracuse hosts the Annual Winter Carnival highlighting the snowmobile drag races on Syracuse Lake along with other family activities.

Throughout the year, the chamber offers programs, promotions and events to strengthen its members. The Annual Chamber Awards Banquet recognizes the accomplishments from the previous year of its local businesses and organizations. The Syracuse Cruise In & Car Show has been taking place in our community for over 25 years! This two-day event draws visitors from far and wide. A family-fun event!!! As most chambers do, the SW Chamber hosts its annual Golf Outing each June. This event is a great time of golf, networking, fun and more!
