KIERA (Athletics) I love the movie "Divergent" for its riveting narrative and compelling characters. The dystopian world, divided by factions based on personality traits, provides a unique backdrop for the protagonist, Four, as he guides the identity and self-discovery of other ‘divergents’. The film explores courage, individuality, and societal conformity offering thought-provoking commentary on human nature. Theo James' portrayal of Tobias Eaton was pivotal as he skillfully conveyed the character's enigmatic strength, vulnerability, and complex internal struggles, adding depth to the narrative and enhancing the emotional resonance of the film. The movie is more than just a thrilling adventure featuring a stunning protagonist but a reflection on the complexity of human choices and the pursuit of one's true self.
ANNIE (Arts)
Every once in a while, having something sweet is the best way to relax from all the schoolwork. I loooooove going down the drive with my friends during lunch recess just to chill, and if you go to Safeway, Maynards are the best option. Personally, I'm a gummy person. The different varieties of gummies with different flavours are the number one choice to balance the tiring school work. The different types of candy ranging from Fuzzy Peaches to Sour Patch "children" boost my energy every time I’m feeling tired. The chewy gummy mixed with the sour, sugary powder adds a little extra something to the treat. If you've never tried it and would like to, go buy yourself a pack and enjoy the day!
CALEB (Action & Wellness) Stargazing is extremely underrated! Early this summer, I went on a trip with some of my friends to Thetis Island, about an hour's drive from Victoria. When it was about midnight, one of my friends suggested that we go outside to go swimming and hang out on the dock. Despite how cold it was, I brought a hoodie and a blanket and we started walking down to the dock. On our way there, one of my friends had to tie her shoe so we stopped. Astonished at how dark it was, I looked up at the sky and was amazed by how clear the stars were. Being on a remote island, the amount of light pollution was significantly lower than in the city and I had never seen such clear skies. It was a truly unforgettable moment and I would encourage you someday to get away from the city to see the stars.
IZZY (Sustainability)
Trust me by saying that Nando’s is the best restaurant of all time. This South African and Portuguese multinational food chain has it all. The chicken is absolutely legendary. Marinated in a 24-hour peri peri sauce made of crushed chiles, lemon, pepper and garlic are incredible. You definitely should stop by and give Nando’s a try at Metrotown or Downtown on Davie Street. Trust me their food is on another level compared to your local McDonald's or Cactus Club. From their famous peri peri chips to their flame-grilled chicken, they never disappoint for dinner after a hard day's work at school.
ARIA (Athletics) Kit Kats are my favourite chocolate bar they offer a perfect blend of textures and flavours. Their signature crispy wafer layers within in creamy milk chocolate, create a delicious crunch with every bite. The convenience of their individual bars makes them easy to enjoy and share, Kit Kats also come in various delightful flavors, classic, matcha, strawberry, and more—adding excitement to the experience. Have a break, have a KitKat!
GISELE (Innovation & Academics) "And it's lights out and away we go!" During the weekends, instead of going out, I stay in and watch F1. Formula 1 is an exciting race season, taking the span of 10 months and 23 races each year. 20 drivers in 10 teams travel around the world, from Canada, Australia, Italy, Japan, and more. The races all happen during the weekend, so don’t worry about missing one. If you already have F1 TV, honestly, it’s amazing because it gives you a different perspective on watching the races and each individual driver, but there are also free websites; I personally love Sportsurge. Overall, Formula 1 is a great way to destress and get into a new form of racing, and everyone should watch it.

POPPY (Arts) "What's old is Nu again" you could say about Adidas and their recent collaboration with the 90s metal band, Korn! Released in late October, this collection includes a myriad of pieces alluding to the band's 1996 album, 'Life Is Peachy'. From remodelling pre-existing Adidas shoes to match the nu-metal aesthetic, to a sparkly, purple tracksuit inspired by singer John Davis's wardrobe at the height of Korn's popularity, this long-awaited partnership has gained massive traction amongst metalheads and Adidas enthusiasts alike. I highly recommend checking out this awesome collaboration if you ever get the chance!
AVA (Innovation & Academics) Yasma: Looking for dining options in the Coal Harbour area? I highly recommend this Syrian Lebanese restaurant with a big waterfront patio. It offers a variety of homemade dishes, from charcoal-grilled kababs to hummus, using only three ingredients, to the refreshing Fattoush salad with over 15 items, including tomatoes, pita chips and cucumber. My absolute favourite is Shish Tawouk, chicken breast marinated in yoghurt and cooked over a charcoal fire, charred tomatoes and an addictive garlic sauce. Overall, it is a wonderful experience!
TRISTAN (Sustainability) When the spring months roll around I will again be reminded of why biking is one of my favourite activities. Biking ushers in a different kind of experience; I play ultimate and do cross country but when I hit the trails or go along the seawall, I get to focus just on the ride. It is like unlocking a world of outdoor excitement whether tearing through the streets or going through hidden trails, biking is something you can do with your friends or on your own. Biking isn't only a great pastime but also how I often get to school. Consider getting a bike so you can participate in great escapades! Or if you already have one, think about going on a long bike ride to enjoy the city. Stanley Park is a great first destination :)

“Inamorata” Mareux -> October 18. 2018

Best known for the 2021 social media hit, “The Perfect Girl”, Mareux’s entire discography is filled to the brim with hauntingly melodic tracks. Easily one of the most underrated songs of his is the 2018 single “Inamorata”. Titled after an old Italian term for one’s female lover, this song follows an eerie bassline which is accompanied by Mareux’s voice hidden beneath layers of synths and drums. If you’re enjoying the days growing darker, the air crisper, and the seasons spookier, then you should give Mareux’s “Inamorata” a listen!
From the band Horror Vacui, named after an artistic concept of fearing empty spaces, comes the track “Lost”, released in May 2020 alongside their album, ‘Living For Nothing’. Despite this song being only 3 years old, “Lost” sounds more like something straight out of the late 70s Gothic music genre with the track’s atmosphere sending chills down your spine as you listen. A major reason why I love Goth so much is that the genre never forgets its roots. Horror Vacui’s “Lost” work is a testament to such, recreating early Horror Vacui -> May 1. 2020 Goth’s unique musical layering and sound.
“Shallow Then Halo” Cocteau Twins -> July 9. 1982

“WHAT IS SHE SAYING!?” is always the first thought to come to mind whenever I listen to the Cocteau Twins. Fronted by lead singer Elizabeth Fraser, the song “Shallow Than Halo” is one of their darker tracks pertaining to melodic content. You likely know them for “Sea, Swallow Me” - a sombre tune about Fraser’s want to escape everyday life. And although “Shallow Then Halo” sounds darker and more intense in comparison, I believe this track shows the incredible range the Cocteau Twins have across their discography.
Forming in 2017, Orange County band, Shrouds, are criminally underrated with fewer than 1,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. Following a Deathrock-based sound similar to heavy hitters who came before, such as Christian Death, off of Shrouds’ newest album is the song “Circles”. Like Horror Vacui, Shrouds upholds the sonic traditions of the Goth musical crowd. Driven by singer Ana Thema’s piercing vocals, “Circles” is an incredible opener to their debut album, "Circles" ‘Grimoire’. Performing show after show on their Shrouds -> April 7. 2023 home state, the future looks bright for Shrouds.
“Normalized” Vision Video -> August 15. 2023
In the midst of their summer tour, American band, Vision Video, released one of the singles confirmed to be on their upcoming album, “Normalized”. Fronted by singer and guitarist, Dusty (aka ‘Goth Dad’), since the 2020 dual single release of “In My Side” and “Inked in Red”, Vision Video has been causing quite the commotion in the American Gothic scene. This newest single covers themes of capitalismfueled selfishness. And as many continue to fall victim to the systems put in place decades ago, “Normalized” acts as a wake-up call.
I can say confidently that most people who’ve listened to the Weeknd have heard bits and pieces of Siouxsie and the Banshees’ 1980 track “Happy House”. Don’t believe me? Go listen to “House of Ballons / Glass Table Girls”, then this song by the mother of Goth herself. Her music being sampled by contemporary worldrenowned musicians only solidifies Siouxsie Sioux’s legacy as a musical legend. Easily one of the most recognizable bands to come out of Goth, Siouxsie and the Banshees are known for “Happy House” their rebellious sound and pushing societal expectations. If you recognize the sample, why Siouxsie and the Banshees -> August 1. 1980 not give the original song a chance?

Makeup by Darby P. (10) Photos & Article by Poppy P. (12) At a school where uniform and societal conformity are the basis of everything, it's rare that makeup is used to promote individuality. This article is an interview with my sister, who, for the past 6 years behind a locked bathroom door, has been hard at work perfecting her craft. When asked about her work, this is what she said. What was the spark that inspired you to get into makeup? "I’m actually not sure what inspired me. It wasn’t a James Charles thing. I just think it was not being able to draw, but still wanting to create personal art. People think that I’d be good at drawing, but the reality is I just like using my face as a canvas because it’s a lot more of a journey if you will… and it’s more fun. It wasn’t James Charles. I mean he was cool, but he wasn’t my number one. It was just a need for personal expression, and I’m not a paper-and-pen kind of girly. I find a lot of my inspiration comes from what’s in trend at the time - for example, I don’t do a lot of smokey-eye looks anymore, and I tend to focus on line work/ detail now. So I would say, my inspiration changes with the times and my skill level." If you could give your 9-year-old self any piece of advice regarding the makeup realm, what would it be? "It wouldn’t be “stop doing rainbow eyebrows”… honestly, I’d still do those. I think this goes for anybody doing makeup; focus more on using makeup to enhance features rather than to cover others, and just have fun. Instead of drawing eyebrows, try to figure out a way to use your own and enhance them in a way that makes you feel good. You don’t need to overline your lips maybe just figure out the shapes of your face and see what works, and this comes with time and experience. You don’t have to look like Kylie Jenner." Makeup is an art form, and just like all art, coming up with unique ideas is difficult. How do you generate ideas for each look? "I like to look at my social feeds and save what I want to do. I would love to be able to come up with entirely unique ideas, but school is very draining *wheeze*, I have a lot on my plate, so I don’t have time to let the creative juices flow - I kind of just look at stuff others have posted whilst putting my own spin on it. Or I try to find people who are very skilled and attempt to copy their work to test my skills against theirs. I’m competitive like that."

If you could skip a stage in learning how to do makeup, which would it be? "How to work with your eye shape." Why? "Because even now, doing a simple eyeliner is really tricky despite how easy it looks. You see people do it, and you think “Oh, you’re literally just drawing a line”, but your eyes aren’t the same shape - your face is lopsided. You also have a dominant hand, which makes it harder to do on one side than the other. It may look easy, but it takes a lot of skill. It would be so much better if you could just go *swoop, swoop* (motioning doing eyeliner)." What's one product you'd deem essential for each look? Which product(s) are your favourite? "The Sky-High Mascara by Maybelline is really good - and specifically, if you’re a blonde or brunette, I would most definitely recommend using brown mascara instead of black because it looks more natural on your eyes. I need a solid eyelash curler - mine’s from Daiso. I also really like the Rare Beauty blush, I have two because I like exploring what works with my face. I have a more pink-ish one, but then I also have an “I’m sunburnt”, orange one that my friend Chloe gifted me… but it’s from Seoul, so it might be hard to get. I’ve been preferring the orange one as the warmer months roll in. Fenty Beauty’s contour and bronzer are really good too; they’re a cruelty-free brand which is something I look for in my makeup products, leaning towards companies that align with my morals. Also, when companies tell you that your makeup has expired, don’t listen to them. I’m not a dermatologist, but I’ve had the same junk for 5 years that I still use, so… use stuff until you run out." What's a makeup trend you wish never happened? "Oh,… intense soap brows. That was really bad. I think brushing your eyebrows up is good, but cementing your brows to your forehead is not a great idea. It came out of the clean-girl era of makeup, which was fine, but soap brows took it a little too far. And also full coverage foundation. Sometimes people use it to cover up flaws such as acne, but I think that’s just a part of the human experience, and it can be beautiful if you let it. To be honest, I pick and choose which trends I follow based on my interests. For example, I don’t like cut-creases anymore. It feels too 2016 prom-esque now. It’s just a little heavy and I don’t like heavy makeup anymore." If you'd recommend one makeup influencer, who would it be? "Bruh, I don’t really know. I don’t follow any influencers in specific, besides Nikkie Tutorials. Finding and looking at small artists can be a lot more beneficial. I follow a lot of smaller artists and I find their work to be more original and inspirational in your learning phase. Don’t focus on the mainstream, think James Charles, Jeffree Starr, Tati Westbrook, etc because they’re all controversial figures, and I know there’s nothing wrong… actually there is something wrong with them. Listening to those people and giving them the attention and money they crave isn’t a great idea. So I say support small creators." Any closing remarks? "I think makeup is for everyone regardless of any identifying factors of a person. It’s a great way to express yourself and it’s always worth a shot to try something new. The journey of learning how to do makeup is intertwined with the journey of learning to love your lopsidedness… yourself, and the features you were born with."

Rain is the best weather! Not only does the rain help keep trees and grass green, but it also causes Petrichor, which is the smell of soil during the rain.
Hybrid Lillies are my favourite flower. This flower lasts longest in a vase than any other flower, and can range in colours red, orange, Yellow Violet and Pink (my favourite).

IN TUNE AUTUMN 2023 With so many streaming services and new music coming out every single day, it can become rather overwhelming and difficult to discover new music. For example, Spotify’s release radar only ever shows trending music (trust me, I check it almost every day), causing so many hidden gems to be lost in the growing ocean that is the music industry. Here to help is In Tune! This article includes three handpicked music recommendations for this fall and upcoming winter covering a wide range of genres for everyone. With one song, album, and artist recommendation, hopefully, your music discovery journey has been made less hectic with In Tune.
song: “Circle” - Slipknot You may be wondering, “Poppy, how is this about new music if you’re recommending a song released in 2004?”, to which I say, fair point. However, in light of recent events such as Slipknot being nominated for a Grammy, as well as just firing their second drummer, Jay Weinberg, they’ve been in the headlines of many metal tabloids as of late. The song “Circle” was released alongside their third studio album, ‘Vol.3: The Subliminal Verses’, 19 years ago. Discussing themes of resilience and breaking out of the cycle life can become, “Circle” is an easy listen for all, including those who don’t typically listen to metal. The melody and tempo are gentle, yet still hold strong in comparison to other tracks on the album such as “Don’t Get Close”. This track is a testament to Slipknot’s unique sound, displaying the sheer range and versatility the band has. Metal comes in all sounds, with “Circle” proving such.

artist: Blaque Dynamite Playing the drums since the age of 2, Mike Mitchell, whose stage name is Blaque Dynamite, has been consistently releasing high-quality work since his debut album, ‘Killing Bugs’, in 2017. Dipping his toes in a wide variety of genres and musical styles, Blaque Dynamite’s most recent release, his 2023 album, ‘Stop Calling Me’, displays his talent within the fusion realm. His sound is unlike anything I’ve heard before, incorporating elements of jazz, funk, and rock. Having previously performed on tour with the likes of Kamasi Washington, Spirit Fingers, and Stanley Clark, who is best known for being in one of the first-ever fusion-jazz bands, Blaque Dynamite’s work is criminally underrated, and I’d highly suggest giving him a listen.
album: ‘Last Splash’ - The Breeders Celebrating its 30th anniversary this past summer was The Breeders’s 1993 album, ‘Last Splash’. Fronted by Kim Deal, best known for her work in The Pixies, the band released a 2023 remaster of their most popular body of work. Including some of The Breeders’s top tracks such as “Cannonball”, the remaster introduces previously unreleased outtakes titled “Go Man Go” and “Divine Mascis”. These tracks come as a surprise not only to fans but the band themselves. When originally recording this album in San Fransisco, both of these songs were lost deep within the studio’s files. Despite such, the addition of these tracks with the remaster only solidifies The Breeders’s sound further, upholding the sonic themes of 90s alternative rock. If you enjoy ‘Last Splash’, I’d highly recommend taking a moment to check out their other works such as ‘Pod’ (1990) and ‘Title TK’ (2002). If you’re a fan of 90s rock, The Breeders are a mustlisten!

a e m r nut free d b ars With academic classes finally picking up speed since coming back from summer break, your friends at the Action and Wellness Council are here to help provide some fun ways to relax and de-stress! It is a stressful time for Stratford Hall students as we approach the end of term one and to cap off 2023, we wanted to share this wonderful vegan-friendly and nut-free dessert with all of you! Baking is an amazing activity for giving your mind a break from schoolwork and other stresses in life and can be enjoyed either alone or with friends.
Overall Prep Time: 25 minutes Freeze Time: 90 minutes Makes 20 small squares
The Sunflower Seed Butter (Can be replaced with almond or peanut butter if preferred): 1 cup(250mL) of either homemade or store bought sunflower seed butter ¼ cup plus ½ tea spoons(67mL) of pure maple syrup ¼ cup(60mL) virgin coconut oil, melted 1 teaspoon(5mL) pure vanilla extract 2 pinches of fine sea salt And Finally the Chocolate Coating: ¼ cup(60mL) hulled sunflower seeds ¾ cup(175mL) non-dairy chocolate chips or chopped chocolate 1 teaspoon(5mL) virgin coconut oil 25

The Crust: 1 tablespoon(15mL) virgin coconut oil,melted, while also leaving some of the pan 1 and ½ cups(375mL) crispy rice cereal 2 tablespoons (30mL) unsweetened cocoa powder 2 tablespoons and plus 1 ½ tablespoon of brown rice syrup(37.5mL)
1. Make the crust- Oil a large loaf pan( about 10-x 6 inches/3L) and then line it with a piece of parchment paper cut to fit the length of the pan 2. In a medium bowl, mix together the crust ingredients in the cereal and it is entirely coated. Then, spoon the mixture into the prepared loaf pan and spread it out evenly using the back of a spoon. This will be very sticky, do not worry because it is perfectly normal. With lightly wet hands, press the mixture down firmly and evenly into the pan. The crust mixture will seem very loose at this stage. Place in the freezer 3. In the meantime, make the filling 4. Rise and dry the bowl you used to make the crust. 5. In the bowl, combine all the filling ingredients and stir until combined; exhibiting a smooth texture 6. Remove the pan from the freezer( the crust should be firm) and spoon the filling on the top of the crust. Spread it out evenly with a spatula. Return the pan to a flat surface in the freezer for about 1 hour, or until the filling is firm. 7. Make the chocolate in a small skillet, toast the sunflower seeds over medium heat, stirring often for,22 3 to 5 minutes, until the seeds are lightly golden 8. Once the filling is firm, in the top of a double boiler melt the chocolate oil over low-medium heat, stirring frequently until smooth. Then turn off the heat. Spread the chocolate quickly on top of the filling. Immediately sprinkle on the toasted sunflower seeds before the chocolate sets. Return the pan to the freezer until the chocolate coating is solid, about 30 minutes 9. Run a knife around the edge of the pan to loosen it. The entire work's base is crafted from a cardboard cutout in the shape of a butterfly, with various "decorations" affixed to the cardboard using hot glue— everyday items commonly found in life. The white cloth flower, a central door key, a can of preservatives, (expired) small pills, pull tabs from soda cans, paperclips, stapler cores, sponges, twine, dental floss containers, disposable wooden chopsticks, popsicle sticks, twist ties, decorative ribbon from gifts, small beads, razor blades, straws, plastic circular tubing, and goose feather. Through the adjustment, combination, and arrangement of these materials, a butterfly is adorned with harmonious earthy and natural colors appeared. Most of the pieces in this artwork are made from recycled waste. Seeing butterflies fluttering outside the window, flying through the flowers, I also hope that this butterfly can return to nature with the resources humans take from it. This calls on everyone to contribute their efforts to nature conservation and waste recycling, just like the life's details on the butterfly.

Barbie was released on July 24th and was a summer hit movie. Barbie encapsulated the playful and colourful environment we imagine Barbies to live in as well as the joys and hardships of the real world. This movie contains heartfelt moments along with comedy and an amazing soundtrack that fit the vibe of the movie. The performances from the cast were perfect. All the way from Margot Robbie to being the perfect Barbie to Ryan Gosling bringing Ken to life with his comedic performance.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem was released Aug 2nd This Summer and was an immediate success with 96% rotten tomatoes. It is a hilarious action packed movie that follows the iconic turtle brothers in a new light. The animation in this film is absolutely stunning and integrates both 2D and 3D forms of animation which gives it a whole new look compared to other versions of it. Directed by Seth Rogan, this film is definitely one to put on your “To Watch“ list!
