October 2021 “Feels Like Home” Contents About the Cover Artist: Irene Sheri came into the world a painter, gifted with inherent love, and a natural eye for the beauty around her. At nine years old, Irene began her professional journey, and her talent has continued to break new ground with every new period of her artistic life. Over the years, her art has been featured in galleries in France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Russia, Finland, and the United States. Irene embraces divergent points in architecture, design, fashion, and everyday life. Irene’s art reflects the eclectic influences that she finds and balances them via composition and style. She layers renaissance rudiments with a current approach to textures, makes vintage details atypically modern, places realistic figures against abstract backgrounds, and sets lines free with unexpected color. She finds triptych – in its naturally balanced structure – the perfect format to juxtapose these motifs. Irene explains, “I aim to trigger a silent dialogue with my audience, to express a pure young female soul through eyes, perhaps fulfilling the age-old adage. In this, my paintings are intimate and personal, without ever being selfportraits.” Website: www.irenesheri.com Instagram: irene_sheri Facebook: Irene Sheri Vishnevskaya

from the Editor The space I can escape to that always feels like home is an elegantly shabby house that overlooks the marsh in Murrells Inlet. The property was purchased in 1920 by my grandfather’s great grandfather for a low price that would knock your flipflops off. Passed down for generations, the ownership shares of the house are split many ways, but this home we continue to uphold is what ties us all together and keeps us close. As a four-bedroom, three-bath, three-hammock home, there is plenty of space for relaxing and connecting with our nearest and dearest. It also contains three porches: the eating porch, the sitting porch, and my favorite, the sleeping porch. The eating porch includes a ten-foot wooden picnic table, and the sitting porch consists of rocking chairs. The sleeping porch is the only porch upstairs and when I was younger, it was full of army cots that were originally brought in to accommodate the growing army of grandchildren, who slept out there until air conditioning arrived in the 70s. Now, the sleeping porch contains an extra-large hammock swing and is the absolute best room of the house, especially when it rains. The other hammocks are located outside on the inlet side, which is the front of the home. One is under a large oak tree and the other is posted up on the deep-water dock, where we spend most of our time taking in the coastal ambiance. For generations, the kids have swung on the wisteria vines, jumped off the dock’s railing, caught and roasted crabs and oysters, and ran around in the pluff mud, just as my grandfather did with Roosevelt “Rooster” Pickett and Bubba Love. The house has had its fair share of renovations, but the unique features will never fade, and neither will the memories that have been made. It is a home full of games, photo albums, and vintage nautical items. If walls could talk, you would hear lots of laughter, highly entertaining family stories, and nothing but good dancing music. This house is named “King’s Krest” and it will always be the place that makes me feel most at home.

"SHE SAVED MY LIFE" Grand Strand resident Dawn R. had been experiencing the painful side effects of Peripheral Neuropathy, “my feet and legs were extremely painful and my doctor told me there was nothing they could do. That I would have to take Gabapentin for the rest of my life.” Then she met North Myrtle Beach's very own Dr. Tonya Weber.

Peripheral Neuropathy is the pain, discomfort and numbness caused by nerve damage of the peripheral nervous system. Dawn explained that daily tasks like opening doors and using the bathroom were overwhelmingly painful. “How can you live for the next 30 years when you don’t even want to get out of bed to do simple things?” She was experiencing the burning, numbness, tingling and sharp pains that those suffering with neuropathy often describe. “The way that I would describe it, it’s equivalent to walking on glass.” Dawn hadn’t worn socks in five years and was wearing shoes two sizes too big so that nothing would ‘touch’ her feet. Unfortunately Dawn’s story is all too familiar for the over 3 million people in the U.S. suffering from Peripheral Neuropathy.

If you’re unfortunate enough to be facing the same disheartening prognosis you’re not sleeping at night because of the burning in your feet. You have difficulty walking, shopping or doing any activity for more than 30 minutes because of the pain. You’re struggling with balance and living in fear that you might fall. Your doctor told you to ‘just live with the pain’ and you’re taking medications that aren’t working or have uncomfortable side effects. Fortunately, four months ago Dawn read an article about Dr. Tonya Weber and the work she was doing to treat those suffering from Peripheral Neuropathy

without invasive surgeries or medications.

If you’ve missed too many tee times because of pain or you’ve passed on dancing the shag down on Main Street because you’re afraid of falling, it’s time to call Dr. Weber and the staff at AIM.

Dr. Weber, founder of AIM | Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine in North Myrtle Beach, is using the time tested science It’s time you let your golden of Acupuncture and a technology originally developed years BE GOLDEN! by NASA that assists in increasing blood flow and expediting Dr. Weber is once again recovery and healing to treat this accepting new patients. I don’t have that burning sensation. As far as I’m concerned Dr. Weber saved my life!”

Dr. Weber has been helping the senior community for over 18 years using the most cutting edge and innovative integrative medicine. Specializing in chronic pain cases, specifically those that have been deemed ‘hopeless’ or ‘untreatable’, she consistently generates unparalleled results. What was once a missing link in senior healthcare is now easily accessible to the residents of North Myrtle Beach.

Gets Personal with

Ginny Lassiter:

Sunset River Marketplace “A house is a home when it incorporates things or elements that the family loves. It should be a reflection of the personalities of its inhabitants.” In 1977, Ginny moved to this area as a single mother to be close to her family. In 2002, Sunset River Marketplace was opened by Ginny and her husband as a venue for local artists to display their works. Being an artist herself, Ginny’s primary medium is acrylic, and her work is mostly abstract. She also enjoys printmaking and working in clay. Because Ginny’s degree was in art with a focus in interior design, and she worked in interior design for a few years early in her career, her home has been primarily her own design. Her husband also has very good taste, so they usually agree on things they are doing or purchasing. Ginny always has an eye out for new ideas, especially new art and décor. Ginny’s home reflects “real life” living as well as warmth and welcome for family and friends. When it comes to personal style, Ginny’s is definitely eclectic. All of the art in her home is original and the décor are pieces that she and her husband have collected over the years. She has some family antiques as well as some purchased, and she likes to mix antique and contemporary pieces. She also has a few “shabby” pieces, but all are things that they love. At the top of her stairs: you will find a stained glass window that came from the First Methodist Church in Wilson, North Carolina, which Ginny attended as a child. The glass cross on the left was handblown by Ginny’s son, Scott Summerfield who lives and has his studio in Bakersville, North Carolina, with his wife, clay artist Liz Zlot Summerfield. In the living room: the cozy reading nook includes chairs that once belonged to both Ginny’s and Joe’s grandmothers. Ginny’s art and design are often driven by sentimentality. Ginny’s collection of North Carolina pottery is always on display in her kitchen. Ginny designed and created the tiles above the cooktop. In fact, one of the reasons she wanted a pottery studio at the gallery (Sunset River Marketplace) was so she could make her own kitchen tiles. 12 :: Sasee.com :: October 2021

Ginny has two favorite rooms. One is her formal dining room which is a mix of antiques and contemporary furniture. Her dining table is glass top on a wrought iron base along with dining chairs that were her grandmother’s. She has a pottery collection that she displays alongside some crystal and silver pieces. Her other favorite room is the kitchen which is truly the heart of the home as they say. A few years ago, they added windows across the water side of the house so when she is in the kitchen, she has a water view and the bar stools for the island also face the water. Through her art gallery, Sunset River Marketplace, they have been involved in the community through hosting events that benefit organizations such as The Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Hope Harbor Home shelter for women. For several years, they hosted a black-tie event for the Brunswick County Arts Council as a fund-raiser. They have hosted charity fashion shows and luncheons, created and designed a cookbook in which 100 percent of the proceeds went to an individual Hospice patient, and the gallery is a member of the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce. Ginny has personally served on the Board of Trustees for the Museum of Coastal Carolina, the Ingram Planetarium, and the Brunswick County Arts Council. She has loved teaching two abstract painting workshops for the Waterway Art Association and judging local art shows. Ginny loves to laugh and have fun with her friends and staff, and she loves music and likes to dance (their own version of the “shag” with her husband Joe). “Make yourselves at home” is what Ginny hopes to impart.

Going Home Again by Jeffery Cohen

In the 1950s, developers were building row after row of cute little houses to meet the needs of returning soldiers who were anxious to begin a new life and start a family. My folks were part of a new wave leaving the city to move out to the suburbs and so they decided to buy a brand-new house. So brand-new, that when we moved in, streets weren’t even completed. Roads of gravel were laid down with plans of being paved in the future. As a four-year-old, I remember sitting at the window for hours, watching bulldozers level mountains of red clay into what would one day be lawns and backyards. This was the place I called home.

posters of James Dean and Marlon Brandon that hung on those walls.

It was a place I’d spend most of my young years. A place where I learned about life and love and family. A place that I would return to, even after I had gone out on my own - for holidays, birthdays, and visits. It was a place I could always count on to be there when I needed it. If I wasn’t feeling well, if I had a problem that needed solving, if I just needed somewhere to retreat to, I was always welcome to come home. And so, it went on for years until my parents passed away. As hard as it was, my brothers and I decided that we had to pass on “our home” to new owners.

The kitchen had been redone with nifty new cabinets and modern appliances but somehow, I could still smell the past’s sweet aroma of cinnamon from the freshly baked apple pies my mom put out to cool. I still heard the crackling oil as she dropped doughy donuts into a gurgling pot. I could see her smiling as she brushed the flour off her apron.

For me, parting with the house that was so much a part of my life was not easy. After it was sold, I found myself driving by every so often, curious to see if the old homestead had changed. With every new paint job, each time a tree was cut down or a new door added, sadly, it moved me another step away from home, and so my trips became less and less until I finally stopped coming around. Years had passed when I happened to be in the neighborhood and decided to drive by the old place. To my surprise, there was a “for sale” sign on the lawn. Curiosity got the best of me, and I made an appointment to look at the house. I can’t tell you how strange it felt, walking into the front door of what was once “my house” after almost thirty years. I expected that there might be some rearranging, but I was floored by the changes. Walls were torn down, ceilings lowered, a hidden, dusty old staircase was now exposed leading to an entire floor of new rooms where the unfinished attic used to be. I stared at the closet door in the new family room, once covered in decals of my favorite baseball teams. I remembered the desk that I’d spent hours at preparing for college. I thought about the 14 :: Sasee.com :: October 2021

As I walked through the living room, I recalled all of the decorated Christmas trees that stood there over the years and the dozens of colored eggs hidden on Easter mornings. I remembered the night of my prom. My mother snapping pictures with her Brownie camera as I, in my rented tuxedo, struck my best James Bond pose next to the girl that I was certain was the love of my life. I wondered whatever became of that girl.

I peeked into the bedrooms remembering days of my brothers and I scampering to every corner playing hide-andseek or tag. The sound of children’s laughter, the barking of pet dogs, a transistor radio playing rock-and-roll, my mother singing along, the blaring of the ballgame that my father was watching on TV - it all rang in my head, and for one brief moment... I was home again. I thanked the real estate agent for her time and walked down the cement and flagstone sidewalk that my Dad put in so many years ago. One last look, then I drove off. Thomas Wolfe said you can’t go home again. He was wrong. You can go home again... as long as you have memories to bring with you.

Fine Art, Redefined by Kaitee Floyd

Cheryl Newby G A L L E R Y

For nearly 40 years, Cheryl Newby Gallery has established a reputation for quality. The 2,000-square-foot space represents 19 nationally and regionally recognized artists from the Carolinas, Virginia, Georgia, Florida, New York, California, Colorado, Connecticut, and Wyoming, whose works vary in style, and range from pure abstract to representational. The list includes painters, sculptors, and one ceramic artist. While showcasing a variety of artists, it is so important to give each work enough space so the customer can appreciate the art better and visualize how the art will look in their home. The gallery is under new ownership, Murrells Inlet native, Kaitee Floyd, who acquired the gallery from the recently retired, Cheryl Newby. Floyd plans to maintain the core values of the gallery with her own “added flair.” While having acquired many loyal patrons, both private and corporate, this gallery continuously welcomes and enjoys assisting the novice collector.

Designing beautiful homes or individual rooms right down to every detail is what our Interior Design team here at Coastal Luxe Interiors does every day. Our team listens to what our client or builder wants by hearing their wishes, wants, and needs; providing them with a vision of their project, and turning their dream into reality. A completed Master Suite project is shown where we incorporated layers of materials and fabrics to create a modern, yet coastal feel; the navy, cream, white, and chocolate in the floral pattern was an inspiration for the entire room. Incorporating a chevron wallpaper for a touch of a geometric pattern as the main backdrop, while layering in a crisp white foundation of bed linens to contrast the in-house fabricated custom bed scarf and pillow shams; all of which are reversible with detailed beading that matches the custom drapery flanking the windows. The finishing details selected were a golden brass finish for all hardware and lighting fixtures to balance the details and give it a wow factor!

Timeless Comfortable Luxury

Man Cave on the Farm

by Marva Williams, Owner When we were approached about transforming this 30 x 32 garage into a TV/game room, the clients had a few must-haves on their list. We needed to accommodate a regulation-size pool table, determine the location of a 70” TV, incorporate 3 generations of family heirlooms, and raise the floor level approximately 3-4 feet to meet the same height as the adjoining room. Reclaimed pine from an older vacant 1900’s vintage home was used as custom chair rail, wainscoting, and the wood surrounding where the TV is hung. New windows, recessed lighting, sheetrock, and LVP flooring were installed. A salvaged beer light was custom painted by a local artist to reflect scenes from the farm and hangs majestically above the pool table. A soothing paint color, custom window treatments, and repurposed furniture create the perfect man cave where family and guests enjoy their favorite ball game or TV western.

It’s All About the Lines in this Sleek Modern Bathroom! Our team worked with a local builder, Charles Fox Homes, to select materials that would complement their design by providing stunning accents as seen in the decorative mosaic wall of the shower. This bold, oversized insert features Circles Trumpet Turquoise Mosaic by Artistic Tile and is perfectly paired with a high gloss white subway 5x12 tile which wraps the walls floor to ceiling as well as the bench. A neutral floor tile is given a punch of color with a Lunada Bay Agate glass tile in a brick pattern cut in strips to run parallel to the vanity cabinets outside the shower and covers the entire shower floor to further balance the stark whites and blues that envelope this room. Projects such as this truly highlight how we can balance unique materials and installation techniques with the right blend of traditional style to create something dynamic in any space.

Layered shades offer a modern take on light control with their alternating sheer and opaque fabrics. The elegant, woven fabric blocks harmful UV rays from your interiors. You can adjust the vane alignment to fine-tune light control or to raise the shade. The shades raise completely for a perfectly open view. There are two options for this shade: Continuous-Loop LiftSmooth operation with a consistent cord length which is a great option for larger windows that see heavy use, and Motorized Lift which is a safe alternative to cords with easy operation at the touch of a button and is perfect for hard-to-reach or large shades.

Luxury and Durability

by Justin Dedio, Owner/Vice President This kitchen was done on a new construction waterfront home. We classify it as a “luxury custom” kitchen because of its high end custom cabinetry, built-in commercial appliances (Notice the concealed dishwasher to the right of the farmhouse sink!), and custom details throughout. The island has a 3” thick mitered edge quartz countertop, and the floors are large format porcelain plank tiles for durability at the beach!

Buying a First Home Over the Internet by Erika Hoffman

“You’re going to make an offer on a house you’ve never seen?” asked my husband incredulously. “We don’t want to move into an apartment with a second child arriving in the fall.” “Your dad and I’ve never bought a home without viewing it a few times.” My expectant daughter, her husband, and their two-yearold needed to relocate from Boston, Massachusetts to Ann Arbor, Michigan in the summer of 2020, the summer of the pandemic, and real estate agents in Michigan weren’t allowed to show houses. Her husband stayed behind to pack their belongings and finish his fellowship while she and their son sheltered-in-place with us in North Carolina, for three months. Over the phone, her husband talked about financing, mortgages, interest, and several houses they’d seen pictures of. “Why is the owner leaving?” my husband queried and shook his head. “Always ask that.” After perusing several houses via pictures sent on Zillow or watching videos produced on agents’ wobbly cell phones, we started to get an idea of houses in a city where we’d never been. In fact, I’d ridden through Michigan only once, as a kid on a road trip from the East Coast. “Those prices sound mighty high,” my husband remarked to my daughter. “You want to buy a house with the idea of flipping it in a couple of years? Huh? That doesn’t sound good to me!” I offered my opinion. “You two aren’t handymen.” “By then, we’ll have a better idea of where we want to live and the schools,” my daughter offered.

a little purchase to return if you have buyer’s remorse. During 43 years of marriage, my husband and I have lived in three homes, and we deliberated on each for months and sometimes years. “We got to buy before mid-July. It’s May now. Moe begins his program and needs a place to live,” stated Heather. Each night, she’d study houses on the internet, and sometimes wouldn’t consult us. Then, one day she thought they’d found one, but it was more expensive than others they’d looked at. “Show me the pictures,” I said. She took me to the website and pointed at the sloped yard. “Not much room for kids to play. A drawback,” she said. “Michigan is cold. They’ve two seasons: winter and orange cone season.” She didn’t laugh, but I continued, “You want to concentrate on the inside, not the outdoors.” I felt surprised at myself because the yard of a home has always been important to me. The first picture she showed me– a fireplace with a huge stone wall the length of the room. “Nice,” I muttered. The next picture of the bay window in the living room elicited a remark from me, “I love bay windows!” Next, I saw a roomy dining room and a bright kitchen with sliding doors to a deck with black railing. The following photo was of a large laundry room and a small studio where the owner taught piano lessons. Upstairs were four bedrooms, decent sizes, and two small bathrooms. Then, I saw a huge basement with old carpet. “What do you think?” she asked.

“You can move later,” I suggested. “You’ll be miserable in some house you plan on renting out in the future to others. You need a home for your family.”

“It doesn’t matter what I think. It matters what you and your husband think.”

“This place is near downtown, with sidewalks,” my daughter pointed at the pictures on Zillow.

“That wall-to-wall carpet in the bedrooms and basement I don’t like.”

“Look at that price tag!” I exclaimed. “Too much.”

“You can tear that up; replace it, in the future.”

“Ann Arbor’s expensive. We’d have to share a driveway with a neighbor,” my daughter responded nonchalantly.

“The bathrooms are so tiny,” she whined.

“No way, Honey! You’ll have small children. The neighbors could have big trucks. Much too dangerous.” I knew I shouldn’t be giving unsolicited advice, but this wasn’t 64 :: Sasee.com :: October 2021

“That’s how they were in older homes. My parents’ home. Your dad’s parents’ home.” “I’m not sure the house has much curb appeal.”

“You can change that,” I volunteered. The agent made a cell video with the elderly widow selling her house as she led him around, narrating and pointing out things in each room. “Adorable,” I said. “She’s proud of her house. You can tell she took good care of it.” My husband came in the study and perched over her shoulder; he studied the pictures and then said, “Buying from the original owner is good, better than from someone trying to flip it after a few minor renovations.” “We’d be pretty near to our neighbors here. Mom, you said you wouldn’t move to a house unless you checked out the neighbors first,” my daughter reminded me. “I’m sure they’re nice folks.” My husband spoke with our son-in-law who’s not lived in a house because he’s from a country where most folks live in urban apartments, so negotiations and house ownership are things he’s never dealt with. Yet, he caught on quickly to the idea of making an offer and being willing to walk away if it doesn’t suit the seller. “I can’t imagine buying a house one has never set foot in,” said my husband. “I like to smell a house. I like to touch a house. I can’t imagine buying one over the internet, either. But…” I added. “If you make an offer, you might own a house. You ready?” advised my husband. Moe made the offer. It was back and forth a little, and they got the house. Moe came down, picked up our daughter and grandson and off to Michigan they went. Four months later in November, we drove up, when their daughter was born. We’d seen the ultrasound picture, but that didn’t prepare us for the real deal. She’s a beautiful, bright, perfect wonder! I learned you can buy a home, sight unseen, over the internet, and it too can turn out to be beautiful, bright, and perfect … wonder. Miracles abound! Live and learn!

Erika Hoffman enjoys her home and is so thankful for it during 2020 when she and it spent a lot of time together!

“Dr. Sattele’s Weight Loss Program completely changed every aspect of my Life!” Start our Program today and lose 10, 20, even 30 pounds or more each month until you reach your goal weight!

Kevin M. Sattele, M.D.

My name is Caroline A., I am 23 years old and just finished graduate school at The University of South Carolina. Between grad school, work, and my social life, I am constantly busy and on the go! I have struggled with my weight my entire life and have never been completely satisfied with how I looked or felt. By the time I got to my senior year of college, I was extremely overweight and had completely lost the energy, motivation, and self-confidence I needed to live a happy and healthy life. I had tried other forms of “dieting” in the past such as weight watchers, whole 30, and other trends and fads but nothing seemed to work or had lasting results. Even several doctors thought something was wrong because I could not lose weight. I first became interested in Dr. Sattele’s program because I wanted to lose weight and keep it off in a healthy way, monitored by a physician. I lost a total of 92 pounds on this program. I attribute the effectiveness and easiness of this program to Dr. Sattele and his staff. I felt like everyone in the office genuinely had my best interest at heart and wanted me to succeed at the program. I was amazed that I could eat real food while simultaneously losing weight rapidly. Everyone at Dr. Sattele’s office was so supportive of my journey and was always there to encourage me and answer any questions I had. This program completely changed every aspect of my life. I did not realize how much my obesity was negatively impacting my mental and physical health, relationships, schoolwork, etc., until I started to lose weight. Within the first month of the program, I lost almost 20 lbs. and could already begin to realize that it was easier for me to get out of bed in the morning, I was thinking clearer, sleeping better, and I was able to be on my feet for longer. Most importantly, I was gaining back the self-confidence I had lost and found myself being able to enjoy my time with family and friends in a way that I had not in a long time.

Before

After

I absolutely, without a doubt, recommend this program to family and friends. Dr. Sattele and his staff changed my life and I could never thank them enough for giving me the energy and self-confidence that resulted from this program.
