Laboe by Cory Ellen Boberg

From the beach to the boardwalk this playful crop top will keep you cool. Laboe features fun stripes in a geometric chevron pattern and simple construction that will have this flying off the needles in time for tomorrow night’s beach bonfire. Negative ease through the bust and waist and customizable straps create a range of options to find your perfect beachready fit. Laboe is knit in pieces from the bottom up in a chevron stripe pattern. The pieces are blocked and seamed and then straps are picked up and worked from the body of the garment so they can be adjusted for fit. Choose a size with 7-10 in / 1825 cm of negative ease through the bust.

Batumi by Neisha Abdulla

From dockside to beachside Batumi will be your go-to accessory this summer. The feminine lace stitch pattern and scalloped edges bring to mind retro glamour and old Hollywood. Use Batumi as a wrap on chill summer evenings or wind it around your head and neck to channel your inner Grace Kelly while cruising the waves on your sailboat. Knit in a sumptuous blend of merino and cashmere, Batumi pairs lace knitting with luxury and will keep your needles clicking all summer long. Beginning with a provisional cast on, each half of this stole is knit separately in a lace pattern. The two halves of the stole are joined using a 3-needle bind-off.

Teraina by Henna Markkanen

Cool summer evenings won’t hinder sunset strolls on the beach if you have Teraina in your warm-weather wardrobe. Teraina is a textured shawlette featuring cables and mock cables and is knit in a single skein of luxurious wool, cashmere, and silk sock yarn. Stow Teraina in your beach tote to wear during cool evenings along the shore and visits to overly air-conditioned beach-front bistros. This is a small, triangular shawl worked from the top down beginning at the neck edge and bound off at the lower edge with a crochet-chain bind off. The body of the shawl features regular cables and mock cables.

Fanore by Melissa Metzbower

Fanore is the perfect antidote for tousled beach hair. Shaping in a checkerboard lace pattern creates a simple bandana-style accessory for tying up loose locks. Pick up a skein of souvenir sock yarn in a popsicle color and knit Fanore while you wander along the ocean shore. A few clicks of the needles and you can pop Fanore on to keep your neck cool from mid-day rays. This bandana-style accessory is knit from tip-to-tip in a lace stitch pattern. Shaping in the lace pattern creates narrow ties at each end with a wide swath of lace in the center.

Matira by Noriko Ho

Matira is an updated take on the traditional sailor top. Knit in a warm-weather friendly hemp-blend yarn, it’s the perfect top for lounging on the beach or exploring the seashore with friends. A vibrant but versatile color combination can make Matira a summer wardrobe staple, and the simple construction will help it fly off the needles before your beach getaway is over. This v-neck tank is knit from the bottom up in the round. The front and back are divided at the armhole and worked flat. Armholes are finished using an i-cord bind off and the neckline is finished with a sailor-inspired collar and ties. Matira fits best with zero ease.

Choosing a Size Stranded Magazine patterns give you the measurements of the finished item, and projects that are fitted to the body will include an ease range recommendation. Add the ease range recommendation to your own measurements, and compare them to the schematic measurements to choose a size. For example, if you have a 34 in bust and the pattern suggests 1-3 in of negative ease, your ideal size would have a finished bust measurement somewhere in the 31-33 in range. Ease is the difference between a garment’s measurements and your own measurements. A sweater with positive ease is bigger in circumference than the wearer, and a sweater with negative ease is smaller in circumference than the wearer. A sweater with zero ease has the same circumference as the wearer. Negative ease makes for a snug-fitting sweater, but knits are stretchy so negative ease isn’t restrictive like you might imagine it to be. Positive ease is less form fitting and tends to drape over the body. To get an idea of what kind of ease you’re used to wearing, take your own measurements, and then measure your favorite store-bought sweaters. If your favorite sweaters typically are larger than

your own measurements, you like positive ease. If they’re typically smaller than your own measurements, you like negative ease. It’s important to note that the suggested ease isn’t universal throughout a garment. You want more ease through the armhole, less across the shoulders, and so on. For garment patterns, the suggested ease is generally the suggested ease through the bust or torso of the garment. With that in mind, study the schematic to make sure that your measurements correspond nicely with the measurements for the size you think you’d like to knit. For a fitted sweater with set-in sleeves, the cross shoulder measurement typically should closely match your own, and the armholes should be deeper than your own measurement. Make sure all of the measurements for a size will work well on you before you commit to knitting a whole sweater based on them. You may need to make custom modifications to get the best fit.
