Our Curriculum
from EYFS Handbook 2023
by StPetersYork
Our curriculum across the EYFS is built on curriculum guidance in the ‘Development Matters’ document Development Matters - Non - statutory curriculum guidance for the early years foundation stage (publishing.service.gov.uk)
We use this guidance to shape our curriculum. Our curriculum has plenty of scope and flexibility within it so we can respond to the children’s fascinations, the needs of our children and current global, local and seasonal events. Three areas are particularly important for developing the children’s foundations and enthusiasm for learning, forming relationships and thriving. These are called the P rime A reas of Development , which are; C ommunication and L anguage, Physical D evelopment and P ersonal, S ocial and E motional Development.
We also teach and support children in the four Specific A reas of D evelopment, through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied.

The S pecific A reas of Development are Literacy, M athematics, U nderstanding the W orld and Expressive A rts and Design.
Children in the EYFS learn by playing and exploring, being active and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both indoors and outside. These are called the Characteristics of Effective Learning.
