6 Yachting Information Committee

by Donna Sue Marks, Yachting Information Chair

At the time of this article the summer Tokyo 2020 Olympics - July 23, 2021 opening ceremony will be taking place - unless a last-minute cancellation occurs.

SPYC has been a long-standing supporter of the Olympics -see the front page of this issue and the Featured Article about our “A” Team Race Committee at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Savannah, GA.

Our Club has seen future Olympians begin their sailing journey as Junior Sailors. Hopeful competitors from all over the world sail on our racecourses, explore our Clubhouses and for some of us we have had the privilege of hosting athletes in our homes.

It goes without saying the discipline, passion, and perseverance must stay with these athlete’s day in and day out for them to have success.

No matter the outcome in Japan our 13 USA Sailors stand as role models for future generations of sailors. As a community of mariners, we should proudly support and congratulate our 2020 Olympians!

Valentine’s Day Regatta 2021 by Todd Fedyszyn, Youth Sailing Director

The 2021 SPYC Valentine’s Day Regatta looked a little different than years with a few adjustments made to adapt to the ongoing Covid Pandemic. First and foremost, the event was postponed and sailed in May and was the first qualifier for the 2022 USODA Team Trials. By changing the dates, SPYC will now host two TTQ Regatta’s which should benefit out local sailors.

Also, in order to not overwhelm the Sailing Center, we decided on a maximum of 150 competitors; and the event was only open to Championship Fleet sailors. Day one of the event brought light wind and warm temperatures early on.

The SPYC Race Committee (RC) made the decision to postpone on shore and wait for the anticipated afternoon sea breeze. At around 12:30 pm, the postponement flag was taken down and the fleet proceeded on a long tow about four miles south to get the sea breeze a little earlier.

Although the sea breeze didn’t arrive as early as we thought, it did start to fill from the Skyway paving the way for a nice late afternoon in 8-10 knots of breeze. One race was sailed ensuring that we would have a regatta. On day 2, sailors were greeted with a nice southerly of 10-12 knots and 4 great races finishing just before the afternoon deadline.

The overall title was won by Peirce Olsen with Carlos Beckman in 2nd and Finn Grainger in 3rd. SPYC’s Rosie Simpson was the top female with John Hartney in 13th overall and Adam Mendelblatt 27th . All three SPYC sailors have qualified for the 2022 USODA Team Trails Regatta.

PC Pat Seidenspinner was named PRO for the Mistral course for the upcoming 1996 Olympic sailing venue in Savannah, Ga. In 1995, she rallied a team of SPYC members to provide race committee for the pre-Olympics. The event went so well that everyone committed to return for the main event. Thus the A-Team was born in pursuit of excellence in race management! * * *

[accomplished SPYC Laser sailor] “I was scheduled to work race committee in 1995’s pre-Olympics and 1996’s Olympics for the Laser class. Each of four racing circles at the Olympics had a 70-person Race Committee. Shown is part of PC Pat Seidenspinner’s “A-Team.” SPYC members included: Carole & Paul Bardes, Wilson Barnes, Tom Ellis, Dave Fagen, Nancy Graham, Gene Hin-Cmdre Seidenspinner suggested an all kel, Stan Hyatt, Bob & Carol Johnson, Cindy Johnson, Tim SPYC committee for Alpha course which & Pam Landt, Gloria Lewallen, PC Pat & Ralph Seidenspinhosted the Mistral windsurfer. My wife, ner, Nancy & Harry Vildibill, Dick & Maridell Weaver. Pam, and I were reassigned to Alpha course and became part of the “A-Team.” Savannah presented many challenges: the course was 10 miles down river to the Wassaw Sound in the mouth of the Wilmington River; we started early every day and returned late each evening over a two-week period; security was high level with numerous inspection points of all boats on departures and return; the afternoon storms often caused many delays as well some intense moments. Due to the experience and leadership of Cmdre Seidenspinner (PRO), the Alpha team came through with flying colors. Still today, the SPYC is one of most respected clubs in the world running premier events year round. As a 3rd generation member, I learned my life skills from the Junior Sailing Program and mentoring from many selfless members. The future and legacy of our Club is in secure hands with the next generation assuming key positions.”

* * *

[Epilogue: In the years since the ‘96 Olympics, the Race Committee has continued to excel under the tutelage of not only PC Seidenspinner, but many others such as Tom & Barbara Farquhar & Carole Bardes. In 2007, SPYC received the prestigious St. Petersburg Y.C . Trophy for Excellence in Race Management!]

* * *

There were many many Club members involved in the making of the SPYC Olympic experience… lots of stories to tell—this is just the “tip of the iceberg.” We thank all those who made it happen!!!

2021 North Gulf Challenge Regatta by Selga Sakss, Event Chair

Nine sailboats competed in the April 23rd 11:00 am start of the inaugural North Gulf Challenge - a 319 NM (nautical mile) race from St. Petersburg to Pensacola. The event evolved when the annual Regata del Sol al Sol was cancelled due to pandemic restrictions on Isla Mujeres. A committee was quickly formed involving co-host Pensacola Yacht Club’s Commodore, Tom Pace, and Event Chair, Dave Johnson (aka DJ)...thus the Gulf Challenge was created!

Winds at the start were a promising steady 16-18 KN. But, ensuing weather conditions lived up to the “gulf challenge” as the competitors were met with 25-30 KN winds and heavy, confused seas followed by becalmed winds in leftover sloppy, rolling seas.

Sadly, three competitors were forced to retire early due to equipment issues. Six remaining vessels were met at the Pensacola Sea Buoy finish line by PYC members and escorted in to the club docks where each was greeted with a gallon of PYC’s Bushwhacker’s (with their special secret ingredient and yes, we managed to get the recipe!).

The last boat to finish, however; was welcomed with champagne to applaud the crew’s stamina and determination to finish the race.

Merlin was first to finish with elapsed time of 1 day, 05hrs. 04 min. and 50 sec., taking Line Honors and a 2nd place to Pendragon’s 1st place in the Spinnaker division. Flagship (an ongoing competitor in our annual Regata del Sol al Sol) finished with elapsed time of 3 days, 13 hrs. 08 min. and 31 sec. taking 2nd place in the Cruising division to XTC’s 1st place finish. Last month we entered the Club by the East entrance and noticed the mysterious Lady. This month we are recognizing the large cannon that sits in front of her, hidden in the bushes. What is the story behind it? How did it get there? [It only weighs about a ton!] The mystery has been somewhat revealed. Please read on!

the {Spanish} cannon came up the Gulf Coast from Sanibel Island to Tampa Bay, and somehow salvaged from Ft. De Soto. In 1980, it is recorded that member Walter Colony donated the cannon to the Club.

So, from which Spanish ship did the cannon originate? Ponce de Leon sailed into the waters of Pine Island Sound around Captiva in 1513; DeSoto came to the bay area in 1539 and began a conquest to conquer “La Florida”; Jose Gasparilla terrorized his way up and down the coast in the 18th century landing in Tampa and starting a parade; Diego “El Mulato” Martin plundered the Gulf Coast in the 1600s along with a few others. Pirates did roam the Gulf Coast, but more myths than facts preside.

DOWNTOWN Saturday, October 9th

SAVE THE DATE!

What is a Poker Run? A Poker Run is not a race. It’s a Club tradition and an assembly of some of the most social and active boaters in the SPYC. On Poker Run day, boaters meet at the Club docks and show off their well-curarated boat themes. Upon ariving at the Club they will check-in and receive a nautical map that will chart their path of adventure for the day. The map includes 5-8 different stops in which the boaters will travel to and collect a poker chip at each stop.

The stops are a combination of gracious member’s waterfront homes and local waterside restaurants. All boats are tasked with visiting all the stops in the time allotted. Upon returning to the Club, each partcipant will turn in their tokens for poker cards and play a

5-Card Poker hand!

Prizes are awarded for the Best Hand, Best “Boat Theme”, and Best “Dock Stop.” It is always fun to see what everyone comes up with!

POKER RUN is BACK at the Downtown Club! Saturday - October 9th, 2021

If you are interested in hosting a dock stop or volunteering to help with a stop, please email: Alex Deininger at aboudreau103@gmail.com
