Her lovingly prepared grazing platters extend well beyond the typical charcuterie board of yore. Each one is custom designed and styled according to the client’s desires, to be as much a feast for the eyes as for the stomach. In addition, she has partnered with wine company Malbec Bay to offer regular Cheese and Wine Pairing Experiences. For Hartpence, it’s a creative labor of love. She personally selects all the components from various markets known for fresh ﬂowers and produce, specialty gourmet and imported food products. “I have ﬁve local markets I shop, but Mazzaro’s is a staple,” she says of St. Pete’s massively popular Italian market which carries hundreds of imported products. She rents space at a commercial kitchen where she prepares each order, then delivers it. For large events with grazing tables, she’ll arrive a couple hours in advance to do set-up, returning later to whisk away the “Iremains.feelso fortunate to be doing what I really love,” Hartpence says. American Stage kicks off the new season with rock musical “Green Day’s American Idiot.” Based on the 2005 Grammy winning album of the same name by punk rock band Green Day, the raucous rock opera gives us the music of a generation while navigating themes that can be as intense as the score. The plot revolves around three friends struggling to ﬁnd meaning in a post-9/11 world. Music by Green Day, lyrics by Billie Joe Armstrong.

Uruguayan-Spanish artist Yamandú Canosa creates an intense dialog between Surrealism and contemporary art in The Visit on view through October 30 at The Dalí Museum. The sprawling exhibit features both abstract and ﬁgurative works, many with Dalinian inﬂuences, set in a dramatic installation especially conceived for the museum.

Canosa moved to Spain in 1975 and his work has been featured in museums throughout the world. This is his ﬁrst exhibit in the United States.

Canosa is recognized as part of the Avantgarde artistic legacy that precedes Dalí, said museum director Hank Hine in a press release.

“The Visit invites us to ask what lies ahead and provides a powerful interpretation of the contemporary relevance of Surrealism.” Most works were commissioned for the exhibit with the walls integrated into the overall theme by representing nature and places in Spain that were part of Dali’s life.

Immense balloon sculptures ﬂoat like complex spaceships in one gallery, while large-scale contemporary paintings depicting rage, anger, love and other emotions barter for attention nearby in an emotionally complex exhibit of works by St. Pete multi-disciplinary artist Jason Hackenwerth. It runs through October 16 at the Gallery at Creative Pinellas in Largo.

Titled DARKMATTER, the exhibit is a retrospective of Hackenwerth’s body of work, including fascinating spatial sketches for major balloon installations around the world over the past 20 years. Gallery hours are limited: Wednesday-Sunday from noon to 5 pm.

St. Petersburg is rich in culture and the arts, and lucky, indeed, to have three outstanding museums downtown. While many people visit these institutions for their works of art, they might be missing out on some rare ﬁnds at the museum cafés. We visited the top three to discover what each has to offer. What we found were hidden gems, each with its own personality and charm –and cuisine that stands out from the ordinary. All are well worth a trip to the museum, even if you don’t come for the art. — Marcia Biggs

Dalí Museum - Café Gala Since the reincarnation of The Dalí Museum on the downtown waterfront some 11 years ago, Café Gala has been enticing museum-goers from around the world, as well as locals, with a carefully curated menu of light Spanish tapas, salads, soups and desserts. At the helm since opening is Chef Chuck Bandel, a St. Pete native who was hand-picked to run the show by café owner and St. Pete restauranteur Steve Westphal (they are now café co-partners, says Bandel). The light, airy café is named for Salvador Dalí’s wife and muse Gala, focusing on authentic foods of the various regions of Spain, the artist’s homeland. Located in the museum lobby beneath the geodesic glass dome Enigma wall overlooking the AvantGarden, Café Gala diners are in the midst of the action from the adjacent museum store and the famous helical staircase that rises three stories to the galleries above. A seat at the counter is the perfect location to chill out and watch baristas whip up a latte or cappuccino. Or you can line up to place your order at the counter, then grab a seat at a table to wait for a server to arrive. The menu is constantly changing, says Bandel, according to what suits his whims, what’s seasonal, and often reﬂecting the major exhibit or artist at the time. He travels to Spain every summer, working

When the pandemic arrived in spring of 2020, most restaurants closed up shop, and the café at the Museum of Fine Arts was no exception. A joyous museum staff ﬁnally announced the sorely missed independently-run café would open in late April this year with a new name, a new menu and new owners.

The menu is a study of regional Spanish cuisine often with a modern twist — Pan Con Tomat Burrata & Jamon offers grilled bread with fresh tomato rub, burrata cheese, and serrano jamon drizzled with EVOO. The classic Tortilla Españolo is a small plate Spanish omelet with onion and potato, topped with lemon aioli. The Pressed Serranita presses roast pork and serrano jamon with Manchego cheese, tomato and pimento aioli. Avocado Toast is one of the top sellers, says Bandel, a far cry from mashed avocado by adding goat cheese mousse, with pickled tomatoes and spiced walnuts, topped with microgreens.

A selection of desserts includes a popular Tarta de Santiago almond cake, Basque cheesecake, scones, biscotti, muﬃns, and croissants. Café Clementine has quickly become the French pastry shop, and expert bakers Paulina and Vince Gervasi have become the darlings of downtown for their jaw-droppingly beautiful and delicious pastries. Thursday through Sunday, a regular clientele of downtown residents makes a beeline for the small pastry counter tucked in the back of the museum’s main lobby. Similar to a French patisserie, the shelves present artistic creations from elegant cream puffs and fruit tarts to organic salads, fresh paninis and breakfast bowls.

DINING OUT limited with a half dozen brunch dishes including a soup and a daily special in addition to the pastries. The Croque Monsieur is a marvel, layered with smoked ham, gruyere, bechamel, slathered with whole grain mustard on a fresh croissant. A Spring Caesar is made with Brick Street Farms greens; a Peach and Heirloom Tomato Salad surround a mound of soft burrata cheese.

Dineen services nine apiaries (hive complexes), including her own St. Petersburg backyard where she tends six hives on a quarter-acre of land. Dineen and her husband, Art Howe, run A Bee’s Place, a full-service bee business. They crank out lots of honey – selling jars of it at shops and markets from John’s Pass Village to Safety Harbor. Howe helps in the apiaries, bottles and delivers honey, makes and ﬁxes hive equipment, while Becky hits the road most days inspecting hives as a bee inspector for the Florida Department of Agriculture. She also works as a personal bee-tender caring for backyard hives when the homeowner prefers not to.

Becky Dineen turned the hobby of beekeeping into a full time profession.

It was unwanted bees that made a hive in his house wall that started Johnny Walker on his road to a “bee addiction,” he says. The Seminole resident and president of the Pinellas Beekeepers Association is a handy sort of guy, so was determined to remove the hive himself. When a neighbor came racing over to help, the learning began. That kind Samaritan was himself a beekeeper, inviting Walker to learn more at Tampa Bay Beekeepers Association meetings. Within a few years, Walker founded the Pinellas club, and was elbow deep in making his own honey for personal Bothconsumption.Dineenand Walker have been stung, excuse the pun, by the bee. They are part of a large Tampa Bay community that is concerned about the pollinator population and want to take a role in saving it. Suﬃce to say most of them also love raw honey, so the side beneﬁt of having a supply of your very own is also enticement.

Becky Dineen has made bees the center of her universe. After eight years in the banking and ﬁnance industry, she swapped high heels for boots and immersed herself in the life of bees. A visit to a roadside honey stand was all it took to get her curiosity about bees buzzing. The beekeeper told her all about raising bees, then invited her to come back to watch how it was done, maybe even help. She started attending meetings of the Pinellas Beekeepers Association and set up her own backyard

The Hive Hobby Backyard hives around Pinellas County and St. Petersburg are booming. Dineen reports that there are currently some 300 registered beekeepers in Pinellas County with 2,420 reported hives, and the number continues to grow. The clear winner is St. Petersburg, with 116 registered beekeepers tending 1,101 hives. After that, Clearwater has 50 beekeepers, Seminole has 25, Palm Harbor has 24 and Largo has 23. You don’t need a yard full of blooming ﬂowers and trees to own a hive, by the way.

“Bees travel anywhere from one to ﬁve miles from the hive for a nectar source,” explains Dineen. “St. Pete’s a great place to have bees because there are lots of ﬂowers, gardens and trees, even downtown.”

Others just want to be part of supporting the bee population by having a hive, but they hire someone to tend their hives.”

Walker says anyone thinking about beekeeping needs to know it’s a commitment and can be physically taxing, especially in Florida. “Not everyone is a good candidate,” he says. “We recommend before you get a hive to come to our meetings and learn what goes into it. Every couple months you have to go in and maintain it. A full honey super (box within the hive) can weigh up to 50 pounds, and in hot weather this can be challenging.”

Now in his third year, Truby is all in with beekeeping as a serious hobby. Despite holding a day job, he has obtained an LLC in order to sell honey and relocate hives. In the Greater Grovemont neighborhood of north St. Petersburg, Dwight Thomas and Bruce Rice are keeping a hive in their spacious backyard, awaiting a ﬁrst honey harvest this fall. Thomas grew up with bees his father tended in Indiana, but opted to hire Becky Dineen as their bee-tender. The single hive holds roughly 60,000 bees, says Dineen, and they are angry today. Could be the nearly 100 degree temperatures, or could be they are in a dearth which means an inadequate supply of nectar. She dons her netted headgear and grabs a smoker to calm them down, but a half dozen just won’t give in. Thomas and Rice stand watching the action from across the yard. “This is why we would rather have a professional do it,” Thomas remarks.

Todd Truby got into beekeeping just a few years ago because his teenage daughter wanted a hive. “So I thought, why not?” he said. “We went to a class and did some research and got some bees all within three weeks. The always imaginative James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art explores Black history in the West with a timeline of pictorial quilts. Black Pioneers: Legacy in the American West explores colorful, richly detailed works of art that chronicle the arrival of Africans in the American West in 1528 all the way through the Civil Rights Movement, bringing to life forgotten stories and lesserknown chapters in our shared Dispellinghistory. the myth that Black people in the Old West were mostly cowboys, Black Pioneers: Legacy in the American West, reveals the breadth of their occupations and achievements in society, religion, education, and the arts. The 50 quilts have been created by the Women of Color Quilters Network especially for this exhibition. For African American women quilts have always been at the core of artistic expression, taking form in the social, economic, and spiritual lives of the women who make them. “Quilts and quilt making are important to America and Black culture in particular, because the art form was historically one of the few mediums accessible to marginalized groups to tell their own story, to provide warmth for their families, and to empower them with a voice through cloth,” said curator, historian and artist Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi, founder of the Women of Color Quilters Network. The new SunRunner Rapid Transit System launches October 21, with buses connecting downtown St. Pete to the beaches every 15 minutes from 6 am to 8 pm, and every 30 minutes from 8 pm to midnight. Construction has begun on the highly-anticipated Topgolf facility at 220 Carillon Parkway in the Carillon business park of St. Petersburg, according to St. Pete Rising. Topgolf is a high-tech driving range and entertainment complex where patrons can participate, or spectate, from climatecontrolled bays with music, food, and drinks.

The $13.5 million Topgolf complex in St. Petersburg is expected to be 67,000 square feet with three ﬂoors, a restaurant and bar, along with a rooftop terrace. The facility will also have 100+ all-weather bays, over 200 high-deﬁnition TVs, and 450 parking spaces according to the company’s website. No opening date has been announced.

A successful marketing executive, Potts was working at Clearwater Marine Aquarium until 2020 when he co-founded his own marketing agency, Remedy 365. Coincidentally, he was about to endure another round of cancer treatment.

Potts spent the last two years writing this practical guide that aims to help navigate every step of the cancer experience, whether you’re the one diagnosed or supporting a loved one with cancer. It was often a struggle, he admits, going through 14 treatments of chemo and immunotherapy, and multiple surgeries. “The timing was perfect to write the book,” he said.

Cancer impacts everyone in a unique way, there is no right or wrong way of dealing with it, Potts says, which is why he highly recommends a support group or therapist. These days, he only occasionally leaves the house due to his compromised immune system. “I have to be very careful where I go,” he says.

The Cancer Club. Most of us are members, whether we have had cancer or not. You’re in the Club if you’ve ever been diagnosed with any type of cancer. Do you have a loved one or close friend affected by the disease? Then you’re in the Cancer Club, too. Dealing with a diagnosis of cancer can be traumatic once, but for St. Pete resident Bill Potts it’s been a recurring nightmare. Five diagnoses over the past 20 years, with subsequent treatments and recoveries, have shaped his life. He is currently battling diagnosis No. 6 for lymphoma, a blood cancer, after only 11 months in remission, and prostate

He was an avid runner and Ironman triathlete, taken by surprise in 2002 at age 41 when he found a lump behind his right ear. His life changed forever. He was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, that was followed in 2003 (incorrectly, a return of thyroid cancer), 2008 (lymphoma), 2014 (lymphoma), 2019 (lymphoma) and 2020 (lymphoma and prostate).

“Since it was COVID, I was staying home or driving to Jacksonville (Mayo Clinic) for treatment. … There were days and even weeks when I was too sick to Butwrite.”he persisted, with lots of encouragement from his editors. His publisher is working to get the book into bookstores at various medical centers across the country, and he’s doing podcast interviews from as far away as New Zealand.

Chemo brain (fuzzy memory) is real, so a second set of ears is a good thing. Get your legal documents in order. Just in case, select a medical surrogate and put your wishes in writing. Keep a list of your bank accounts, with online passwords to these, your phone and social media accounts.

Select a special buddy. This person is often a spouse or partner, but if you are single, ask a good friend you can rely on to come with you to doctor and chemo sessions and be a watchdog during your recovery.

Advocate for yourself. Take charge of your cancer journey. Select your care team carefully and get a second opinion. The best care team will listen to you and respect your thoughts and decisions. Do your own research on your type of cancer and various treatment options, including trials. High-volume, larger cancer centers have beneﬁts. The larger centers, such as Moﬃt Cancer Center, Mayo Clinic, etc. often have greater expertise, a wide range of support services, better service due to larger staff, more treatment options, the most high-tech equipment and can deal with rare cancers.

The advice he provides for both patients and caregivers is straightforward and would be of immense help to anyone newly diagnosed. The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI Tampa Bay) is a great example of this. Find the right fit. “At the moment, a lot of people are moving here from all over,” she explains. “They’re so excited for a new beginning and I’m excited to introduce them to St. Pete.” She’s also recently remarried and is enjoying that experience ﬁrsthand.

Through her work, she has the opportunity to channel that energy back into the city she loves.

“My husband Derek moved here from British Columbia and I feel like I’ve been re-energizing my relationship with St. Pete through him,” she shares. “We love riding our bikes. He’s a beer guy, so we go around to the different breweries. I love Book + Bottle. It’s a beautiful bookstore with a wine and coffee shop. I love Wild Roots, a plant shop where I go when I need some greenery in my life. I’ll walk around and smell the plants, which is inspiring.”

Gilmore says there is no “typical” client or type of home project they focus on. “We do everything from large scale custom homes where we are working with the architect and the builder to smaller projects like a bungalow that needs a refresh,” she explains. “I don’t choose based on the size of the project. I choose based on a personal connection, their goals and if I’m excited about it.”

“We’re working on an incredible midcentury modern renovation,” she explains. “We have gutted it and stripped away the bad ‘90s and early 2000s upgrades. It leans very midcentury, but we brought in a lot of modern elements and artistic inﬂuences.”

“We have a local artist doing some paintings on the walls for us,” she says. “We also work with local furniture makers. I love to design furniture and have it fabricated locally. One of my favorites is an architectural millwork company called T2TheS.”

Call for Redevelopment Proposals Was the Right One Half Page Ad

But Mayor Ken Welch made the bold move to hit reset on the redevelopment of the Historic Gas Plant District, home to Tropicana Field. While some may be miffed about the erased progress, Welch made the right call. Surely, it wasn’t an easy decision. The appetite for a plan for the transformational 86 acres only grew stronger as groups competed to earn the rights. Renderings elicited excitement as former Mayor Rick Kriseman narrowed the list of contenders, and tentatively chose the Midtown group just before his tenure came to an end.

Another key change: The prospect of the Rays making a full-season commitment to St. Petersburg has grown greater. When the process started, the Rays touted a sister-city solution that would have split seasons between Tampa Bay and Montreal.

Meanwhile, the tourism tax, if the Pinellas County Commission is willing, could help fund a new stadium.

Even I called for the city to boldly move forward. Welch made it clear he would reassess the bids from Midtown and the other finalist, Sugar Hill, before finalizing the effort. But his call for a complete do-over came as a surprise. Yet if you drill deeper and consider the city’s changing dynamics, starting over made sense. First of all, the city’s need for affordable and workforce housing ballooned into a full-blown crisis since Kriseman first started the process. The reset gives the new mayor a chance to address that most important community need.

When my oldest son Mat was 12, he invited a friend over to show him all the progress he had made on a certain video game. He had vanquished villains, conquered levels and he proudly boasted how he would soon win the his friend hit the reset button on the video game as Mat played, erasing all of his progress. My son has never spoken to that friend again, and 18 years later, he’s still miffed. Clearly, hitting the reset button can result in some bitter feelings.

Welch and staff will look to blend new concepts with a sentimental restoration of the classic neighborhood African-Americans once celebrated. It’ll hope to merge modern-day live-work-play concepts with features sure to make it inclusive for all. To succeed, Welch will have to vanquish villains (such as cynicism) and conquer levels (with public funding), but in the end he may very well win the game. And another reset won’t be required.

Yet make no mistake, this is also about restoring the energy this area once delivered to St. Petersburg’s African-American community. Mayor Welch has clearly branded this effort the Historic Gas Plant District Redevelopment – not the Tropicana Field Redevelopment – and he encourages supporters to speak openly about preserving culture and paying homage to the past.

The program has reached some 32,000 students across Tampa Bay, and has expanded to memory care centers and schools serving people with special needs.

A Young Lions quartet recently opened for international jazz recording artist and longtime supporter Eric Darius at an album release concert at the Palladium, and he invited two members to be part of his band that evening.

It was a thrill to open for Eric Darius said St. Pete’s Charlee Loyst, a Young Lion and 19-year-old grad of Lakewood High School who is now enrolled in the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. Loyst was blowing the audience away on the Steinway in the opening act that evening, effortlessly covering jazz standards such as Pent-Up House (Sonny Rollins, 1950s), Just Friends (Charlie Parker, 1949), and Straight, No Chaser (Thelonius Monk, 1966). Loyst grew up in a musical family listening to jazz and studied classical piano as a child. But in 9th grade, he opened his heart to the genre of jazz. “Lakewood High School is known for having one of the best jazz programs in Pinellas County,” he says. “I started listening and practicing and just got into it.” He was accepted into a school jazz combo and later the Eckerd Hall Youth Jazz Program where he honed his skills. This ambition to embrace jazz made Loyst a perfect candidate

The additional outfield seating is a welcome policy change to last year when mandatory COVID restrictions required limited spaced seating near the stage at small 4-seat tables. “We were pretty much locked into that seating requirement last year,” says organizer Gary Hallas. “This year brings back the rows of stage seating similar to what we had at Coachman Park, plus there will be a general admission area on the infield where people can bring blankets.” In other words, not all general admissions will be relegated to stadium grandstand seating. General admission tickets also allow access to the grass outfield berm areas behind the stage, and the Tiki Bar.

We feel we are doing our part with education and outreach to refuel this interest in jazz and grow the next generation of musicians and fans.”

A 2016 article printed in Science Daily cites research done by University of Missouri Health shows pet walking provides a signiﬁcant means to socialize with pet owners and others in your community.

A Reason to Exercise Fido needs to get outside a few times each day so make one of those a short walk around the block. It’ll strengthen your bond with your pup and enrich your pup’s life by exposing him to more smells. Plus, it’ll help you put one foot in front of the other with purpose. Slow speed, of course, to let him sniff every few steps. A study published in 2016 in The Gerontologist found that walking a dog can result in fewer visits to the doctor and a lower body mass index. That research also indicates that the deeper the bond is between you and your pet, the more beneﬁcial that animal may be to your health. And whether you have a dog or cat you’ll need to clean up after your pet. Think of each bend and scoop as a step toward improved ﬂexibility!
