View From the Back Pew In the Parable of the Faithful Servant, Jesus talked about the man who went on a journey and left his servants in charge of his home. Each received a job and he tasked one with watching the gate until the master’s return. They did not know when he would return nor whether it would be day or night. Jesus said the master would reward those that remained vigilant and alert with a feast. Those that forgot the instructions or abused other servants would receive a severe rebuke upon his return. The parable ends with a well-known saying, “From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from the one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded” (Luke 12:48). All of us have times when we feel like the servants waiting for the master to return. We toil faithfully at sometimesthankless tasks and wonder whether the ends justify the means. Jesus was certainly talking about his second coming in the parable but the story and its message speaks to many aspects of our daily lives as well. It reminds us there is no easy path to a place worth going. Recently someone asked me how the search for the new rector was progressing. They expressed support for the work the vestry is doing but voiced concern the process might drag on unnecessarily and take too long. I was about to explain the Diocesan process for hiring a priest and its many steps when it occurred to me they were not asking for a recitation of the tasks we have to undertake. They were letting me know they need a consistent voice in the pulpit each Sunday. I stopped in mid-sentence and said truthfully, “I understand, that’s what I want too, and that’s what we’re working toward.” By the time you receive this newsletter the vestry will have met to review and condense the parish survey and submitted the Community Ministry Profile to the Diocese. The ministry transition office will review the profile and prepare a list of individuals for our consideration. We should begin to receive applications by late April or early May and start interviewing candidates in June. If everything continues as planned, we will have a new priest-in-charge by fall. I am grateful to be associated with the group of folks we have on our vestry. They are a committed group of talented individuals focused on the tasks we have before us. I am confident we will meet the schedule and we will soon have the consistency and stability in the pulpit we all want and need. There used to be a small train depot near Hanover Courthouse that was a stop on a daily run to and from Main Street Station in Richmond. After World War II, the train was full of young people travelling to Richmond for work each day. Given the large number of single women in the work force and the returning veterans rejoining the same, its riders quickly knew it as “The Romance Train”. My mother and father met on that daily train, as did many others. In 1949, more than a dozen couples from the courthouse area and other places the train stopped were married. My parents were one of the first to take the plunge and were married on February 12, 1949. It was my mother’s 21 st birthday and a few days before Valentine’s Day. The couples dubbed themselves “the 49ers” and celebrated their joint anniversary year together for many years. I’ve only recently begun to appreciate the significance of so many local couples marrying in such a short period of time. They had all lived and fought through a world war and were eager to return to the things that matter the most. Of course, the result was the baby boom. I am eternally grateful to all of those couples for their examples of hope, commitment and love. As my mother occasionally told me when she was angry with my father, “Love can make you do crazy things”. I wish those 49ers and all of you a belated and Happy Valentine’s Day. Faithfully, Scott “Love is a friendship that has caught fire. It is quiet understanding, mutual confidence, sharing and forgiving. It’s loyalty through good and bad times. It settles for less than perfection and makes allowances for human weakness.” —Ann Landers
