Love has nothing to do with what you are expecting to get—only what you are expecting to give—which is everything. — Katharine Hepburn

WE HOPE WE CAN BRING some insight and inspiration to plans for your wedding day— or should we say “wedding days.” A full weekend affair seems to be proper protocol (page 20). In this issue we also highlight arbors (page 34), which are not only beautiful, but symbolic, and shine a spotlight on Stowe Mountain Chapel, an iconic interfaith sanctuary located half way up Mount Mansfield (page 54). And, while you’re busy planning your wedding, don’t forget about the honeymoon. Whether you want exploration, adventure or relaxation, we have the top honeymoon destinations to inspire you (page 76). Congratulations! Let the planning begin.

so you’re engaged LET THE PLANNING BEGIN RECENTLY ENGAGED COUPLES ARE OFTEN so swept up in the excitement surrounding their engagements that they can be forgiven for initially overlooking all the wedding planning that awaits them. Planning a wedding is no small task, but many couples very much enjoy all the hard work that goes into making their special day a success. >>

PLANNING

It’s hard for the newly engaged who have never before planned a wedding to know what awaits them. But the following tips can help make the wedding planning process go smoothly. • FIND YOUR METHOD. Organization is the key to pulling off the wedding of your dreams. Whether your organizational style is best served by jotting details like dates and deposit deadlines down in a notebook or utilizing an online spreadsheet or smartphone app, choose your method early on. Keeping information and reminders in one place can make it easier to manage all the tasks that lie ahead. • TAKE YOUR TIME. There’s no rush to the altar. Feel free to extend the engagement long enough to keep stress levels down and get the location and ceremony of your dreams. Many couples feel pressured to get married right away. Stretching out the engagement to save money or give yourself more time to plan can make for a wonderful wedding day. • DISCUSS THE BUDGET OPENLY AND HONESTLY. Wedding costs can vary widely, and couples should sit down together to decide what they can afford and are willing to pay for. • DECIDE ON A GUEST LIST. Planning decisions are often based around the projected number of guests. You’ll need to have a ballpark figure regarding guests before you can choose a venue and make other decisions, such as where guests will stay. If most of guests are coming from a certain area, such as your hometown, you may want to bring the wedding to them instead of asking them to come to you. 8

CORYN KIEFER PHOTOGRAPHY

• CREATE A PRIORITIES LIST. Make a list of at least three things that are most important for each of you. It may be the ceremony location, the food, or another factor. Knowing what is important can help you negotiate prices and understand what to look for when planning. These are just some of the many considerations couples should make while planning a wedding. It’s also important that couples have fun when planning their nuptials.

amanda & hunter MANCHESTER, VT

AMANDA AND HUNTER WANTED a nontraditional wedding and found the perfect spot at The Wilburton Inn in Manchester. “The women who run the inn were very supportive of our nontraditional vision. It was important to us to work with people and in a space that felt like the right fit and vibe,” said Amanda, who revealed that the couple met in high school as part of the same friend group. “We became best friends during college and started dating in our mid-twenties while living in California,” she said. But back to that wedding ... how nontraditional? A Prince tribute band provided music. Royal blue and gold tablecloths graced the reception tables. Suits of armor. Blacked out curtains around the tent. Chicken feet? “We surprised all our guests with the medieval theme for the reception,” Amanda recalled. “Hunter and I ‘rode’ in for our grand en10

trance on a bike that Hunter turned into a horse carriage. Dinner was fried chicken with their feet still on and huge bone-in ribeye.” Instead of toasts, five of the couple’s closest friends roasted them. “It was hilarious dinner entertainment, and very inappropriate for our grandmother!” she said. The location also allowed guests to stay on site and everyone was able to walk around to each other’s houses on the property, enjoy a bonfire welcome party, breakfast in the mansion, among other touches, negating the need for driving from one place to another. “It makes it a fun weekend event rather than just a wedding, and everyone got to spend a lot of quality time celebrating together. It created a unique and memorable experience for our friends and family.” “And, we have to mention Purple,” Amanda said. “The lead singer does an incredible Prince, and their performance of ‘Purple Rain’ had all of us belting along in tears. It was so beautiful.”

Welcome to our wedding weekend What says celebration more than popping bottles of bubbly. Champagne towers made a comback in 2022 and they are not going out of style. Employ as an entrance or later in the evening instead of a ceremonial cake cutting.

Sparkler exits are on the way out. Opt for a more creative and safer alternative. Streamers, LED balloons, cold pyro fountains, and pom poms.

bridget & greg MANCHESTER, VT

Fate intervenes one day at the National Academy of Fine Art on New York City’s Upper East Side when Bridget and Greg meet. Following a whirlwind romance, the couple falls in love over shared interests in travel, music, and literature. Fast forward six years and Greg and Bridget travel to Italy, where at sunset on a warm June evening, overlooking the Italian Riviera from the village of Corniglia at the heart of Cinque Terre, Greg proposes. ••• WHILE PLANNING THEIR WEDDING, it was key for both Bridget and Greg that their love and the journey they were starting together were central to every detail. “When planning got stressful, as is inevitable, it was helpful to 24

keep returning to that keystone thought,” the couple wrote to us. On their wedding day, “a standout moment for us both was our private ‘first look’ at Equinox Pond in Manchester, a place that had been special to us for years. We felt a huge sense of relief, joy, and love when we saw one another. We couldn’t stop smiling!” That first look set the stage for the rest of the day. Bridget and Greg came down the mountain to the ceremony, where that joy and love was echoed by the love pouring out from their families and friends waiting to celebrate with them. ••• Footnote: Bridget was a Broadway and musical theater dancer, and the LaDuca custom-made dance boots are what dancers wear.

Arches, or arbors, take many shapes and forms during wedding ceremonies, and they serve as more than just a frame for the bride and groom. Rich in religious symbolism and antiquity, arbors represent a link to future and past, framed by the present—a new path, forged together.

pooja & dan SHELBURNE, VT

DAN AND POOJA MET IN 2016 during their first year at the University of Vermont College of Medicine. “Dan was the first person I met during orientation, and we quickly fell in love,” Pooja recalled. “We went on our first date at American Flatbread and the rest is history.” Dan soon realized medicine wasn’t for him and after a few years of navigating a long-distance love affair, he joined Pooja in Albany, N.Y., where she’s completing her general surgery residency and Dan works for a health care start up. Dan proposed in Central Park in the fall 2020. 40

“We really enjoyed planning our wedding,” Pooja said. “The best part for us was carefully choosing our wedding vendors. We met and got to work with some amazing people.” At first the couple wasn’t sure if they could pull off a traditional Indian wedding in Vermont as most Indian wedding vendors are based outside of the state. “We knew it would be out of our budget to have all out of state vendors,” Pooja said. “We are incredibly grateful to everyone who worked hard to make a traditional Indian wedding possible in Vermont. They helped to make our dream Vermont wedding possible.”

just a hike away MOUNTAIN CHAPEL CREATES WEDDING MAGIC

S

BY AVALON STYLES-ASHLEY

unlight broke through a cloudy August sky, peering into Mt. Mansfield’s forest canopy to kiss the Stowe Mountain Chapel just as Jennifer Platten and Chad Tetreault’s wedding ceremony began. An air of magic hovers around the little stone and wood building. Maybe it’s the shimmer of every “I do” uttered there since the chapel was established in 1983. Maybe it’s the location on the historic Toll Road up Mt. Mansfield, a revered landmark for Vermonters. Maybe it’s the lingering aura of love that helped dream up and plant this sacred building in the forest. Rev. Dan Haugh, pastor at the Stowe Community Church and resident chaplain at the Stowe Mountain Chapel, described the building as a space that provides “a brief moment of remedy, of peace and tranquility” for all people who come across it, no matter their spiritual bent or sexuality. “You hear the birds chirping, smell the clear air, feel the wind rushing through the trees and leaves. People experience a deep sense of peace here,” he said. Haugh usually officiates between five and 10 weddings and vow renewals every year at the chapel, but hopes to expand that number. In addition, faith leaders of all kinds host regular religious services and other gatherings there. Last August, Haugh had the pleasure of marrying Platten and Tetreault in the chapel, which provided an intimate setting for the couple’s nuptials. “The day was absolutely magical!” Jennifer recalled. “Our family members have all reached out to share just how meaningful the experience was for them: the mountain in all of its glory, the beautiful chapel, and a ceremony filled with love and the bringing together of two families.” The chapel lends itself to intimate ceremonies, not just for its small size. Haugh and other chaplains work closely with couples before their big day, getting to know their love story. For a recent autumn wedding, Haugh met the couple a year prior and built a relationship over multiple meetings to grasp their vision. >>

CAITLIN KELLY PHOTOGRAPHY

Couples often enjoy refreshments and photos on the chapel’s stone patio, then drive up to the summit for a mini reception, champagne and more photos, Haugh said. Some couples hold their ceremony at the chapel then ski down to a reception at the mountain’s base. Since its inception, the chapel has been interfaith. Today it is supported by founding family members, chaplains of various faith communities and a board of directors. Rev. Marcus Hill and William Kieffer Jr. erected the chapel in memory of Kieffer’s young daughter, Mary Donnelly Kieffer, known lovingly as Polly, who had died of leukemia in 1977. For Sarah Kieffer, William’s daughter and Polly’s older half-sister, the building is “a source of family unity and remembrance, a way to celebrate the lives of people who we love and are gone.” She recalled the day the chapel was unveiled, about 200 people crowded within its curved walls. “I’m not sure how we all fit in,” Kieffer chuckled. Perhaps a small miracle. •••• Haugh hopes to help reintroduce the chapel to the changing Stowe community and attract more prospective couples. He encouraged folks skiing past to stop in, learn about the chapel’s history by scanning a QR code on its new outdoor sign, and to visit the website at stowemountainchapel.org. 57

LISTEN UP FELLAS — and gals. Here’s how you propose: Take

a romantic boat ride on the Mekong River, follow up with cocktails at the famous Raffles Hotel Le Royal in Phnom Penh and ... “We went for a walk in the garden and Ryan proposed,” remembers Michelle. The couple had worked together for eight years — never dating — but remained friends. They reconnected in New York City, got together and then did the long-distance thing for several years before moving together to Cambodia, where Michelle had taken a job and where they stayed for three years, living, working and traveling. But Cambodia to Stowe? “We wanted a location that guests would be excited to visit in the winter, and we both enjoyed Stowe from previous trips before we started dating,” Michelle said. After they moved back to the States (Madison, Wis.), the couple made a “memorable trip” to Stowe to meet all the vendors and have 58

a food and beer tasting with all their wedding vendors. “We made plans with Savannah to do an outdoor winter adventure photo shoot the day after the wedding,” recalled Michelle. “The photos were so much fun to take even though it was seriously freezing that day!” A COVID-19 surge moved the wedding to back two months, to November from January 2022, which still allowed Michelle’s 90year-old grandmother to make the trip, as well as one of Ryan’s groomsmen, who came from Malaysia. “We had originally planned winter touches of eucalyptus, mulled wine and cozy fur wraps, and were able to still use them all anyway, just with a fall twist,” she said. “Over the course of the planning and actual wedding I think we have now seen Stowe in all seasons, and it is equally beautiful at all times of the year. “It was such a memorable day filled with love that we will always cherish.”

DETAILS

inject your personalities into the wedding day... Weddings present an opportunity to embrace time-honored traditions. However, couples can be as tradition-minded or as unique in their wedding details as they desire. There’s certainly room to let your personalities shine through during both the ceremony and the reception. Increasingly, couples are seeking ways to set their celebrations apart. While one may not want to banish all customs, here are seven ways to inject some personality into a wedding. MAKE CUSTOM-DESIGNED RINGS. Work with a jeweler to have rings made to your specifications rather than buying what is available in the display cases. Rings do not have to be matching sets. Select ring styles that complement each another but which are slightly different in design. CUT OUT THE CAKE. Many couples just aren’t fans of traditional sponge cake with buttercream or fondant overlay, so why have that expensive, multi-tiered confectionary creation at the wedding? Instead, serve a more popular dessert. Dessert artists can whip up many impressive options and present them in dramatic (or cake-like) fashion. What about a tower of decadent brownies or a stack of fruit-and-cream-filled crêpes? WRITE THE VOWS. Vows present an excellent way for personality to shine through. Couples can showcase humor, compassion, quirks, and more with the messages they share with one another — and their guests. CUSTOMIZE TABLE NUMBERING. Seating cards traditionally guide guests to numbered tables around the reception hall. There is no rule that the tables have to be organized by numbers, however. Love Ncan name the tables by your favorite film. If travel is your passion, pick fun destinations from around the world. Remember that catering staff may ask that numbers accompany your alternative system for ease of serving dinner.

66

KELSEY REGAN PHOTOGRAPHY

MAKE A GRAND ENTRANCE. Don’t feel beholden to taking a limousine to and from your wedding. Fans of the movie “Batman” can rent a Batmobile replica. Those who couldn’t get enough of “Breaking Bad” may want to roll up in an RV. There’s also the option of an antique or sports car or horse-drawn carriage. Options will vary depending upon where you live. SERVE CUSTOM COCKTAILS. Give traditional drinks custom names that feature details of your lives or how you met. If someone is a microbrewer or makes his or her own wine, these boutique beverages also can be served. CREATE A MONOGRAM. Use the monogram on save-thedates, invitations, the homepage of a wedding website, the ceremony program, and even on cocktail napkins at the reception. The continuity will help pull together the tone for the wedding.

AMELIA MARIE PHOTOGRAPHY

meredith & tony STOWE, VT

MEREDITH AND TONY met on a train.

“Eight years ago this September,” Meredith said. “The MBTA Green Line in Boston!” Tony struck up a lighthearted conversation on the lengthy ride home and asked Meredith to grab a drink with friends that same night at Harry’s Bar in Allston. “Many dates, trips and seven years of adventures later, we said ‘I do’ in lovely Stowe, Vermont, in front of all our loved ones on Sept. 23, 2022.” The plan called for an outdoor wedding, but, hey, this is Vermont. Don’t like the weather, wait a few minutes. 70

“We look back and laugh as everything was supposed to be outside, but it snowed and hailed the morning of the wedding,” Meredith recalled. “But our incredible vendors pulled it off, rearranging the day and making it a wonderful evening of outdoor-indoor magic.” Fall was the perfect time for the couple to marry in Stowe and, of course “seeing the smiles of everyone we love from every stage of life with us and supporting us as we entered this new chapter.” Meredith said their day was filled with joy and laughter, happy tears and many special moments. One of her favorites: “My husband surprised me by singing ‘Stand by Me’ with the band!”

DESTINATIONS

just married WHERE TO HONEYMOON? Couples have different ideas about what makes a great honeymoon destination. Some couples want to spend their honeymoon with their toes in the sand on a secluded beach, while others look to traverse the rapids in a tandem kayak. There’s simply no rules when it comes to choosing a honeymoon destination other than picking a place each of you will enjoy. With that in mind, couples looking for inspiration can consider the 10 most popular honeymoon locales as determined by a recent survey from expedia.com.

MALDIVES

UNITED KINGDOM: A multi-city train trip through various parts of England and Scotland remains a popular honeymoon destination. DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES: Honeymooners looking for something upscale can consider Dubai, which combines sun, sand and unrivaled luxury. PARIS, FRANCE: Little needs to be said about this European city considered one of the most romantic locales in the world.

SPAIN

FLORIDA: Pristine beaches, awe-inspiring sunsets and seemingly endless sun and warmth makes Florida a popular honeymoon destination, particularly for those on a budget. LOS ANGELES: Los Angeles truly has it all — sunsoaked beaches, world-renowned restaurants and, of course, Hollywood. MADRID TO SEVILLE, SPAIN: Couples who want to make multiple stops can consider this popular option, which takes visitors from Spain’s capital and most populous city to one of its most historic and unique destinations. ROME, NAPLES AND AMALFI COAST, ITALY: A tour of three of Italy’s most wondrous locales needs no further explanation.

ICELAND

ST. LUCIA: An idyllic island country in the eastern Caribbean. ICELAND: Iceland has experienced a tourism boom in recent years as more and more people have discovered the unique beauty and extraordinary culture of this island nation in the North Atlantic. THE MALDIVES: An archipelagic state in South Asia, The Maldives has the lowest elevation of any country in the world, which means its temperatures are always hot and humid, making this an ideal stop for honeymooners who just want to relax on sunny, idyllic beaches. 76
