As the Event Chair for Bellefonte Victorian Christmas on behalf of Historic Bellefonte, Inc. and the BVC Committee I would like to welcome you to the 31st Annual Bellefonte Victorian Christmas celebration. This holiday event has been one of my family’s most cherished Christmas traditions. My children grew up participating in concerts, dressing in Victorian period dress, and now my grandchildren are continuing to build their own lasting memories by taking part in this event. I have a plaque on the wall of my home that states “Memories Are Made in Bellefonte.” It’s these memories that have kept me focused on what is good for the event and the community as a whole. I wanted to create an event that everyone from every economic background could enjoy, an event for all those who visit to have a grand time as they build memories during their stay in beautiful “Victorian Bellefonte”. As I assumed this responsibility I wanted to keep the event festivities in the downtown area or close proximity so that once our visitors reach the downtown area they could easily walk or ride to every venue and not worry about where to park or if they would have enough time to enjoy all that was offered. I want all who visit to spend time in our fine shops, restaurants, stay in our beautiful B&B’s, visit the Bellefonte Art Museum, the Historical Library, and soak up the history and architecture while enjoying the event. I would hope that this Special Guide will help you take advantage of all the venues and activities the event has to offer. Each year we have tried to add 4
something new to keep the event fresh. This year I would like to welcome our newest venue “Festival of Trees” in partnership with the Centre County United Way serving 37 of our county agencies. Make sure you take the time to catch the special FREE “Festival of Trees” shuttle at the High School or on the Diamond in front of the Courthouse to visit this winter wonderland of trees at the Central PA Institute of Science and Technology. My greatest joy throughout my experience for four years has been working with the best group of individuals that I have ever worked with on any project. The members of the Bellefonte Victorian Committee are hardworking, tireless, and selfless individuals who care about the community as much if not more than I do. I have also found joy as I have worked and felt the support from businesses, professionals, individuals, shop keepers, restaurateurs, and community organizations who have not only worked in a cooperative effort but have aided the event financially. This community as a whole has helped to make this event what it has become this year and every year. I would also like to thank our umbrella organization, Historic Bellefonte, Inc., the Bellefonte Borough, and the Bellefonte School District for their support before, during, and after the event. What a joy it is to live in a community so diverse that we can all work together for the common good. Last but not least I could not have done any of this without my husband, my children, and my grandchildren, without

Bellefonte Victorian Christmas An Enticing Schedule of Events From Thursday evening, December 6 through Sunday evening, December 9, Bellefonte recreates the essence Christmases past – an old-fashioned family celebration as it was more than a century ago. 2012 Bellefonte Victorian Christmas A Heartfelt Holiday Hometown Celebration Some say, “tis not the season” until they experience Bellefonte Victorian Christmas. This gentle and merry weekend of oldfashioned holiday entertainment, shopping, and social events embodies what’s good and wholesome about this holiday of all holidays. The 31st Annual Bellefonte Victorian Christmas is Friday, December 7 through Sunday, December 9, with “A Gaslight Gala” to kick off the weekend on Thursday, December 6. For opening ceremonies Friday, you are invited to gather at the Bellefonte Elementary School at 6:30 p.m. You’ll be greeted on the front steps by Mr. Dickens and the Bellefonte Community Band Enter the auditorium for and enjoy entertainment by the Nittany Knights, the Bellefonte Elementary School Fourth and Fifth Grade Choir, Middle School Women’s Chorale, St. John’s Elementary School Choir, and some other special performances, including a preview performance of the Fezziwig’s Christmas Party! More Than 75 Artists & Crafters At Three Sites including Middle School This year’s Bellefonte Victorian Christmas offers a number of opportunities for you to purchase unique, creative, or handmade gifts. The Arts & Crafts Show is in three locations. The Bellefonte YMCA on High Street is hosting more than 25 artisans. The Bellefonte Elementary School at the corner of Allegheny and Linn streets will have more than 20 booths.

The largest and newest arts & crafts venue is the Bellefonte Middle School, with more than 30 new vendors! The Arts & Craft Show is coordinated in a cooperative effort by the Bellefonte Victorian Christmas Committee and the Bellefonte Historical and Cultural Association.

Since the free shuttle and parking are at the Bellefonte High School and Middle School parking lots, be sure to stop in at the middle school before you take the shuttle downtown, or when you get back. There are food concessions at all three arts & crafts venues provided by the Girl’s Gymnastic Team at the YMCA, the Bellefonte Sunshine Rotary at the Bellefonte Elementary School, and the Centre Chapter of the American Red Cross at the Middle School. Months of Planning & Many Volunteers Behind the Scenes at Victorian Christmas The Bellefonte Victorian Christmas Committee, headed by Sally Houser and made up of 14 Committee Chairmen, meets monthly each February through May, taking off June and July, and meets again in August right up to December’s event. The BVC committee takes the rest of December and January off and starts all over again in February for the next year’s event.
Downtown decorating takes place the Sunday before Thanksgiving with Decorating Committee Co-Chairs, Joe and Virginia Gassner, supervising the preparations, cutting of the live greens, and fluffing the bows the night before. Joe and Virginia start their decorating day about 4 a.m. by laying out all the greens and bows. Then they meet with all volunteers Sunday morning at 7 a.m. at the Bellefonte Moose Lodge #206 for breakfast provided by lodge members and volunteers. At 8 a.m., on the Diamond in front of the court house, volunteers and the BVC committee members get last-minute instructions and then team up to decorate 136 lampposts downtown and at Talleyand Park, decorate at the Train Station, and festoon three bridges with greens and bows. The Bellefonte Borough puts all the lights on the trees and adds a tree on the Diamond the week before decorating day. The tree is usually donated by a member of the community. 22
The Undine Fire Company decorates the front of the Centre County Courthouse with greens and bows. CPI students bring Santa’s House and put it together on the Diamond so it can be decorated and made ready for Santa. The Centre County Commissioners also provide labor for the day. Once the decorating is complete, Sunday ends with a wonderful Thanksgiving luncheon with turkey and all the trimmings provided by the Bellefonte Elks Lodge #1094. An annual grant from Bellefonte Elks Lodge’s Garver Fund partially funds the purchase of the live greens and bows. The week after decorating day, the Bellefonte Senior High School Art Class under the direction of Art Teacher Meg Barton paints the windows at many of the town’s businesses. It takes many hours, generous donations, and dozens of volunteers behind the scenes to create Bellefonte Victorian Christmas. Thanks to everyone who helps, donates, and visits our fair town — making this celebration an outstanding Centre County tradition for more than 30 years.

Santa, Puppets & Victorian Tea Children Love Victorian Christmas Families love Victorian Christmas. There is inspiring music, handmade gifts, beautifully decorated homes, carriage rides, and plenty of things for the kids to enjoy. The big favorites are Saturday – the Victorian Tea and Breakfast with Santa. Be sure to bring your favorite children to experience the magic of an old-fashioned Christmas.

After the kids have breakfast with Santa, he’ll take his bright red “sleigh” to the diamond in the center of town, arriving at 11:45 a.m. The Bellefonte High School Brass Band will play as Santa arrives at Santa’s House, in front of the court house. The jolly old elf will be available to visit with children from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. There’s no cost, but bring your camera for priceless pictures.

the original tea scheduled on Saturdays in the past has grown to three sittings – at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday. The children’s tea is at Bellefonte Art Museum, 133 N. Allegheny Street and the cost is just $10 per child. Adults should accompany the children and see the little darlings learn the fine art and etiquette of a formal tea. Puppet Meister
Here’s something new for the kids to enjoy! The Puppet Meister will present seven puppet shows Saturday and Sunday at the Bellefonte Elementary School Auditorium, corner of N. Allegheny and W. Linn streets. Children of all ages will love these playful shows – Saturday at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. Cost is just one non-perishable food donation per person, to help stock the FaithCentre food pantry for the holidays.
Train Display
Come help celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouting. The scouts have set up a mini “museum” showing vintage uniforms and a display from each of the troops in the region. They’ll be hosting this display Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the old carriage house behind the Centre County Library and Historical Museum.
Gingerbread House Contest
Come and see the amazing display of gingerbread houses at the Diamond Deli, 103 N. Allegheny Street. Maybe you’ll want to enter your own creation! Categories include adults, teens, children, and senior citizens. Prizes will be awarded and announced at the opening ceremonies Friday evening. All entries will be exhibited until December 19 in the deli windows.

Dickens Ball, Gala & Dinner Special Entertainment for All The Brian Belge Dickens Troupe returns, bringing the seasonal magic of Charles Dickens and A Christmas Carol to Bellefonte Victorian Christmas. This year, the Gaslight Gala Dinner includes Scrooge’s Wedding Ball! On Thursday, December 6, Charles Dickens hosts the gala and ball at the American Philatelic Society building on Match Factory Place. S a t u rd ay evening, December 8, the familyfriendly buffet and dinner theatre brings you more Dickens magic. There’s Music In the Air Free Concerts All Weekend Music is one of the joys of the holidays. Carolers and choirs, bands and soloists, pianists and quartets – Bellefonte will ring out with music from the first note of the Opening Ceremony through the stirring finale of the Victorian Christmas Community Choir Concert Sunday evening. All of these musical presentations are free – and promise to raise the spirit of Christmas in every heart. As you reach the Opening Ceremony at the Bellefonte Elementary School, Mr. Dickens and the Bellefonte Community Band greet you on the front steps. In addition to special remarks, the ceremony features music by, the Nittany Knights, the Bellefonte Elementary School Fourth- and Fifth-grade Choir, Middle School Women’s Chorale, St. John’s Elementary School Choir, and other special performances, including a preview performance of Dickens Holiday Show. Saturday and Sunday offer many

Sunday, December 9 2 p.m. – Nittany Valley Symphony Youth Flute Choir 3 p.m. – The Phil Bressler, Andrea Noid Flute Duet Director Natalie Stanton has a wonderful lineup of holiday favorites planned at the popular Bellefonte Community Band Christmas Concert, Saturday at 7:30 p.m. It’s at a new location this year, Bellefonte Elementary School Auditorium at the corner of Allegheny and Linn streets. Ms. Stanton says the volunteer band, of around 50 players, will present Manheim Steamroller’s arrangement of The Holly and the Ivy, Irving Berlin’s arrangement of traditional Christmas songs, Elvis’s Blue Christmas, and Fantasia on a 13th Century Carol, with the March of the Three Kings theme. She always adds a few songs “just for fun.” This year you’ll hear Secret Agent Santa and the Christmas CanCan, Offenbach’s Can-Can with a surprising Christmas song medley woven in. “We have players from high-schoolers to 80 years old, a wide range of abilities, talent, and personalities. Our Jazz Band will also play a few numbers Saturday night, and you’ll hear our Brass Band at the Opening Ceremony,” she said. Artist Susan Nicholas Gephart’s Home & Studio 351 East Bishop Street
You’ll experience a visual delight in the 1902 home and studio of artist Susan Nicholas Gephart. Built by a school teacher and located directly across from the first Bellefonte High School, it was the perfect place to raise her three children over the last 25 years. Now, the walls are adorned with beautifully framed art throughout all three floors. The entry features rich woodwork and French doors opening into the first gallery. The living room displays antiques from the H.G. Wells side of her family¸ along with colorful Impressionistic landscape paintings in all sizes and mediums. Seeing the first floor could fill your love of art with prolific artist’s work, but you will want to climb the lovely oak steps and discover the paintings above. The third floor attic pastel studio has a spectacular view looking through a huge pecan tree. Beyond the mountains, and below, the double-lot terraced summer gardens sleep. Within this space you will discover the markings of art made from pure colors of

of the Petrikin family, one of the founding families of Bellefonte. Currently, Robert and Candace Dannaker serve as stewards of this historic home. The Dannakers purchased the home in 1987 form Mike and Sandy Krehel. The initial portion of the house was constructed in 1830; the stone was mined from a quarry on Jacksonville Road. The architectural style is l house construction, with Georgian details. A bag wing addition was completed circa 1840. The home was given new windows, new first floor oak narrow strip flooring and roof cornices in 1865 following the death of Samuel Harris and became a rental home for several years. Many original elements remain intact throughout home. Plumbing was installed in the home in 1939 and many local people remember living in a portion of the house that had been converted to an apartment during WWII. Stories have been told of a tailor who operated out of the dining room and candy was sold through a window, now removed, in the parlor. Today it is non-commercial singlefamily residence. Samuel Harris House It has been listed as a station on the Home of Robert & Candace Underground Railroad with a hidden room Dannaker on the third floor and a connection to another 203 East Howard Street station master in Centre County, B. the wealthy and eccentric George Valentine, one of the sons of the Iron Ore Industry of Bellefonte. George built this residence as a “retirement home.� According to those who still remember him, George was quite the character and individualist. He kept a horse and riding carriage which he loved to “roar� around the streets of Bellefonte when most people were driving cars. The construction of the house also reveals some of George’s “eccentricities,� such as the interior door and window molding that which is formed to look like wood but is actually made of steel, a commodity that would have not been easy to come by at the time of construction. George was also a recognized artist; one of his paintings is in the permanent collection at Centre County Historical Museum and Library on the corner of E. Howard and N. Allegheny streets. The house still remains a showcase of original art by Leeshaun’s parents, well recognized artists, whose works are housed in major collections throughout the United States and England. Leeshaun is a recognized pastel artist. Who knows, while touring this home this year, you may be greeted by the holiday-loving resident ghost, George Valentine!
The Ellis Orvis Home 140 E. Linn Street
Ellis Orvis bought three lots on E. Linn Street in 1887 and built a family home on the center lot in 1892. The home has been little altered to this day, although for a time it was divided into three apartments. The current owners bought it at auction in 2007 and began its restoration to the stately one-family home in April 2008, completing much of it by 2009. Highlights include a variety of notable wooden parquet floors, a Shunk’s kitchen especially designed to complement the period and style of the house, pocket doors, and lovely brown-toned tile floors, each with a flower motif, surrounding the living room fireplace. out in Bellefonte’s 1911 High School. Fortunately everyone got out unharmed but the three-story building was irreparably damaged. The town commissioned a salvager, Edie Kofman, to demolish the ruins and clear the lot of debris. Mr. Kofman, a true man ahead of his time, saved thousands of long, narrow orange and brown-toned, slightly chipped bricks, hundreds of feet of 3x10 framing lumber, and steel I-beams capable of supporting the Courthouse. Instead of selling what he could and dumping the rest in a landfill, he purchased a 50x250 foot portion of the 150x250 foot lot at 313 East Linn Street upon which a Victorian lumber dealer, John Ardell had, in 1883, built a magnificent mansion. Mr. Kofman hauled all his salvage material to the site, now 319 East Linn Street upon which he built his family a spacious dwelling. Millie Baker Ragosta and her late husband, Vince, bought the house in 1983 and began renovations that required immediate attention. After Vince’s Death in 1990, Millie continued the restoration, including electrical and plumbing work, refinishing the oak floors, and installing nearly invisible storm windows. Millie hired skilled carpenters from Allensville Planing Mill to build Maple Shakerstyle cupboards of her own design. Home of Millie Ragosta The living room ceiling is spanned by five 319 E. The current owner has added her own eclectic antique furnishings that include a 1770 spinning wheel originally brought to the Americas by Anne Pinckard¸ the wife of Richard Henry Lee, a Virginia delegate and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. There is also a mission style Royal Easy Chair, the original recliner. It was made in Sturgis, Michigan in the early 1900s for her great grandfather, who immigrated to Michigan with his family from Germany in 1890.
