New York 2019

ABOUT CRYPTOCURRENCY Cryptocurrency has been in existence since Bitcoin was established in 2009. However, the technology goes back even further, and the theoretical construct goes back to the 1980s. In simple terms, cryptocurrencies are digital assets and exist as alternative digital currencies (there are over 1,800 incirculation). They use decentralised control processes in contrast to traditional central banking systems and currencies that use centralised control processes. Cryptocurrencies rely upon highly complex cryptographic principles, and utilise strong ryptography to secure financial ransactions, control creation of units, distribution, and verification of asset transfer. The validity of each cryptocurrency coin is provided by blockchain, blocks (growing records within data) which are linked together and secured through cryptography. The validation of transactions within cryptocurrency networks is known as mining. Most cryptocurrencies are characterised by a finite supply, a precise number of units that can and will ever exist, providing them with an inherent value.

₡RYPTOCURRENCIES

The popularity of cryptocurrency has steadily increased the rivalry on the altcoin market and has given rise to Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs). It has also produced significant market altering incidents such as crashes, market thefts and global scams. For example, in January 2014, the world’s largest Bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox went offline, and 850,000 Bitcoins vanished to never be seen again, valued at the time at $450 million. At today’s price, the value would be $4.4 billion. Top cryptocurrencies are viewed to be good investments, especially stable currencies like Bitcoin (for example, if you had invested $1000 in Bitcoin when first publicly available, you would now be £36.7 million richer). Today, there is growing concern around regulation and the ability for cryptocurrency to facilitate illegal activities. For example, the infamous dark web marketplace ‘Silk Road’ utilised Bitcoin to facilitate drug purchases before being shut down in 2014. Cryptocurrencies also have a high potential for tax evasion, high price volatility and manipulation, and there is often a potential for financial loss through data loss or cybercrime.

What is market intelligence? In its broadest sense, Market Intelligence is the capturing of information relevant to a company’s markets. In a more practical context, it is the gathering, analysis, and dissemination of information that is relevant to the market segments in which your company participates or wishes to participate. Market Intelligence is not just data. It’s the combination of data and analysis that generates information which is critical to making decisions. World-class market intelligence requires four key ingredients: 1. Data sources and field resources; 2. Analytical skills and processes to pull the data together; 3. Technology foundation and platforms to deliver, store, process, and 4. distribute the information; and 5. The support of and access to top management. As OTC Market subject matter experts, we can offer a personal service that is only possible with a boutique firm.
