AND VIBRANT OOKY NOHMAD Meet Emma Nankivell, a familiar face to many as the General Manager at Kooky Nohmad in Royston town centre. Emma is a true native of Royston, having grown up in the town and attended the local schools where she now sends her own daughter. Her passion for hospitality started at the tender age of 13 years old when she had a weekend job at a coffee shop in the Corn Exchange. Later, she worked as a wedding planner at the prestigious Sheene Mill in Melbourn for 13 years before she was tempted by an offer she couldn’t refuse! Some school friends of Emma’s approached her with an idea for a business venture and she just loved the concept of Kooky Nohmad. She was excited to bring her own hospitality expertise on board and work together to bring that concept to life. Three years on and Kooky Nohmad is now the thriving heart of Royston High Street, despite opening the day before the first lockdown of the pandemic. Emma was able to apply and adapt her knowledge of the hospitality industry to navigate through that difficult time and believes that the unprecidented success of the business has been down to core values of delivering high quality food and drink as well as customer service. These values are a part of who Emma is and have led to her and the team at Kooky winning many awards. Emma's dedication to preserving the essence of Royston shines through in every aspect of Kooky Nohmad and you'll always find a welcoming and vibrant atmosphere there, thanks to Emma's leadership.

In the dynamic world of science and technology, Aline Charpentier shines as a symbol of determination, passion, and an unwavering commitment to driving innovation. As the Head of Innovation at Bruntwood SciTech in Melbourn, Cambridgeshire, Aline embodies the fusion of science and business, working tirelessly to make the world a better place through her remarkable journey. Growing up in France, Aline's love for science was evident from an early age. She pursued her passion, earning a master's degree, but a pivotal realisation altered her path. Whilst deeply devoted to science, the traditional route of a full-time scientist didn't align with her vision of a fulfilling career. Aline sought a different direction. Through conversations with peers, Aline discovered the world of business and entrepreneurship, where she saw the potential to leverage her scientific knowledge for positive impact. With newfound business acumen, she embarked on a mission to bridge the gap between science and business, aiding entrepreneurs in transforming research into market-ready innovations at Bruntwood SciTech. Aline's career journey spans continents, from research in France to a significant role in Boston's tech transfer arena. Her move to Cambridge, UK, brought her to the heart of the biotech industry, further fueling her passion for innovation. Aline is also a vocal advocate for diversity in STEM fields, striving to inspire more women and girls to pursue careers in science. With a family that shares her passion, Aline and her husband balance their careers and family life admirably. Her story underscores the power of determination and the pursuit of one's true calling, demonstrating that science and business can compliment each other to create groundbreaking innovations. As Head of Innovation at Bruntwood SciTech, Aline Charpentier continues to leave an indelible mark on entrepreneurship and scientific advancement, inspiring us all to explore the rich potential at the intersection of science and business.

SUPPORTING OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY

Tell us a little bit about what Melbourn Science Park offers the local community? There’s a busy calendar of activities on the campus, and the majority of these are open to the public and advertised via local publications, Facebook groups or leaflet drops. Examples over the past year have included Spring Into Fitness, a fortnight of exercise and wellbeing classes in April, running in both the morning and over lunchtime. All of the classes were run by regional fitness instructors. We had yoga by Chanting Stork Yoga, Louise Jennings Pilates, Tai Chi by GMAX Academy and bootcamps by Lisa at Zone Fitness. All of these were offered as ‘tasters’ - so free of charge to attendees, with a view to us running the classes as longer term fixtures throughout the year. We’re lucky enough to have access to both green space for outdoor activities (such as the Boot Camp) and indoor space for yoga, pilates and tai chi, although we often host these outside under The Forum, our canopied area, if the weather is dry! We also launched an outdoor Christmas Market back in December - which is set to run again in 2023 - featuring local artisans selling their wares and this included everything from jewellery to toys and plants through to traditional festive treats such as mulled wine, mince pies and Christmas cake.

In 2021, Bruntwood SciTech - the 50:50 joint venture between Bruntwood and Legal & General - announced its expansion into Cambridgeshire, through the acquisition of Melbourn Science Park. Two years later, Bruntwood SciTech are running a busy calendar of local initiatives across the Science Park and beyond. Find out more about what Melbourn Science Park offers the local community.

melbournsp@bruntwood.co.uk

“We want to encourage the community to access, use and enjoy Melbourn Science Park, especially as it's been a big part of the village for so many years. It was great to see so many come to our Picnic in the Park event in July and enjoy themselves.” Matt Humphries, Commercial and Community Manager

Do you have a cafe or place to eat on the Park? Yes, we have The Moat House Cafe, which serves locally sourced food and drink. The coffee comes from Hot Numbers, the baked goods from Stir bakery in Cambridge, and all of the meals are created with local produce wherever possible, with meat from Burton's butcher in Saffron Walden. The catering is run by Wilson Vale and each day there’s a freshly prepared hot meal offering - with vegan, vegetarian and meat varieties available. The Moat House is open to the public too, who are welcome to pop by. We welcome dog walkers and families on Melbourn Science Park, with ample space under our al fresco Forum marquee, to enjoy coffee and cake, or a spot of lunch.

“Working with the team at Bruntwood SciTech on Melbourn Science Park has helped us to leverage new audiences in the community. We’re looking forward to working together and forging more opportunities to provide invaluable resources for young STEM learners across our region and beyond.” Rebecca Porter, Head of Development at Cambridge Science Centre

Have you partnered with any other local organisations? We have recently become members of Cambridge Science Centre's Executive Council, a ten year old educational charity that inspires children in their STEM learning and hosts experiential roadshows across the region. As part of this, we have worked with the team to support a series of events, with more in the pipeline. Recently, we co-hosted a workshop at Melbourn’s Summer Fete, where the CSC team helped over 50 children make miniature greenhouses from recycled CD cases containing green bean seeds - a fun and interactive science experiment teaching the importance of sustainability, biology and physics. Matt Humphries said: "Our partnership with the Cambridge Science Centre has given me a personal sense of pride in that, as a business, we are helping inspire children when it comes to science and the future exciting careers it can offer them. Our team have both sponsored and volunteered at CSC events and roadshows in and around Cambridge and are pleased to be a member of their executive council."

New steakhouse in town In the heart of historic Cambridge, where tradition meets innovation, a culinary gem has emerged – the first Flat Iron restaurant outside of London. From the moment you step inside this enchanting establishment, the vibrant atmosphere tinged with excitement welcomes you, promising an experience that transcends the ordinary. As the sun sets over the city's timeless architecture, we embarked on a journey of gastronomic delight, uncovering the layers of expertise and passion that set Flat Iron apart.

Crafting an Exceptional Introduction: Flat Iron's arrival in Cambridge has caused quite a stir, and it's no wonder why. The staggered opening – downstairs first, followed by upstairs a month later – demonstrated not only a strategic approach but a commitment to excellence. As staff found their rhythm, the professionalism and experience shone through, fostering a buzzing ambiance accompanied by carefully selected music that set the tone for the evening.

Attentive Staff, Meticulous Training: The heart of any restaurant lies within its staff, and at Flat Iron, this is evident from the moment you step through the door. The attentive and conscientious demeanor of the staff speaks volumes about their dedication. When we enquired about their training, manager Fraser proudly shared the intricacies of Flat Iron's stringent training scheme, one that has been tried and tested to ensure every guest receives a remarkable experience.

A Thoughtful Beginning:

A Symphony of Flavours:

Flat Iron's journey in Cambridge didn't begin with a grand opening; but rather a soft launch that extended an invitation to friends and family. This meticulous approach paid off, evident in the consistently excellent service that now greets every guest. As we were warmly welcomed and guided to our table, a unique detail caught our eye – the iconic meat cleaver placed in the spot typically reserved for a regular knife.

Our choices were set: the signature flat iron steak and the special bearnaise burger. A fresh bottle of water and glasses awaited us on the table, while the drinks menu enticed us with its unique cocktail creations. The attention to detail was undeniable; every aspect was curated to ensure a smooth and enjoyable dining experience

An Invitation to Indulge: Passing the whimsical popcorn machine, we were promptly presented with a tin cup brimming with complimentary beef dripping, salted popcorn – a gesture that set the tone for the feast that awaited us. With the menu in hand, we discovered familiar favourites, each bearing a story that endeared us to the brand and its ethos.

An Exquisite Culmination: As our dishes arrived, we embarked on a journey of flavours and textures that delighted the senses. The flat iron steak was masterfully seasoned and cooked, effortlessly yielding to the cleaver's touch. The burger, juicy and rich in flavour, was a testament to the kitchen's skill. Sides of truffle mac 'n' cheese, chips, bone marrow mash, creamed spinach, and smoked chilli mayo for dipping completed the symphony of perfection.

A Sweet Farewell: At the conclusion of our extraordinary meal, a thoughtful surprise awaited – two mini tokens resembling Flat Iron cleavers. Accompanying them was a note explaining that these tokens could be exchanged for a complimentary ice cream cone on departure. The Tahitian vanilla ice cream, crafted from rich Jersey cream and served in a waffle cone with chocolate shavings, provided the perfect ending note to a seamlessly executed experience.

A Local Treasure: Flat Iron's arrival in Cambridge has invigorated the city's food scene with its exceptional offerings and unwavering commitment to excellence. This culinary haven, a mere stone's throw away from the city's historic charm, has quickly become a local treasure captivating palates and hearts alike.

Capturing Winter's Beauty

As winter blankets the world in a serene layer of frost and snow, it offers a unique canvas for photographers to capture its beauty. The crisp air, delicate ice crystals, and soft light create a picturesque scene that begs to be preserved in photographs. Whether you're a seasoned photographer or just starting out, capturing the magic of winter can be an incredibly rewarding experience. As a photographer and videographer at Sanders + Jay Design and Marketing Agency, I immerse myself in a world of creativity during the working week, collaborating with an array of clients across diverse industries. However, when the weekend arrives, my lens shifts focus from professional pursuits to a more personal, passionate, and adventurous side of photography. Outside my day-to-day client work, I find solace in the great outdoors, where I explore and capture whatever inspires me. If you are venturing into the countryside, or even just to your local parkland, there can be a wealth of opportunities to capture the ever changing environment around us. Whether you're an experienced photographer or just starting out, there's something profoundly satisfying about freezing these moments in time. So, join me as we embrace the artistic freedom of winter photography—because sometimes, the most extraordinary beauty is found just outside your door.

Camera Equipment Essentials If you're new to photography, a good quality smartphone can be a fantastic tool to begin capturing winter's beauty, however if you're looking to take your photography to the next level, investing in a dedicated camera will provide you with more control and creative options. For beginners, a mirrorless or entry-level DSLR camera is a great choice. These cameras offer a blend of user-friendly features and manual controls, allowing you to experiment and learn as you go. Mirrorless cameras are particularly popular due to their compact size and advanced technology. When photographing winter landscapes, a versatile lens is essential. A wide-angle lens (typically in the range of 10-24mm) is perfect for capturing expansive winter scenes. It allows you to include both the

foreground and the distant landscape, creating a sense of depth in your images. Additionally, a macro lens can help you capture intricate details like frost on branches or snowflakes up close. A sturdy tripod is crucial for capturing sharp images, especially in low-light winter conditions. It prevents camera shake and allows you to experiment with longer exposure times for creative effects, like capturing falling snowflakes. Lastly don't forget extra batteries and memory cards, as cold temperatures can impact their performance and you don’t want to be disappointed that you missed your moment.

Rule of Thirds:

Leading Lines:

Winter light has a unique quality that can dramatically affect your photographs. The low angle of the sun during this season creates longer shadows and adds a warm, golden hue to the scene. The soft light of overcast days can also be beneficial, reducing harsh contrasts and allowing you to capture subtle textures and details. When composing your winter shots, keep in mind some basic principles of photography: Rule of Thirds: Divide your frame into a grid of nine equal sections and position key elements along these lines or at their intersections. This adds balance and visual interest to your photos. Leading Lines: Utilise natural elements like pathways, fences, or tree lines to guide the viewer's eye through your image. Foreground Interest: Include a prominent foreground element to add depth and create a sense of immersion in the scene.

Walk with Purpose When heading out for a winter walk, approach it with a photographic mindset. Pay attention to the details that might go unnoticed otherwise. The delicate frost on a leaf, the texture of snow-covered branches, or the play of light on icicles—all of these elements contribute to the magic of winter photography. Feeling inspired? SUFFERING IN SILENCE

Article written by: Robyn Tate Men’s Mindset Coach

Men’s mental health has long been a topic of discussion and a cause for concern, not because men experience mental health problems more than women do but because of the misconception that expressing emotion and asking for help is a weakness. The result of this being that a great deal of men would rather suffer in silence than risk feeling emasculated in reaching out for support. This year, the Office of National Statistics reported that 115 people die by suicide in the UK every week, with 75% of those deaths being male. Sadly, because most of us are aware of these kinds of statistics, they are no longer shocking to us. However, did you know that two-thirds of people who die by suicide are not in touch with mental health services in the year before they die? When a man feels that he should conform to a stereotypical masculine role, it can leave him feeling unable to express himself fully. The way he was responded to when he was a child will also determine how freely he can feel and show emotion. If for example, at a young age he was punished for being sad or angry or his feelings were denied in some way, he will naturally feel resistance around accessing and displaying these emotions as an adult often subconsciously. Therefore, despite increasing conversations around the importance of reaching out, it remains extremely difficult for many men to do so and men are less likely than women to acknowledge their problems and seek help. We all have a responsibility to break down this vicious cycle of social and childhood conditioning. Suffering in silence this way is a learned behaviour, modelled by men

throughout history. It was only two or three generations ago that our great grandfathers were fighting in WWII, the terrors of which can hardly be imagined by most of us living our comfortable modern-day lives. With the whole country being in the same boat, we were all encouraged to 'Keep Calm and Carry On'. One way or another, everybody had their emotional scars to bear and therefore nobody's pain was deemed more difficult than anybody else's. This resulted in silence for many. As a nation it was easier to sweep these dreadful memories under the carpet; suppressed emotion and its consequences inadvertently passed down for generations to come. It’s normal to want to avoid uncomfortable feelings or memories and it might seem logical that doing this will make them go away but the opposite is true. When your thoughts are left unaddressed, they pile up in your mind, causing serious mental clutter. You may not recognise this as being the cause of stress, anxiety or depression but repressed emotions regularly manifest themselves as mental health problems. More subtly, they can also show up as anger, nervousness or feelings of emptiness. Research has also linked emotional repression to decreased immune system function. Another outcome of blocking out your uncomfortable feelings, is that the same will apply to feelings of happiness or joy; the natural highs of life can only be fully felt when you are ready to accept the whole spectrum of emotions. Your thoughts and feelings are there for a reason, especially the ones you perceive as negative, they are trying to tell you something and should be met with

curiosity rather than dismissal. Feelings of anger are telling you where your boundaries should be, sadness signals a need to grieve a loss of some kind and fear shows you where you can push yourself for growth. Jealousy indicates where you want to be in life and when you feel guilt, know that this is a sign for you to align your actions with your values. The point of talking about your thoughts and feelings is to give them the attention they so desperately crave, so that you can externalise them, diffuse their power over you and ultimately free yourself from your mind. There is always a reason why you think, feel and act the way you do and making sense of this will allow you to understand yourself, so that you can move forward with greater clarity and self-compassion. Taking that step to become more attuned with yourself and working on your personal development will help you to improve your self-awareness, experience more rich and meaningful relationships and feel wholly confident in who you are and what you stand for. We all have a part to play in our own mental health. By taking full responsibility for yourself, finally breaking your silence and reaching out for help, you can take back control of your life. I encourage any man who is suffering in silence to embark on his own journey of self-discovery, to seek out the liberation that lies on the other side of speaking his truth and to understand that there is great strength to be found in his vulnerability.

Whether it’s for a whistle stop weekend away or a lengthier exploration, we’ve compiled a list of our favourite 10 capital cities to add to your bucket list for a visit.

LONDON

ROME

If we are talking capital cities then where better to start with than with our very own?! Just a short train journey from our part of the world, London can be easy to overlook or just take for granted. We would encourage you to take the time to visit like a tourist and really absorb the heritage, culture and attractions on offer. Utilising the 160 year old London Underground, you can easily get from A to B around the city and pack plenty in to a busy weekend. Take in a show at one of the theatres in the famous west end, grab a bite to eat in China Town and perhaps even hop on the London Eye for a spectacular view from above.

The people of Rome are widely known for their inviting hospitality and love for their city so will welcome you with open arms when you visit. Located in central Italy, the city is bursting at the seams with art and culture as well as historic landmarks such as the breathtaking Trevi Fountain. The many piazzas are bustling with a vibrant atmosphere and the local cuisine is arguably the best in the world. Rome is a pilgrimage destination for many followers of the Catholic faith who each year flock to the Vatican City, where the pope resides.

COPENHAGEN

BANGKOK

Think open, green spaces, gorgeous heritage architecture and a relaxed and trendy vibe. Located on the waterfront, the cuisine is mainly geared towards the inclusion of the freshest fish - not forgetting the abundance of incredible bakeries with the most delicious (you guessed it) pastries that will ever pass your lips! Denmark’s capital is steeped with history and culture and boasts many natural beauty spots, just off the beaten track. Top tip - For some unforgettable memories, pay a visit to Tivoli Garden; a 19th-century amusement park with its antique roller coaster and live entertainment programme.

Jetting across to Thailand’s capital, get ready for a vibrant explosion of colour, culture and warm hospitality. You can find tranquil escapes from the urban hustle and bustle by exploring the city’s green spaces, like the stunning Lumphini Park, or you can embrace the busy atmosphere and sensory delights of street food vendors, markets, cultural festivals and shows. Bangkok offers excellent value for travellers, with a wide range of accommodation, dining, and entertainment options to suit various budgets. The city is home to stunning historical sites such as the Grand Palace and you can even to enjoy a river cruise on the Chao Phraya River to see some of Bangkok's iconic landmarks from the water.

PARIS

EDINBURGH

Although suited to groups of all ages and sizes, we really recommend this one for couples. There is something truly magical about Paris that just makes it so romantic. Perhaps it’s the famous Love Lock Bridge, the tables for two along the candlelit street bistros, the intimate and quaint feel of the architecture or a mixture of it all - it just has that ‘je ne sais quoi’. If you’re a follower of fashion then be sure to bring your pocket money because you won’t be able to resist hitting the world famous shops and our top tip for a taste of history is a visit to the mysterious Catacombs beneath the city.

Up to the Highlands for our next stop. Edinburgh is renowned for its stunning architecture, with a well-preserved medieval Old Town and a neoclassical New Town. Known as the world’s most haunted city and full of museums, it’s a big hit with history buffs and culture vultures alike. If you like a tipple then get yourself booked onto a whisky tasting tour and learn about Scotland’s nectar (whilst sampling a dram or two along the way!). You’ll discover a variety of culinary delights across the city and you can’t leave without trying an authentic dish of haggis, neeps and tatties! If time allows, we would recommend leaving the city for a few hours to take in the surrounding countryside with a trip to Loch Ness, St. Andrews or the Highlands.

DUBLIN

MARRAKECH

One of the best things about Dublin is that it’s full of Irish people! Dubliners are known for their warmth, good humour and craic which will immediately help you to feel at home in the city. Plenty of history and culture to take in - notably Trinity College and Dublin Castle. Night time Ghost Tours are a fun way to explore the historic landmarks along the cobbled streets, then head over to Temple Bar for theatres, pubs and street performers. Johnny Fox’s; the oldest and highest pub in Ireland, is just outside the city and well worth a visit. You’ll be entertained by traditional Irish music and dancers, served a simple meal and probably have the best night of your life! Top tip - head to the side bar of a pub called ‘The Brazen Head’ early on a Sunday lunchtime and try to bag yourself a table. Locals will take it in turns to stand up, sing a song, play an instrument or tell a hilarious story. As more Guinness and whiskey is consumed, lips get looser and the tales get funnier. By the time you leave, you’ll be aching from laughing so much - you just can’t help but get absorbed by the Irish charm and banter.

Located in Morocco, Marrakech is a city that offers a rich blend of history, culture, and vibrant experiences. Get lost in the labyrinth of the medina, where you can explore traditional, bustling markets (souks) and shop for spices, textiles, ceramics, and local crafts. Explore the ruins of the El Badi Palace, known for its impressive architecture and historical significance or even take a day trip to the nearby Atlas Mountains for stunning scenery, hiking opportunities, and visits to traditional Berber villages. When it comes to food, prepare to be blown away by the rich flavours of Moroccan cuisine, from tagines and couscous to delicious pastries and mint tea. Our top tip is to embrace and try traditional dishes at local restaurants as well as street food stalls - you’ll be pleased you did!

BUENOS AIRES

LISBON

Over in Argentina, South America, you will find a vibrant city full of colour, excitement and activity! Being the birthplace of tango, you can experience this passionate dance at tango clubs and view performances throughout the city. You could even attend a traditional milonga; a social dance event where locals and tourists gather to dance tango. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, indulge in Argentine cuisine, including succulent steaks, empanadas, and dulce de leche desserts, at traditional parrillas (steakhouses) and local eateries around the city. Buenos Aires is also a well known hub for street art, with bright murals and graffiti adorning many of the neighborhoods, especially in Palermo and Villa Crespo - well worth a visit to see it in the flesh.

The city of Lisbon is situated in a valley, which means the views to be had from the surrounding hills (with a coffee in hand) are truly breathtaking. Lisbon has a unique style, with quaint cobbled streets, mosaic tiles and traditional buildings standing side by side with modern architecture. Trams run throughout Lisbon, making getting around effortless and a trip to the sandy beaches a breeze. The city's proximity to the coast means that there's excellent fresh seafood to be found in its vibrant restaurants. And for a delicious sweet treat, visit the local bakeries and cafes to sample traditional Portuguese pastries like pasteis de nata (custard) and bolas de Berlim (filled doughnuts). The diverse style of the city allows for a relaxed afternoon browsing the craft markets followed by an evening sipping cocktails and watching the sun set at one of the trendy rooftop terrace bars.

From the end of Jepps Lane you will arrive at Fish Hill Square. You will find two narrow, parallel streets, Fish Hill and Market Hill, with a block of buildings in between, where market stalls once stood. This was the new market place after it moved from its earlier site a little further to the west. The old County Court building stands proudly overlooking the square, surmounted by the Royal Arms. Wander up Market Hill to the end of George Lane, to the right, is a tiny cobbled street which was once the location of the Plough; Royston’s smallest pub. As you move up Market Hill, the passage to your left, between the doctors’ surgery and the library, focuses on the American memorial in Priory gardens. Between the buildings is the sculpture ‘Unity’, which represents town twinning. Further up the hill to your right, near to the end of Angel Pavement, once stood yet another pub called The Red Lion.
