INTERVIEW

with JULIET ELLIOTT Who are you, where ARE you at the moment and what are you up to? Hey! I’m in Devon, I moved here last year. I just got back from a walk with my Dad who has been visiting us and I’m having a beer before packing for our camping trip tomorrow. We’re off to Cornwall to ride BMX and go surfing for a few days. What makes you so good at riding fixed? What makes me so good at riding fixed? Ha! Well I don’t know that I particularly am, I just like doing it. Could you tell us about the last two competitions/ jams or road trips you went to? The last two competitions, hmm, let me see, do you mean fixed? If so, well the last time I raced was at the London Nocturne, where I did my first fixed gear crit, well my first crit of any kind. It was such a blast, I was smiling and grimacing the whole way round the course – smiling because it was hella fun and grimacing as I don’t think my lungs have quite healed from the years of smoking they endured. Before that, well I guess it was when I went to France with Met Helmets and rode the mini velodrome near Toulouse for their Met Fat contest. Do you like to ride street or Minidrome more? Are you better at one more than the other? All of them! I just love riding my bikes, all kind of bikes, all kind of stuff.

We really enjoy your edits, who is Making these? Can we expect some more from yoU.. I’m hoping to put together some new edits, GoPro just sent me a camera to play around with, but I haven’t found the time for a while, I’ve just been too busy trying to pay the rent. It’s gonna get done soon though! I know that some riders get scared of big jumps and obstacles! How do you push yourself? I also get scared off stuff which can be really frustrating sometimes. If it’s really too frightening, well, you shouldn’t go for it if you’re shitting yourself, it’s not a good idea, but if you’re just a little bit scared I find a good way of motivating myself is to imagine how stoked I’ll feel if I make the trick, land it or whatever. You inspire a lot of Girl riders what Would you tell them? There are a bunch of riders who inspire me too, I love checking out what other folk are up to, particularly female BMXers. If I inspire anyone myself, I think that’s awesome and I’m honoured. How important is your crew? who do you hang out with.. My crew, hmm, well as I live in Devon, there aren’t that many people to ride with, in fact, I don’t really know many people here. My ‘crew’ would be my girlfriends in London, they don’t really ride but that’s who I like hanging out with when I can.

What is the next of your projects? My next project is already in progress – I want to get super fit, strong, healthy and fast, and I want to win some races! Last question; any shout outs? Thanks to Charge Bikes, Vans and Met, all of whom have been very good to me, and of course to Dave, who has been even better.

Thanks to Juliet and Dave for his photos! I met Juliet around 2007 in London, where we became friends. She was one of the first fixed gear riders and I remember her trying each trick over and over again until she was hurting herself, but would not give up until she managed to do it- and she always did- that is what I call determination! Juliet also was , together with SuperTed, one of the first people to be sponsored by Charge Bikes . During the last two months of travelling I met some female fixed gear riders which really seemed to be inspired by her and got quite excited when I told them about her, which was quite funny! I am happy to finally have Juliet on the cover of SOFB and stoked to see Dave becoming a sick photographer!! Greg Falski

Anyway thanks to RINNG, CHOOSE and GRIME bikes it was possible to make it and the plan was to fly to THE GRIME base in NYC and stay for a couple of days, after discussing it with wonka and krillz we tought the best would be to make the FIRST COAST TO COAST FIXEDGEAR FREESTYLE TOUR, and the name had to be COAST TO GHOST cause we really didn’t know if it was going to happen or even when it was going to end. We had the best crew we couldn’t possibly think of with a 3 europeans, 2 japanese, 4 americans and the BEST DOG EVER, SHADES. the whole tour would have been 100% sucessefull if nothing had happened to shades once we got to SF, but it happened and i wont write anything else then..

Ricardo Lino “AS for the Redbull Ride+Style it was packed with riders from All over the world, we had japs, thais, euros, koreans and off course americans and everyone wanted to show the world why they were invited to be there, for me it was really fun to see that fixedgear freestyle is going in the right way with people going for their own thing, with original styles and tricks and it was even funnier to see Matt Reyes with such steez on that course like if he was riding a chainless bike in the clouds!!

This issue features the incredible HummingBird created by CHERUBIM. This guys have an amazing approach when it comes to design bikes. The HummingBird is already more than one year old and in our opinion it did not get the hype and attention this masterpiece deserves. So please check it out in full resolution in the SOFB!

Technology and art, future and past, race and culture, conflict of these leads to the new innovation.

43

Some times we can find the way to the future by looking at the history. In the past 200 years of bicycle history, plenty of futuristic invention came in and out. Some of them were very innovative and also practical, but fell behind the generation. This “Humming Bird” is inspired by Buckminster Fller’s Dymaxion Car, one of the greatest industrial design born in 1932.

CRIT

The Amsterdam Super Crit is an unsanctioned fixed gear criterium contested over 20 laps on a 2.2 km long, hard and technical circuit. The Dutch wind and flat harbour area makes the criterium a tough race to compete. Over 40 international and national riders contented the first edition of Amsterdam Super Crit. Among them were some of the strongest fixed gear criterium riders and teams of Europe. ASC 2013 is the first edition of an annual event.

TELL ME PLEASE HOW YOUR SHOP WAS BORN, AND HOW THE CREW MET... The idea for a fixed gear shop came up about 2008/2009 after our visits to berlin(keirin) and new york(king kog). I am riding fixed since 2003 and i was always difficult to find nice parts and i thought vienna could use something like a fixed gear boutique. After a long search I finally found a nice cheap location and opened FixDich in april 2010. In april this year I moved to a bigger space and Sailor joined me in the shop. We rode as messengers together back in the day and worked for years in the same workshop. COULD YOU TELL ME PLEASE ABOUT COMPETITIONS AND EVENTS AROUND THE SHOP Me and some friends are organizing the “hanky panky” goldsprints as well as skid and other fixed-related contests in and round vienna from time to time. WHATS NEXT In the Future we are moving again to another space, cause our space now is just temporarily and we’re moving together with a second shop from a friend. The rest is a surprise ;-)

73

WHERE DO YOU THINK FIXED GEAR WILL BE IN A YEAR FROM NOW? Fixed is going to be around for a long time, as well as the people will find out that different bikes for different terrains are great. In Vienna people are starting to get a training licenses and riding in the local velodrome as well as going on mountains and trips around vienna fixed. Big Shout out to the RADROWDIES Vienna B.C. - the dopest bicycle club in the world, Hermes messengers and my love B.

You live in the UK- how this Is influencING you and your work? Currently, i am living in a small town called Wellingborough. To be honest, there is not much what would be a direct influence on myself or my work... but lucky, there’s a solid crew in Northampton and there are some well good guys who I try to catch up from time to time. Also, there London and Leeds are not too far away and that’s where the best things are happening! I am loving what is happening in these two cities in the matter of fixed gear riding... whats your favourite time of day light to shoot in? The sunny one! hehehehe but jokes aside.. I never look at it this way, but obviously early evenings with gentle and soft golden light are always the best to snap some great photos! Who is your favourite rider to shoot with? I don’t have one and most faved rider to shoot with.. I believe that every rider has got something amazing and unique to present through his riding style and skill. Simon Andraca is mad stylish, Sol Smith is fearless and crazy skillful, Tim Pulleyn is amazing in fixed hill climbing,,, i could make this list going on and on and on...

85

Film or digital? I tfully digital... i have never had a chance to shoot on film which i really regret. i hope i could give it a try one day. But the choice is pretty obvious 1000 snaps vs 36 frames... sounds lame, but that’s reality... You are riding yourself, how much does this affect the way you look at the sport tHrough your lens? yes, I am trying to ride as much as I only can, I’m nowhere near the top guys I usually go on a photoshoots with, but I am trying my best! Riding on a bikes makes me relaxed, even if sometimes it’s a sweaty session. Riding in big cities is a huge fun to me, as well, gotta love pissing off drivers in lines on red lights. Your camera bag? - how heavy IS IT? Well, it is not that heavy at all. I like to keep my gear simple. I am not a big fan of an external light, so don’t need to carry tons of flashlights, tripods, batteries and so on. Plus, I don’t see point in having a hundred lenses.. or some other funny gadgets. Another advantage of a light bag is being mobile with easiness and comfort. There are days when I need to walk for miles, climb hills or simply ride a bike for a longer while... Minimal setup? Canon 5d mark II camera body + canon 70-200mm f2.8 mark II lens - I really don’t need anything more than this little setup

Dream location TO SHOOT this year? I would love to go to the Orkney Islands. that would be an ultimate North Race ride with the North Race crew... there’s a plan, so let’s keep our fingers crossed! If you could give A younger you AN advice on his way to the first Photo project what would you tell him? Staying focused on the composition of the photos.. Everything is important, from light, thought sharpness to content, but proper framing is a top skill Any final thoughts you would like to add? I would like to thank to all the riders for them amazing effort to make sure that photos are gonna be top notch! and obviously, my girlfriend - Natalie, for her divine capacity of patience to my bike madness... follow me at https://www.facebook.com/szymon.nieborak / http://www.flickr.com/photos/skyhistoire / http://instagram.com/delayedpleasure

Levente Klara and his friends recorded his 2040 mile-long bike ride through six countries, from Madrid to Budapest. Cycle Me Home is more than just a film, it’s about being an active part of a strong community.

Photos CYCLE ME HOME Text: Greg Falski, Levente Klara

107

The movie about the Madrid-Budapest trip premiered in budapest last spring, with a massive party, we hosted an album launch party with Dusty Kid who gave us his newest album as soundtrack. 1000 people, 3 screenings a row...incredible night. We got more and more invitations from all over the world asking us t bring the movie to their place. so we did.. first berlin, where i met stefan from 8bar and on the next day we found ourselves on the road, riding together to budapest. the cmh team didn’t want to stop and touring with the movie seemed to be a good excuse to travel all the time. we organised the LEAP tour, and basically we haven’t stopped yet. Obviously we brought our cameras everywhere and we documented everything we saw: beautiful nature, huge cities, mad races, crazy nights, thats what we will show in our next movie, it’s our way to show “this is how we roll”. the thing what we do is kind of an exchange, we visit people we haven’t met before and we say goodbye as friends.

I always get surprised how the global cyclist community sticks together, thats what i experience all the time, everywhere i go, i find open doors and there is always a couch, a beer and a story to share. thats why we keep on doing our project, whatever it will become, I’m sure the main goal of it will always be one simple thing: to ride together. the first CMH movie will be released on dvd in Budapest on 26th july. www.cyclemehome.com Music SELECTED BY Dusty Kid
