...a brief history
In May 1310 Bishop Bek of Durham signed a charter proclaiming: "to our town of Stockton a market upon every Wednesday for ever" - and since then the market has brought Stockton's High Street alive with a blaze of noise and colour every market day. Our famous market has now spent more than 700 years proving everyone loves a bargain. Centrally located in the High Street, our market is one of the largest in the UK with over 150 stalls, held every Wednesday and Saturday - rain or shine! A smaller market is held each Friday. There are also open-air markets in Billingham on Mondays and in Thornaby on Thursdays. So come along and bag a bargain!
And don’t forget the Shambles! The Shambles Market Hall is a Grade 2 Listed Building in the centre of the widest High Street in the UK and has been extensively revamped to provide a convenient and beautiful outlet for small businesses. 10 | Stockton markets - come along and bag a bargain!
Celebrating our 700th birthday! Last year we celebrated the market’s 700th anniversary in style. Lord Bishop of Durham, Right Reverend Dr NT Wright signed a new ceremonial charter and unveiled a plaque commemorating the market's 700th birthday. But that wasn’t all – the high street was the scene for some amazing medieval entertainment, our traders got in the spirit by dressing in clothes from throughout the ages and the Stockton Soapbox, where local people had one minute to talk about any issue they wanted, was a roaring success.
