‘’What have you done in

school today?’ 20th September 2019

Dear Parents, It has been another fantastic week here at the Prep and I continue to be so impressed by the way in which our pupils approach school life. This week I have seen new lessons take place in music with Deaf Hands, sport with Deaf Active, BSL Level 1 classes start, our first football and cross country fixtures, climate change activities, instrument try outs… alongside new pupils starting, parents viewing the school and general, normal school life! To say the children get up to a lot is an understatement so well done all! Just a word on behavior around the school. We have, quite rightly, high expectations of behavior from our youngest pupils to the oldest. We follow a fairly simple process: Warning - Sanction - Headmaster This system does work and is easy for the children to follow. Please trust that we do not go out of our way to discipline and our ideal scenario is that we would not need to. However, we work with under 12s… it is going to happen. We thank you for reinforcing our school message at home Mr J Webster, Headmaster

Supporting Macmillan Coffee Morning On Friday, 27th September we will be holding a cake sale in support of Macmillan. We would be grateful of any cake donations, home made or store bought. If homemade, could you please write a list of ingredients used due to food allergies. Cakes can be brought in from Wednesday, 25th September. During break on the 27th, we will be selling cakes with a suggested donation of £1. The children don’t need to bring in a break that day. We will also be selling cakes after school on the playground. Thank you in advance for your support.

Sport Well done to the U11 Football team who won their first league match of the season against Netherton Moss. The boys played very well and the final score of 3- 0 was a great way to start their new season. Man of the Match was Harley Roberts and the goals came from Harley and Michael Johnston.

Reception Class Rugbytots The children thoroughly enjoyed meeting Colin their specialist rugby teacher. They worked on team building and navigating their body through a space. The children developed their balance and coordination skills.

Next week Next week we will be looking out for signs of Autumn, and will include an observational walk and artwork. 6

Year 1 Maths This week Year 1 have been learning about grouping in our Maths lessons. They have worked as a team with concrete resources to build on their understanding of grouping by colour and shape.

Next week Next week we will be building on our knowledge of counting forward, backwards, one more and one less. 7

Year 2 Rugbytots Year Two enjoyed their first Rugby Tots session of the year this week. It was great to see that they remembered and demonstrated many of the skills that they learnt last year. They worked well together as a team and followed instructions well.

Next week The class will start their Science topic of ‘Living Things and Their Habitats’ 8

Year 2 Science Club Year 2 Science Club had great fun this week building structures using spaghetti and marshmallows. They produced some great designs and learnt how to make their structures stronger. They thoroughly enjoyed eating the leftover marshmallows too!

Next week we will be investigating how light travels.

Year 3 English During our English lessons this week,Year 3 have been studying ‘Voices in the Park’ by Anthony Browne. They studied the first two voices and analysed the characters in the different chapters. In the pictures you can see the children looking at the settings from the second voice and describing the differences portrayed by Anthony Browne. After finding these difference they tried to explain why the settings changed so dramatically, which they realised was down to the character’s mood.

Next week Next week the children will be looking at the Roman invasion of Britain and the battles they had with Queen Boudicca! 10

Year 4 RE This week, the children started to explore the work of L.S Lowry, focusing specifically on his pieces linked to World War Two. They practised adopting Lowry’s style by drawing matchstick figures. The figures will be added to a World War Two landscape which the children will design over the next few lessons.

Next week Next week, the children’s Literacy work will based around ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. They will be developing their understanding of similes and metaphors and writing character descriptions. 11

Year 5 English This week in English the children have been building towards writing their own autobiography, the children were fantastic in sharing everything there is to know about themselves before putting it onto paper. They really enjoyed telling me about their hobbies and interests as well as sharing some funny stories from their childhood. The children spent some time creating a self-portrait to accompany their autobiography.

Next week Next week the children will learn what happened during Egyptian times during mummification! 12

6G Theme Through our theme lesson this week, we started to explore myths and legends, acting out Homer’s Trojan War as a class. There were some very convincing performances and the battle was as gruelling as the 10-year war in the story.

Next week Next week in Maths, we will be exploring written methods of calculation for multiplication and division, working on our accuracy. 13

6M Theme This week in Theme, we have looked at what democracy is and how in 508BC democracy began in Athens. We compared the different systems of democracy and if they were fair or not. The children then compared the ancient and modern democracies and discussed the similarities and differences. As a class, we had a debate about if prisoners should be allowed to vote. The children enjoyed this task and all showed excellent debating skills.

Next week Next week in R.E., we will be looking at who are role models are and inspirational people.. 14

Gardening Club The gardeners continue to be busy, getting on top of the garden and raised beds that went ‘wild’ in the summer. Brushing, weeding and tidying will be top of the list of jobs for many weeks to come. The first of our seeds were sown. We have planted winter lettuce and other salad leaves. The children collected the abundant ‘worm juice’ to add to the watering can, which they then watered the seeds with. Ruby Rose was lucky enough to harvest several tomatoes, which were added to the lunchtime salad. Mrs Howat harvested some basil that has been growing over the summer thanks to the ‘aquaponic pod.’ She made pesto for her evening meal. The gardeners have asked for the recipe, and hopefully they will get a chance to make it themselves.

Friends of Merrilocks Park As a school, we are supporting the work of the Friends of Merrilocks park - a group of local residents and volunteers who are transforming the park back to its former glory. A great deal of work has already taken place, including a new noticeboard, new benches and the clearing of the borders and paths. Pupils in Gardening Club have helped and will be returning to the park over the coming months to continue with the enhancement. Volunteers are welcome to help on Saturdays from On Saturday 21st September, there is a Coffee Morning and I am hoping parents will 2pm to 3pm. Just turn up with gloves and a shovel or spade! Sessions take place every week (weather be able to attend and support the event. permitting). Children are encouraged to attend also.
