Backyard composting

Composting is a great way to manage yard waste and some food scraps at home.
Residents may compost leaves, grass, fruit and vegetable scraps, eggshells, loose leaf tea and paper tea bags, coffee grounds and paper coffee filters.
Do not place meat, bones, dairy products, eggs or pet waste in backyard bins. These items can attract pests and create foul odors.
The city has a few basic rules for backyard composting to help prevent potential issues: • Compost bins must be made of durable material such as wood, wire mesh, plastic or concrete block. • Bins must be enclosed on all sides and have a lid. • Bins should be no greater than 150 cubic feet in volume. • Bins must be in the backyard, at least 15 feet from any house and at least five feet from any trail, street, alley or property line adjacent to a city park.
