Clues given to various parks

Each week in January a different New Year's gnome will be placed in one of the city's parks. Once a gnome is placed in a park, it will remain there until the end of January.

Clues will be given to help locate the different gnomes each week on Tuesday morning through Facebook and Instagram (@stlouispark), as well as GovDelivery emails.

It is said that those who snap a photo with one of the New Year's gnomes will have some of its good luck transferred to them! Share your photos with us through social media by posting them in the comments section of our weekly clue posts.

Michael Dickinson Monkey Island (Beehive)

I remember having class picnics from Fern Hill School, where I attended 4th and 5th grade in 1950 – 1951. The picnics were at “Monkey Island” during the last week of school. Monkey Island was a small island surrounded by a moat, a couple of yards wide and 2 – 3 feet deep. A little stone footbridge was there so you could walk to the island. At the south end of the park was the “beehive” grill with some stone picnic tables and benches.

In the summer of 1950, my mom and the neighbors, the Sanfords, went to the park for a picnic. We packed all our food into my toy wagon and pulled it walking single file down Minnetonka Boulevard about 4 – 5 blocks. When we arrived, my mom discovered the potato salad was missing. First, we thought she had left it at home, but then we noticed a stray dog hanging around with potato salad all over its face! Turns out the dog kept pace with the wagon I was pulling and ate it all the way to the park. The dog didn’t get to the wieners, so we roasted them in the “beehive” grill and had only the hot dogs and buns for our picnic. Ever since that day, we refer to the Minnetonka Boulevard bridge over Highway 100 as the “potato salad bridge”.

After the training, residents serve as ambassadors in the community and share what they learn with family, friends and neighbors. This might include helping a neighbor understand what can and can’t go in their recycling or volunteering at an event to help attendees properly sort recyclables. Annual tree sales

Help increase our city’s tree canopy by adding trees to your landscape! Starting March 1, visit slp-tree-sale.myshopify.com to order and pay for your trees as part of the city’s annual tree sale. Trees are $35 each; a maximum of three trees per property may be purchased. A preview of this year’s trees will be available mid-February on the website. Tree sale pickup will be Saturday, May 2, 8 a.m. – noon or Monday, May 4, 5 – 7 p.m. at the Municipal Service Center, 7305 Oxford St.

Need a new tree but not ready to plant it yourself? You’re in luck! The city offers a full-service tree sale option where the city covers a portion of the planting costs. Total cost can be as low as $35, depending on your location in the city or income eligibility. There is also a cost share for those who have had an ash tree removed due to the emerald ash borer. Visit treecanopyslp.myshopify.com early next spring to find out more and reserve your tree.

Tree pruning

Late winter is a great time to prune your trees. Tree species such as elm, oak and crabapple are susceptible to diseases that are transferred by insects, making the dormant season a great time for pruning. All tree maintenance in St. Louis Park must be performed by a contractor licensed by the city. To view a list of licensed contractors, visit www.stlouisparkmn.gov/trees.

Evergreen Award winners

Each year, the City of St. Louis Park presents the Evergreen Awards to recognize properties with uniquely designed and well-maintained landscapes.

The Evergreen Award winners selected from 2025's 15 nominees were: Nancy Wolf – 4246 Ottawa Ave. S. (traditional landscape category), and Lee Conliffe and Katherine Dowd – 2845 Inglewood Ave. S. (alternative landscape category). Each winner received an Evergreen Award Winner sign to display in their boulevard for two weeks, along with an award certificate presented by the mayor at a St. Louis Park City Council meeting.

For more information about the program, visit the natural resources page on the city's website www.stlouisparkmn.gov.

Rainwater Rewards

Funding available for landscaping projects! It’s not too early to start thinking about spring landscaping projects that can help manage stormwater. The city’s Rainwater Rewards program offers funding and technical guidance to residential property owners who install projects that do at least one of the following:

Protect and restore stormwater by capturing pollutants in rainwater runoff, increase the watershed’s ability to store water, preserve and restore native plant and wildlife communities, or protect and preserve groundwater quality and quantity. Project examples include rain gardens, rain barrels, permeable pavement, green roofs and other innovative stormwater management practices. Program benefits include cost share, guidance with management practices, selecting designers and contractors, and future planning.

The program is available to residential properties in St. Louis Park. Applications are accepted year-round while funding remains. To learn more visit www.stlouisparkmn.gov/rainwater-rewards, or contact Erick Francis, water resources manager, at efrancis@stlouisparkmn.gov or 952.924.2690.

St. Louis Park Friends of the Arts (FotA)

Friends of the Arts is a nonprofit community organization that has been building the community through the arts since 1995, with a mission to support, promote and enhance the arts in St. Louis Park to bring people together. Friends of the Arts connects people and organizations around the arts, shares arts-related information and resources, supports local artists and coordinates community arts programs.

Arts for Life Scholarship

ALL AGES

The Arts for Life Scholarship program is rooted in our belief that creativity is inherent in all people, and the arts should be affordable and accessible. We know that when you invest in creativity, the community reaps the rewards. Scholarships are awarded quarterly to St. Louis Park residents with financial need to enrich their lives through a creative experience. Funding is available for private music lessons, art class enrollment fees and materials, and other arts activities that develop creativity. Application deadlines: March 5, June 5, Sept. 5 and Dec. 5. Apply today at slpfota.org/artsforlife.

St. Louis Park Art Fair Application

The St. Louis Park Art Fair is made possible by a partnership between Friends of the Arts and the City of St. Louis Park, as well as by the event founder and coordinator, St. Louis Park resident Alysha Boie. As a local maker, she envisioned organizing a local event to celebrate local artists and build community pride. She applied for and received a St. Louis Park Arts & Culture Grant to put on the inaugural St. Louis Park Art Fair at the ROC with fiscal sponsorship from Friends of the Arts.

Thanks to Alysha’s vision, leadership and management, St. Louis Park has a growing art fair, bringing the community together and celebrating local artists and makers! Last year, we welcomed Erin VonRuden as our new art fair coordinator. Erin is a St. Louis Park resident who has been involved in the Art Fair since its inception. If interested in sponsorship or volunteer opportunities, contact Erin at slpartfair@slpfota.org. Apply as an artist at www.slpfota.org/artfair.

Be A Hydrant Hero

The St. Louis Park Fire Department would like to remind homeowners and businesses with fire hydrants on or near their property to please shovel the snow around the fire hydrant after each snowfall and keep the hydrant clear of plant overgrowth during the summer.

There are roughly 1,700 fire hydrants in St. Louis Park, and although firefighters remove snow around the hydrants after a snowfall, they can't always clean them all in a timely manner. This is where you can help. Volunteer to become a Hydrant Hero and keep the hydrants around your homes and businesses clear of snow in the winter and free of plant overgrowth in the summer. Interested volunteers can adopt a hydrant at www.hydranthero.org. Choose a hydrant, click on the “Adopt me” link and fill out the registration form – you can even give your hydrant a name! For questions, contact Lieutenant Bob Hampton at bhampton@stlouisparkmn.gov or 952.924.2599.

Senior Community Services volunteer

Volunteers are a valuable addition and allow Senior Community Services to serve more participants in their Home and Outdoor Maintenance (HOME) program. Volunteers tackle outdoor chores as the leaves start to change, clear ice and snow when the flakes begin to fly and help with an expanding technology support program.

Email home@seniorcommunity.org or call 952.746.4046 with questions.

Senior Community Services is a nonprofit organization with a mission to innovate and deliver services that meet the changing needs of older adults and their caregivers.
