ALUMNI RELATIONS & Development

The St Leonards Archives are a trove of fascinating photographs and documents, which record the memories and experiences of former pupils, together forming the vibrant and varied history of our School. This image was taken in the 1950s, and the iconic skyline no doubt will spark nostalgic sentiments amongst our community of Seniors as they look back on their time living and learning in the town of St Andrews. I hope that you will enjoy perusing this edition of the Gazette and discovering the ways in which life at St Leonards has evolved over the decades, but also how its ethos and commitment to preparing pupils, Ad Vitam, for life, has remained constant. Of course, the photographs in the Archives are brought alive by the spoken stories and reminiscences shared by Seniors who return to the campus for tours and other events. These events have been a particular highlight of the year – after the enforced hiatus due to the pandemic, it has been fantastic to return to afternoon teas, lunches and dinners. Summer of Celebration

With the easing of restrictions, the School hosted a series of Summer Term events for pupils, parents, staff and Seniors to celebrate life at St Leonards and to enable our community to meet the new Head, Simon Brian. For Seniors, the Summer of Celebration kicked off with an afternoon tea in the Green Room, followed by a walking tour of the grounds and the chance to look through select memorabilia from the Archives. Reminiscences were exchanged and shared over sandwiches, freshly-baked cakes and scones. A few weeks later, some of our former pupils, Honorary Seniors and longstanding members of staff enjoyed a black tie supper with the Head. Guests enjoyed a menu of coq au vin with dauphinoise potatoes and provencal vegetables, followed by fruit tartlets decorated with the St Leonards crest and served with lemon custard cream. The supper was bookended with the annual Art Exhibition and Year 13 Leavers’ Concert, creating a special opportunity for new and established Seniors to share memories of their time at school and celebrate their continued connection with St Leonards. Many thanks to Lauren Hastie (Head Girl 2020-21) for entertaining the Art Exhibition guests with a superb musical set. As the Summer Term drew to a close, the Head hosted a lunch for Seniors, Honorary Seniors and former staff. Attendees enjoyed drinks and discussions in the Green Room, followed by a delicious three-course meal in Restaurant 1877 – a hearty red lentil soup, followed by a carvery with all the trimmings and a spectacular sticky toffee pudding to round it off. We look forward to connecting with Seniors and hosting more events, both on campus and further afield, in the coming months. Trips down Memory Lane

This year, we have welcomed Seniors from across the globe back to St Leonards for trips down memory lane. It is always fascinating to hear the tales and stories, and the ways in which St Leonards has changed (and, in other ways, remained the same) over the years. Pictured is Charlotte Hardy Hall (née Nelson, BE 1979-83) who visited with her daughter, Iona, for a tour of Bishopshall. Whilst the recently-renovated house looks very different from when she was at school, she did manage to spot herself in the old house photographs which still adorn the walls! Senior Speakers

If you would be willing to share your knowledge and experiences with our current pupils at an assembly, workshop, lecture or masterclass, be that virtual or in person, please contact the Seniors Office. St Leonards prepares its pupils, Ad Vitam, for life. It is therefore apposite to welcome back Seniors to speak to our current pupils about their experiences beyond the walls, and to share their insights into a plethora of different sectors, topics and adventures. This year we welcomed author, professor and St Leonards Senior Dr Fiona Woollard (1994-2000) from the University of Southampton to speak to Year 12 about the ‘Ethics of Doing and Allowing Harm’. Her thought-provoking assembly covered a wide range of topics – everything from pregnancy to lockdown and driverless cars – and encouraged the pupils to think critically about their actions. Our students also benefited from the insights of Aleksandr Gershberg (2017) and Alexsey Gulyaev (2017) who recently graduated from courses in Business Management at the University of Exeter and City, University of London and Loughborough University respectively. Alexey and Aleksander spoke to our current Business Management students about their experiences of studying the subject at university, and enjoyed catching up with their former Russian teacher, Ms Beck.

Legacies & Donations

Development remains central to our vision for St Leonards’ exciting future, especially as we look forward to celebrating the School’s 150th Anniversary in 2027. We are currently in the planning stage of a possible capital fundraising campaign. Consideration is being given to investment in a range of possible projects, including: • Sport & Wellbeing • Performing Arts • Bursaries Gifts from Seniors, or indeed legacies left in Wills, can make an enormous impact on the lives of children who attend the School, whether that be through the creation of new facilities, the provision of additional support for co-curricular activities, or the support of bursary funds for children from low income families. St Leonards is recognised as a charity (no. SC010904), and so bequests are free from inheritance and capital gains taxes. From Tartan to Time Capsules: ANNIVERSARIES & STORIES FROM THE ST LEONARDS ARCHIVES

The St Leonards Archives are filled with fascinating facts, historic objects and superb stories – the deeper you delve, the more you discover! Below are a selection of the anniversaries that we have celebrated as a school community this year. Our thanks to Angela Tawse in Queen Mary’s Library for digging for dates and compiling this compelling selection.

1 Time Capsule In 2002, to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the school, pupils created and buried a time capsule in the QML Gardens. Fashioned out of a modified missile container from RAF Leuchars, the capsule will be unearthed in 2052, fifty years after its burial. The capsule included the uniform tartan, merchandise from the quasquicentennial celebrations, a Barbie doll, a model of the new Mini Cooper, a mobile phone, a copy of the first Harry Potter novel and a copy of a newspaper from the time. The anniversary was also marked by a special royal visit from HRH Princess Alexandra, who had previously visited St Leonards to open the new Music School in 1987. She is pictured with the then Head, Wendy Bellars.

2 St Leonards Cloaks Did you know that the iconic St Leonards cloaks were introduced to the school uniform by Dame Frances Dove, the second Headmistress, 130 years ago in the Spring Term of 1892? In the same year, Dove spearheaded the Woodburn Laundry by the East Sands in St Andrews to make and wash the new uniforms. The two images here show them worn in the Spring Term of 1907 - quickly donned to protect against the elements, then just as quickly thrown off for games - and in 1977, on the occasion of the Queen Mother’s visit to St Leonards in the School’s centenary year to open what was at the time the Junior Library in the vaults of QML.

6 New Name St Leonards was originally known as St Andrews School for Girls. Following the purchase of the St Leonards College Grounds in 1881, Council almost unanimously passed the proposal to change the school name to St Leonards School in July 1882, the school that we know and love today!

Now 3 St Leonards Tartan On the subject of uniforms, this year marks 20 years since the introduction of the new uniform at St Leonards centred on the bespoke St Leonards tartan which was designed by Senior Heather Yellowley (née Cowley) (DG 1985-91). The distinctive blue and red design now features on the kilt, the prospectus and in a variety of other areas of school life and style! In the Summer Term, we enjoyed recreating the iconic uniform launch shot with some of our Year 7 pupils. 4 The (Green) Bag Tree At the start of this academic year, we were pleased to welcome a group of Seniors back to St Leonards for a tour of the grounds while they were staying in St Andrews. One spot that jogged some memories was ‘the bag tree’, where they would leave their personalised green satchels at various points in the school day. In the 1950s, there were different trees for each house to minimise confusion and the mixing of bags, and the girls were instructed to carry the bags in their left hands. A ‘bag hut’ was later built to prevent items going missing and to help the grounds to look tidier. Whilst not an anniversary per se, it was wonderful to see how many memories and conversations this sparked amongst our community of Seniors!

5 Angel of Durban Known as the Angel of Durban, Senior Ethel Campbell OBE (APS 19021905) devoted herself to the welfare of Australian and New Zealand soldiers by welcoming every troopship from 191518 with her semaphore flags as they passed through Durban on their way to and from the front line. This year marks 120 years since Ethel started at St Leonards, and the spirit of service that she displayed continues to pervade the St Leonards community to the present day.

Stalwarts of St Leonards

At the end of the Summer Term, staff gathered on Birdcage for drinks, nibbles and speeches to celebrate the end of the academic year and to wish those leaving the St Leonards community all the best for the future. Special mentions to Andrew Lang, Coral Craik, Carol Tyler and Dorothy McCabe (who between them have over 110 years of service to the School). They will be much missed, but their legacies will live on. We wish them all the best in their retirement.
