FROM THE LEADER OF CATECHESIS AND SCHOOL EVANGELISATION Commitment to Proclaim the Good News At our assembly this week, I spoke about our theme “Commitment” and introduced the idea that one of the key commitments we make as a college community is to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. This is reflected in our College prayer when we say words like: truth, love, justice, kindness, respect, harmony, faithfulness and forgiveness. Our commitment to proclaim the message of Jesus is passed on in our classrooms, in our relationships, through our activities like prayer, masses and liturgies, community service, fund raising for project compassion and other local and global causes, our lunch time prayer groups, our youth mass in the parish are some of the the ways that we reflect the teachings of Jesus in words and more importantly in our actions. During each assembly, we will have a Proclaim section which will highlight how the teachers, students and St Joseph’s Regional College community as a whole are living out the message of Jesus Christ. Sacramental Program Congratulations to Senna Barr who was baptised last weekend in St Agnes Parish. She is a wonderful example of someone making a commitment to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. May God bless you. Please contact the College office or have your son /daughter see me if they would like to receive any of the sacraments they may have missed in their primary years. Once we know the number of students involved we will set up a meeting time.

Youth Ministry We are delighted to have Jordan Hodge join our team this year. He will be able to provide opportunities for students to express and explore their faith in the College and the local parish community. Jordan introduced himself at the assembly and part of his introduction is included in the newsletter.

I’ve been a Canberran for most of my life, a place like Sydney feels like a world away let alone Port Macquarie. When I think about it, only 12 months ago I was sitting in a similar position to the current year 12s, worried, confused and excited about the year to come, then again a mere 3 months ago I was graduating the school that I had attended since year 4. Just think about being at one school from year 4 to year 12, obviously that has a significant impact on someone. I’d think if I were to ask some of the seniors who had been here since year 7, they would most likely say the same thing. Throughout my time at St Edmunds I participated in sport such as AFL and Rugby and I also lead many community service projects such as Movember, Caritas and Drug and Alcohol Rehab Services. Not only this, but the fact that I attended the same place every day for 9 years without doubt had a significant impact on me as person and shaped me into the man I am today. However, the most defining factor of my schooling was youth ministry, without this I would be a totally different person and I most likely wouldn’t be here in Port Macquarie in the first place. When I remember back to the time I started to delve into my faith, it was a time in my life where I didn’t have much to cherish, I had this hole in my life where there was not much that meant anything to me. Around that time was when I first attended a youth ministry retreat, I remember hearing an older student sharing about his faith and that’s where it hit me, this was what was missing, this is what I needed in my life. This thing was faith, my faith became a part of my life that I could cherish and develop. My Faith in the form of youth ministry managed to shape me into the person I am today, attending CSYMA classes improved not only my faith, but my public speaking, leadership skills and confidence. This faith of mine had grown into such a significant and beautiful part of my life, I felt as if I had an obligation to share my faith with anyone who would listen. So, taking a step further, I became a part of the senior youth ministry team, which provided me with opportunities to not only strengthen the faith of others in my school and broader community but to explore and deepen my own faith, I felt as if I had found the perfect mission where I could not only teach about faith everyday but learn from those I taught. Jordan Hodge. Lighthouse SJRC erupted into this year with their hearts open to their faith, the first week saw a huge turnout at the St Agnes Youth Mass then even more of a turnout to the first “Encounter” youth group for the year. On Monday a small but enthusiastic group of students attended the first JOLT bible study, this consisted of conversation about the group’s faith experiences over the holidays. We shared some fantastic moments and some struggles, all of which we prayed over before lunch ended. Coming up we have the much-anticipated “Lighthouse Launch” in the hall at lunchtime on Thursday, this will be a fantastic opportunity for everyone to have some fun while developing their faith. I hope to see you there! Jordan Hodge SJRC Youth Ministry Trainee

This year the College has purchased combination locks, which will remain the property of the College and must be returned at the end of the year. Students are not permitted to use their own locks, they must use the College allocated lock. All lock combinations are recorded against a locker number. Locker hire for the year is $20.00, which will be billed to your account once your child has been allocated a locker. This fee includes locker hire & use of the lock for the school year. ST AGNES’ PARISH SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ YEAR BOOK The St Agnes’ Parish Secondary Schools Yearbook is a wonderful record of the year that has passed and great to have as a reference well beyond one’s school years. Families who had a son or daughter in Year 12, 2014 are asked to call into the office to collect their year book please. Students in Years 8 have already received their copy. Year books can be purchased through the College office for just $20.00.

MEDICAL CONDITIONS The College will be updating its records shortly for students with medical conditions. With respect to students who may suffer from serious medical conditions, the College keeps a record in the staffroom of the student and intervention required in the event that immediate action is needed whilst at school. In respect of other medical conditions we also keep a computer record for reference as required. We would ask that parents please notify the College of the following: 1. If your son/daughter has a medical condition that you believe may require intervention at school, please provide written details to the College office. 2. If at any time you believe that your son/daughter may have either measles or chickenpox we would ask that you contact the College as soon as possible. It is very important that the College be notified of these conditions due to the threat to other students with low immune systems. 3. If your son/daughter may suffer from anaphylactic reaction we ask you to provide written details as soon as possible.

NEWS FROM THE LEADER OF ENGLISH LITERACY MATTERS Writing is a fundamental skill which enriches, empowers and ultimately provides opportunity for students as they continue their academic journey here at St Joseph’s Regional College. For this reason, writing is the core literacy area which we will focus on throughout 2015. After what has been a successful implementation of the PEEL strategy for paragraph writing over the past two years, this year we intend to focus on further improving extended writing for all students, across all years. In short, we are working towards excellence in writing. What do excellent writers do? They: 

Establish: Effectively plan responses

Expand: Develop their ideas further, adding depth and detail

Elevate: Use rich and sophisticated vocabulary with control

Edit: Check for errors concerning spelling, punctuation and sentencing in an effort to refine their work

You will notice that your student has been issued with a laminated copy of language terms, which is to be used at home should extended responses be required for homework, assignments and assessments. Please encourage your child to place these terms in a prominent place (above their study desk, for example) and to use these terms when needed or directed. These terms will also be issued at school through Key Learning Areas and will be accessible electronically in the near future. The aim is to elevate the language use of students through this resource. Senior students are encouraged to have their laminated sheets in their folders at school, at all times. Anne Marchment Leader of Literacy

LIBRARY NEWS New Team Member It is with great pleasure that we welcome a new member to the Library team – Mrs Nikki Williams is a Teachers’ Assistant who has previously worked in the Library in a temporary capacity. In 2015, she joins us one day a week and we are delighted to introduce her… she will be the friendly smiling face at the Circulation Desk each Monday. Welcome Nikki. Holiday Reading Even though borrowing from the College library for Years 7-10 was suspended at the end of Term 4 2014, there were alternatives freely available. One of them was our own Overdrive E-Book Library, and the other was the Summer Reading Club promotion sponsored by the Port Macquarie-Hastings Library. Last week, Virginia Cox, Childrens’ Librarian at that Library informed me that two of our students had received commendations for having read so widely during the summer promotion. So congratulations to Hannah King and Hannah Dobson, readers of note.

Textbook Responsibility Parents and Students are reminded that when a resource such as a textbook or library book is issued to a student that person is then responsible for the safe stewardship of that item throughout the loan period and consequently returning to the Library by the specified date Sign-out Procedure If a student departs the College, they must collect a sign-out sheet from the College office. One requirement of every student is that they return all textbooks and Library books to the Library, and it is the student’s responsibility to check classroom cupboards, not the teachers, or Library staff. Many thanks to all those who complete this requirement promptly. Like us on FaceBook – St Joseph’s Regional College Library.
