St. Joseph’s Medical Group St. Joseph’s Medical Group (SJMG) is the employed physician group of St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center located in Phoenix, Arizona. SJMG employs more than 250 providers and 400 support staff that cover a wide variety of specialties. e medical group has had tremendous success over the past few years and now provides services to more than 73 subspecialties. St. Joseph’s Medical Group aims to be the premier provider of primary and specialty care services in the Southwest. e physicians provide clinical services in their areas of specialty and many serve in pivotal research and leadership roles. St. Joseph’s Medical Group is also heavily involved in preparing tomorrow’s healthcare providers. SJMG has 216 residents and 15 fellows throughout the 25 academic residency and fellowship programs. Medical school students also rotate through SJMG. Clinical services are complemented with translational and bench research to augment medical education for residents and students. e mission of St. Joseph’s Medical Group is consistent with Catholic Healthcare West’s mission and St. Joseph’s guiding principles with a focus on innovative clinical care and pursuit of excellence through scholarly activities. Creighton University School of Medicine at St. Joseph’s In 2009, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center and Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha announced an academic affiliation that will create a Creighton medical school presence in Phoenix. e Phoenix campus is formally known as Creighton University School of Medicine at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, a member of Catholic Healthcare West. e Creighton campus in Phoenix becomes the only Catholic medical school campus located west of Omaha. e affiliation will expand educational opportunities available to Creighton medical students while allowing the university’s school of medicine to recruit more students, beginning with the 2010 first year class. e collaboration is also designed to strengthen the medical reputations of both institutions, promote the sharing of faculty and administrative expertise, create collaborative research opportunities, and enhance medical services for Arizona patients. Since 2005, Creighton and St Joseph’s have had an agreement that sends third and fourth year Creighton medical students to Phoenix for one-month rotations. Under the new affiliation, Creighton will establish a fully operational campus at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center that will offer two full years of clinical training. e core clerkships include: internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, ob/gyn, family medicine, psychiatry, neurology and neurosurgery. Creighton will expand its entering medical class from 126 to 152 students, starting in 2010. All students will train for their first two years in Omaha. Starting in 2012, 42 third-year students will move to Phoenix for their final two years of training, and 110 third-year students will remain in Omaha. e Phoenix campus will graduate its first students in 2014. While the Creighton University School of Medicine will become St. Joseph’s primary academic affiliation, St. Joseph’s will continue its affiliations with e University of Arizona College of Medicine and more than 20 other United States medical schools. Creighton will also continue to have numerous clinical rotations for its medical students in and outside Omaha.

Graduate Medical Education St. Joseph’s participates in the entire range of medical education and over the years has evolved into a respected academic medical center. e institutional goal is to provide current and future medical professionals with the education and experience needed to prepare them for a successful career and lifelong vocation of medicine. St. Joseph’s offers 11 resident training programs that draw upon Arizona’s best clinicians and faculty, as well as a collaborative approach to clinical rotations with nationally known educational institutions. For the past several years, the hospital has consistently recruited the best residents available, and it continues to expand its partnerships with a variety of universities throughout the nation through academic and research initiatives.

Creighton University School of Medicine • • • •

e Creighton University School of Medicine has been teaching tomorrow’s doctors since 1892. For fall 2009, Creighton University had more than 5,400 applicants for 126 openings. Starting in 2012, 42 third-year students will move to Phoenix for their final two years of training. e Phoenix campus will graduate its first students in 2014.


Residencies St. Joseph’s is proud to invite the physicians of tomorrow to learn from the finest physicians of today. All residency programs are fully accredited. e hospital offers third-year clerkships and fourth-year electives to help students find their vocational niche in medicine. Programs include: Family Medicine e Family Medicine Residency Training Program at St. Joseph’s was established in 1975. e program has more than 148 graduates who are practicing throughout the United States and the world. Graduates from the program are capable of moving into any practice setting that may include inpatient medicine, obstetrics, comprehensive outpatient continuity care, and also careers in academic medicine. Internal Medicine e Internal Medicine Residency Training Program is committed to a comprehensive inpatient and ambulatory training experience designed to produce compassionate and highly skilled general internists. e academically rigorous program teaches residents state-of-the-art medicine, skills of critical thinking, self-study habits, and techniques of information access that promote lifelong learning. e program has remained fully accredited since its inception in 1962 and graduates nine general internists annually along with 10 preliminary interns who then enter into other specialties, including dermatology, anesthesiology, neurology, radiology and ophthalmology. Residents who train in St. Joseph’s Internal Medicine Program are well prepared for today’s medical marketplace for positions such as hospitalists, academicians, sub-specialists or primary care physicians. Obstetrics and Gynecology e OB/GYN Residency Program is an integrated program between St. Joseph’s and Maricopa Medical Center. e structure of the program allows the resident to gain experience by caring for a variety of populations. e OB/GYN services are provided by the full-time and part-time attending staff, the OB/GYN house officers, Emergency Medicine and Family Medicine residents, Certified Nurse Midwives, fourth-year medical students on elective rotations, and third-year medical students from Creighton University and e University of Arizona on required OB/GYN clerkships. Anatomic and Clinical Pathology e combined Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Residency Program at St. Joseph’s provides excellent training opportunities for residents with a busy inpatient and outpatient surgical service, as well as tertiary referrals, keeping cases diverse and interesting. e four-year curriculum includes training in surgical pathology, cytopathology, autopsy pathology, immunohistochemistry, cytogenetics, flow cytometry, forensic pathology, immunohematology, hematology, chemistry and microbiology. Diagnostic Radiology St. Joseph’s Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program takes advantage of the highly trained faculty and the wide variety of sophisticated imaging technology on campus. e majority of the resident’s training is spent in the core areas of diagnostic radiology, neuroradiology, musculoskeletal radiology, vascular and interventional radiology, cardiothoracic radiology, breast radiology, abdominal radiology, pediatric radiology, ultra sonography and nuclear medicine/PET. e program has an unparallel accreditation and board certification track record with the highest board examination scores for the past five years among the 214 United States radiology residencies. Neurology As an integral part of Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s, the Division of Neurology has been acknowledged for its highly skilled neuroscience care. It offers comprehensive diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and education for patients suffering from diseases and injuries of the nervous system. Adults and children receive both inpatient and outpatient care from world renowned specialists and have the opportunity to participate in pharmaceutical clinical trials. Research studies are perfected by scientists utilizing the latest diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. Experts at Barrow provide teaching for medical residencies and sponsor ongoing educational programs for physicians, healthcare professionals, patients and their families. 7


Neurosurgery St. Joseph’s Neurological Surgery Residency Program is the largest in the United States with a rigorous training curriculum and is among the most competitive in the nation. Seven years are dedicated to the Neurosurgery Residency Training, including rotations in neuropathology, laboratory research (12 months), or electives in addition to the core neurosurgical training. An additional post-graduate year is devoted to further laboratory research or other electives. Residents develop their clinical skills by caring for patients in need of the complete spectrum of neurological surgery: trauma, cerebrovascular, spine, neoplastic, functional, and pediatric. e clinical experience available to residents is reflected by the volume and diversity of patients at Barrow as well as the academic placement of our graduates. Pediatrics e Children’s Health Center at St. Joseph’s is the focus for one of the most comprehensive pediatric residency programs in the southwest. e curriculum emphasizes general pediatrics with innovative rotations in the psychosocial aspects of primary care pediatrics. Pediatric residents become part of community dedicated to the mission of providing the highest quality healthcare available to all children in need. e Pediatric Residency Program is supported by a division of general pediatrics and ambulatory care, a division of the Child Abuse Assessment Center, and a division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics. Child Neurology e Child Neurology Residency Program includes one of the largest faculties in the nation, with eight child neurologists on staff. is residency program begins after two to three years of pediatric training and has focused areas of excellence in epilepsy, neuro-genetics and pediatric neurosurgery. General Surgery One of Arizona’s newest residency programs, St. Joseph’s General Surgery Residency Program provides a comprehensive surgical experience for future surgeons. e General Surgery Residency Program is composed of an enthusiastic and experienced teaching faculty, a successful general surgery/trauma program and a basic science research program. St. Joseph’s is verified as a Level I Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons.

Barrow Neurology Clinics e neurologists in the Barrow Neurology Clinics offer comprehensive diagnosis, treatment and education for patients with diseases and injuries of the nervous system, such as epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis and stroke. Patients receive world-class inpatient and outpatient care, second opinions and the opportunity to participate in clinical trials of promising new medications. Our neurologists work collaboratively with patients and their physicians to develop the best plan of care for each individual. e Barrow Neurology Clinics offer services in the following subspecialties: Cognitive Disorders is specialty uses a multidisciplinary approach to assess and treat patients with disorders related to memory loss, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and other cognitive problems. Patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus and traumatic brain injury can also receive care from the Cognitive Disorders Program. Epilepsy e Epilepsy Program is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of individuals with epilepsy and other seizure disorders. Effective treatment begins with an accurate diagnosis. is Level 4 Epilepsy Program offers a wide range of diagnostic tests – including brain monitoring in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit – and specialized neurodiagnostic and neuropsychological testing. Treatment options range from medical management to participation in clinical trials to surgery. Our specialists also provide counseling and referrals to community resources. 8


Movement Disorders e Movement Disorders Program focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of tremors, Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, tics and other movement-related disorders. e medical team also works with patients who may be candidates for deep-brain stimulation or medical Botox as a treatment option. Our neurologists are involved in clinical trials and basic-science research designed to improve our knowledge of and treatments for movement disorders. e Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center at St. Joseph’s serves as a resource for our region, offering extensive community outreach and education programs, an interdisciplinary assessment clinic, and support groups. Neuro-immunology, Multiple Sclerosis Neuro-immunology experts at the Barrow Neurology Clinics offer medical care, support services and referral to community resources to individuals with multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, Guillain-Barré, lupus and other inflammatory and demyelinating disorders. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a special focus of the program. Our neurologists work to alleviate patient symptoms and educate patients about the course of their illness. Research into new ways to treat and possibly cure MS is also an area of emphasis. Neuromuscular Disease Barrow is home to the Valley’s only Muscular Dystrophy Association Clinic, a multidisciplinary program that serves patients with muscular dystrophy, ALS and other related diseases. e department also performs EMG and nerve conduction studies. Neuro-Oncology Patients with brain and spine tumors receive care from a wide range of specialists in this division of the Barrow Neurology Clinics. Neuro-oncologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropathologists, neuroradiologists and radiation oncologists work together to provide each patient with an individualized treatment plan. Care is available in an outpatient clinic and inpatient unit specially designed and staffed for neurological patients. e neuro-oncology program also conducts both clinical trials and bench research for tumors of the brain and spine. Neurovascular/Stroke Barrow’s Stroke Center cares for more stroke victims than any other center in the Southwest. In recognition of the center’s quality, the Joint Commission on Accreditation certified St. Joseph’s a Primary Stroke Center—the first hospital in Arizona to receive this certification. Patients with signs of a stroke are evaluated and treated to prevent a life-altering stroke. Follow-up care and education help stroke patients achieve the best recovery and quality of life possible. e center also conducts more clinical stroke treatment and prevention research trials than any other hospital in the region. B.R.A.I.N.S. Clinic e Barrow Resource for Acquired Injury to the Nervous System (B.R.A.I.N.S.) program combines numerous medical disciplines to help patients of all ages meet their short-term and

Patients receive a care and rehabilitation program that is designed specifically for each individual and may include neurosurgery, trauma care, diagnostics, neurology, neuropsychology, neurorehabilitation and translational research. Inpatients and outpatients in the program have access to top neurological scientists and translational research Barrow is conducting on brain injuries. It is also the first program in the United States to include educators in a multidisciplinary model and to offer prevention classes for children.

Center for Transitional NeuroRehabilitation Barrow’s Center for Transitional NeuroRehabilitation (CTN) offers holistic neurorehabilitation for older adolescents and adult patients with acquired brain injuries. e program’s emphasis is on improving patients’ independent functioning in the home and community and assisting them in returning to productive work or school. CTN is unique in that it treats patients with a wide variety of neurological diagnoses, as well as a range of when the injury occurred – from as soon as a few weeks following an injury to several years later. A team of three neuropyschologists, a neuropsychology resident, support staff and interdisciplinary therapists (physical, occupational, recreational, speech and language) works in tandem to achieve the department’s overall emphasis on psychoeducation and adjustment. CTN also emphasizes family involvement and treatment, including emotional support, as an important component of their philosophy.

Clinical Neuropsychology e Department of Clinical Neuropsychology at Barrow, specializes in diagnostic assessment and interventions for patients with known or suspected brain disorders and associated neurocognitive deficits. e department is also actively involved in clinical research. At St. Joseph’s, clinical neuropsychologists provide services on the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, the Inpatient Neuro-rehabilitation Unit, the Outpatient Consultation Service, the Inpatient Consultation Service, as well as a variety of specialty clinics (the Movement Disorders Clinic, the Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus Clinic, and the Hypothalamic Hamartoma Clinic).

Family Medicine St. Joseph’s Family Medicine Center has been providing a patient-centered medical home to community members for more than 35 years. e center offers a wide range of services – including well-child and well-woman care, preventive care, sports medicine, skin care, minor medical procedures, and behavioral health and counseling – to a diverse patient population. e Family Medicine Center has full access to all facilities and resources on the hospital campus. Some of the program’s unique offerings include diabetic group visits, a coumadin clinic and a geriatric assessment clinic. When patients need a specialist to participate in their healthcare, the family physician acts as an advocate to ensure patients receive the care needed.

General Surgery/Trauma Surgery General surgeons are board-certified physicians that provide highly specialized trauma hospital care, acute care for critically ill patients and non-acute care for patients who need elective surgery. St. Joseph’s general surgeons have access to 11 operating rooms, a three-room lithotripsy suite, and units dedicated to pre- and post-operative care.

Heart & Lung Institute Founded in 2005, St. Joseph’s Heart & Lung Institute (HLI) is dedicated to state-of-the-art care, research and education in adult cardiovascular, thoracic and esophageal disease. e HLI has recruited full-time cardiothoracic specialists from top academic centers across the nation. e Cardiovascular Center e Cardiovascular Center provides state-of-the-art, evidence-based care encompassing the full spectrum of adult cardiovascular disease. In adult cardiac surgery, physicians bring specialized expertise and clinical and research interest in heart valve disease, atrial fibrillation, arterial conduits for coronary bypass and pulmonary embolism. e program has been designated as a Center of Excellence in mitral valve repair, with repair rates well over 90 percent. e Heart Valve Clinic provides longitudinal care for patients with heart valve disease. e center recently acquired the first dedicated intraoperative 3-D echocardiography machine, which greatly enhances the precision of valve surgery procedures. e Atrial Fibrillation Clinic offers patients access to the full range of modern treatment options including medical therapy, catheter ablation, the mini-Maze and full Maze procedures. Additionally, the vascular surgery program offers the full range of open and endovascular treatments for patients with vascular disease, carotid endarterectomy, aneurysm repair, and peripheral arterial bypass. e Center for oracic and Esophageal Disease e HLI’s Center for oracic and Esophageal Disease Center specializes in a multidisciplinary approach to evaluating, diagnosing and treating individuals with known or suspected diseases of the lung, chest or esophagus. e program’s structure provides access to resources in a single visit, at a single location. ese services often represent the largest and most advanced programs of their kind in the Southwest. Programs include: Advanced Lung Disease Center, Cystic Fibrosis Program for adults and adolescents, Genetic Lung Disease Program, Lung Nodule Clinic, oracic Oncology, Interventional Pulmonology, and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. e Esophageal Disease Center is the only dedicated center in Arizona that offers comprehensive and multidisciplinary evaluation for esophageal disease in adults and children. It is one of the fastest growing centers accounting for at least 55 percent of our surgical activities. St. Joseph’s Esophageal Function Laboratory conducts most of the esophageal testing for the Valley and is among the busiest labs in the West. Our newly established combined manoflourography unit is the first in the state and one of the first in the nation. e Center for oracic Transplantation e Center for oracic Transplantation brings to the greater Phoenix community a needed Lung Transplantation and Lung Volume Reduction Program. Previously, most patients requiring lung transplantation have to leave the state to be evaluated and have the lung transplant procedure performed. With one of the best pulmonary rehabilitation programs in the nation and recently recruited transplant pulmonologists and surgeons, the program is poised to be one of the dominant transplant centers in the U.S.

Heart & Lung Institute •

e Lung Transplant Program completed its 50th lung transplant in Fiscal Year 2010.

e Jordan Sterling Foundation Fellowship Program, in honor of Rajat Walia, MD, is currently underway.


Internal Medicine e Internal Medicine Health Center is a full- service, multispecialty clinic for men and women 18 years and older. Patients are seen by our board certified faculty physicians and nurse practitioners during their scheduled private clinics. e services offered include general internal medicine, endocrinology, infectious disease, rheumatology, anticoagulation therapy, and pain and palliative care. General A general internist is a physician who specializes solely in the evaluation and non- surgical treatment of medical illnesses, preventive medical care, and evaluation of healthy adults. e physicians provide evidenced-based comprehensive personal medical care of the adult patient excluding obstetrics. Your primary care physician is working on the front line of the healthcare system and will take the initial steps to provide patient centered care for any health problems a patient has. If a problem lies outside your physician’s area of expertise, appropriate referrals will be made to another physician in or outside of the group. In addition, St Joseph’s has a robust Internal Medicine Residency clinic operated within the Internal Medicine Health Center. e clinic offers outpatient primary medical care for patients with limited income. e Internal Medicine Resident primary care physician is responsible for the oversight and coordination of the healthcare for the patient. Members of Internal Medicine’s teaching faculty assume the role and responsibilities as primary attending for clinic patients. Gastroenterology e Adult Gastrointestinal Department at St. Joseph’s offers a full range of services to diagnose, treat and manage all digestive problems including esophageal, gastric, small intestine, colonic, rectal, liver, biliary tract and pancreatic disorders in both an inpatient and outpatient setting. St Joseph’s Adult Gastroenterology Department is a Center for Endoscopic Excellence. Endocrinology St. Joseph’s Endocrinologists treat patients with hormonal problems related to the thyroid, pituitary, parathyroid, adrenal, pancreas, ovaries and testes, and bones, such as diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, pituitary tumors, adrenal insufficiency, and glandular tumors. Some of the services offered by our endocrinologists include: inpatient and outpatient consultation, thyroid ultrasound, thyroid biopsy, continuous glucose monitoring, diabetes education, insulin pump therapy, gland stimulation tests, osteoporosis screening and treatment. Infectious Disease St. Joseph’s Infectious Disease physicians are dedicated to serving people with suspected or known infectious and communicable diseases of all types and in all organs in the inpatient and outpatient setting. e infection can be caused by viruses,

Rheumatology St. Joseph’s Rheumatology physician provides diagnostic and treatment services for multiple rheumatic and immune-system diseases, including arthritis, bursitis, carpal tunnel, rheumatoid arthritis, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, myositis, Paget's Disease, connective tissue disease, Polymyositis, Scleroderma, Raynaud's disease, Septic arthritis, and vasculitis syndrome in the inpatient and outpatient setting. Anti-coagulation Clinic Millions of patients are treated with an anticoagulant or blood thinner such as Coumadin, to reduce clotting of the blood, and thus reduce the risk of conditions caused by abnormal clot formation. is treatment requires tightly regulated dosing, administration, and follow-up. e Anticoagulation Clinic provides periodic evaluation and monitoring of patients on blood thinners. Immediate test results and adjustments to a patient’s anticoagulation therapy are made during the patient’s visit to the clinic. Hours of waiting for this important test result are eliminated decreasing patient anxiety. Hospitalists St. Joseph’s Internal Medicine Academic Hospitalists provide a faculty team of Internal Medicine doctors who specialize in the care of hospitalized adult patients. e physicians provide the knowledge and expertise required to bring the best care for patients. Orthopedics e Orthopedic Department is dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of injuries and diseases that affect bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves. Established in 2005, the Orthopedic Department provides 24-hour coverage for all orthopedic problems, including inpatient consultations, Emergency Department coverage, and around-the-clock orthopedic trauma coverage for the busiest Level 1 Trauma Center in the Valley. e outpatient clinic is dedicated to the management of elective, urgent, and emergent orthopedic conditions.

Psychiatry St. Joseph’s Psychiatry Department provides timely and comprehensive adult and pediatric psychiatric care and consultation to the hospital’s inpatient population, including mentally ill patients with acute medical needs and other patients who develop or exhibit psychiatric symptoms. Common issues that may require psychiatric consultation include pre-existing psychiatric illnesses that are exacerbated by the stresses of hospitalization and psychiatric symptoms that occur due to a physical condition or medication side-effect. 15

Scott and Laura Eller Congenital Heart Center e Scott and Laura Eller Congenital Heart Center is an academic faculty-based model for multidisciplinary care that is provided in an integrated and coordinated system from before birth and through adulthood. Maternal-fetal care begins with prenatal diagnosis by an integrated team of devoted perinatologists and pediatric cardiologists and continues through the entire pregnancy. After birth, the team provides tailored medical and surgical therapy for the individual child. e center also provides a comprehensive care plan for adults with congenital heart disease that includes medical follow-up, interventions and surgery. Pediatric Cardiology e pediatric cardiology team has expertise in the care of infants and children with congenital heart disease. e team offers evaluation, diagnosis and management of at-risk pregnancies for fetal heart defects and rhythm disturbances through the Fetal Cardiology Program. e center also provides a continuum of care for children, adolescents and adults with congenital heart disease. Pediatric Heart Transplant Program St. Joseph’s is proud to provide the Valley’s only pediatric heart transplant program. Pediatric heart transplants are among the most complicated procedures and patients require a lifetime of care. A heart transplant is recommended for children who have serious heart dysfunction and cannot be managed with medications or other surgeries. is can affect children from only a few days old into adulthood, and the program can support the needs of all patients. St. Joseph’s transplant program is unique to Arizona because it is focused on pediatric heart failure and transplantation. In Nov. 2009, St. Joseph’s received approval from the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), the non-profit organization that coordinates transplant activity in the United States. St. Joseph’s expects to perform approximately five heart transplants per year, making it a medium-sized program when compared to the United State’s other major pediatric heart transplant centers.

Barrow Children's Cleft and Craniofacial Center e Barrow Children’s Cleft and Craniofacial Center offers an interdisciplinary team that provides comprehensive evaluation, diagnostic testing and treatment for adult and pediatric patients with craniofacial disorders. e medical team includes craniofacial plastic surgeons, geneticists, orthodontists, otolaryngologists, oral maxillofacial surgeons, oculoplastic surgeons, and speech pathologists. Adolescent Medicine e Adolescent Medicine Specialty Practice, which delivers care exclusively to patients ages 10 to 24, was formed to serve a growing population of adolescents who have unrecognized needs and complex medical issues. A staff consisting of a physician, psychologist, nurse and pediatric residents provides physical and psychological assessments for adolescents and offers treatment, education and referrals for chronic disease, eating disorders, psychological disorders, and more. e practice also provides care to the residents at Florence Crittenton, a residential treatment center for adolescents. Child Abuse Assessment Center e Child Abuse Assessment Center is a partner in the Childhelp Children’s Center of Arizona, a team of law enforcement, prosecution, social service agencies, medical professionals and mental health clinicians. St. Joseph’s program is staffed by three highly-trained pediatricians, two nurse practitioners, three medical assistants and a forensic interviewer. ere is also a fellowship program. On call 24-hours a day, seven days a week, the team’s primary role is to provide medical exams and forensic interviews on a moment’s notice for victims of child maltreatment, including physical and sexual abuse, neglect, and drug exposure. Our goals are to minimize the trauma of the case investigation and management process to clients, as well as the likelihood of revictimization to the child and his/her siblings. 17


Children’s Rehabilitative Services e Children's Rehabilitative Services (CRS) mission is to provide medical treatment, rehabilitation and related support services to medically qualified individuals - primarily children - who have certain medical, disabling or potentially disabling conditions and have the potential for functional improvement. St. Joseph’s partners with the Arizona Physician IPA (APIPA) to fulfill this mission. e one-stop clinic services also include lab, pharmacy, and radiology services; psychology; physical, occupational, and speech therapy; audiology services; nutrition services; nursing; and social work support. e team members can meet with patients and families individually or participate in multidisciplinary planning clinics with the physician specialists. Developmental Pediatrics Developmental Pediatrics, also known as e Arizona Child Study Center (AzCSC), is a multidisciplinary program that provides services for children with learning and/or behavioral problems. e AzCSC offers evaluations and treatment services for infants and children identified as at-risk for conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and related disorders; learning, behavior and emotional disorders; autism and related disorders; and specific developmental disorders. Additionally, they diagnose disorders such as autism and provide support and education to assist parents in understanding and coping with the disorder. e center’s board-certified developmental and behavioral pediatrician is among the only hospital-based developmental pediatricians in the state. Pediatric Gastroenterology e Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition serves infants, children and adolescents with gastrointestinal and nutritional disorders. ese disorders include abdominal pain, inflammatory bowel disease, chronic liver disorders, failure to thrive and feeding disorders. Pediatric Neurosurgery e Pediatric Neurosurgery Program provides services for infants and children. ey offer a full range of neurosurgical services for the treatment of: birth defects of the central nervous system, brain tumors, cerebral palsy, cerebrovascular surgery, chiari malformation, closed head injuries, craniofacial disorders, epilepsy, hydrocephalus, neurological infections, spina bifida, spinal disorders and other brain or spinal injuries. St. Joseph’s Barrow Neurological Institute provides comprehensive evaluation, diagnostic testing, and treatment for patients with hypothalamic hamartoma (HH) tumors. HH tumors are rare benign tumors of the hypothalamus, a region of the brain that regulates many critical functions. St. Joseph’s offers a surgical technique that removes the hypothalamic hamartomas and gives new hope for families with children who suffer from these tumors. Pediatric Pulmonology e Pediatric Pulmonology Program cares for children with a variety of pulmonary-related diseases. e goal of this program is to keep the child out of the hospital by controlling their disease. e program provides evaluation and care for patients with severe pulmonary disorders that include but are not limited to airway anomalies, with or without associated congenital heart or lung defects; bronchopulmonary dysplasia; cystic fibrosis; immune deficiencies; primary cilliary dyskinesia; respiratory problems resulting from neuromuscular disorders; and sleep-related breathing disorders.
