Brain Food for Sixth Graders Sixth grade students recently took part in a special science program with biology teacher Dr. Dianne Carey. During sessions that took place over the course of four days, Dr. Carey spoke to her eager audience about the nervous system and the human brain. Students learned how sensory receptors (nose, mouth, skin, eyes, ears) work and how they connect with corresponding lobes of the brain where that information is processed. Students investigated models of brains and discussed the importance of a healthy diet, exercise, and sleep/rest in promoting proper brain function. They even enjoyed tasting a special treat – a very realistic looking brain made of Jell-O! Right: Griffin Herring (left) and Matt Vigneaux chow down on a little brain food with Dr. Dianne Carey.

Football in Fenway! There hasn’t been a high school football game in Fenway Park in 88 years. But St. John’s Prep was among a lucky few rosters selected to play in this iconic Boston stadium! On Thanksgiving eve, a huge Prep contingency made their way to the Green Monster to watch the Eagles tackle rivals Xaverian.

It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, especially for the kids. With the history and tradition that surrounds Fenway Park, to be able to play a game there was special, a very Go Eagles! The coach and captains attended a pre-game press conference at Fenway Park: Jay Carnevale ’16, Oliver Ebert ’16, Coach Brian St. Pierre ’98, Sean Fallon ’16 and Jack Lambert.

Agents of Positive Change Students representing St. John’s at District Attorney Jonathan W. Blodgett’s 3rd Annual Youth Summit in September were challenged to be agents of positive change in their schools. Motivational speaker Al Duncan and former Boston Celtic Chris Herren spoke about healthy decision making. Herron urged the students not to choose the path of alcohol and drugs as he did, but instead to set an example for their classmates. “Make Good Decisions” was inscribed on sunglasses that each attendee received to remind them to have a different view on the world. “You are the leaders in your schools,” Herren told them. “Sometimes that position doesn’t feel cool. I promise, kids look up to you. They might not say it, but they do. There is no stronger message than the power of example.” These student leaders will implement a project with underclassmen in the spring on good decision making.

School guidance counselors, Nancy Sacco and Deborah Tierney, accompanied eight sophomores to the Teen Summit: Jack Trapani, Ben Ruemenapp, Greg Miglis, Connor Duggan, Boston Perry, Thomas Martin, Sebastian Arango, and Harrison Ficus.
