n order to keep with some of our traditions at St. John’s, at least in some capacity, I will be hosting our annual “Hymns in Hauser” online. It will be Friday, December 11, at 6 p.m., in place of the weekly Hymn Sing. As per tradition, I will put together a list of hymns, talk about the history or other interesting facts, and you will be able to sing along in the comfort of your home. That being said, if there’s a Christmas Carol or Advent Hymn you would like included that I haven’t used before, let me know! I do have a nice collection of hymnals from several denominations, so we are not limited to the one we use at St. John’s.

Poinsettia Memorials Remember your loved ones and donate a poinsettia. The memorial poinsettias will adorn St. John’s during Christmas. Poinsettia memorial forms are due Sunday, December 20. Forms are inserted with this newsletter. Forms are also available across from the elevator and outside the chapel.

Rector’s Letter

Holiday Traditions

S

carcely a year ago, I was asked to write an article on holiday traditions for the faith section of City View Magazine. In the article, I spoke of the importance of inperson holiday traditions that bring family and friends together and the reality that the timing and shape of these traditions has necessarily changed over time. This year, we face the necessity of refraining from many of our holiday traditions in order to safely observe the holidays, or holy days, during COVID-19. I plan to travel to Alabama during Thanksgiving Week to see my mother, but we will not partake in the extended family gatherings that have become central to our holiday tradition. While we have returned to in-person worship in St. John’s, we chose not to include the deanery in the Veterans Day Service, and we will refrain from gathering for the Community Thanksgiving Service this year. I will miss gathering with the clergy and people of our deanery and our downtown churches. I fervently hope to return to the full observance of these traditions in 2021. Your vestry and worship leadership have determined that we are unable to safely hold the Nativity Pageant or to install the Rood Screen this year. Due to restrictions on worship, we will not have choral or congregational singing. We will miss these traditions that have become central to our observance of Christmas at St. John’s. In this edition of the Epistle, your vestry has worked hard to communicate the plans we have made through January 2021. Your vestry will meet

in early January to plan the way we will observe Lent and Easter. In lieu of the annual Christmas Hymn Sing in Hauser Hall, Ryan Pagels will host a Christmas Hymn Sing on Friday, December 11. In lieu of Operation Christmas Child, The Rev. Robert Alves parishioners will be encouraged to support the Episcopal Farmworkers 6, for a service. January 6 is the Feast of the Epiphany, also known as Old Ministry’s Christmas Toy Drive. Christmas. It is the day that we I will continue to deliver poinsettias remember the wise men offering to parishioners who are homebound gifts to the Christ child. Robert M. Alves service. The 10 p.m. service will be an adapted version of our traditional service. Deborah Greene will provide kits for those who wish to make Advent wreaths at home as we will not be able to safely gather in Hauser Hall this year.

fter seven months without in-person services, St. John’s held its first indoor in-person service at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14, followed by indoor in-person Sunday services at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on October 25. The services allowed parishioners to greet one another and experience live services while maintaining social distancing. Services will continue at these regular times through most of November in the sanctuary. There will be no Wednesday service on November 25, the day before Thanksgiving.

In accordance with COVID-19 guidelines, there will be no congregational singing this year; however, look for a special on-line Christmas hymn sing with Ryan Pagels on Friday, December 11th, at 6:00 p.m.

Christmas Eve services will be different this year. There will be a service at 4:00 p.m., led by the congregation’s youth. There will be a service at 10:00 p.m. featuring instrumental music. Both services will provide a worship experience that differs from our traditional services but that incorLooking forward to Advent and Christmas, in-per- porates social distancing and makes the services son Sunday services will continue at the regular safer during the pandemic. 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. times. Epiphany Celebration 2021 By The Rev. Robert M. Alves, Rector

O

n Wednesday, January 6, 2021, we will gather to celebrate the first feast day of 2021. Epiphany, also known as Old Christmas, marks the end of the twelve days of Christmas. On this first feast day of 2021, our focus will be drawn to the story of the visit of the three wise men to the baby Jesus in Bethlehem. 2020 has taught us to be adaptable. We anticipate that we will still be living under COVID-19 restrictions in early January. Thus, we will refrain from our traditional Epiphany King’s Cake Celebration on a Sunday near the Epiphany. We will gather to celebrate the Epiphany on the evening of Wednesday, January 6. The regular Wednesday night service will begin at 5:15 in the church. At 6 p.m., following the service, families with children are invited to gather in Hauser Hall. Fr. Alves will offer brief reflections on the Epiphany, when the wise men brought gifts to the baby Jesus. Gifts will be given to children who were unable to attend the 4 p.m. Christmas Eve service. And, families will be

invited to share stories of the way Christmas traditions have been observed during these extraordinary and challenging times. While families wishing to attend both the service and the family gathering in Hauser Hall are encouraged to do so, the family gathering is designed to be a separate gathering.

Thanksgiving Sunday SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 22 Join us as we commit to return a portion of our time and treasure to God for what he has given us.

AdVent Wreaths November 29th is the first Sunday in Advent. As I write this article, we plan not to gather to make these beautiful wreaths. However, the infrastructure you will need, such as the wreath frame, candles, and candle holders, along with “how to” instruction and an advent booklet with devotions, will be made available for you to pick up . . . Where? At St. John’s Episcopal Church in Hauser Hall When? Sundays, November 22 and 29, 2020, Time? 9:00 a.m.-10:15 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 a.m. Share a picture of your finished wreath and family together. Send it to me via text or e-mail. I will see that they are displayed on the children’s bulletin board in the hallway on your way to worship for all to see that Covid-19 CANNOT and WILL NOT steal Christmas from us! Outreach Commitment to Outreach Endures By Ken Lancaster, Outreach

O

utreach is one of the primary ways for St. John’s to remain a viable member of the church community, but also, the community at large. I have been blessed to have been the Vestry Liaison for the last three years. The support I have received from volunteers has made my tenure extremely gratifying. I entered this role very anxious as I was following in the steps of some excellent past leaders, especially Sybil Sasaki, who preceded me, and held my hand from start to finish constantly encouraging me. While 2020 activities were limited by the virus, the church still managed to remain relevant and involved in our community. As Rector Alves wrote in the Fall Epistle, the church’s commitment

to Outreach endures. During 2020, the Church has made significant financial contributions to organizations such as Connections of Cumberland County and Trinity Center and numerous other non-profit organizations. Going forward we will continue to support Connections, Operation In As Much, Episcopal Farm Workers Ministry, Luke 14 Banquet, Operation Christmas Child and others as the Covid Rules will allow. I close by thanking all the wonderful volunteers who always answered the bell when I needed your help. I look forward to working with the next Outreach liaison and prayerfully, in 2021, we can get back on track. Have a wonderful, safe Holiday.

Toy Drive for Episcopal Farmworkers Ministry Dear St. John’s Family, This has been a different year for us all and it is wonderful that we are finally returning to in-person services. I was appointed as our liaison to the Episcopal Farmworkers Ministry (EFWM) in January. This is a vital ministry serving a very hard working, underprivileged population. Covid hit this population hard and they are in need. Due to Covid, we as a congregation are not participating in the Christmas Child Shoeboxes,so I asked Father Alves if we could help with the EFWM Toy/Present Drive. The answer was YES! Please find it in your hearts to purchase a toy or present (at least $20 value) for a child 0 -17 yrs. of age and bring it unwrapped to the church. A collection table will be placed in Hauser Hall. The deadline to drop off your gift is December 1. Attached is the information from the EFWM. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

“TOY / Present DRIVE FOR THE EPISCOPAL FARMWORKERS MINISTRY (EFWM). EFWM staff has registered 400 children (ages 0-17) for this year’s Christmas Event, which will take place on December 12. Usually, they have an in-person celebration for the children, but this year it will be a drive-through style. We are collecting new presents (with a value of at least $20) for the children. Please help make this event a success.”

EYC/Jr EYC: Episcopal Youth in the Church Most Unusual Year By Lizzie Shepherd, Vestry Liaison for the Youth

T

he youth of St. John’s have experienced a most unusual year, from suspended sports and school schedules to reduced interactions with friends and family. This ‘pause’ has trickled into all aspects of our youth’s lives, to include activities and offerings at St. John’s. Our youth need your prayers and encouragement now more than ever. Though programming is still suspended, youth are acolyting and reading during services. The Family Service on Christmas Eve will be predominately youth-led... which is quite fitting for celebrating the birth of the Christ child. If your child is interested in participating and having a role in the Family Service, please contact me; there’s room for everyone!

Please be in prayer for the young people of our parishthat this time of pause will have a positive impact on them and help them grow; that they may focus on the skills and relationships that have blossomed instead of those that haven’t. It is our sincerest hope that as the virus gets under control, our comfort levels rise and the health risks diminish, that St. John’s youth can gather regularly and meaningfully again. If you have ideas on how we can have fellowship in the meantime, please reach out. Lizzie can be reached at 910-527-6205 or lizziebenshepherd@gmail.com.

Inreach / Welcoming

In-Reach Vestry Update By Zachary Parisian, Inreach / Welcoming

J

ewel Prichard and I have spoken several times regarding plans as we gradually return to corporate worship. I am especially grateful for our volunteers who have answered the call to act as greeters to our inperson worship services. Our greeters serve a crucial role in ensuring the continued safety of our fellow parishioners, and ensuring that safety guidelines are being followed as worshipers are met at the door. Though most of our committee activities have been put on hold, we are still deeply appreciative of the

commitment from all of our committee members and will continue to remain in touch. I intend within the next couple of months to reach out to our committee members to inquire as to any needs or concerns that any member or committee may have, as we begin developing and implementing plans for when we can once again gather together as a congregation. May God bless and continue to keep you all safe and healthy.
