February / March 2020

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday Services on Wednesday, February 26, at noon and 7 p.m.

LENT For a complete schedule of activities during Lent and Easter, please see page 2.

“Jesus Turns His Face Toward Jerusalem” led by The Rev. Dr. Kathryn C. Mathewson – A Lenten Study

he Rev. Dr. Kathryn Mathewson will be leading the T ECW’s 2020 Lenten Study Series. Lenten Study will meet the five Mondays in March beginning on March 2 and ending on March 30. The group will meet in Hauser Hall at 10:30 a.m.. The study is followed by Holy Communion and then lunch. Members of ECW will be making sandwiches and soup for the Series.

Our Lenten Program will involve a series of meditations adapted from a Good Friday three-hour service presented by The Rev. Dr. Mathewson at the Church of the Holy Trinity on Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia in 2012. These meditations will take us on the journey with Jesus through his passion and crucifixion in the great city of Jerusalem. We will follow in the steps of Jesus, accompanied by the images and experiences which The Rev. Dr. Mathewson encountered while studying in Jerusalem in 2011 at St. George’s College. It will be a quiet time to ponder and imagine, to acquaint ourselves with the locations and era of Jesus’ journey. It will be a thought-provoking time to begin to understand the underlying echoes of joys and sorrows that have pervaded the history of this controversial city. Join us as we share in this time of preparation for Easter renewal.

Rector’s Letter

A Season of Renewal

F

irst, let me say thank you to the members of St. John’s for honoring me by acknowledging the 30th anniversary of my ordination as a priest. When I was ordained at St. John’s on Saturday, January 13, 1990, I could not have imagined that I would return as rector and spend over half of my ordained ministry in this place. It is a privilege and pleasure to serve as your rector. Thanks also for the gift of a new Book of Common Prayer and Hymnal that I will use as I lead worship during my fourth decade as a priest.

Alabama. My great-great-greatgreat grandparents, James Alves and Maria Davis, were married in Fayetteville in 1815 before moving west to Henderson, KY. James and Maria were founding members of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Henderson. My grandparents moved from Henderson, KY to Guntersville in the early 1900’s and were founding members of Church of the Epiphany Episcopal Church. While I am tracing family roots, I will also look for early connections between St. John’s and St. Paul’s as they were started by members of the same extended family in the early 1800’s. My travels will also take me to Sewanee, TN, New York City and Alexandria, Virginia, to visit libraries and seminaries as I continue my research on the roots of A Prayer Book for the Armed Services. My hope is to discover stories that document how the devotional resources were used, examine copies of a variety of manuals and revise and enlarge the presentation that I gave the Episcopal military chaplains last September.

For the past year, the vestry and I have been preparing for me to take a time for renewal. Provisions were made for a three-month sabbatical, when I began as your rector almost ten years ago. On February 10, I will begin a journey that will trace the history of my family from Fayetteville through Kentucky to

I look forward to spending over a month at Virginia Seminary as a dean’s scholar, during which time I will continue my research and make a presentation to the Seminary community. I deeply appreciate the opportunity to take time for renewal and the work of all those who helped prepare for my time away. I pray that the season of

Lent and Easter will be a time of renewal for the parish as well. I look forward to returning to St. John’s in May with renewed energy, as we continue the ministry of Christ together.

Faithfully, The Rev. Robert M. Alves THE EPISTLE

Clergy Coverage During Sabbatical By Richard Alligood

F

or well over a year, Father Robert’s plan for his sabbatical has been a work in progress. Much work went into the application for the National Clergy Renewal Program through the Lilly Endowment, which is located in Indiana. Unfortunately, competition was strong and as we heard in August, we were not selected. This meant that Father Robert had to make some alternate plans for his sabbatical and those came together nicely. One area that was my responsibility was to obtain clergy coverage for the time period Father Robert will be gone. In doing so, I hoped to have clergy lead our services that were within a fairly close “catchment” area to keep expenses such as overnight accommodations and mileage to a minimum. As such, services will be led by the Rev. William Privette, Rev. Dr. Randy Foster, Rev. Ralph Clark and Rev. Ray Brown. The Rev. Dr. Mark Jefferson, from Virginia Theological Seminary, will be with us one Sunday in March. April: 5 Palm Sunday Rev. Dr. Randy Foster 9 Maundy Thursday Rev. Ray Brown 10 Good Friday Rev. ll members and friends of St. John’s are invited and encouraged to join the Vestry for a presentation on Wednesday, February 5, at 6:30 p.m. in Hauser Hall. Please come meet the four new members of the vestry and hear exciting news about the ongoing construction work in the Kyle House and Church. The stewardship update will include a brief report on the Every Member Canvass and our progress in funding the ministry outlined in the narrative budget. There will also be an update on the way that the Nimocks Challenge funds and Smithson/ Kyle funds are being used to support construction. We will also take time to say farewell to Robert as he departs for Sabbatical. Please join us for the presentation and for the 5:15 service and 6 p.m. dinner if you are able. 4

From the Senior Warden

Senior Warden By John Holmes Senior Warden

I

look forward to being your Senior Warden for the coming year and invite your prayers, encouragement and support. First, I want to thank our outgoing Vestry class of Richard Alligood, Mary Flagg Haugh, Walker Haigh, and Lenora Chandler for the outstanding service they have rendered to St. John’s these past three years. As we have trimmed our office and support staff, our outgoing Wardens, Richard Alligood and Mary Flagg Haugh, have almost functioned as unpaid staff members in the time and effort that they have put in this past year. Mary Flagg, especially, has put in countless hours in managing multiple construction projects and unforeseen crises in managing a historic campus that has over 56,000 square feet of space, 17 HVAC units and 13 separate roofs! Something needs fixing, literally, all the time. She has been blessed with an excellent support network in her Physical Properties Committee, headed up by Dick Kells. Please join me in thanking them for their service. I am excited to work with a young and talented incoming class that joins an already high functioning Vestry team. We will be working over the next few months to bring them up to speed as quickly as possible. Our goal is to make Fr. Robert’s sabbatical leave as seamless as possible. Richard Alligood has left us in great shape with an outstanding lineup of supply priests to cover all services in Fr. Robert’s absence. Fr. Robert and the congregation of St. John’s share a sense of purpose. Only a true sabbatical can offer the priest a real opportunity for rest, renewal, education and reflection. As he enters his 31st year in ministry in The Episcopal Church, and his 10th anniversary at St. John’s, Fr. Robert has earned a well-deserved break. Early 2020 is a particularly beneficial time for Fr. Robert and for the congregation to take time for spiritual renewal before engaging in intentional planning for the third century of ministry at St. John’s. After a full and eventful decade of shared ministry, we are now in a good and healthy place for Fr. Robert to take a renewal leave. Fr. Robert’s absence will allow the opportunity for the people of St. John’s to embrace leadership in a new

way and to take greater ownership of the ministries of the parish. The experience will enable him to embrace a period of rest and renewal that will result in his ability to return with the energy and creativity needed to help lead St. John’s into the future. After an extended period apart, it is my fervent belief that both Fr. Robert and the parishioners of St. John’s will have renewed respect, appreciation and devotion to one another.

sh Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent when we as individuals and as community intentionally turn our focus to reflection, repentance and renewal of life. On Ash Wednesday, we gather for the invitation to a Holy Lent, for prayer, for the imposition of ashes and for Holy Eucharist.

I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy Word. And, to make a right beginning of repentance, and as a mark of our mortal nature, let us now kneel beAs we gather for worship on Ash Wednesday, we will fore the Lord, our maker and redeemer.” focus on the beginning of Lent with the following Next, we will receive the imposition of ashes as an words and invitation from the Book of Common outward and visible sign of our acceptance of the Prayer, pages 264-265: invitation. We will receive ashes placed on our fore“Dear People of God: The first Christians observed heads as we hear the words, “Dust thou art and unto with great devotion the days of our Lord’s passion dust thou shall return.” Thus, we acknowledge our and resurrection, and it became the custom of the mortality on this earth as we embrace the promise Church to prepare for them by a season of penitence of eternal life in heaven. and fasting. This season of Lent provided a time in which converts to the faith were prepared for Holy Baptism. It was also a time when those who, because of notorious sins, had been separated from the body of the faithful were reconciled by penitence and forgiveness, and restored to the fellowship of the Church. Thereby, the whole congregation was put in mind of the message of pardon and absolution set forth in the Gospel of our Savior, and of the need which all Christians continually have to renew their repentance and faith.

Finally, we will receive Holy Eucharist. As we receive the body and blood of Christ, we will be assured of God’s forgiveness and receive strength for the journey.

Ash Wednesday services will take place in the Church at Noon and at 7:00 p.m on February 26. The 7:00 p.m. service will include hymns. We are blessed to welcome the Rev. Dr. Randy Foster as the preacher and celebrant at our Ash Wednesday services.

Annual Diocesan Convention Meets in February

T

he 137th Annual Convention of the Diocese of East Carolina will be held on February 6th and 8th in Wilmington at the Ballast Hotel. This year, the theme for Convention will be “Invite • Welcome • Connect.” We’ll engage in times of study, legislative business, learning about the life and ministry of The Episcopal Church in East Carolina, and opportunities for service. There are a number of diocesan positions open for nominations and several that are Bishop appointments. Delegates representing St. John’s are: John Holmes, Amanda Klinck, Grant Steffan, and Walker Haigh. Melene and Laura Hatcher will be working during the Convention, as the Episcopal Shoppe was again invited to be the bookseller at the Convention. 6

Music Notes By Ryan Pagels, Director of Music

ur new concert series continues on February 9th at 2:00 p.m., with the Methodist University Chorale. This ensemble has been no stranger to us at St. John’s, as they’ve joined us for our 10:30 service several times. In fact, there is a rich tradition of collaborating for decades with St. John’s and Methodist’s music program. Jean Ishee, who served as Director of Music at St. John’s in the 1960’s and 70’s, also taught at what was then Methodist College. Betty-Neill Parsons, who currently sings in the choir, was the director of the choral program at MU until she retired in 2007. My predecessor, Patrick O’Briant, graduated from Methodist, and of course, I teach there now. We also have four students from the Methodist Chorale currently sing in our own choir.

The MU Chorale will present works that will be featured on their upcoming annual tour. This year, our final destination is Pittsburgh, PA, where we will have the opportunity to work with nationally acclaimed composer Jonny Priano, giving a joint concert with his high school choir. Last year, Mr. Priano heard the MU Chorale perform one of his works, and was so impressed, he invited us to come work with him. My primary goal with the concert series is to feature local musicians, giving them an opportunity to share their craft with our community. However, our March concert will bring in a guest artist, from New York City! Edward Washington II, tenor, will present a solo recital with yours truly on March 22nd at 2:00 p.m.. As you’re reading this, he is currently in the Metropolitan Opera’s production of “Porgy and Bess.” Below is an excerpt from his bio; this is certainly a concert you won’t want to miss!

Parish Family Life Greetings for a new year! By Julie MacRae

F

irst, a big thank you to all who made our beautiful rood screen happen. It took many days and many people working together, from trimming every beautiful piece of cedar just right to providing delicious white bean chicken chili to keep all sustained. This was a labor of love from start to finish. Let us all reflect on all the events that we enjoyed as a church family; greening of the rood screen, caroling, fall festival, Wednesday dinners, parish beach trip, and the list continues. Let us all enjoy these events together, giving our time and talent joyfully. Some “floating ideas” to kick-off the new year: bingo night, a silent auction in conjunction with Wednesday dinner (proceeds could be earmarked for a special need in the church), groups, (whether a Sunday school class, EYC, ECW, choir, or anyone who would like to sign-up) could host a coffee hour here and there. Parish family life involves everyone, and at St. John’s, we have a wonderful parish, making a great family. Happy New Year!

or the 3rd year in a row, St. John’s will host the Luke 14 Banquet. The banquet is a joyous event and honors our visually and developmentally impaired friends, family and neighbors. The event will be held on Saturday, March 28, in Smithson Hall. The party will include a luncheon, games, music, dancing and lots of fun for our guests. We will need volunteers to help decorate the church entrance and Smithson Hall. We will also need volunteers to help with parking and various other jobs the day of the event. Table sponsorships will also be available, and this would be a fun project for a small group. Further details will be available in the coming weeks, and a signup sheet will soon be available outside Hauser Hall. ehind the scenes, the Episcopal Youth in the Church (EYC) enjoy many fun activities throughout the year, along with food and fellowship. However, they also participate in many outreach activities as well. They ended 2019 by volunteering their time at the Fall Festival; they made Christmas ornaments for the Hauser Hall Christmas tree; and they created Christmas cards for our homebound parishioners. One of their evening activities for 2020 includes making Valentines for our homebound parishioners. In March the EYC will host the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper. Our EYC have also become much more visible on Sunday mornings during our 10:30 worship service. In addition to serving as acolytes, our youth are greeters, ushers and lay readers. Our youth have become more and more involved in the ministries at St. John’s. As I have said before, our youth are not just our future; they are indeed our present as well.

EYC make Christmas ornaments for the Hauser Hall Christmas tree.

All youth, grades 6-12, are welcome to join the EYC every Sunday morning for Christian Formation. The group meets at 9:15 a.m. upstairs in Room 5. Calling all angels: Guardian Angel Ministry needs volunteers By Lenora Chandler

T

he Guardian Angel Ministry connects our youth, grades 6-12, with adults, through prayer and fellowship during Lent. The goal of the Guardian Angel Program is to let our youth know that someone is praying for them every day. Our young people are growing up in a changing world; they are charting their courses and making decisions that will affect the rest of their lives. They need all the love, support and encouragement that we as a church community can give. Adult volunteers will be assigned a young person from St. John’s Youth Program. During Lent, you will pray daily for that youth and send him/her notes of encouragement and love weekly. You will receive information about his/her prayer requests at the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on February 25 and remain anonymous until the Guardian Angel Lenten Supper April 5. At the dinner, the Guardian Angels and youth will meet each other and enjoy food, fellowship and prayers. Please reach out to Lizzie Shepherd at 910-527-6205 or lizziebenshepherd@gmail.com for more information and to sign up.
