Letter from the President St. John’s Jesuit High School & Academy does not need a second chance to make a great first impression! Since my arrival on campus on July 1, I have been impressed by the facilities and the obvious care they receive. I have been touched by the graciousness of the members of the Board of Trustees, who have welcomed me to their businesses as I learn of the guidance they provide. And now that classes have begun, I have been charmed by the enthusiastic students and dazzled by their teachers who have allowed me to spend time with them in their classes. Although I was a touch disappointed in my score of only 60% on my first quiz in AP U.S. History, I was delighted to report to all who would listen that I successfully solved for ’y’ in Honors Geometry. Due to solid budgeting and the generosity of donors, St. John’s Jesuit provides its young men with a powerful campus-wide technology infrastructure. This is impressive! In classrooms, students have immediate

Among these many terrific first impressions has been one that is core to the school’s mission. During my second week on campus, before students and faculty returned for the start of the fall semester, I encountered recent graduates who reached out to welcome me. At a time when they are surely focused on their academic steps beyond St. John’s Jesuit, they came to share with me how they were well prepared to move on to Notre Dame, Bowling Green and MIT. Not only are these young men intellectually competent, their obvious love for each other and their sincere outreach to me made it clear that they are Men for Others. Please feel free to come to the campus of St. John’s Jesuit High School & Academy at any time. It will be my pleasure to share with you what I am learning about this very special place. Sincerely yours,

Mr. President

No stranger to Jesuit education, Mike Truesdell joins the St. John’s Jesuit family after serving as the President of a Catholic high school in California for nearly a decade. f you stop by St. John’s Jesuit,

looking for the new President, chances are you won’t find him in his office. Although he’s only been on campus since the beginning of July, Mike Truesdell has quickly immersed himself in the SJJ community. Whether it’s sitting in on an Honors Geometry class, participating in the Toledo Labre Program alongside students and faculty while serving the poor or meeting with members of the Board of Trustees at their place of business, Mr. Truesdell has made it his top priority to learn what makes SJJ the special place that it is by observing all of its different facets firsthand. “I think Mike is a visionary who has such natural leadership skills,” Principal Brad Bonham said. “He really relates well with the faculty and staff as well as the students and their parents. He’s made himself very visible throughout the school since the very beginning of his tenure. I think he’s done a phenomenal job so far, and I’ve really enjoyed working with him.” After a nine-year tenure as the President of Cardinal Newman High School in Santa Rosa, California, Mr. Truesdell was named in June as SJJ’s ninth President and the successor to outgoing President Rev. Joaquin Martinez, S.J. Mr. Truesdell, who is the first layman President in SJJ history, was selected after a three-month national search based on his experience as president of an outstanding Catholic high school, his passion for Jesuit education and fostering Jesuit identity and his successful business experience. At Cardinal Newman, Mr. Truesdell grew enrollment by 61 percent at a time when enrollment at peer institutions was declining. He also doubled the assets of the institution by growing endowments that supported tuition assistance and capital improvements. Prior to his time at Cardinal Newman, he served as Dean of the School of Business and Economics at Methodist University in North Carolina and held various leadership roles in the high-tech industry.

“We are thrilled that Mr. Truesdell has joined our team,” said Kurt Miller ’81, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. “He is a well-qualified, experienced executive with deep Catholic roots and is familiar with Jesuit education, ensuring he will model and promote the clear mission and identity of a Jesuit institution.” Born in Kalispell, Montana, Mr. Truesdell first became acquainted with the Jesuits while he was a student at his all-male diocesan high school in Spokane, Wash. Located nearby was the former Mt. Saint Michael’s Seminary, and several Jesuits taught at Mr. Truesdell’s high school. Later as an undergraduate student at the University of Notre Dame and as a graduate student at Washington University in St. Louis, he received instruction from Jesuit professors and lecturers. But where he became fully engrossed in Jesuit education was at St. Ignatius College Prep in San Francisco – as a parent. Mr. Truesdell’s son, Kerger, is a graduate of SI, where he starred as the quarterback of the football team among other accolades, and that’s where Mr. Truesdell discovered the true value of a Jesuit education. “The quality of his Jesuit education, which parallels that of the formation offered at St. John’s Jesuit, allowed him to enter the University of Notre Dame with 17 hours of college credit through his high school AP courses,” Mr. Truesdell said. “The experience of his Kairos Retreat strengthened his Catholic identity. And the depth of care for one another among his Jesuit-educated friends serves as a stirring example of the guiding motto of St. John’s Jesuit: ’Men for Others.’”

” People in leadership roles can’t do anything by themselves, but one thing we can do is hold up a mirror and say as a group, here’s what we’re looking at and is this the best picture? That’s the Jesuit way – the Magis – asking ourselves how we can improve and do better.” – mike truesdell, SJJ president While there are several examples from which to choose, the one that best exemplifies the Men for Others credo exhibited amongst Kerger and his friends, according to Mr. Truesdell, begins with a wedding in Columbus on June 30, 2012. “It was the wedding of our son and new daughterin-law,” Mr. Truesdell said. “Columbus is quite a distance from San Francisco, and it was touching to be there as a parent and see all of these guys travel from nearly all across the country just to be there for a day.” That bond Mr. Truesdell’s son has with his classmates – a shared bond amongst St. John’s Jesuit graduates and graduates from Jesuit schools all over the world – is something he’ll have forever. “The ’Men for Others’ is not to be taken lightly,” Mr. Truesdell said. “Those guys will be Men for Others for their entire lives. They’re good people, and I’m not

just saying this because one of them happens to be my son. “What they’re doing, how they treat one another, how they treat their siblings and families, that wholeness of mind, body and spirit that we teach here is displayed in everything that they do.” As for his plans for the future course of St. John’s Jesuit, Mr. Truesdell touched on a concept true to the core of Ignatian spirituality. “People in leadership roles can’t do anything by themselves, but one thing we can do is hold up a mirror and say as a group, here’s what we’re looking at and is this the best picture?” Mr. Truesdell said. “That’s the Jesuit way – the Magis – asking ourselves how we can improve and do better. And with the 50th anniversary of the school approaching, it may be good timing for us to do that.”

Born to Serve

Phil Skeldon teaches the lessons of service as a molder of young men at St. John’s Jesuit. ometimes you have to kill a few rats

to earn justice. That’s one lesson seared into Phil Skeldon’s consciousness from an early age. Knowing his mother and some of her Old West End neighborhood friends took a bag of dead rats into Toledo Municipal Court to demonstrate just how slummy the slum landlords were toward the less fortunate, he got the message as well. The longtime director of the Christian Service Department at St. John’s Jesuit says such lessons are indelible. “Mom was always interested in social justice,” he recalls. “She was on the original Board of the Bethany House (a women’s shelter). It’s what I grew up with – always seeing the plight of those less fortunate.” It may have been part of the fabric of his early life, but he has taken the lesson to new heights as an educator and molder of young men. While at the University of Toledo, he became involved with the Sojourners Club and other outreach ministries. When he was hired at St. John’s 28 years ago to teach and “spend one period a day working in Christian Service,” he says he wasn’t aware of the Jesuit commitment to social justice. Today that emphasis defines him. “The whole Jesuit charisma – the Magis, the man for others direction, having a faith that does justice,” the concepts spill out of him with the power of a life lived with such convictions. “I always believed in working for social justice, but the Jesuits gave me the terms to define it,” he explains. “It’s great to do service, but it’s not enough. You need to start asking why. That’s what I tell our guys. Why are people in these positions? What can each of us do to change things? I’ve become more committed to challenging students. If they develop relationships with the people they serve, it is more difficult to walk away from their suffering.” Others have taken note of Phil walking the walk in an exemplary way. He was awarded two of the area’s most prestigious teaching awards during the 2012-13 school year: The Golden Apple, given by the Diocese of Toledo, and the BCSN Teacher of the Year Award, from Buckeye CableSystem. The accolades “aren’t about me” he insists. “I see it as a recognition that this school is doing something valuable, something that changes our students’ lives,” he says. “St. John’s considers the importance of educating the entire person and this office demonstrates

that – it’s a symbol to the kids. The commitment to social justice is critically infused throughout the building; it’s not one teacher, with one message. It’s part of the culture. That’s why it is impactful.” And Phil sees that message more vital than ever. “You can’t put blinders on when you get to know a homeless person. You can’t go back and live your life the same way when you see the difficulties others have on a daily basis. When you question, why do I have it so good, and these people don’t? You open your heart to a different understanding.” Over his tenure he has seen the advent of the popular international service programs. Most recently a weekly outreach to the homeless, Labre, consists of two vans-full of students and meals winding through Toledo’s central city. Working in conjunction with Mark Dubielak ’76 of St. Ursula Academy and SUA students, every Monday a group heads out to feed and promote fellowship with those on the margins of society. “One student writes what we encounter: someone needs school pants for her sons; Betty’s birthday is next week; John is struggling with alcoholism. We try to see them as people and when we get back we pray for their individual needs.” The program has been “hugely successful,” he says, because “it breaks down stereotypes. It opens the students to diversity. It changes their perspective.” Looking back on almost three decades at SJJ, Phil says he feels the faculty and staff have embraced the Jesuit challenge to have faith that does justice with more vitality than ever. “As the amount of Jesuits on campus decreased, the teachers have become more Jesuit,” he explains. “When there were 20 Jesuits in the building, there was a feeling of ‘they’ll do that.’ Now we know we must impart the Jesuit message. The laity here has taken that role. It’s a tribute to former SJJ Presidents Don Vettese and Tom Pipp. They saw what was coming (in terms of Jesuits on staff) and prepared us for it.” Although the core of the Christian Service program is still juniors and seniors serving weekly in the community, Phil believes there is a greater depth that has been cultivated. “Students develop relationships with the people they are serving,” he says. “The same agency, the same time each week. It’s more difficult to walk away and ignore their plight – whatever it is. Our hope is that these experiences have lifelong impact. It’s living the goals of the grad at grad: To be loving; to be committed to doing justice.” fall FALL2013 2013

S t. John ’s J e s u i t Alex Lorton ’02 Co-founder/owner of Cater2.me

What made you decide to attend St. John’s Jesuit?

Explain your company Cater2.me ?

It was never really even a question for whether or not I would attend SJJ. I only took the entrance exam at SJJ and had no intention of going anywhere else (I don’t think I even toured anywhere else). I was wholly convinced that there wasn’t a better school in or around Toledo in terms of academics, athletics or quality of people associated with the institution and that’s something I still believe today.

Cater2.me is the company I started in 2010. We are a food & tech company that enables recurring catering orders for companies that get catering on a regular basis. For example, we help companies that buy lunch for their employees on a daily basis by suggesting great local food vendors, putting together customized menus for them, handling all logistics and centralizing customer service and billing. We’re working with a lot of well-known tech companies, including Pinterest, Yahoo, LinkedIn and Kickstarter to make their company meals not just a source of nourishment but also an occasion in which their employees can gather together to form great company culture. The idea was born at my previous job, where I was receiving lunch on a regular basis and (though appreciative of the free lunch) was unimpressed with the lack of variety and quality (think stale turkey sandwiches and mixed green salads) and thought that I could do it better. I teamed up with a friend from Penn and Cater2.me was born. We started in San Francisco and have expanded to New York (where I currently live) and Chicago.

Who were your biggest influences from the faculty and staff while at SJJ? One of SJJ’s main strengths is just how replete it is with amazing teachers and staff. From Mr. Corrigan, who really taught me what it meant to absorb and appreciate vast amounts of information in World History & AP US History, to Frau Brunner, who taught me German and who always had such great energy, to Mr. Harms, who was not only an amazing English teacher but who also regularly doled out a masterful combination of humor and sage advice, to Dr. Warrick, who helped guide me through the rigors of the college application process, I was blessed to have had such incredible guidance through the years. Do you have a favorite story or tradition during your time at SJJ? While athletics were a huge part of my time at SJJ, both playing and watching, my favorite tradition has to be Kairos. The power of that time still sticks with me. Oh, and giving the valedictory address at graduation was pretty cool, too.

Sum up what being a Titan means to you? Being a man for others and a commitment to excellence. SJJ prepared me for the rigors of life after high school, both from a work/school perspective and from a personal/spiritual perspective.

Where did you pursue your postsecondary education? I attended the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Economics, concentrating in Accounting, Legal Studies and Entrepreneurship and minoring in German.

So you’re in San Francisco, New York & Chicago… What’s next? We’re working hard on expansion possibilities and though I can’t share specifics at the moment, we’re confident our business model can work in every major market in the US, Canada, Europe and beyond.

What is a day in the life of Alex Lorton, co-founder of Cater2.me, like? Being a founder is far more engrossing and involved than I could have ever imagined; it’s a truly 24/7 responsibility and I regularly log 100+ hours per week. With 35 employees (and growing), a lot of my time is spent managing my team to achieve their best and the rest is spent planning for our expansion/growth, from scouting out new cities, to hiring for a whole host of new positions to setting up new systems and processes to enable our growth.

Rev. Scott R. Carroll ’84 (1966–2013)

The Rev. Scott R. Carroll ’84, who was ordained a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Toledo on May 8, 2013, passed away two days later after a long battle with cancer. He was 46. Bishop Leonard P. Blair ordained the transitional deacon a priest at his parents’ home with immediate family members present. He was named associate pastor of his home parish, St. Joseph in Maumee. The ordination Mass was concelebrated by the priests of St. Joseph parish, Frs. Keith Stripe and Kishore Kottana, and by the Diocese Vocations Director, Monsignor Charles Singler. Bishop Blair has asked that all the faithful of the Toledo Diocese continue to remember Fr. Carroll in their prayers. Fr. Carroll was due to be ordained with his classmates on June 22, but it became clear that an earlier ordination might be prudent, according to family. Born on Aug. 5, 1966 to Robert and the late Patricia Carroll, the priest is the step-son of Connie Carroll, and is also survived by his brothers Patrick ’82 and Tim ’88.

He studied education at the University of Toledo and went on to earn a Master’s degree in history there as well. He also attained a Master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Dayton and taught middle school social studies before entering seminary. Before finishing his studies at St. Meinrad Seminary in Indiana, Fr. Carroll had attended Holy Spirit Seminary. He did summer ministry at St. Paul in Norwalk and at his home parish, and did a pastoral year at St. Paul. In addition to teaching and history, Fr. Carroll was interested in 4-H and sports. He wrote on Toledo’s vocations website that “I consider the vocation of priesthood to be both the most demanding and rewarding thing that God could ever call me to do. It is my duty to find out if this is what is meant for me, to represent Jesus by teaching, learning and just being there for people.”

Ever Excelling as a Man for Others Dan Kennedy, n.S.J.’08 doesn’t just abide by the mottos of his high school and college alma maters, he lives them. ive him a mot to and he lives it.

“Men for Others” he embraced while in high school, and “ever to excel” was his college credo. Excelling at most of what he does, his personal journey to excellence includes following the path God has for him. Dan Kennedy, n.S.J. ’08, who just five short years ago said goodbye to being a lacrosse goalie, student body president, hockey team manager and the gamut of Christian Service volunteer opportunities at St. John’s Jesuit, took his quest for knowledge and discernment to Boston College. Just as he exemplified at SJJ, his four years at BC – “an amazing education,” says he – resulted in distinction.

Excellence is no understatement. Dano, as he is affectionately known, received the Rev. Edward H. Finnegan, S.J. Memorial Award — Boston College’s most prestigious senior honor given to the student who best exemplifies the spirit of BC’s motto, “Ever to Excel.” With majors in theology and philosophy, he intended to see if those inklings of a religious vocation considered during high school would bear out in college. “The hallmark of my BC experience was service learning,” Dano explains. “PULSE, one of the oldest service learning programs in the country, really shaped my time there.”

Completing his first year as a Jesuit novice deepened his sense of being where God has called him. Under the director of novices whom he knows well from St. John’s Jesuit, Fr. Tom Pipp, S.J., Dano’s days are ones of study and service. “test of your trust in the Lord’s providence: being sent International immersion experiences, like his out for 30 days with $35 and a one-way bus ticket to high school trips to Guatemala, prompted his reflection. experience life on the margins.” College mission trips to Belize and Mexico made him From New Orleans to Atlanta and back, Dano question: “What have I been doing since Guatemala? says “you build your trust in God. Ties That Bind Following in a long line of SJJ supporters, Patrick Hanna ’71 has decided to include his alma mater in his estate plans for the continued maintenance of the McDonough Chapel. hen it came time for Patrick hanna ’71

to decide where he would be going to high school, it was an obvious choice. Mr. Hanna’s mother’s cousin, J. Norman McDonough, was a 1927 graduate of St. John’s High School and a 1931 graduate of St. John’s College in Toledo. He served as an English instructor at St. John’s College from 1932-33 and later was the dean of the St. Louis University law school. “Growing up, all I ever heard about was St. John’s and the Jesuits,” Mr. Hanna recalled. “There was no question where I’d go to high school.” But that’s not where the story ends. At the passing of Mr. McDonough’s wife, Beth, St. John’s Jesuit received a bequest for the renovation of the Chapel, which in turn allowed for the creation of the McDonough Chapel – a small chapel located behind the larger Chapel of St. John Berchmans. “The original Chapel looked like a closet,” Mr. Hanna said. “But after the renovation, the new Chapel is beautiful.” After visiting SJJ in April of 2013, Mr. Hanna reflected on how he could best leave a lasting legacy at his alma mater. He had just suffered a heart attack one month prior to his visit, and as a result he had begun updating his estate plans.

“That was the impetus,” Mr. Hanna said of his health scare. “When thinking about how we’d be able to help, my family improved the look of [the Chapel] and now I just want to help maintain it. “As a way of ensuring that the chapel will continue to be able to serve the Jesuit priests teaching at, and the students and alumni of, St. John’s Jesuit, I have specifically included funds to maintain the chapel in our estate plans.” Mr. Hanna’s family ties to St. John’s Jesuit continue even to this day. Although he and his wife, Rae Ann, now live outside Kalamazoo, Mich., Mr. Hanna’s connection to SJJ remains through his niece, Jackie Karl-DeFrain, who participates in the Titans’ Marching Band. “I still believe the best education I ever received was at St. John’s,” Mr. Hanna said. “There’s just something about those four years there. Even though I went to the University of Toledo and later got a Master’s degree there, the things that I learned and still use today I think came from St. John’s and the Jesuits who were important in teaching me those lessons. “What I want to make sure is that others will have the same opportunity to learn like I did and take advantage of it.”

For more information on how you can include St. John’s Jesuit in your estate plans, contact Brett Loney ’88, Vice President for Advancement, at 419-720-0765 or loney@sjjtitans.org.

Unconditional Givers Alumni parents John & Dawn Christy continue to support SJJ as members of the President’s Council and do so by designating their gifts to the We Are SJ Annual Fund. s newcomers to the Toledo area

in 1996 with no previous ties to Northwest Ohio, John and Dawn Christy knew that good schools were very important for their young family. They settled in Ottawa Hills as a beautiful place to live with a well-respected school system to boot. Education continued to play an important role as their children reached high school age, and the Christy’s opted to look into St. John’s Jesuit and several other private schools in the area. What they quickly discovered was SJJ offered the right blend of academic excellence, extracurricular opportunities and a commitment to service and spiritual development. “After comparing the results of our research, there was no question that St. John’s was the right place for our sons,” said Mr. Christy, Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary at Owens Corning. “It combined an exceptional academic curriculum with a diverse mix of incoming students that would challenge our sons socially as well.” After their son James ’09 enrolled at SJJ and later Andrew ’10, the Christy’s discovered two reasons why SJJ is such a special place. “We found the instructors to be very open and caring life mentors for our sons, in addition to providing academic challenges in the classroom,” Mr. Christy said. “This proved particularly true in the case of retreats and the Guatemala service trip during the summer after junior year.” That caring mentorship was also highlighted in the second aspect of the St. John’s experience that proved especially valuable for the Christy’s sons. “The St. John’s motto of creating Men for Others proved to be one of the most rewarding aspects of our sons’ high school experience,” Mr. Christy explained.

“The service concept of caring for and giving to others was woven into every aspect of the academic and extracurricular calendar. “It has become an important aspect of our sons’ ongoing commitment to making a difference wherever they go and whatever they do, and we give large credit to the thought process that was instilled in them as a result of their development as young men at St. John’s.” Now that their sons have graduated from SJJ and moved on to college – James, a Dartmouth College graduate, and Andrew, a senior at Northwestern University where his sister, Caroline, graduated – the Christy’s have continued their financial support of St. John’s Jesuit as members of the President’s Council. The Christy’s have made the choice to make unrestricted gifts to the We Are SJ Annual Fund, meaning their support goes directly to the areas of most need at St. John’s Jesuit. “We’re not educators and we respect the administrators at St. John’s. They know much better than us where the funds need to be spent,” Mr. Christy said. As for why they continue to support SJJ as alumni parents? “Our sons’ experience at St. John’s was such a positive experience, and we feel it’s important to give back to what we believe in,” Mrs. Christy said. “As we continue to watch our sons grow up, the more and more impressed we are with the training and education they received here.” Added Mr. Christy: “We can think of no better way to combine our appreciation for what St. John’s has provided to our family with our desire to give back to the community that has come to mean so much to us, than to provide funds annually to enhance the ability of St. John’s to deliver a quality high school education to other members of the Toledo community.”
