St. John Bosco High School Salesian College Preparatory

PRESIDENT’S LETTER

“A saint is a person who gives of themself without asking for anything in return. That’s how simple it is to be a saint.” - St. John Bosco Dear Friends of St. John Bosco, I find this quote from our patron saint to be simple, yet very insightful. Don Bosco was dedicated to drawing out the best in each of his students. He focused particularly on the financially disadvantaged students, because in the mid-1800s in Italy, there were no teachers, classrooms or other ways to educate the poor. In our almost eighty years of Salesian education here at St. John Bosco High School, we continue to educate students with the spirit of St. John Bosco, regardless of their family’s financial circumstances. This Annual Report is an accounting of the gifts received from our donors during the most recent fiscal year, who made it possible to continue our Salesian tradition of bringing out the best in our young men, regardless of economics. Through your generosity, we were able to minister to over 860 young men this year. The 82 members of our faculty and staff truly care for each young man, ensuring that no one student is overlooked from our love and care during his years on campus. In addition to ensuring that our faculty and staff are the best available, we have a campus that requires maintenance and updating. As generous donors, you make it possible to systematically update or replace our physical infrastructure. Thanks to your support, we are able to focus our attention and resources toward best serving our young men. We assist with financial aid for families who need our assistance. You also provide the funds for our Principal’s, Humanities, Social Sciences, STEM, Music Interpretation, Alumni and Military scholarships. Your annual gifts and pledges are directed to our students and teachers in order to better meet their needs. 2 Corinthians 9:7 reads, “Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” Thank you for your generosity to St. John Bosco High School. May God Continue to Bless You,

Dennis Mulhaupt President

BOARD CHAIR’S LETTER BOARD OF DIRECTORS John Kelleher Jr. ’97 - Chair Bill Brown ’84 Alex Chaves ’81

To My St. John Bosco Family:

Susanne Devine Stephen W. Fillet ’80

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for all your support. St. John Bosco High School is a place very dear to my heart. I was the first boy born in my family, in the first generation to even consider college. My three sisters were born in New Jersey, a world apart. My parents relocated to California, had me, and needed a place for their only son to continue his education. I am so blessed that Diane and John Sr. chose St. John Bosco for and with me. I graduated in 1997, and joined the Board almost a decade ago. I am now in my third year as Board Chair, and watching this campus and community grow has given me some of the greatest joy in my life. Now, I am honored to help future Brave families make the same decision my parents made 25 years ago. Exciting things are happening at St. John Bosco. We have new facilities, and plans for more. We have repaired critical campus infrastructure, and must continue to do so. Our students are achieving at the highest levels in all aspects of the Salesian Charism: Church, school, playground, and at home.

ADMINISTRATION Dennis Mulhaupt President

Our successes have also come with greatly increased enrollment. Over 860 young men now call St. John Bosco High School home. I am ecstatic that our school is one showing much growth, which is unfortunately not the case at many Catholic Schools.

Christian De Larkin

With this increased enrollment comes increased need. Over 50% of our students receive some form of tuition assistance. These families continue to need generous donors to help their Bosco journey become a reality. On behalf of the Board of Directors and the leadership of St. John Bosco High School, I ask you to prayerfully consider a gift of any amount to the 2018-2019 Bosco Fund.

Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations

Thank you for your all your support. Thank you for helping those with need afford the gift of a St. John Bosco High School education. And — if you are the parent of a past, present, or future Brave — thank you for choosing to join this Family. In Christ,

What is the Bosco Fund? In order to stay competitive and strengthen their programs, as well as keep tuition as reasonable as possible for their families, Independent and Catholic schools around the country have increased emphasis on fundraising from all aspects of their community: alumni and their families, current families, and friends. St. John Bosco High School is no different, and in order to hold tuition competitive and remain dedicated to our Salesian mission, we ask the entire Bosco community to prayerfully consider a gift to the newlycreated Bosco Fund. Most do not realize that the cost to educate a Bosco student exceeds the amount charged for tuition. That gap is made up by the Bosco Fund. For the 2018-2019 School Year, the gap is $3,109 per student. Independent of new buildings or separate fundraising initiatives, the Bosco Fund directly helps us in our day-to-day operations, and gives Bosco the needed flexibility to afford the essentials. This year, we have a goal of raising $550,000. We hope each and every member of the Bosco Community will participate at any level. The Bosco Fund helps us maintain - and elevate – the Bosco experience. Here are just a few examples of what the Bosco Fund helps support:

Commitment to financial aid and socioeconomic diversity

Facilities maintenance of our 36-acre campus

Merit-based scholarships

Optimal class sizes

A robust and healthy Campus Ministry program

Strengthening of Academic Pathways Co-curricular activities such as Academic Decathlon, Mock Trial, Robotics, and BraveVision

Each young man benefits from your fully tax-deductible gift to the Bosco Fund, every day. 6

The Don Bosco Society

The Don Bosco Society recognizes leadership gifts to the Bosco Fund. The Don Bosco Society, named in honor of our patron saint, recognizes leadership gifts to the Bosco Fund. The Don Bosco Society levels of giving have been renamed with the 2018-2019 giving year, which began on July 1. “We are very excited to release the new leadership giving levels to the Bosco Fund,” commented Phil Consuegra, Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations. “Connecting our current leaders with foundational figures and symbols is a special way to honor the commitment and generosity of those who make our school’s well-being possible. They are the keepers of the tradition of love for our young men.” Members of the Don Bosco Society will include alumni, parents, parents of alumni, grandparents and friends – at the following levels.

THE IMPACT OF YOUR GENEROSITY

A Story of How Financial Aid and Family Values Sent a Brave to MIT By Jack Findley He moved to California at the age of four, along with his parents and older sister. His mother and father, maintenance employees who worked the night shift, did not speak English, so Juan Aleman often relied on his older sister Veronica to help him communicate and negotiate his way through the complications of getting an education in America. “My older sister spoke English, so she helped me along the way. Together, we figured out how to submit an application to Bosco,” Juan noted. “Most importantly, she helped me gather all of the documents we needed to apply for financial aid.” Fourteen years after moving to California, at the age of eighteen, Juan is now a Bosco alumnus from the Class of 2018 and had his choice of attending some of the top universities in the country. Earning acceptances and scholarships to Harvard, Cornell, Penn, USC, Berkeley, UCLA, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and others, he decided to attend MIT this Fall. Juan is majoring in Brain and Cognitive Sciences, and plans to move on to medical school after earning his undergraduate degree. After visiting the east coast to consider his college offers, Juan settled on MIT because of the help and support that they are giving incoming freshman and their parents. He also was attracted to the Cambridge, Massachusetts area. As he says, “it just felt right for me.”

night and came home exhausted early in the morning, but they would never get any rest until I was prepared for school and on my way each morning. My education was important to them, and they were very proud when I was accepted to Bosco.” “In grade school, music was my main interest. I did not really have a strong academic drive until I experienced Bosco. My grade school principal recommended that I take a look at Bosco, and I was reluctant at first because most of my friends were going to other high schools. However, my sister helped me arrange a shadow day at Bosco, and it immediately became my choice.”

“It would have been very difficult for me to attend Bosco without having financial assistance to cover many of the costs. Otherwise, mom and dad simply could not afford to send me here.” - Juan Aleman ’18

Juan credits the work ethic that he learned from his parents, the support of his family and the opportunities available at St. John Bosco High School as the foundations underlying his success.

“I recall that as a new freshman, I attended a student assembly where the seniors were being honored for their academic achievements. I was fascinated by those seniors who had high grade point averages, and who were being accepted to great colleges all across the country,” Juan remarked. “I decided at that time to pursue an academic path and see where it would take me.”

“My parents would work all

“While at Bosco, I completed four years in the Engineering Pathway, and kept my interest in music

by playing the sax and trombone in the band. I took eleven different Advanced Placement courses, where I learned that hard work and perseverance really do pay off. Bosco has so much to offer those who want to take full advantage of the opportunities. At Bosco, I was strongly supported by my teachers, counselors and fellow students to excel. It was a life-changing experience that I will never forget.” “The Engineering Pathway was where I learned how to overcome a problem. This was an important way that Bosco changed and benefitted me. It taught me to break a problem down into its components, and analyze them in order to create solutions. This problem-solving ability not only helps me in school, it also helps me in life.” “It would have been very difficult for me to attend Bosco without having financial assistance to cover many of the costs,” noted Juan. “Otherwise, my mom and dad simply could not afford to send me here.”

Juan has a long way to go to get his medical degree, do his residency, set up his practice and move forward with his life. However, he is convinced that if he ever has his own son, he would want him to attend Bosco. “I will miss this place and recognize the importance of a Bosco education in my life. If someday I ever have a son, I would want him to have the same high school experiences that I had at Bosco. My sister Veronica and I are the first generation to attend college in our family, and I would want my son to be the second generation in our family to attend Bosco and get a college degree.”

VICE PRESIDENT FOR DEVELOPMENT & ALUMNI RELATIONS

Dear Members of the Bosco Family, During my travels over the summer, a new acquaintance asked me to describe the St. John Bosco High School community in a single word. While this type of task is not usually my area of strength, great confidence was gained as a number of poignant terms immediately came to mind. After a rigorous thirty-second long selection process, it was determined that the word would be “gratitude.” In my time at Bosco, I have constantly marveled at the omnipresent sense of gratitude our community has and shows. We are grateful for The Lord’s abundant blessings of success in our academic, arts, and athletic programs. We are grateful for the opportunity to minister and give back in Christian service to communities less fortunate than ours. We are grateful for those who have walked these halls before us, and are equally as grateful for the opportunity to serve as stewards of that legacy for those who will come after. And, for purposes of the focus of the preceding pages, we are grateful to those community members whose generosity makes it possible for us to live, learn, play, and worship in the Bosco community each day. It is this immense sense of gratitude that helps to anchor the Bosco Brotherhood in a foundation of reason, religion, and loving kindness. In the coming weeks, we will ask our community to further support us in our effort to help our young men grow into thoughtful, respectful, and talented adults rooted in a deeper sense of Christ. We ask that you and your family prayerfully consider your gift to the Bosco Fund, which will immediately go to work to help our school stay strong each and every day. On behalf of the entire Bosco community, and most importantly – on behalf of the 862 young men who we have the privilege to teach, thank you for your continuing prayers for and steadfast support of St. John Bosco High School Servite Domino in Laetitia,
