You can be part of something historic. It is the final push being made to rid the world of the last vestiges of polio. “End Polio Now,” a campaign of Rotary International to get ride of this disease that has been known as the “World’s Greatest Crippler,” is leading this final push and this coming weekend, members of the Rotary Club of Ottawa – Stittsville will be on hand at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex on Shea Road in Stittsville to provide information about this final push and to answer questions about the initiative.

This coming weekend will also be an opportunity for you to make a donation to help in this drive to eliminate polio totally from the world. Tax receipts will be issued for donations over $25. This fundraising is important because Rotary has to raise $200 million as its contribution to receive a $355 million challenge grant being provided by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Each Rotary Club around the world has been challenged to raise some of these Rotary funds and that is what the Rotary Club of Ottawa – Stittsville will be trying to do this weekend. Iron lung on display at GRC

From page 1 A special feature of this weekend’s Rotary display at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex will be an iron lung which may just be the first time that this machine, once so prevalent in fighting polio, has been in Ottawa in recent years. The iron lung was used from the 1930’s through to 1960 to help people breathe as they battled polio. The Rotary Club of Ottawa – Stittsville is partnering with the city of Ottawa’s Public Health Department , the Canadian Coalition for Immunization and the Canadian Global Immunization Group for this “End Polio Now” exhibit at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex this weekend. Rotary International has been working to rid the world of polio since 1985. At that time, polio was still in 125 countries around the world, affecting over 350,000 people per year, with 1,000 dying each day. By 2010, polio was considered epidemic in only four countries, with less than 2,000 cases per year. Canada itself was declared “polio free” in 1994 but unless it is wiped out around the world, there is always the possibility that it could return. The disease has to be stopped in these

infected countries and then there must be surveillance for several years to ensure that the virus is completely wiped out. This polio virus destroys nerve cells that activate muscles and cannot be rejuvenated. In this campaign to eliminate polio from the world, the “polio plus” vaccine distributed by Rotary International and its partners contains vaccine not only to combat polio but also measles, whooping cough and tetanus. It costs only ten cents per dose and is distributed by volunteers. The targeted population for this vaccine is every child under five. To date, over two billion such children have been immunized. The four countries where polio continues to be a problem are Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan. There are National Immunization Days which are held in each of these countries to try to immunize all children. The “End Polio Now” display at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex in Stittsville will be there this Friday, April 15 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; this Saturday, April 16, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and this Sunday, April 17 from noon to 5 p.m. 437099

Famous singers like Bing Crosby, Connie Francis and Roger Whittaker are among those who have recorded “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling,” a familiar standard for generations which has been recorded on over 200 singles and albums over the years. First published in 1912, the song gain notoriety in Canada in 1985 when then Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and United States president Ronald Reagan combined to sing the song at the so-called Shamrock Summit. But there can be no greater evidence of the song’s universal appeal and widespread popularity than the singing of its familiar refrain by the audience at last Sunday afternoon’s spring concert in Stittsville hosted by the 14 voice Goulbourn Male Chorus. While Craig Edwardson of the Male Chorus sang the song’s lesser known verses as a solo, the refrain was lustily sung by both the audience and the Male Chorus, filling St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, the site of the concert, with the haunting melody of this Irish favourite. This was one of two audience singalong tunes in the concert, with the other being the American Civil War song “Aura Lee.” Elvis Presley’s famous “Love Me Tender” hit was adapted from this song. In any case, this second audience participation tune also evoked a loud and energetic audience response, causing Male Chorus music director Robert Dueck to

comment that a Stittsville choir should be created given all of the wonderful voices in evidence in this singalong at the concert. And what a concert it was! As spring raindrops fell outside, a wide range of songs including sea shanties, spirituals, folk tunes and others filled the church interior, with the rich, full voices of the Male Chorus resonating throughout the high-ceiling’d church. Male Chorus MC Rene Normandin, in his introductory remarks, said that the concert would be a storybook of songs featuring a wide genre of music and he was right on in that observation. The trio of rollicking sea shanties that began the concert brought the rhythm of the sea to the concert. “Fire Down Below,” the third one, could not be missed as Chorus member Art van Draanen tooted on a ship’s horn at the start of each verse. This horn proved so attention-grabbing that it was used to alert concert goers to the end of the later intermission period, calling them back for the second half of the performance. These sea shanties were followed by a change of pace somewhat, two more mellow spirituals, “Hand Me Down My Silver Trumpet (Gabriel),” and “The Chariot Spiritual,” urging preparation for judgement day. Three folk songs, with different beats, followed, with soloist Patrick Tang starting off “My Heart’s in the Highlands, “ followed by “The Lorelei” and “Carrickfergus” (“I wish I were in Carrickfer-

recipe as written in the program. Door bells, not jingle bells, and cannonballs, not soccer balls, were two of these discrepancies. Three songs, “The Mighty Oak Tree,” “Homeward Bound” and “River in Judea,” with its great harmonic sound, rounded out the concert which ended with “We’re the Men of the Chorus,” the same song which opened the concert. And while the Chorus sung “We’re the men of the chorus, we’re the men/ We’re the ones you seldom hear,” this could hardly have been farther from the truth at this concert. The Male Chorus and its melodies and harmonies were heard loud and clear and were thoroughly enjoyed by audience members. “It was just a pleasure to sing for you,” music director Robert Dueck told the audience after the final song. The spring nature of the concert was further enhanced by three floral bouquets which graced the front of the church thanks to Pretty Pots Florist of Stittsville. Barb Creech is the accompanist for the Goulbourn Male Chorus. Members of the Male Chorus are Art van Draanen, Tom Kobolak, Patrick Tang, Jean Wong, Craig Edwardson, Don Gillen, John McGinn, Leo Mevel, Jack Barker, Michael Hogan, Doug Kendall, David Lockyer, Rene Normandin and Don Snyder. Any men interested in singing with the Goulbourn Male Chorus starting in the 2011 fall session should contact music director Robert Dueck at 613-836-1824 or by email at dueckrobt@gmail.com. The Male Chorus is now preparing for a concert in Richmond on Sunday, May 1.

CARLETON-MISSISSIPPI MILLS Carleton-Mississippi Mills was created in 1987 from parts of Lanark–Renfrew– Carleton and Nepean–Carleton. The suburban and rural area includes southwestern suburbs of Ottawa and the town of Mississippi Mills in Lanark County. While the riding has elected Liberal candidates and a Canadian Alliance mem-

ber in the past, the area has predominantly been represented by a Tory. Conservative MP Gordon O’Connor was elected in 2004 and is facing opposition from Liberal candidate Karen McCrimmon, NDP representative Erin Peters and Green candidate John Hogg.

Strong communities and increased public transportation Name: John Hogg Party: Green John Hogg, a Kanata based high-tech worker, is running as the Green Party candidate in Carleton-Mississippi Mills. Hogg has lived in the riding for 21 years with his family, holding bachelor and masters degrees from the University of Toronto in computer science. Like many in Kanata, he was attracted to high-tech and he put his skills to use, working in several different roles at different companies. He saw the broad range in the sector, and increasingly saw how green initiatives could be applied. Now, he works at Intertek, where he helps companies follow environmental regulations. “Somebody has to be a voice – if not me, then who?” said Hogg. He first got into politics in the 2007 provincial election, after he didn’t see the best representation for him in other parties, and liking the Green Party’s

long term plans. “It’s not just two years, four years, but 10, 20 years,” he said. “The Green Party sees the future.” He also appreciates that the Green Party is different than other parties in the entire approach to politics. Instead of looking at large issues, they rally for issues that are smaller and decentralized, and encourage parties to work together. He used the example of biofuel – instead of focus on increased production; there should be a focus on using less. And they should be looking at ways to mix more environmentally friendly power sources – such as wind farms and solar power – in with more traditional and reliable forms. He said the greatest misconception about the Green Party is the inability to govern. The Green Party has Vision Green, a full campaign platform including budget and a strategy to decrease the deficit. “For voters that want something different, I’m the choice,” he said. Hogg’s main campaign points are green technology support and develop-

ment, increase rural access to Internet to improve services, better health care plans and pensions. For the Carleton-Mississippi Mills riding, Hogg wants to see a strengthened community with increased public transportation, and better pension and long-term disability benefits. He wants to rework pensions so residents, whose futures may have been hurt financially by Nortel, wouldn’t have to worry. Hogg is lucky and can usually walk to his office, but sees a struggle in Ottawa’s public transportation. “When we cut costs for public transportation, we don’t save money – people take cars,” he said. Another campaign point has become the purchase of F-35 jets for the Canadian military, at an estimated cost of $30 billion. Hogg has publically criticized the fighters purchase to replace CF-18 jets, which he said have lots of life left in them. He sees the money better invested elsewhere; preferably diplomacy and development to avoid military solutions altogether.

McCrimmon seeks balance between people and money Name: Karen McCrimmon Party: Liberal After following her calling for 31 years, Karen McCrimmon has found another as Liberal party candidate in Carleton-Mississippi Mills. “I’m supposed to do this,” she said of her run for Parliament. Following her retirement from the Canadian Armed Forces in 2006, she went back to school to study mediation and negotiation, and worked in that field. McCrimmon said she’s running for the Liberals because it’s the party that balances the needs of people with the needs of the economy. Remove the Conservatives’ continued tax breaks for big business and you’ll have the money to invest in people. “The Liberal party tries to look after people at the same time as looking after our finances,” McCrimmon said. “I’m a very pragmatic person. “People are not happy we’re borrowing $10 billion to hand over to big com-

panies.” McCrimmon also comes across as confident and committed. She doesn’t need notes during an interview, and speaks freely on any subjcet that comes up, like someone ready to move on to the next step. “I think my vision of Canada is very different from Mr. Harper’s or Mr. O’Connor’s,” she said, adding this country has always been “big-hearted and generous, even-handed, open-minded … with room for everybody. That’s not what I’m seeing portrayed in our government today, and it’s playing out the same way in our community.” Carleton-Mississippi Mills includes suburban Ottawa neighbourhoods, rural areas and small towns. Travel a few kilometres and the issues change quite suddenly. McCrimmon, who lives in Constance Bay, said she’s familiar with voters’ concerns, and has been knocking on doors, introducing herself to residents since November. “We’ve lost 29,000 good paying hightech jobs since 2007 in this riding at the same time as we’re losing farms,” McCrimmon, 53, said. “That’s crazy.”

She said the Liberal party wants to support farmers and keep them on their farms, and used local supermarkets as an example where improvements can be made Voters across the rural-urban divide have things in common, she added. “The need for employment and economic development applies to the rural and urban parts of the riding,” she said, adding that investment in high-speed Internet in every corner of the riding would allow people to run a business from home without having to move to the city. With her air force background, it’s not surprising that McCrimmon has an opinion on the federal government’s proposal to buy new F-35 stealth fighters; planes that have a price tag between $75 million and $150 million, depending on whose information is correct. “The government hasn’t proved the F35 is the right plane for the job,” McCrimmon said. “We need to do a better analysis and follow the process,” she said. “We have 14 months to decide but we’re rushing into this.”

5

Name: Gordon O’Connor Party: Conservative It was a safe riding for conservatives even before Gordon O’Connor won his first election seven years ago, but the question this time round is whether or not voters agree with his party’s plans for the local level and beyond. Liberals say the Conservatives have to make up $11 billion to meet campaign promises, and point to Ottawa job cuts as a likely target. O’Connor said with 17,000 civil servants set to retire in the next few years, money will be saved by not replacing them. “We don’t have any plans to layoff public sector workers,” he said. “We won’t do like the Liberals did under Chretien in the 1990s and fire thousands of people.” Conservatives contend they won’t cure the deficit by downloading to other levels of government, as the Liberals did 15 years ago. Their plan is to bring the $54-billion deficit, by far the largest in Canadian history, down to zero by 2015,

through an end to stimulus funding, tightening tax loop holes, growing the economy at three per cent each year, and cutting programs. There is a role for government to play, he said, which was proven when Canada’s highly regulated banking system escaped the meltdown felt in the U.S. It’s that centrist view of economics, for instance calculated stimulus spending along with $11 billion in research and development, that separates his party from the socialists on the left and libertarians on the far right. “We take a moderate position on the economy; no more tax and government than in necessary,” he said. Asked if moving into the political centre, traditionally Liberal land, is a way for Harper to lure voters away from his arch enemy, thereby destroying the Liberal brand in Canadian politics, O’Connor was hesitant. “Look, we’re filling the middle ground and right. We don’t try to create big government programs, no big bureaucratic system for things like childcare,” he said. “We send a cheque to every house.” The Carleton-Mississippi Mills Conservative incumbent has held a variety of cabinet posts, namely minister of Na-

Name: Erin Peters Party: NDP Erin Peters is actively involved in social justice programs, specifically with youth and is a dedicated community volunteer. She is a graduate of Carleton University, where she studied criminology and criminal justice with a concentration in Law. Peters was not available for an interview.

tional Defence, then minister of National Revenue, and currently minister of state (along with chief government whip). Controversy accompanied some of those moves, such as O’Connor leaving his job as defence industry lobbyist to become minister of National Defence. The appointment seemed to contradict the Conservatives’ Accountability Act. The act, though, was designed to prevent politicians becoming lobbyists, not the other way around. O’Connor faces another former member of the military in the current election, which puts much of the focus of military spending on their shoulders. The big one is proposed spending on 65 new joint strike fighters to replace the F-18 jets. Party faithful say spending on the military is sorely needed after the Liberals did little in the 1990s. O’Connor insists it’s the best deal out there, while Liberal candidate Karen McCrimmon insists an open procurement process is needed to ensure “risk management” is met. Critics add that the planes haven’t been cold weather tested and can’t be refueled from the air. Others say the technology will be replaced by unmanned drones in future.

Have a name? Submit it The Ottawa Carleton District School Board is currently building a new elementary school on Hartsmere Drive in the area south of Fernbank Road and east of Stittsville Main Street in the south end of Stittsville. It promises to be a major new facility and, more importantly, vibrant new educational community in Stittsville. The new school will be opening this coming September, with the principal, Marva Major, already appointed. One of the most important aspects in opening a new school in a community is the naming of the new school. What’s in a name, you ask? Well, a name is vitally important in that it creates an identity and culture for the school. If proper-

ly selected, it gives an indication of what the school community is all about – its beliefs, its viewpoint, its values. That is why the Ottawa Carleton District School Board, through the new principal, is seeking name suggestions from those in the community. Anyone in the community is welcome and encouraged to suggest a name for this new school. The Ottawa Carleton District School Board guidelines for naming a school suggest that a new school can be named in honour of a famous Canadian event, individual or achievement or it can be named to recognize an individual who has made an outstanding lifetime contribution to education or to the community. A school can also be named for its

geographic location which can include the overall community, a subdivision or even a street. So, if you have any suggestion for a name for this new school, you are encouraged to submit it. This can be done online at the Board’s website at www.ocdsb. ca, going to the “Our Schools – New Schools and Additions” section. The Board would like as many submissions as possible so that the very best name is selected for what is going to be a tremendous new school. However, you have to act quickly. The deadline for submission sis this Friday, April 15. But submitting online is quick and easy – so if you have an idea for an appropriate name for the new school, please submit it.

Easy protest is not worth the effort involved The Internet always buzzes with calls for protest of one sort or another. The latest, which is big on Facebook, is a call for people not to buy gasoline on April 15. Various figures are quoted as to what this will cost the oil companies, but the overriding idea is that they will be brought to their knees by this show of consumer force and drop prices at the pump. Even on Facebook there seems to be some awareness of flaws in the plan. For example, people might buy gas on the 14th, or the 16th. So someone has responded by creating a new group called Don’t Buy Gas on April 15th and 16th. That should fix it. Looking at some of the sites where this idea is being discussed, you can see intelligent discussion about what boycotts can and can’t accomplish, as well as some pointed critiques of the boycotters — such as the irony of someone who drives a

CHARLES GORDON gas guzzler engaging in a protest against the oil companies. What you don’t see are any suggestions that people work a little harder to solve what they see as a problem. “Eighty per cent of success,” Woody Allen once wrote, “is showing up.” Not showing up at a gas pump may not be all that successful. Whereas showing up, or the reverse, can make an impression on those who matter. The other day in Ottawa only 32 people showed up for a discussion of less frequent garbage pickup, a proposal that was supposed to be wildly controversial. “I’m being told that everybody opposes this,” said a city councillor, Scott Moffatt. “Where are they?” Maybe they’re at home plan-

ning where not to buy gas on April 15. That’s a protest anyone can handle. No effort is involved and it literally costs nothing.

many say they don’t like politicians, don’t respect the process, don’t think they can make any difference.

Governments know that. That’s probably the reason why Earth Hour has never made much of an impact. It shows almost no commitment to turn off your lights for an hour once a year. No sacrifice is made. It is not like standing in the rain with a placard or even writing a letter to your member of Parliament.

But how else are they going to make a difference? By turning off their lights for one hour once a year? By not buying gas on April 15?

Millions of people turned out their lights at Earth Hour on March 26 and millions didn’t. Maybe if everyone did, some governments might have noticed, but maybe not. “Sure, they turned out their lights,” someone in government might say, “but will they go to the polls?” Not everyone will, that’s for sure. The papers these days are full of interviews with young, idealistic people who say they have never voted and don’t intend to this time. Why? It’s hard to know precisely, but

The danger of easy protest is that it can make the protester feel he has done his bit, when in fact he should be doing more. If he is satisfied that he has served humanity by joining a Facebook protest page or not buying gas on April 15, then humanity isn’t going to get much more out of him.

There is something to be said for making some things easy. In Ottawa, the Blue Box program is a great success primarily because it’s an easy thing to do. If recycling was difficult, fewer of us would be doing it. But attaching too much virtue to simple actions puts off the difficult ones. The Ontario government worked like crazy to get people to use different light bulbs. Nothing wrong with that, unless it allows us to think that, without making any sacrifice at all, we have now done our thing for the environment. Making significant change is hard work, every day.

Music focus at coffee house JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com

A coffee house is an entertainment venue stemming from the hippie-oriented 1960’s. Costumes and flashy sets are not the focus. Rather, it is the music, delivered simply, often a voice accompanied by a guitar, that gets the attention. And at the coffee house held at South Carleton High School in Richmond on Thursday evening, April 7, this was the case. Whether it was the trio of Julie Sproule, Allison Leeming and Emma Eggerston providing their version of Elton John’s “Your Song” or Mercedes Kellar singing her self-written “One Step at a Time” while accompanying herself on a guitar or the rousing rendition of “Dog Days are Over” with vocals and two ukuleles thanks to the trio of Sara McKellar, Bronwyn Harkness and Marisa Yeomans, music was front and centre at this coffee house. And judging by the

positive reaction of the capacity crowd of 300 seated at tables and chairs in the school’s cafetorium, watching and listening to the entertainment coming from the stage, it was the just what the doctor ordered. And just who was delivering this musical medicine? Things got off with a bang with “Hit the Road” by the foursome of Dan Lehman, Jordan Parmalee, Gordon Richardson and Nick McEwing. It was probably the loudest song of the evening but the same group quickly slowed and quieted it down with their rendition of “Dreamland.” As the program progressed, we got to hear Tegan Mcfarlan and Kelsie Scobie sing, accompanied by Ben Linton on guitar; a trio of guitarists, all grade 12’s, singing and playing songs with “bright” references in them such as “Always look on the bright side of life,” an attitude fostered by their stressful last year of high school, even

including some whistling; and Jenna Khawas dazzling us once again with her keyboard stylings, joined in part by singer Kyle Mariott; and Emily Imbesi and Madi Shaw singing “If I die young”, with Andrew Sim accompanying them on guitar. After an intermission, the school’s newly formed Glee Club took to the stage, with a resounding a cappella medley, complete with accompanying hand and body movements. The duo of Elaine Rose and Katrina Thomson followed this, singing “You and I”, after which Elaine sang a solo, accompanying herself on guitar. Lindsay Sutherland and Neil Kenkel followed this up by slowing things down with their version of “Dream A Little Dream of Me,” the haunting melody first recorded by Ozzie Nelson and his orchestra in 1931 and over the years recorded by such singers as Frankie Laine, Doris Day, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, The Mamas and The Papas and,

lately, crooner Michael Buble. It was a quiet, slow song, just like Lindsay’s singing style. Styles changed when the duo of Justin Bonhomme and Emily Schaefer, playing the guitar, took to the stage as Justin delivered the song “Mother” in his slow, talking vocal style. Jess Blyth played and sang her untitled, self-written song and isn’t this what coffee houses are all about – providing an opportunity for creative musicians to unveil their unique musical offerings. Jess Gibson’s version of “Desperado” revived this classic song from the Eagles’ 1973 album bearing the same name. The six voice a cappella group “Vocal Rebellion” then wowed the audience with their vocal stylings, followed by more of Jenna Khawas’ keyboard magic. A toy yellow fish, a flounder apparently, appeared on the keyboard top as Alex Fleck sang “Part of your world,” that song from Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” film – hence the fish prop. Jenna then accompanied vocalist Thomas Lenz as he sang Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Till I hear you sing,” from the musical “Love Never Dies,” a sequel to the famous Phantom of the Opera. The coffee house wound up with a couple of offerings from the group of Adam Purchase, Zack Bryan, Chris Fournier and

Chris Labelle, complete with a bongo drum accompaniment to three guitars. Although these musical coffee houses have been staged for a number of years now at South Carleton, this year’s event attracted even increased interest from potential performers. As a result, more tried out for the show and those who made the cut were considered to be among the best that South Carleton has to offer in terms of musical entertainment. And those who were at the coffee house would surely agree with that as it was a little over two hours of some of the most gripping and appealing musical offerings to ever resonate in the South Carleton cafetorium.

Patrick Auger of Stittsville, an Ottawa-based Ornge critical care paramedic, has received the Tim Hynes Flight Paramedic of the Year Award from the International Association of Flight Paramedics.

Patrick Auger of Stittsville receives international award JOHN CURRY

john.curry@metroland.com

Patrick Auger of Stittsville, a critical care flight paramedic, is used to being up in the air. But he may be flying a little higher than usual these days, riding on cloud nine, as he has become the first Canadian to receive the Tim Hynes Flight Paramedic of the Year Award from the International Association of Flight Paramedics. He works for Ornge, Ontario’s provider of transport medicine services, flying out of its Ottawa base. He has been a paramedic for 20 years, with 17 of them being as a critical care flight paramedic. Patrick traces his desire to help others in crisis situations to his teenage years when he worked as a lifeguard and took St. John Ambulance, First Aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) courses and enjoyed working with people. “It was a bit of a natural transition,” he says about his eventual career path as a paramedic. He became a ground based paramedic after high school and after several years, he had an opportunity to work out of Timmins in northern Ontario, working from a fixed wing aircraft, a time that he remembers now as a “great, great experience.” He continued to take appropriate courses and eventually worked as a critical care flight paramedic for 12 years in Toronto before switching to the Ottawa area five years ago. He lived in Munster until moving to Stittsville this past January. Patrick received this prestigious international award at the Critical Care Transport Medicine Conference in Nashville, Tenn. on Tuesday, April 5. It is presented annually to honour an exceptional paramedic who has demonstrated both leadership and paramedic professionalism. Dr. Russell MacDonald, medical director with Ornge, is high in his praise of Patrick. “Pat successfully combines superior bedside skills and knowledge from almost two decades as a flight paramedic with a mastery of the principles of medical edu-

cation,” Dr. MacDonald says. This praise is echoed by Dr. Christopher Mazza, Ornge president and CEO. “Patrick exemplifies the values of compassion, collaboration and innovation that are at the core of what we do at Ornge,” says Dr. Mazza, adding that his excellence, professionalism and commitment to transport medicine are an inspiration to others. Patrick himself says that the role of critical care flight assistance is to deal with the worse cases handled by ground ambulances or smaller medical facilities. Sometimes moving such patients becomes very complicated. Patrick says that what critical care flight transport offers is “an intensive care unit in the air.” It is the job of critical care air transport to get patients to where they need to be to access their best possible treatment, he notes. He says that he and other critical care flight paramedics are able to deal with such continuous critical situations because they know that they make a difference and because of the many success stories that they have experienced over the years, such as when a youngster was run over by a lawn mower or when a group of cyclists was struck by a vehicle in Kanata, both of which have resulted in heartwarming recoveries. “What is very satisfying is that we do has an impact and we are able to provide a very sophisticated level of service,” Patrick says. Critical care flight paramedics can do a number of procedures on their own in the aircraft but at all times they have communication access to critical care transport specialists. Indeed, there are some unique challenges related to air transport of patients such as concerns for barometric pressure changes. Patrick says that he enjoys learning and is currently enrolled in the Master of Education Program in the Centre for Medical Education at the University of Dundee in Scotland. See AWARD, page 11

From page 10 “I’m a lifelong learner,” he says. But, as well, he also enjoys giving back to his professional and with the backing of Ornge, he has spoken at conferences and has shared his paramedic expertise at colleges and universities across the province. He has authored a chapter in a national paramedic textbook and has delivered paramedic and disaster management courses internationally. He has also played a leadership role at such events as the GE summit in 2010 where he was the Incident Commander of the Medical Assistance Team. He also provided leadership at an emergency evacuation of a remote community in 2005. Patrick enjoys the outdoors, particularly camping and kayaking. He is also a jet boating fan. From its Ottawa base, Ornge provides critical care helicopter transport service to Eastern Ontario and everything south of North Bay. One of Ornge’s eight critical care helicopters is stationed at the Ottawa base. Critical care flight paramedics like Patrick work 12 hour shifts and work in pairs, along with a pair of pilots. This built-in redundancy of two paramedics and two pilots on each flight is considered a best practice in the industry. Across the province, Ornge transports about 21,000 patients each year. Ornge coordinates all aspects of the province’s aero medical transport system, its critical care land transport program and authorization of air and land ambulance transfers between hospitals.

The Amberway Resident’s Community Association is becoming history. At its recent annual general meeting at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex in Stittsville, it was decided to disband the organization. This was accomplished via an affirmative vote on a motion put forward by Amberway residents Sandy White and Richard Somers. However, disbanding the organization means that a decision has to be made on the close to $2,900 which the Association has in the bank. Discussions are going to be held involving members of the Association’s executive regarding the best way to dispose of these funds. The annual general meeting was chaired by Association president Don Carter. Among

those in attendance was city of Ottawa Stittsville ward councillor Shad Qadri. The Community Association recently lost executive members as residents have moved to other areas of Stittsville. the positions of president, vice-president, treasurer and area representatives were all available at the annual general meeting. Volunteers who have achieved five years of service, either in client care, in support roles or on the Board of Directors were centred out for particular recognition, with the name of each new five year volunteer being added to the framed appreciation certificates which are prominently displayed in the Friends of Hospice Ottawa office. Among those who were honoured for reaching the five year mark as volunteers in various support roles were four Richmond residents, namely Helen Cowick, June Craig, Mavis Lewis and Donna McRae. Jennifer Cameron, daughter of Friends of Hospice Ottawa fundraising organizer Ruth Cameron of Richmond, was another five year volunteer honoured in this category. Five year volunteers were also honoured in the direct client care category (in home support, caregiver and bereavement support and transportation) as well as those who have service for five years on the Board of Directors. Beth Ada of Stittsville, who is chair of the Board of Directors, was one of those honoured for five years of service on the Board of Directors. The volunteer appreciation evening also saw the inaugural presentation of

Richmond

the Inge Kelly Distinguished Service Award, to be presented to honour volunteers who have dedicated five years of service to Friends of Hospice Ottawa in multiple roles, programs and services, in other words, a person who has gone beyond what would be normally expected of a volunteer. And the first name to go on this award will be none other than the person after whom it is named, Inge Kelly. The former Stittsville resident has been a Friends of Hospice Ottawa volunteer for seven years and had previously volunteered with Sylvia House Hospice. It was noted at the presentation ceremony that the Friends of Hospice Ottawa programs and services would not be what they are today had it not been for Ms. Kelly’s volunteer work with the organization over the years. Ms. Kelly was called a “true ambassador for community based hospice palliative care.” In receiving the award, Ms. Kelly said that she loves what she does. “Who can ask for anything more than being asked to travel with someone on their last journey,” she said with regard to her volunteer work with Friends of Hospice Ottawa. Those at this volunteer appreciation evening got to hear from city of Ottawa Stittsville ward councillor Shad Qadri who was one of the guest speakers at the event. He said that while municipal planning

and infrastructure issues are important, what makes a community is not roads and infrastructure but rather the people who live in it. He praised volunteers like those working for Friends of Hospice Ottawa for looking after those who need help in the community. He said that a municipality itself could not provide the level of care, compassion and service which volunteers working for an organization like Friends of Hospice Ottawa provide to clients. Friends of Hospice Ottawa has a wide range of volunteers, including those who provide in-home support, day hospice volunteers, fundraisers, event volunteers, bereavement support volunteers,

transportation volunteers, office help, bakers for bake sales, knitters of “Hug Me Bears” and Board of Directors volunteers. Friends of Hospice Ottawa provides hospice palliative care services in the western part of the city of Ottawa including Stittsville, Richmond, Goulbourn, Kanata and West Carleton. Besides its various services and programs, it operates two day hospices, one at the Bells Corners United Church in Bells Corners and one at St. John’s Anglican Church in Richmond. These services are provided free of charge to those who are battling a life threatening disease or who are facing an end-of-life health situation.

the Mondial Pupilles de Plomelin Soccer Tournament in Brittany, France. It will involve playing teams associated with French League Division 1 Clubs as well as against teams from Italy, Belgium and Argentina. It will be an international soccer experience at its best. The 16 Ottawa Fury players will be billeted with local families during their stay in France which will also include some sightseeing and an exhibition game in Paris before proceeding on to Brittany and the tournament. Eric Fullerton, who is in French Immersion grade seven at Goulbourn Middle School, acknowledges that living with a French family will probably help him in tuning his ear to French conservation. But this is only a by-product of what he and his teammates are going to France for and that is to play soccer. Right now the Ottawa Fury squad is ranked second among the international teams in the tournament. Eric started playing soccer in Stittsville at the age of five, playing eventually for the U9 Goulbourn Gators before moving over to the Ottawa Fury in 2007. He knew about the Ottawa Fury and their soccer program since he had an older cousin who played for them. He tried out for the U11 team, although he was only a nine year old, and made the team. “I have just loved it every since, Eric says. What he likes best about soccer is all of the intensity that surrounds the game when it is played: the fans are enthusiastic, the pace of the game is fast and everyone participating is so involved. Eric, who is a centre midfielder, says that the strength of his game is probably his passing and his ability to communicate with others. He says that to play at a high level in soccer, there has to be

communication among the players on the field. He praises his team’s coaching which stresses teamwork and which he terms is absolutely fantastic. Eric, who gave up hockey this year due to the demands of being involved in two major sports, keeps busy all year round now with soccer. He and his Ottawa Fury teammates play in a winter indoor league at the Coliseum at Lansdowne Park, with games every weekend and weekly training sessions. He and his teammates have been doing fundraising for the trip to France. One of the major fundraising events is coming up this Friday, April 15 – it’s the team’s second annual “Feast For France which is a dinner and auction evening held at the St. Anthony’s Banquet Hall in Ottawa, running from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. There will be a pasta buffet dinner, silent auction and entertainment by the Robert Farrell guitar band. Tickets are available at $25 each by visiting www.FeastForFrance.info. This trip to France with his Ottawa Fury U13 team will not be Eric’s first overseas soccer experience. Last year he attended a soccer training camp in England which came about due to his involvement with the Ottawa Fury. Eric played on the grade six soccer team at Goulbourn Middle School last year and this year, as a grade seven student, he helped coach the grade six team. As for what soccer holds in the future for Eric, he does harbour thoughts that he might someday be able to play for Canada’s national team. “I would love that, to play for my country, he says. He also admits that eventually playing professional soccer would be a pretty amazing experience as well.

But all was not bad that night for Venita Pilon. Sure, she had a skunk but she also won the booby prize. The door prize for the evening was won by Carol Brown while the 50/50 draw winners were Cleo Murray and Theresa Davidson. Bill Watson finished in first place for the evening while Edna MacKay was second. Third place went to Joan Campbell. There were 18 tables in play during the evening. Thursday, April 21 will be the last euchre of the current series at the Lions Hall being hosted by the Lions Club. Longtime Stittsville teacher dies SPECIAL TO THE NEWS A longtime beloved teacher in Stittsville passed away recently. Mrs. Daisey Jinkinson died peacefully at the Granite Ridge long term care facility in Stittsville on Friday, March 11, 2011. She was 97, just a couple of months short of her 98th birthday on April 23. Daisey (nee Whyte) was born in Ireland in 1913, coming to Canada when she was just two months old. The youngest of a family of 12, she outlived all of her siblings. She received her early education in the Huntley/ Carp area and had lived in the Stittsville area since marrying her late husband Samuel Jinkinson in 1941. They raised two sons, the late Allan and Bob, on their Fernbank Road farm. In her teaching career, Daisey taught at Montague near Smiths Falls, at Centreview in the Combermere area, in Beckwith township, at Malakoff and at Ashton before spending 21 years at Stittsville Public School, retiring in 1978.

Dr. Corrine Motluk

Daisey Jinkinson She also taught at S.S. No. 9 of Goulbourn which was traditionally referred to as the “Jinkinson School,” located on the Fernbank Road west of Stittsville. During her years of teaching at Stittsville Public School, she earned the respect of both students and staff for her work in the classroom. She was considered strict but always did it with love in her actions. When the Carleton Apartments senior residence on Carleton Cathcart Street opened in the early 1980’s, Daisey was among the first residents. She was a guest at the closing “Walk Down Mem-

Dr. Alan Franzmann

ory Lane” event at the former Stittsville Public School on Stittsville Main Street in May, 2005 and was a special guest at the official opening of the new Stittsville Public School on Granite Ridge Drive that same year. She had been honoured on her retirement from teaching in June, 1978 at a ceremony at Stittsville Public School. This marked the end of her 36 year career as a teacher, including her 21 years at Stittsville Public School beginning in 1957. Daisey Jinkinson is survived by her son Bob, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son Allan and her siblings. The funeral service was held in the chapel of the Carp Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes in Carp on Wednesday, March 16. Interment will take place in the spring at the Stittsville United Church cemetery in Stittsville. In memoriam donations to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind would be appreciated by the family.

Special constable, special smile Her smile alone is enough to disarm the most hardened of lawbreakers. But also, don’t be fooled by the smile or her size – Brittany O’Connor of Goulbourn now is a full-fledged special constable, recognized by the province and the Ottawa Police Service and working under Director of University Safety Al Burns at Carleton University in Ottawa. At the formal ceremony in the Senate Room at Carleton University on Thursday, April 7 in which she was sworn in as a special constable by Ottawa Police Service Deputy Chief Gilles Larochelle and received a framed certificate acknowledging her special constable status, her special constable badge, shoulder patch and ring, even

Director Burns acknowledged the power of Brittany’s smile. “I just can’t compete with that smile,” he said as he presented Brittany with her framed certificate. It is not easy to become a special constable which is the status of all those who work on the University Safety team at Carleton University. Director Burns admitted at the ceremony that there is a lot of effort and work that goes into becoming a member of his team. It begins with an intensive screening process, followed by provincial testing which includes aptitude and physical testing, similar to that which someone wanting to be a police officer undergoes. There is then on-the-job training before a candidate is sworn in as a special constable. Brittany was one of four being sworn in as a special con-

stable at the April 7th ceremony including Director Burns, a former Ottawa Police Service officer who has taken over as head of the University Safety program at Carleton University. Brittany, who is 20, was the only female of the four and she was a good foot shorter than the other three. But then there was that smile that everyone noticed and no one could beat. Brittany, a graduate of Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Stittsville, will be graduating from Carleton University this spring with a degree in criminology but she is hoping to continue on in her schooling, taking social work, while working part-time for University Safety. Her hope is eventually to become an Ottawa Police Service officer, working for its victims unit with her social work credentials. Brittany, who has maintained her dean’s list standing at Carleton, has policing in her heritage as two great uncles were Ottawa police officers. She has always wanted to be a police officer.

“take down” techniques as Brittany’s brother will surely attest to as she practiced her methods on him during her training period. The bandathon included three bands as well as a karaoke group, running from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. The bandathon raised $3,500 which the students have chosen to donate to the Red Cross to help the situation in Japan.

Four medals for Bren, now off to nationals

461990

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

461577

Bren Hunter of Stittsville will be competing in six black belt events at the World Karate Council’s national championships in Ottawa in May. He earned his way into the championships and the right to compete in all six events thanks to his performance at the World Karate Council’s southern Ontario Regional qualifier in London where he competed in six black belt events in the boys’ 12 and under division. Bren, who is 12, brought home gold in the Musical Weapons division and silver in the Korean Kata Forms event. What is amazing is that this was the first time that Bren competed in this Korean Kata Forms event. Bren was not finished with just a gold and a silver. He also claimed a bronze in Hardstyle Kata Forms, going up against 23 other competitors, and captured a bronze in Traditional Weapons. This bronze in Traditional Weapons was noteworthy because he came from behind to win it, being in the middle of the pack after the first round. Bren also finished in the top eight in Creative Weapons and in Point fighting under 45 kg. All of this added up to Bren’s entry into the World Karate Council national championships in Ottawa from May 20 to May

hook and latch on a wooden door to Louise Rosch’s red “Tulips in Snow. Really, there’s something for everyone. This, though, is not the complete exhibit. There are also nine framed paintings in the adjacent display cabinet including two misty landscapes by Linda Thompson, two smaller landscapes by Edna Marlow, a log farm homestead work by Lily May and an engaging painting called “End of Discussion by Heather Cloutier, featuring two squabbling house sparrows, all based on an actual happening. The display cabinet also has examples of some of the resource materials used by artists, such as a bird book and a bird magazine. There is also an example of design transfer tracing paper and a practice page for the mixing of colours. So, in these nearly two dozen paintings, you have a diversity of styles, colours and subjects – roses, tulips and other flowers; a river, a sunset, a canoe and a snowy log fence; and a lock, a butterfly and a barn. What variety and what differences – art is truly limitless. For those who do visit this Splash exhibition at the Stittsville library’s ArtSpace wall sometime this month (the display runs through to April 30), there is a comment book there in which to record your impressions of the art if you wish. Sit-on-top kayaks, paddleboard in Jock River Race SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Call for a FREE smile consult with

Three sit-on-top kayaks and even a paddleboard were among the 91 entries in this year’s Upper Jock River Canoe/Kayak Race last Saturday, April 9. This year’s race marked the 40th anniversary of the initiation of springtime racing on the Jock River. Sunny, warm weather conditions prevailed for this year’s race, with the water level considered good thanks to precipitation earlier in the week. The race down the Jock River from the Munster Road to the Jock River Park in Richmond featured 60 canoes, 30 kayaks and that one paddleboard. Among the kayaks there were three siton-top kayaks which allow the paddler to sit on top of the kayak rather than being encased in the traditional kayak. A paddleboard is a surfboard-tyke vessel on which the person stands up, using a long paddle for propulsion. Fastest time in this year’s Jock River race was recorded by Dan Mallett of Chelsea and Joanna Faloon of Ottawa in the 17 foot open class, as they zoomed down 12.6 kilometer course in one hour, two minutes and 41 seconds. The Trailhead Cup in the family class went to Steve and Lynne Hebert with Philip Pilon. Among the 11 entries in the 17

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

The Ontario Open International Jiu Jitsu Tournament in Toronto on the weekend of April 2/3 draw 1,100 participants from across North America, including Halifax, Calgary and New York State. Among those attend-

ing were several students affiliated with the Ninja Jiu Jitsu School in Stittsville. And, indeed, they did more than just participate. They brought home several medals from this tournament which allows students from various jiu jitsu styles compete against one

another. Timmy Hickey of Stittsville captured the silver medal in the junior male No Gi Light Featherweight division. Shamus Callaghan of Munster earned the silver medal in the junior male No Gi Middleweight division. A silver medal in the teen female Gi Lightweight division was earned by Julia Peterson of

Munster. Evan Peterson of Munster received the bronze medal in the Kids 1 Gi Lightweight boys’ division. Lydia Peterson of Munster was at the tournament, set to compete, but a sudden illness forced her to sit out the tournament. Chelsea Rousson of North Gower earned two bronze med-

als, one in the junior female No Gi Middleweight division and another in the junior female Gi Middlweight division. Jiu Jitsu is a Japanese martial art which initially evolved among the samurai of feudal Japan. It may make sense to re-name the Carp Road landfill site as the West Carleton Environmental Centre as is being done in the current proposal for a new landfill on the site because the site does have quite an environment. There are over 100 plant species recorded on the site, ranging from the American Ostrich Fern to White Cedar to the White Trillium to Bittersweet Nightshade to Serviceberry to White Poplar to Pondweed to Spotted Jewelweed to Red Oak. However, of all of these species, there is only species recorded on site that is considered at risk and that is the Butternut tree. Of all of the plant species recorded on site, there are no provincially or regionally rare native species among them. With regard to wildlife, there are 48 breeding season bird species recorded on site including the Northern Shoveler, a regionally rare species, and nine areasensitive species. Among the breeding season birds observed are the Green Heron, the Downy

Woodpecker, the Least Flycatcher, the White-breasted Nuthatch, the American Redstart, the Indigo Bunting and the Baltimore Oriole. There are also 26 non-breeding bird species observed on site as well as six amphibian species and seven mammal species. There are no national or provincial bird, amphibian or fauna species at risk on the site and no provincially rare amphibian or other fauna species. Among the non-breeding season birds observed are the Canada Goose, the Herring Gull, the Rock Pigeon, the Horned Lark and the Northern Cardinal. Amphibians observed include the American Toad, the Grey Treefrog, the Northern leopard Frog and the Wood Frog. Mammals observed include the Woodchuck, Muskrat, Red Fox and White-tailed Deer. This information on the existing natural environment conditions at the Carp Road landfill site formed part of the information provided by Waste Management in its latest series of open houses regarding the firm’s proposal to develop a new landfill at the site.

Easter program at Food Bank SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Easter is a time of joy and thanksgiving for many. But for some it can be a time of upset, not being able to join in with Easter’s happiness because of circumstances of need. This is where the Stittsville Food Bank has come forward and again this year has its Easter program, offering gift cards and some food items to those in need of food to help over the Easter weekend. The gift cards have a cash value and can be redeemed at local grocery stores

to buy food for Easter dinner. Any existing clients, as well as any new clients, are asked to call the Stittsville Food Bank at 613-831-0451 right away and leave a message to register for this Easter program. The gift cards will be available for pickup at the Stittsville Food Bank on Tuesday, April 19 for those who have registered. The deadline for registering for the program is this Sunday, April 17. This Easter program of the Stittsville Food Bank is made possible thanks to the generous cash donations that the Food Bank receives from members of the local community.

Juveniles do it! JOAN SAVOIE Special to the News

He may not have been behind the bench in person but his presence was certainly with the Stittsville Juvenile Team #2, not only throughout the season but especially in the Lanark Carleton Minor Hockey League playoffs. Indeed, the Stittsville Juveniles had started the season – for many of them, their final year of minor hockey – with one goal in mind and that was to win the playoff champion in memory of their loved coach and mentor, the late Rory Bradley who passed away suddenly last year. Rory had made such an impact on each of the players and he was truly missed during the season. But the team stuck together, played for Rory and accomplished what they set out to do at the beginning of the season – be playoff champions. It was an emotional moment when the league’s championship banner was

presented to the team following its successful playoff run. Rory’s wife, Carolyn Bradley, who served as the team’s manager and scorekeeper this season, held Rory’s photograph as the team posed for their championship picture. The road to this Lanark Carleton Minor Hockey League playoff championship for the Stittsville Juvenile Team #2 started on Feb. 20 when the team posted a convincing 153 win over Kemptville. Stittsville then won five of six round robin games to advance to the playoff finals. In this final series, Stittsville faced off against Arnprior/Renfrew in Arnprior. The first game of series saw the teams battle to a 2-2 tie, with Stittsville twice taking a lead but Arnprior/ Renfrew coming back to tie it up. Stittsville hosted game number two of the series and came out flying, blasting the visitors with an offensive onslaught. Stittsville had the series lead. In the third game of

the series, played at the Kanata Recreation Complex, Stittsville gave up an early goal to Arnprior/ Renfrew but came back to

win 3-1 and earn the playoff championship banner. This season coaches Jim Ringland and Dave Waterhouse continued Rory

Bradley’s philosophy that hockey builds character and is to be played with respect both for the opponents and for teammates.

And once again, this Rory Bradley formula worked. He may be gone but his wisdom and his ways are not forgotten.

Members of the Stittsville Juvenile Team #2, playoff champions in the Lanark Carleton Minor Hockey League this season, are, front row, left to right, Joel Bradley, Kevin Ringland, Bradley Clifford, Derek Gudgeon and Ryan Hamelin; second row, left to right, manager/scorekeeper Carolyn Bradley who is holding the late Rory Bradley’s photograph, Cody Scott and Chris Monteith; third row, standing, left to right, coach Dave Waterhouse, trainer Joan Savoie, Paul Savoie, Shane Beauchamp, Tanner Larose, Greg Joy, Josh Waterhouse, Liam Joy, Chase Belair and coach Jim Ringland; and, back row, left to right, Stuart Dunlop, Cory Villeneuve and Matt Gervais. Missing from the picture are player Cody Forbes and scorekeeper Sylvia Murphy.

There will be another “members only” triathlon on Saturday, April 23. Please call the legion at 613836-1632 or Norm Fortin at 613-435-0220 for more information. Thanks go to Mike Powell for donating a computer and setting it up for us at the Legion Hall. Thanks also to Alison Albert for donating the flat screen. Frank Croucher from Legion Branch 98 in Nova Scotia dropped into the Stittsville Legion recently for a friendly visit. “Yellow Dory” is holding its next karaoke evening this Saturday, April 16. Everyone is welcome to enjoy an evening of singing and dancing. A “comedian-hypnotist” will be at the Stittsville Legion Hall on June 17. More information will be forthcoming. The recent appearance of female impersonators at the Legion Hall was fantastic, with the show being colourful and full of fun. There was lots of music and dancing, with Corinne of “Yellow Dory” providing the music. Bingo is held at the Legion Hall every Wednesday starting at 6:45 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Storyteller Mary Cook in Stittsville JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com

Get ready for a real storytelling treat this Saturday. That’s when renowned storyteller and author Mary Cook will be in Stittsville as the guest speaker at the April meeting of the Goulbourn Township Historical Society. She has been delighting audiences across the Ottawa Valley and beyond over the years with her remembrances of growing up on the family farm during the depression years of the 1930’s. And she is bound to delight the audience which attends her Stittsville appearance which will happen this Saturday, April 16 starting at 1:30 p.m. at the Stittsville Legion Hall on Stittsville Main Street in Stittsville. “April Foolishness” will be the topic of her talk, with the topic alone making it sound intriguing, interesting and fun-filled. Mary Cook has been a regular contributor to newspapers and magazines across Canada and has authored ten

best selling books including “Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire,” “Another Place at the Table,” “A Bubble off Plumb” and “This Then Was Home.” She has received seven ACTRA awards for excellence in broadcast journalism as a result of her long career in radio with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, which included 25 years with CBC Ottawa. Mary believes that the connections with family and loved ones are all important and her stories highlight that no matter how hard things get, family, neighbours and friends are what make life worthwhile. This theme will no doubt run through her stories delivered in her “April Foolishness” presentation in Stittsville on Saturday, April 16. Members of the public are most welcome to attend the monthly meetings of the Goulbourn Township Historical Society such as this one coming up on April 16. There is no admission charge and there are always some refreshments and goodies served at the end of the meeting.

Miniature garbage truck as draw prize SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Stittsville businessman Phil Sweetnam has received a number of awards and honours over the years including ones honouring his community involvement and his environmental stewardship. While it comes nowhere near these, what he received on Friday, April 8 at a renewable energy workshop at Scotiabank Place certainly will rank as something unique on his trophy shelf or elsewhere in his home or office. Mr. Sweetnam was one of the draw prize winners at the workshop and received a miniature side load garbage truck to take home. It was presented to him by Wayne French of Waste Management which co-hosted the workshop with Carleton University. The idea of the workshop itself was to gather public input on specific potential projects for renewable energy research at a proposed new research facility at the West Carleton Environmental Centre which is the new name given

Christ Risen Lutheran Church

to the Carp Road landfill site by Waste Management. Carleton University and Waste Management have entered into an agreement to develop a research facility at this Carp Road site. The workshop was held to help develop specific plans for renewable energy projects that can be developed at this new facility, hopefully to benefit surrounding businesses, the municipality and the community. The landfill gas to energy plant at the Carp Road landfill site generates 6.4 megawatts of electricity using gas extracted from the landfill. However, the generators also give off heat and it is this energy that could be harnessed for some use such as heating greenhouses. Among the topics discussed was the use of waste heat from the site’s landfill gas to energy generation plant for heating a greenhouse or heating and cooling area buildings; the conversion of landfill gas to either compressed natural gas or to liquefied natural gas; and alternative power possibilities such as wind or solar generation.

Three’s the e-waste number JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com

John Curry photo

Sam Burland of Capital Junk is flanked by two computer towers and is holding a fax machine as he indicates with his fingers that three items are the limit that will be accepted from each household or business at the free e-waste drop off which the company is holding on Saturday, April 16 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Stittsville Home Furniture parking lot on Stittsville Main Street in Stittsville.

“Three” is the number to remember when thinking of this Saturday’s free e-waste drop off in Stittsville. That’s because three is the maximum number of old e-waste items that will be accepted per household or per business at this free drop off. Items accepted will include monitors, towers, keyboards, printers, fax machines and stereos. But, remember – it is all free. Capital Junk, a full service junk removal company serving the Ottawa area, is holding this free e-waste drop off in the parking lot of the Stittsville Home Furniture store at 1609 Stittsville Main Street, right across from the Stittsville post office. There will be a Capital Junk truck parked there for two hours this Saturday, April 16, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., accepting the appropriate old e-waste items. Once the drop off is over, Capital Junk will transport all of the items collected to local recycling facilities to ensure proper disposal. This fits with Capital Junk’s philosophy of supporting the environment and making every effort to recycle and/or

donate the items that is collects during its daily work. Capital Junk held its first such e-waste drop off day in Stittsville last year and was overwhelmed with items. It is hoping for a similar great response again this year, although it promises to be fully prepared for such a response or an even greater response. But Capital Junk wants to make sure that people respect the limit of three items per household or business. In this way, as many people as possible will be able to be accommodated. Saturday, April 16, the day of the drop off, is happening right in the shadow of the annual Earth Day which takes place on

Friday, April 22 this year. This is the most celebrate environmental event worldwide, with over one billion people in over 170 countries taking part in events and projects to address local environmental issues. By taking part in this free e-waste drop off in Stittsville, you will be doing your part to help out Mother Earth in the true spirit of Earth Day. Capital Junk focuses on eco friendly removal in its everyday work which includes hauling away almost any unwanted item for both residential and commercial customers. Capital Junk can be contacted at 613-8250707 or via the internet at www. CapitalJunk.ca.
