JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Metin Akgun is stepping down as president of the Stittsville Village Association (SVA). He made it clear at the SVA’s executive meeting on Thursday, Sept. 9 that he would not be standing for reelection at this November’s annual general meeting. A ten year veteran of the SVA executive, Mr. Akgun even doubted how much involvement he would continue to have as the SVA immediate past president. “We’ll see how much I can be a part of it,” he said about his SVA involvement once he has stepped down as president. He said that he enjoys his SVA activity but lamented that there comes a time to step aside. He also expressed a desire to spend more time around home. He explained that when he retired from his work life, he knew it was a logical time to stop and this now applies to his SVA involvement. Mr. Akgun’s involvement with community organizations goes back to the late 1980’s when the Wyldewood Homeowners’ Association was formed and he became involved. The Wyldewood organization ceased but the SVA came along and Mr. Akgun joined up. He is not the only longtime SVA executive member who is stepping aside. Jean Kerr, who has been the SVA’s treasurer since its formation ten years ago, is not continuing in the role. Now 86, she recently moved from her home into an apartment in Stittsville and feels that now is the time to cease her active involvement in the SVA. “We definitely need a treasurer,” president Akgun commented, noting that it is an essential position and should be someone who is easily accessible. There are also question marks about the continued involvement of SVA directors Christine Hartig, David Fairbrother and Ken LaRue, all because of other commitments at this time. But there are also others who have indicated that they will be continuing on with the organization. Vice-president Doug Sutherland, who still has one year to go on her term, is staying involvement. As to whether he would move up to the president’s role, he readily admitted that he could not approach making the type of commitment to the position that Mr. Akgun has made in the role. However, he said that there is still two months to go before the annual general meeting and he would think about moving up to president. Longtime SVA director David Jenkins, who handles planning issues, is staying on the executive for another year. However, this would be his last year on the executive and he is looking for someone who could work with him during the coming year and then take over the planning portfolio when he leaves. President Akgun paid tribute to the important work on planning issues which Mr. Jenkins has done over the years with the SVA, making it a credible organiza-

SVA president stepping down

Wesselingh, Phil Sweetnam, Theresa Qadri and Katrina Harder will all be continuing on the SVA executive. Mr. Akgun hopes to have more clarification about the plans of all of the SVA executive members in time for the SVA executive’s October meeting. “There are a few question marks as far as I am concerned which we will have to clarify,” he said.
