Woodcarvers from all across Canada, 12 in total, gathered at Woodeden Camp in London, ON, April 30th to May 3rd, to create a range of different carvings to help beautify the camp. “They’re donating their time and talents, trying to raise awareness for Woodeden Camp and Easter Seals”, said Howard Botten, site manager for Woodeden Camp. “They’re trying to bring some attention to themselves as artists and carvers, trying to bring some attention to the camp and also trying to bring some attention to Easter Seals and what we do to help children with physical disabilities. They’re here on their own time and their own dollar and they’re just happy to help.” Among the carvers were Ryan Cook and Paul and Jacob Frenette from HGTV’s show Carver Kings. Joerg Jung of Vancouver and local carver, Mike Winia, will be representing Canada at the world carving championships in Germany this year and were also part of the event. Botten said this is the first year they’ve held the event. “Maybe (next year) we can get something going bigger and better even”, he said. The purpose of the woodcarving event is to help raise money for Easter Seals. Easter Seals is an organization that helps children with physical disabilities and their families to get wheelchairs, lifts for the home, ramps and the opportunity to go to camp. Botten said they have about 350 children that go to Woodeden Camp every year and they can enjoy activities such as archery, a high-ropes course, swimming, rock climbing and arts and crafts.
