Art & Design An award-winning artist, she uses brushes and colorful tools to create her masterpieces which successfully draw in her viewers who would soon find themselves fixated and mesmerized by her timeless visuals.
Other sources of her inspiration are drawn from music and movement where she is able to visually capture the grace and beauty of dance while simultaneously being moved by the rhythms and melodies of music. A well accomplished painter, Snyder’s works are currently hanging in collections and galleries - in addition to being exhibited all over the United States. To date, the National Art Museum of Sport honors her by choosing her painting of a boxer “Before the Bell” for inclusion in its 2010 - 2011 collection.
Considering her style to be Post Impressionist, her passion for painting is inspired by everyday people situated in their environment – as well as subtle beauties of women and the intensity of athletes.

My muse is woman. She is everywhere and multifaceted. She is beauty, history and the future. As child, artist, athlete, teacher, or seductress I find her infinitely inspiring. Wherever I meet her, my goal is to bring her into the studio for a painting session. Much like poetry captures a few details to bring to mind a scene, what I paint is composed of swift impressions of colors and forms. Instead of words, I use the brush to capture the essential fragments and facets of an intimate communication between the viewer and the subject. There is a timelessness that I bring to my work that allows me to easily transform the images of everyday life into a new reality. Painting is my path to a world where stories begin to unfold through marks made on the canvas. My journey as a painter began at the Glasgow School of Art, Scotland’s foremost art academy, an extraordinary and inspiring artistic environment. After a few years, I spread my wings and traveled throughout Europe, finally settling in the Balearic Islands located off the coast of Spain. I arrived in the U.S. in 1984 and spent the next decade working in several artistic fields before turning to fine art.

Exclusive Interview w/ Julie Snyder Can you tell us something about yourself and when was the first time that you realized that you are an artist? In this lifetime? I was maybe 3 or 4 years old, doing the things that little kids do – playing with colored pencils. I understood how to mix primary colors and produce flesh tones. It wasn’t so much an “ah ha” moment, but just a comfortable recognition, “Oh, I’m an artist - that’s right.” It was a feeling as familiar as an old pair of sneakers. As the daughter of an artist and a writer, my family took my vocation for granted. I was introduced even at this tender age as Julie - the artist.
Could you tell us some more about your paintings and what inspires you to continually paint? People are my subject matter. I love to paint figures. I am intrigued by and drawn to people with an attitude, as if they bring something to the room. This attitude can be graceful, passionate, soulful - and it can be intense.
I am equally intrigued by ballet dancers as I am with fighters. They have beautifully toned and sculpted physiques, they are disciplined and they both share a devotion and concentration that soars above the ordinary.
Can you explain to us how your creative process works when you begin to paint? It begins with an idea - what I want to say about my subject in a visual language. It could be about how the light falls across the model’s cheek, or about the color of her kimono, or about a fighter’s glare. I take that idea and weave it through the composition, the colors and even the brush work. I also eliminate anything that doesn’t support this idea. The painting is a distillation of the idea. It makes a powerful statement about the subject, transforming a mundane pose into a piece of art. Continuation On The Next Page >

There are several of course. Occasionally I stumbled upon something in my work quite unexpected, and surprised myself. I like to work with a little serendipity in my life - I like surprises. For this reason I find myself painting over old canvases or I stain my canvases with lots of left over paint just to mix it up a little. Total prediction is a little boring. Some of the pieces that stand out for me were those where I tried to do something and achieved a result beyond my expectation.
The accomplishments that you are most proud of I was very pleased to have my work accepted into a museum. The National Art Museum of Sport selected my painting “Before the Bell” out of many international submissions for their “Commitment to Excellence in Art and Sport” 2010-2011 show in Indiana. Outside of painting, what are your other interests? Travel is a passion of mine. My idea of vacation doesn’t include beach resorts or cocktails with tiny umbrellas. My ideal trip includes waking up in a country where I have never visited, listen to people whose language I don’t understand, eat food I never tasted before and watch the world pass by. I make friends easily and really enjoy meeting new people. I loved exploring Spain and Morocco.
Are there any issues or causes that you feel strongly about? Are you a part of any groups or organizations or do you support any of these? Many of course, we live on many dynamics; surviving as families, societies and nations as well as part of the planet and the whole ecosystem. I feel strongly about ethics and serving others. If everyone volunteered some of their lives to the greater good, paying it forward they would improve the environment and their own esteem.
Right now, I can’t abandon our kids to go off and save the word, but I can make meaningful differences. I was a Girl Scout leader for a decade so I could help my kids learn competence. Until I have the resources to spend time making a big difference, I donate to social betterment groups - educational, antidrug, human rights. And on the home front I buy Girl Scout cookies, knowing that my dollars and participation help a young girl become competent.
If you were on a platform overlooking millions of people who has their eyes and ears on you, what would you want to tell them? I’d tell them, Hello, I want you to know that you are much, much more capable of achieving greatness that you permit yourself to believe. Remember to think BIG. Continuation On The Next Page >

Enjoy your journey in the arts. It will take you places you never knew. Take advantage of new media and the access provided by social networks to professional artists. You can have meaningful dialogs with successful artists whose work you admire. You can seek out and find classes and instruction with many professionals. Art schools are not the only way to get the tuition you need, and in fact may becoming less relevant with their set curricula. However, some things don’t change, like hard work being a key to success. What advice would you give to an artist who is just starting out?

Julie Snyder and her Muse Julie Snyder is a denizen of the studio. Most of her work is done from life, meaning that the model and artist share the same studio space. The work is developed over several sittings. For her, the act of painting is like stepping into another universe where anything is possible. Although direct observation of the model is key to making a successful painting, Julie Snyder also allows the painting to develop a life of its own. Often an image or pattern begins to emerge in the background where Snyder will begin an interplay with imagination and reality. “It’s that dynamic play of opposites that add energy to painting shadow and light, warm and cool colors, lost and found edges the literal and imaginative passages.” Her patrons frequently search her site for new works to add to their collections which they cherish. They often write to her describing how these paintings continue to delight and enrich their homes. That is music to the artist’s ears. Julie’s artistic career has spanned both sides of the Atlantic and included several years of residence in Southern Spain. She now lives in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. “I paint the figure, finding my subjects in many walks of life and I bring them into the studio to model. I love to recreate an impressionistic environment on the canvas that suggests a story.”

Her work hangs in collections and galleries across the country. The National Art Museum of Sport honored her, including her painting of a boxer “Before the bell” in its 2010 -2011 collection. This summer Addison Art Gallery, Cape Cod is showing “Inspired Synergies” in June 2011, a collection of work by 13 women artists. Twelve painters and one sculptor convened who converged on a rural village in France to capture the ephemeral quality of light and fertile abundance of nature’s timeless rhythms. Ms. Snyder led this group of established and emerging artists from the East and West coasts of the U.S. and Scotland, to work together in the sundrenched fields and stonewalled villages of rural France. Music Music Similarly with romance, this tune seems to have some complications attached to it; giving it more character and depth. To add to that, the androgyny and the delivery of the lyrics courtesy of Jihae’s distinctly deadpan voice make this song work perfectly.
The striking beats that accompany the voice in ‘My Love’ has this rare rapture that allows you to drift off to space and take you to a totally different world - a place only meant for you and your lover. The huskiness of Jihae’s voice exudes such sensuality that you cannot help but be seduced to the sound that shadows a roguish intent. With an image and look that fits her music to the tee – Jihae’s voice and evocative sound is full of mystery and wonderment, and is so tempting that you simply have to succumb to it.

The melodic feel of ‘My Love’ is a soulful rhythm with a slight upbeat tone that suggests a touch of giddiness which is immediately followed by a haunting sound that seems to contradict the flighty tune that followed it.

Tell us something about yourself I was born in outskirts of Seoul. Korea. Growing up I moved around so much I had attended 10 different schools in 3 languages by the time I was in 9th grade at age 13. I hated moving and leaving friends, to make new ones so often. In retrospect, my encounters with various cultures were invaluable eye opening experiences that my parents gave me. I consider NY my home and feel blessed to be able to do what I love.
What inspires you to continually make music? My passion for writing and expression keeps me going.
What is the inspiration behind the song “My Love?” What is it about and what does it mean? My Love was inspired by Niki De Saint Phalle’s work of drawings and prose from the 60’s. Love is an overused and abused word with so many varying meanings in English. The Greeks figured this out and have 3 different words to describe the different types of love. This song is about eros, a romantic love. It’s about a kind of love that doesn’t happen necessarily each time you fall in love, depending on the type of lover you are... the kind of love one can fall into that makes you want to give everything you’ve got. I don’t choose particular themes in advance. Inspiration can come from any ordinary or extraordinary events or moments. A drop of a leaf, a coffee shop conversation, or watching a volcano erupt. Out of the various topics I write about the usual theme tends to be about love in varying degrees and context. Sans love, good love, bad love, love for humanity, for nature etc.
Could you briefly describe your music-making process? I write mostly on guitar and rarely on keys. Usually a riff, a melody, or a few words come to mind and I build from there. There are some magic moments when all the elements to the song come at one time. I take it to my producer, Jean-Luc Sinclair in the studio where we play and experiment with layers.
How has your music evolved since you first began playing?

What has been your biggest challenge as an artist/musician? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how? Biggest challenge I would say is touring due to lack of funds. What’s your ultimate direction for your music? I would not want to limit myself to one ultimate direction.
What is your greatest accomplishment, thus far – as an artist/musician? A short film score and music for trailer of ‘One Dream Rush’,a collective short of 42 shorts by 42 directors including David Lynch, Larry Clark, Jonas Mekas, Kenneth Anger, Mike Figgis etc. The film went to Cannes Film Festival and got acquired by National Chinese Film Museum.
What experience or emotion do you want your audience to take from your music as a whole? Whatever unique emotion or experience that is aroused within each individual.
If you could change anything in the world of music today, what would it be? I would switch the focus on the boring perpetual fad of being a celebrity rock star to the importance of creating without rules and guidelines.
I would also make a support system within the industry to incubate new talents to grow their individual sounds. The Brits do it well with Radio 1, NME, Camden Crawl. Press, radio and venues collectively support new artists and give them opportunities to be heard.
In your opinion, what do you think is your greatest contribution to the world of music? I’ve never thought I would encounter such a question until my 18th album but now that I’m being asked… In the context of the current drought… the music business is still based on making stock turning over hits to sell as much as possible to the mass market. I can express freely without rules or the worry of marketability. I don’t have an A&R person telling me how to express myself and change arrangements of my songs for the underlining reason of ‘selling’. My music is free of hit factory interferences. “I often walk in fashion shows for charity. I feel strongly about a lot of issues but I tend to get most verbal about education. I really feel that in the United States, education should be prioritized for much more than it is now. Graduation rates are abysmal where I live in Denver, Colorado, and colleges are unaffordable for a lot of people. It would help everyone if we valued education enough to invest in it the way it should be.”

Tell us something about yourself I’m pretty nerdy. I’m a foodie, so I love cooking and eating. I love to read and write, and when I get some spare time I like to practice Japanese. Unfortunately, I don’t use it much, so I’m pretty rusty!
What are you still learning at this point in your life? Everything! There’s so much to learn about who I am, what I want and how to do what I do better. Though tarot card reading has been a hobby of mine for years, recently I’ve been learning more about their history and in depth meanings of each card.
What ambition have you not yet achieved? I’m young, so there’s a lot I haven’t achieved yet. I’d like to launch a successful fashion magazine and see how far modeling can take me as well as live abroad within the next five years.
At this point in your life, what are you most proud of? I’m proud of my success in modeling and really, life. I’ve faced a lot of obstacles in the last two years, but I’m resilient and kept going. I’m very glad because my hard work is paying off, for the first time in a long time I can say I’m truly happy. In terms of modeling, I’m a little shorter than industry standard, so it’s been very gratifying to be booked more and more lately. It’s a tough industry, so I’m happy to be making as much progress as I am!

How do you want to inspire other people given your current status in life? I want to inspire people to go after their passions in life. It isn’t always easy, but it’s worth it. I want to show people that even when things are completely out of your control and everything is going wrong, that there is something to be learned from it and that if you just stick it out, things turn around. Find the opportunity in misfortune, I suppose. If things happen for a reason, take that and use it, make it what you want it to be.
What are your thoughts when it comes to describing a model with substance? I think in order for a model to have good charisma on camera, it’s important that they have a lot of vitality and passion for what they do. There needs to be more than just the desire to be famous and glamorous, you have to be able to express the things that you think but don’t say. I’m inspired by people who are successful at what they love to do; people who break the status quo. A lot of my friends inspire me every day. When I see them accomplishing their goals and finding their happiness, it makes me more motivated to do the same.

Who are the people that inspire you and why?

Have you participated in any charity/ volunteer work and are you a part of any organization? Are there any issues that you feel strongly about? I often walk in fashion shows for charity. I feel strongly about a lot of issues but I tend to get most verbal about education. I really feel that in the United States, education should be prioritized for much more than it is now. Graduation rates are abysmal where I live in Denver, Colorado, and colleges are unaffordable for a lot of people. It would help everyone if we valued education enough to invest in it the way it should be.
If you could change the world at this very moment -- what would you change? I’d change the focus from war to education and healthcare. So much money is spent on war but somehow there’s never enough money for people to have good schools or healthcare. It seems to me like rather than spend all of the money on something that is so destructive and wasteful; that the same amount could be spent on something productive and useful for everyone. There’s no reason why kids shouldn’t be able to attend quality schools and be able to see doctors and have medicine when they need it. Continuation On The Next Page >

What has been your most memorable assignment to date and why? My first magazine shoot was easily one of my favorites. It was for a local magazine called 303, and I was so excited I couldn’t sleep the night before. The house we shot in was unbelievably luxe and the clothes I got to wear gave me sticker shock. Everyone who was there was so passionate about what they did and so wonderful to be around. Seeing myself in print for the first time was an incredible experience!
What do you think is the most effective way that you have marketed yourself? Networking! I take every opportunity I can to meet other people in the industry. I’m a very outgoing person, so that comes easily to me. Making personal connections with people makes a huge difference. If you could work with anybody in the fashion industry today - who would, you want to work with in a heartbeat? Christian Lacroix. His couture creations were absolutely amazing.
If you are not a model, what would you be? That’s a difficult question because a lot of the things that I do are related to modeling. All of my career plans outside of modeling are things that I’m not sure I’d be able to accomplish without having the experiences and connections I had from modeling. I know what I’ll be doing after I’m done modeling, but I really don’t know what I’d be doing instead of modeling.

What are the three most important things in your life? I want long term success so that I can spend more time enjoying my friends and family. Family, friends, work and hobbies are very important to me.
How do you think people perceive you to be and how to do want to be perceived? I think people perceive me to be confident, spunky, and ambitious. I like to have a lot of fun, but I’m also very serious when I’m focused on work, so that duality can be a little confusing to people who are just getting to know me. I want to be perceived as someone who is confident, fun, and gets a lot of worthwhile stuff accomplished. CONCEPT Silk Road is an elaborate multi-cultural vision where Mediterranean Spice & Trade Market encounters the plush & intimate opulence of the Merchant Route. Silk Road’s seductive bar invites one to lounge in its sculptural fiberglass seating that flows to the outside space. The seating separates the relaxed yet elegant bistro style seating, intended to create the atmosphere of a Merchant Meeting House, from the private booths of the intimate dining room. During the day, natural light will illuminate the vibrant & vivid colors of the room; while at night, subtle ambient light encourages an intimate yet vivacious ambiance. Silk Road invites guests to find themselves immerged in a seductive experience that invites to socialize freely in its sensuous surroundings from breakfast to diner. There is a curvy wall in 3 different layers that creates a dynamic effect from day to night. Before anyone walks into the Vdara restaurant one can immediately sense the rich history of the Silk Road reenvisioned today. Delicate reflective patterns remind one of Asian tapestries viewed as never before. Walking into the ocular entrance fiberglass swags turn into furniture like a spice traders tent set up for a four star meal. The colors are white, pink and mirrored gold in glass, metal, light wood ceilings and fiberglass for an understated opulence. The exterior high contrast pattern on gold mirror with matching pink windows and an amorphous opening signal to the dinner that something incredible is ahead. Upon passing through there is fiberglass blobject furniture designed by Karim over a reflective gold glass floor. To the other side is an innovative bar set below a dimensional representation of the Silk Road itself. The hostess will set you in one of several dinning experiences, from intimate and cradling custom fiberglass banquettes to soft tables that seem to glow with a warm orange light, reflecting the sand dune layered wall and the southern Nevada sunsets.
