owen Island sits in Howe Sound at the entrance to the Georgia Straight, just three nautical miles from West Vancouver. We’ve been welcoming visitors since the Squamish First Nations people summered here, and earned the moniker ‘the people’s playground’ in the early 1890s, when mainlanders began to flock to Bowen for fun and frolic on ‘The Happy Isle’. Take a hike, play a round of golf, kayak, or just savour the quiet. Enjoy our isle for the day, stay for a rejuvenating rest or revel in a romantic weekend.

W

Brochures advertised a well-planned 900 acre park with several picnic grounds, covered tables, a dance pavilion, fine hotel dining, refreshment parlours, a general store, and 200 rental cottages. Sadly only a handful of those original cottages remain—local volunteers have been working with Metro Vancouver Regional Parks to preserve and protect them.

illiam and Florence Davies homesteaded 33 acres on the western shore of Snug Cove in 1887 and planted an orchard, established Davies General Store, and would often row to Vancouver’s city market to sell their fruit, deer, and grouse. As Bowen’s popularity grew, Davies created the first campground in The Orchard, which would eventually become summer cottage rentals. Today, Davies Orchard still hosts some of the original fruit trees and nurtures new saplings rescued from several original orchard tree cuttings which have been grafted to root stock to produce a renewed and thriving orchard.

I

n 1920, The Union Steamship Company bought the Cates' property to create a resort lifestyle destination for daytrip excursions, family camping, company picnics, and Big Band 'booze cruises'—constructing a causeway to connect Snug Cove with the perfectly manicured bowling greens and tennis courts of the elegant new Mannion Bay Hotel. Marketed to mainlanders, it was a perfect circle of fun, frolic, escape, and entertainment which fed the local economy so well, it’s rumoured that during the “Dirty Thirties”, those who couldn’t indulge still flocked to Bowen Island—it was the only community with a thriving economy and work despite the depression’s dismal downturn. Today, if you’re keen to relive a little piece of the past, come stay in the renovated cottages and just enjoy. For bookings in the marina and cottages: ussc.ca

F

ew small communities have the kind of access to their community’s history that we have—our dedicated group of staff and volunteers at Museum & Archives will celebrate 50 years of collecting and archiving artifacts in 2017. All you history buffs must check out both bowenheritage.org and bowenislandmuseum.ca... the stories and images simply transport you back to days gone by.

T

he Bowen Island Marina was the resort’s ‘Gateway to Bowen Island’. Larger ships like the Lady Alexandra could bring up to 1,400 of visitors a day to our ‘Happy Isle”. The original pathway to the restaurant remains today just past the Rice Bowl take-out, the Gift Shop, the Pie Shop, and to the left of the Kayak rental shop. The famous Dance Hall was located beside the restaurant.

C

olourful Captain Cates launched the island resort in 1900, catering to the picnic excursion crowd and guests at the Terminal Hotel (rates $14 per week, $2.50 per day), with the motto, “Home Comfort”.

EVERGREEN HALL GUEST HOUSE B&B

walk from the ferry, stroll to the cove, or take in the beach, we’re close to everything

Evergreen Hall Guest House B&B, originally the Union Steamship Dance Hall, is a magical old building that has been transformed into a B&B, offering a private, self-contained upstairs suite and two B&B rooms downstairs with a shared bath. And for folks wanting a quiet intimate space for a small business retreat, the bright main floor meeting room is perfect—flow outdoors to the large deck in the summer or cozy down in the winter with the wood burning fireplace. (You can almost hear them jivin' from the ol' days.) The self-contained Union SteamShip Cottages near the marina have been carefully preserved to maintain their original character. For all the comforts of home with four bedrooms and a Deep Bay view, check-out Snug Point Cottage. For a view from the other side of Deep Bay, Simply Safari offers a hot-tub and decor with an African flavour.

Enjoy the water view from the private spacious upstairs suite, or relax in one of the downstairs B&B rooms. The Hall is available for small meetings along with elegant dining space & large kitchen on request.

I

n the time it takes many inner dwellers to reach the city, I’m in a tiny island community, surrounded by thick forest and locals living an idyllic, rustic lifestyle.

While the island has its tourist attractions (a golf course, kayaking, nice cafes and a fantastic chocolate shop), it retains a village-like feel. Indeed, many Vancouverites seem to be unaware of its existence, or at least have never made the trip out to visit. This seems to suit the locals just fine, who comfortably live out a Northern Exposure-style existence on the edge of a bustling metropolis. Still, the island looks like one of the most liveable parts of the world’s most liveable city.” Craig Platt, The Sydney Morning Herald

weddings retreats special occasions G

raciously hosting special days and memorable experiences are as intrinsic to Bowen Island as the visual feast and idyllic setting The Rock has to share. We’ve been creating celebrations for mainlanders for decades— delivering unforgettable events for corporate retreats, family reunions, and weddings, much to the delight of all those who attend. It’s all part of our island charm. Imagine celebrating your vows in a magical two-acre pastoral setting like Alderwood Farm with landscaped gardens, delightful animals, a charming chapel above the barn, and memorable food. It's truly an enchanting place to make your memories. There's also a cozy little cottage for two. Whether it’s the intimate details of a perfectly planned Alderwood Farm Wedding, a Yoga Retreat or the unobtrusive service for a corporate gathering at The Lodge at the Old Dorm, the 20-minute cruise over sets the stage for this enchanting journey–everyone feels like they’re a million miles away.
