Talk of the Town Good evening, and welcome to Volair Park for this Hallmark Security League, First Division contest against Stockport Town. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. A week ago today we hosted high flying Alsager Town to Volair Park and fought out a second consecutive 2-2 home draw and some of the circumstances were similar to the previous home game against AFC Blackpool! The early stages of the contest saw little to trouble either stopper before Dom Whelan who had an excellent game on the right of the home defence broke into the box and was felled by the visiting stopper the resultant spot kick was converted by Ste Rigby his fourth goal in the last five games and after a quality save from Adam Fairchild in the home goal St Helens went into the break a goal to the good. Alsager came out of the dressing room with renewed vigour probably after being on the end of a stern half time talking to and controlled the next quarter of the contest dominating possession and were value for their leveller on 72 minutes a close range finish from a needlessly conceded corner. Both teams created chances in the final quarter of the contest but as the game reached the 90th minute it looked like the spoils were going to be shared, the visitors had other ideas as they pushed forward looking to take all three points in their promotion chase and Dave MacPherson was able to fire home for what looked like the winning goal. The hosts though they may have been down they were not out and for the second consecutive home contest they pushed forwarded in added on time looking to get something from the game and were worthy of their return when it came. Liam Dodd had been sent forward from his usual duties at the back and looked every inch a striker as he sprinted past a defender, latched on to a through ball and lofted it over the advancing goalkeeper and into the net to earn St Helens a share of the spoils. Saturday saw Town again frustrated by the weather as the scheduled contest up in Barrow at Holker Old Boys was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch and this game will now take place on Tuesday 25th April with an 8pm kick off. So attention now turns to this evening contest against one of the form teams in the division in the shape of Stockport Town. The Lions have had an interesting season for a number of reasons, they failed to live up to expectations early this term after finishing in the play offs last year and then a change of manger in the early part of this year seems to have kick started their season with Dave Wild having replaced Calum Sykes and they come into the contest this evening on a run of none matches unbeaten. Alan took the opportunity to have a look at Stockport in their contest at AFC Blackpool on Saturday with us being inactive and hopefully he has come up with a gameplan to earn us all three points this evening! Let’s get behind Town this evening and hopefully cheer them on to victory! Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today Founded in February 2014 and based at Stockport Sports Village, the club began with ambitious aims to begin life in the football league at Step 6. Most teams begin life at Step 7. 24 months ago however, Stockport Town suffered a setback in their plans after being unsuccessful in applying for the league. After positive meetings, the FA told Stockport Town they were not convinced that the club met the required standards for a new club attempting to join the North West Counties. Despite this, the club board were convinced that a year of development would only benefit Stockport’s application chances. And so on the 29th April 2015, 3 of the club’s representatives travelled down to Wembley to meet with the Leagues’ Committee. They highlighted how the club had been successfully run over the past year, with encouraging results against some high profile clubs from the region. Thursday 14th May 2015 will always be a historic day for Stockport Town Football Club, with news reaching the team late that evening the club’s place in the league for the 2015/16 season was confirmed. In 2015/16 the Lions finished 4th in the North West Counties League Division One. Despite beating eventual league winners Hanley Town home and away among some other impressive results, Town came up short in the Playoff semi-final, losing 2-0 against Bacup Borough. This term has been tougher for the Lions as they had an indifferent start to the season and were rocked by the resignation of manager Calum Sykes in mid-December before taking over at New Mills. Dave Wild took over in the new year and having recruited almost a full squad of players has steered the Lions back into form as they currently sit at the top of the form table and are unbeaten in their last nine games.

Chairman’s Notes Good evening and a very warm welcome to Volair Park for this Hallmark Security League First Division encounter with Stockport Town. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have had a safe journey and along with our own support are treated to an entertaining encounter. Many thanks to this evening’s match sponsors Toast Coffee House and Café, St Helens and our match ball sponsors television sports broadcaster Stuart Pyke - your continued support is greatly appreciated. As I have previously mentioned our 2017-18 sponsorship packages are now available on the club’s website www.sthelenstownafc.com - there’s lots on offer from £50 upwards. In particular we’re looking for a first team home and away shirt sponsor for the new campaign. Thursday night football at Cables is not to be missed based upon our last two encounters - both 2-2 draws against AFC Blackpool and Alsager Town. Both games have seen exciting climaxes with late, late goals and an excellent atmosphere. If you want to relive the video highlights of the Alsager game they are available via the club’s website. We are also delighted to welcome back David Brindle who is broadcasting tonight live via B Live Sports Radio. Congratulations to John McLaughlan and the U21s who made it through to the final of the Cheshire FA U21s League Challenge Cup where they will meet league leaders Irlam U21s. The final will take pace on Thursday 4th May at Chester FC. The U21s are still in with a good shout of the Premier Division league title but will need to win all remaining four games away at Southport, West Kirby, Irlam and Abbey Hey. Sadly our U18s lost out 3-2 to Marine U18s in the semi-final of the Liverpool County FA Sunday Youth Cup but could still pick up some silverware as this Sunday (19th March, 3pm at Ruskin Drive) they host Chester FC Colts in the semi-final of the First Division West Cup. The winners will take on either Witton Albion or Southport U18s who fight out the other semi-final. Sunday morning (11am) sees our U21s in action as they travel to Edge Hill University to take on Southport U21s.

Our Thursday evening’s continue next week when Chadderton are the visitors to Volair Park. Last Saturday’s postponed trip to Holker Old Boys (Barrow) has now been rescheduled to Tuesday 25th April, 8pm the 30th anniversary of our 1987 FA Vase Wembley win over Warrington Town. Finally we’ve added a new item of club merchandise with a bob/ski hat which are on sale for £6 at tonight’s game. John McKiernan Chairman, St Helens Town AFC 07713 339 682

Ruskin Drive News More disappointment as the wait continues for Town's return to St Helens. Club officials met with the Council last Friday (3rd February) and it has now been confirmed that the work required to meet the FA Ground Grading will not be completed until mid-May 2017. While the ground is currently being used by the club’s U18s, U21s and Sunday teams the prolonged delays to the completion of the new dressing room facilities and a problem with the height of the pitch perimeter fence have left the club frustrated that the first team will have an extended wait to make a return home. The delay will mean a number of issues for Town including the need to secure alternative playing facilities for next season to ensure they do not fall foul of the FA and NWCFL ground requirements. As the Ruskin Drive Sports ground will not be in a position to be inspected by the 31st March deadline the club needs to have a ground sharing agreement in place at a suitable alternative ground to maintain their membership of the league and guarantee entry to FA competitions. Club Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘The news is very disappointing and a real blow to our plans. We’ve relied on the good will and support of a number of clubs over the past six years and are indebted to those clubs in ensuring the survival of the club – their assistance should not be underestimated.’

He added, ‘If we accept that the new ground will be ready in May the reality is that we will never need to utilise any ground sharing agreement but it still has to be in place or we could be in serious trouble.’ The club will also lose out on a lucrative fixture as part of the NWCFL Easter weekend Ground Hop. Town were due to host promotion chasing City of Liverpool at Ruskin Drive as the second of three Ground Hop fixtures in the area on Easter Sunday which would have seen up to 300 ‘hoppers’ part of a likely four-figure crowd. Mr McKiernan added, ‘We had expected to be on the new ground some time earlier this season but delays have shifted from weeks to months. The loss of the Ground Hop fixture is both hugely disappointing and financially disastrous, losing the club thousands of pounds. ‘Given our opposition the City of Liverpool FC, who are very well supported, hundreds of ground hoppers and a lot of local interest this was guaranteed to be bumper crowd and an ideal way to showcase the club and the new Ruskin Drive Sports Ground facility. ‘Unfortunately, we had no other option but to inform the league that we would not be able to participate in the Ground Hop programme.’

FA Vase St. Helens Town: FA Vase Winners - 1987

PART 1 – The first three rounds The FA Vase came into being in 1975 as the replacement for the FA Amateur Cup. St. Helens Town had, before 1986, entered the FA Trophy, but that competition had become dominated by the giants of the non-league game and the chances of Town making progress – and money – in the Trophy were slim. In the Summer of 1986, the club elected to enter the FA Vase for the first time, little knowing that they would go on to lift the prize at Wembley on 25th April 1987. They entered the competition at the Extra-Preliminary Round and were drawn against Colne Dynamoes, a club in the division below Town in the North West Counties League. However, Dynamoes were in a false position, as they had a multi-millionaire backer who had the ambition of Football League status for his club. Indeed, they went on to win the FA Vase themselves the following season and a number of rapid promotions led the club to the heady heights of Northern Premier League Champions in 1990. They won the title by a massive 26 points over Gateshead, but failed in their attempt to get promoted to the Conference, Gateshead being elevated in their stead and the Dynamoes ceased to exist as a club, being replaced some years later by the present Colne FC. However, I digress. On 6th September 1986, Town took on Colne Dynamoes in the FA Vase and it turned out to be quite a day! St. Helens found themselves 2-0 down at half-time to goals from ex-Blackburn and Leeds United striker Kevin Hird and former Burnley midfielder Andy Wharton. Worse was to come after the interval, as Hird scored his second before a resurgent Town netted three times in 15 minutes, through Brian Rigby, Tony Williams and Phil Layhe. Wharton then scored again for the visitors but Rigby’s second tied the scores at 4-4. Into extratime and still the drama was not over. Defender John Bendon was sent-off, reducing Town to 10 men, but up popped Jimmy Collins, who blasted home the winner from 30 yards out. Town won 5-4. Town’s team was: Andy Johnston; Paul Benson, Barry Lowe, John Bendon and Tony Williams; Jay McComb, Mark Gledhill, Tommy O’Neil and Jimmy Collins; Brian Rigby and Phil Layhe. Subs: Bryan Griffiths (for Gledhill) and Steve Baker. Scorers: Rigby 2, Williams, Layhe, Collins (J). General Chemicals were the visitors to Hoghton Road in the Preliminary Round on 20th September. The West Cheshire League side were considered a fairly safe passage, but a handball by Bendon gifted the Runcorn side the lead from the penalty spot. Gledhill soon equalised but Town could not put their plucky opponents to bed and the game went to extra-time again. Jimmy Collins scored the winner from the penalty spot after Layhe was brought down by the visiting goalkeeper, to give Town a narrow 2-1 victory.

Town fielded an unchanged team. Scorers: Gledhill, Collins (J). Another home draw in the First Round, against NWC Second Division side Blackpool Wren Rovers, on 24th October, was the reward. However, skipper Tommy O’Neil had been in dispute with the club in the weeks leading up to the game and, on a real quagmire of a Hoghton Road pitch, injury took its toll

1986-7 Revisited and he had to be replaced by Jimmy Collins’ twin brother, Dave. The game was goalless after 90 minutes and, for the third tie in succession, extra-time ensued. Two spectacular goals from Dave Collins (from around 30 yards out) and Marty Cummins, who lobbed the keeper from the half-way line, gave Town a 2-0 victory. Town’s team was: Johnston, Benson, Williams, Lowe and Bendon; Marty Cummins, O’Neil, Jimmy Collins, John Deakin; McComb and Layhe. Subs: Dave Collins (for O’Neil) and Gary Laird. Scorers: Cummins, Collins (D). PART 2 – Rounds 2, 3 and 4 Into Round 2 and another home draw, this time against Guisborough Town from Cleveland, members of the Northern League Second Division. The visitors had been to Wembley as losing Vase finalists in 1980 but, on a very windy day, it was St. Helens Town who took the initiative, hitting the bar twice before Phil Layhe scored just before half-time, latching on to Marty Cummins’ long ball before beating the ‘keeper from close range The second half was a tight affair, with the home team standing firm in a marvellous defensive performance, the only danger coming a few minutes before the end when Tony Williams had to clear off the goal-line. Town’s team was: Andy Johnston; Paul Benson, Tony Williams, Barry Lowe and John Bendon; Marty Cummins, Tommy O’Neil, Jimmy Collins and Brian Rigby; Jay McComb and Phil Layhe Subs: John Deakin and Dave Collins. Scorer: Layhe. Another round and, remarkably, a fifth consecutive home draw, Wythenshawe Amateurs from the Manchester League arriving at Hoghton Road on 13th December. On a very cold day, on a very muddy pitch, with heavy rain and sleet much in evidence, Town got off to the worst possible start, going one down after just seven minutes. However, better late than never, Jay McComb equalised from a Jimmy Collins corner 9 minutes later and Town were on their way. On 22 minutes, Tony Williams put the home side ahead with a spectacular volley and soon after half-time Jimmy Collins wrapped up the game at 4-1 with a brace of goals, his second from the penalty spot. Town fielded a near unchanged team, Stu Humphries taking over from Dave Collins on the bench. Scorers: Collins (J) 2, McComb, Williams. For Round 4, Town were called upon to travel away for the first time, making the long journey to Cambridgeshire to take on Wisbech Town of the Eastern Counties League at their Fenland Park ground. The home team were confident of success, having been beaten semi-finalists in each of the two previous campaigns, losing to Halesowen after a replay in 1985 and Southall in 1986. Tony Williams was unavailable, having gone under the surgeon’s knife for a cartilage operation and Paul Wilson took his place. Following the lengthy journey, delayed a week by heavy snow, St. Helens produced a tremendous defensive display to keep the scoresheet blank in the first half but Phil Layhe netted twice in the 67th and 90th minutes to steer Town to a 5th round slot.

Manager Alan Wellens brought in full-back Paul Wilson for his FA Vase debut, replacing Tony Williams but the rest of the team was unchanged, with Brian Griffiths taking over from Humphries on the bench. Scorer: Layhe 2. Glyn Jones

Match Report Finally a Comeback In Our Favour! by Kieran Ford Town come back from 2 men and 2 goals down to clinch last minute draw.

A run of 3 successive victories for St Helens Town was abruptly halted by Silsden last Saturday with a surprise 6-2 defeat at Edge Green Street. However they returned to Volair Park on Thursday night, facing 3rd bottom AFC Blackpool. The Blues made two changes from that Silsden defeat, with Adam Donohue missing the game with Dom Whelan filling in at right back. Liam Dodd also dropped to the bench with Paul Carney resuming his role partnering Ant Whelan in central midfield. Town started well in the game, as the aforementioned Paul Carney won the ball back in a terrier like fashion, the ball found Dale Korie-Butler who drove at the Blackpool defence but his shot was well wide of the far post. Dom Whelan, making his 1st start of the season, made a surging run from right back, played a quick one two with Andy Gillespie but his shot suffered the same fate as DKB as it sailed wide. The versatile Andy Presho, wearing number 3, remarkably his 8th shirt number of the season, played through captain Andy Gillespie. He used his strength to shrug off one defender before beating three more but his shot was deflected wide. Although Town were on top in terms of chances created, they were giving possession away cheaply, and this ultimately cost them in the 38th minute, AFC Blackpool manager Stuart Parker said “keep getting the ball over the top!” and his idea worked to perfection as Ricky Tomlinson (not that one!) played a ball over the Town defence, to find captain Jack Williams who lobbed the ball over Adam Fairchild to put the away side a goal to the good at half time. HT: St Helens Town 0 – 1 AFC Blackpool (Williams, 38) After a first half void of any real action, the 2nd half could go down as one of the most enthralling of the season. Andy Webster was replaced by Liam Dodd at the interval, in what can only be seen as an injury precaution with a trip to Sandbach United 2 days later. The 1st major talking point of the game came just over 5 minutes after the restart, as Ed Pegler was shown a 2nd booking of the match after pulling down Williams as he was through on goal. The referee adjudged the Town centre back to be the last man and gave him his marching orders. Minutes later, the referee was the centre of controversy again as Town were reduced to 9 men in bizarre circumstances, as captain Andy Gillespie was shown a 2nd yellow for an alleged stamp on the Blackpool goalkeeper Callum Kirkland, as he scored a goal that was disallowed for offside. Alas, Gillespie was sent off and Town now had a mountain to climb to salvage something from the game. To complete a mad 10 minute spell, AFC Blackpool extended their lead with a possible goal of the season contender. The ball was headed away from a Blackpool free kick, which allowed Robert Hanslip to unleash a volley from fully 35 yards that sailed into the top corner, to compound Town to misery. Even though they were 2 men and goals behind, St Helens continued to look spirited, and the introduction of striker George Ukaegbu gave Town a different option up front due to his height and pace. The striker, on his debut, managed to win Town a consolation penalty in the 90th minute as he was dragged down in the area. Ste Rigby (Man of the Man pictured right), playing on the left wing replacing the recently departed Dann Greene, stepped up and scored from the spot, giving Town a glimmer of hope heading into stoppage time. As Town gained some hope, they started to push for an equaliser, Rigby almost added to his tally as he controlled an Ant Whelan through ball well, but saw his name in lights and blazed over. Rigby did have involvement in Town’s dramatic leveller, as his stand up cross was headed in by the debutant Ukaegbu to send the crowd into ecstasy, and to finally secure a Town comeback of their own! FT: St Helens Town (Rigby, 90) (Ukaegbu, 90+3) 2–2 AFC Blackpool (Williams, 38) (Handslip, 57)

A Brief History The original St. Helens Town club was formed in 1901 and played at Park Road, behind the Primrose Vaults public house. Although it was known as the Primrose Ground, the players changed further down Park Road at the Black Horse pub. Playing in the Lancashire League and Lancashire Combination, the team enjoyed some early success, but struggled after the Great War and appears to have folded midway through the 1928/29 season. The club was re-formed by George Fryer and a group of local businessmen in 1946. They took out a lease of the former cricket ground at Hoghton Road, Sutton, adjacent to the St. Helens Junction railway station and, although it entered in the FA Cup in the 1946/47 season, a team could not be raised in time to fulfil its tie with Prescot Cables. Friendly games were played, then local team Derbyshire Hill Rovers were taken over in April 1947, those players forming the nucleus of the team which entered the Liverpool County Combination at the start of the 1947/48 season. St. Helens Town soon began to prosper and early results included a sensational 10-4 win over Everton “A” on 6th December 1947. Former German prisoner-of-war Bert Trautmann joined the club in the Summer of 1948, the strapping goalkeeper helping the team to win its first trophy, the George Mahon Cup, which was secured with a 2-1 win over Runcorn at Prescot on 7th May 1949. Crowds averaged Tommy O’Neil over 2000 that season, peaking with a league record Wembley,1987 attendance of 3012 against Burscough in October 1948. The following season, 1949/50, Town entered the Lancashire Combination and, despite losing Trautmann to Manchester City in October 1949, they won the Second Division title in some style the following season, three players, Albert Leadbetter (36), Harry McCann (32) and Terry Garner (31) all netting over 30 goals apiece. An alltime club record attendance of “between 8000 and 9000” witnessed a friendly game against Manchester City, arranged as part of the Trautmann transfer deal, in April 1950 and another 4000 witnessed a second match with City the following season. Although relegated by a slender margin from the First Division in 1951/52, the club continued to look forward, even contemplating Football League status and, in order to further its ambitions, moved to the former St. Helens Recs. rugby league ground at City Road. Initial crowds were encouraging but, despite success, the club decided to move back to Hoghton Road in October 1953, where they remained until April 2000. Town produced a number of fine players who joined Football League clubs, including Bill Foulkes (Manchester United), John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday) and John Connelly who joined Burnley, later transferring to Manchester United and who played in the England 1966 World Cup winning squad. More recently, Dave Bamber scored goals in all four divisions of the league with a host of different clubs, starting and ending his league career at Blackpool and in the last few years, Karl Ledsham, who had a productive career at conference level with Southport, Lincoln City, Barrow and Stockport County before moving to the USA. Following a second relegation in 1956, St. Helens Town continued to play in the Lancashire Combination, winning the Championship in 1971/72, by nine points ahead of Accrington Stanley. However, the formation of the Northern Premier League in 1968 led to a gradual drain of stronger clubs from the Combination and St. Helens joined the Cheshire League in 1975, becoming founder members of the North West Counties League seven years later. They held the proud record of being the only club to play in the NW Counties’ top flight every season until they were relegated in April

of St Helens Town

St Helens Town 1948 2015, conceding an injury-time equaliser to Silsden in the last game of the season, a match they had to win to stay up. Town enjoyed a golden era in the late 1980s, just missing out on an appearance in the First Round proper of the FA Cup in 1985/86, losing to Morecambe in a Fourth Qualifying Round Replay, but they obtained ample compensation by winning the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987, beating near neighbours Warrington Town 3-2, with two goals from Phil Layhe and one from Brian Rigby. They were regular promotion candidates for many years, largely due to the scoring exploits of Steve “Pellet” Pennington, who grabbed 216 goals in 351 games, his season’s best hauls of 45 in 1993/94 and 46 in 1997/98 just failing to beat the club record of 47 scored by Phil Stainton in 1963/64. The 2015/16 season saw St. Helens Town in the First Division of the North West Counties League and despite some inconsistent mid-season form, they finished the season with an outside chance of making the promotion play-off places, only to fall short in the final match, losing at home to eventual champions Hanley Town in a game they needed to win thereby missing out for the first time on a place in this season’s FA Cup competition. Nevertheless, team captain Andy Gillespie landed the First Division Golden Boot Trophy with 29 league goals, 34 in all matches. At the start of the 2016/17 season, Town are looking to return to the borough and the new ground at Ruskin Drive will at last be ready in early October. In the meantime, early -season games will be played at Prescot Cables and with nearly all of last season’s squad staying on, boosted by new signings in key areas, they will be hoping to be among the front-runners for promotion in the club’s 70th year since their reformation, coincidentally, the 30 th year since their FA Vase success. The nomadic years since the loss of their Hoghton Road base in 2000 are now behind them, the return to their traditional blue and white colours herald a new beginning and the future once again looks bright.

League News As the season nears its climax, Irlam manager Steve Nixon is satisfied with the direction the club is going in their first season in the Premier Division.

Promoted as runners-up to Hanley Town last season, Irlam made a solid start to the season and since then have never been below mid-table, although their form has dipped a little lately. Steve has been reflecting on the season, and outlining his expectations in the remaining games.

division.

"We're just over two thirds in to the campaign and I have mixed feelings going in to the last 12 fixtures. We started the campaign with moderate expectations, and I recall speaking to League official Ian Williams at one of our pre-season friendlies and he asked if I would I be pleased with finishing 19th in the

"I said we were hoping for a mid-table place at the end of the 42 games but ultimately finishing anything above the bottom three, I would take it. However, after completing the first 10 games we had only lost one and lay around 6th in the table. Maybe we got a bit carried away and our expectations suddenly were raised to think we had a chance of finishing much, much higher than 19th!! "The players have shown they can compete with the best sides in the division. The four games against Atherton Colls and Bootle are a case in point. The four fixtures have given us eight points, with two wins and two draws. The side performed extremely well, although I did fear for us having our first ever game in the division away to Bootle as they were one of the hot favourites for promotion. But the lads dug in when needed and grabbed a 2-1 win on the Wednesday night. "We have had a couple of good beatings to be honest, West Didsbury & Chorlton were flying at the time and they thumped us 6-0 at home, and Runcorn Linnets gave us a bit of a footballing lesson home and away. We have certainly noticed a difference from last season in the First Division. The intensity is there in every game and if you don’t focus for 90 minutes, every side in the Prem have strikers who will punish you. The sides are faster, stronger and more tactically aware. "Our first 14 games gave us 21 points, losing just 3 games. The next 14 gave us 15 points, and we lost 7. The strange thing was we only conceded 1 more goal but lost 4 more games. That’s how tight it can be. I have set the players a target of 20 points from the last 14 games, we have 3 points from our away win to Maine Road a couple of weeks ago and still have 12 games left. "That would give us 59 points, and we would then probably finish the season around mid-table with that points tally. Would I be satisfied? Yes, but still think we can do better. We have a strong squad at the club, and our Development side at U21’s and the U18’s are sides who are both doing very well in their respective leagues. Both can win the league and the 21’s have two semi-finals, so they are hoping for a league and cup double. The “pressure” on the first team squad is always there. The senior squad is pretty much the same as last season. The lads who got us promoted deserve a chance to compete in the Prem and they haven’t let themselves down at this stage.

Match Report v Another excellent game at Volair Park as Town and Alsager battle out a thrilling 2-2 draw. by Glyn Jones Match report sponsored by Top Car Detailing It was always going to be an uphill battle, facing a strong Alsager team, pushing hard for promotion, without the benefit of a game for nearly three weeks and having to cover for the suspended trio of captain Andy Gillespie, Dale Korie-Butler and Eddie Pegler, but once again, Town turned in a spirited performance and just when it appeared they might slip to an unfortunate defeat, they snatched a draw in a rousing finish. The game was a physical battle from the outset, with bone-crunching tackles the order of the day. That no player was injured was surprising in itself, but there were few complaints as both sets of players got stuck into the battle, which warmed up both participants and crowd on a chill night at Volair Park. Without leading scorer Andy Gillespie, Town fielded debutant Joel Douglas, who acquitted himself very well and, once the rustiness of 19 days without a game had begun to wear off and wings Ste Rigby and Luke Edwards began to push forward, assisted by Paul Carney in midfield, the home side began to make up for lost ground and gain the ascendency. Their patience was rewarded after 35 minutes with a move begun by Edwards, which involved quick passes between several players, eventually finding full-back Dom Whelan one-on-one with Alsager keeper Chris Fletcher on the edge of his six-yard box and as Whelan shaped to shoot, Fletcher

Alsager Town upended him and a penalty was awarded, which Rigby confidently despatched to put Town 1-0 up heading into half-time. The goal transformed the complexion of the game as, suddenly, Alsager were on the back foot. They emerged from the dressing room after the break much more determined and took a firm grip of the proceedings, launching wave after wave of attack and Adam Fairchild pulled off two magnificent saves and saw another shot sail just past his right-hand post. His luck finally ran out, however, in the 72nd minute when, from a corner, veteran striker Micky Lennon blasted a shot which Mark Grice deflected in off the same post and past Fairchild to level the scores at 1-1. Alsager were in almost total control at this stage and looked set to take the lead shortly afterwards until Andy Presho cleared impressively off his line. Town manager freshened up his troops and sent on George Ukaegbu for Douglas, the speedy Anthony Dunleavy soon followed, together with Michael Chojnicki and the injection of fresh legs and pace breathed new life into the game. Almost immediately, Dunleavy sprinted through and combined with Ukaegbu to set up an opening for Rigby and he looked certain to score, but the ball curled just over the bar. Then it was Carney’s turn and he went through the defence on a mesmerising run, only for his shot to be blocked and Edwards hit the rebound over the bar.

The match entered its last minute and, as in the previous home game, a dramatic finale was to be played out. This time, against the run of play, Alsager broke from deep inside their own half and Dave McPherson finished off an 80-yard move by scoring what looked to be the winning goal. However, the visitors had not reckoned with the fighting spirit of this St. Helens team. Deep into the fourth minute of added time, a break down the right saw a ball played over the top of the defenders to Liam Dodd, who drew the advancing Fletcher and lobbed him from 20 yards, the ball nestling in the back of the net to secure another remarkable draw which, in the circumstances, felt almost like a victory. Town are looking to raise funds by opening a souvenir shop at forthcoming games. If anyone has old Town programmes and memorabilia, please contact Glyn Jones on 07504 231296 or call up to Volair Park (Hope Street) Prescot on match days, when your offerings will be thankfully received and faithfully applied to fit out the facilities at the new ground ready for next season. The shop will be in operation in the bar area before all remaining home games this season.

Match Report v Dale Bails as Sandbach Move Into Automatic Promotion Fast Lane By Kieran Ford St Helens Town see red for 2nd time in 3 days as Josh Lane scores winner for Sandbach. After salvaging a last gasp 2-2 draw vs AFC Blackpool less than 48 hours earlier, St Helens Town faced a tough task against a Sandbach United side that had only lost once in 2017. Although they were sent off 2 days prior, both Andy Gillespie and Ed Pegler were eligible to play, and they duly did as Alan Gillespie made 2 changes from Thursday night. These were Liam Dodd replacing the injured Andy Webster in central defence and Alex Gillespie partnering “Pablo” Paul Carney in central midfield in place of Ant Whelan. Ever since the departure of winger Danny Greene last week, Ste Rigby has been given the licence to move further up the field from his usual left back role. This has been one he has thrived upon ever since and started this game no differently as Town looked to exploit the left wing to their advantage. However, this was thwarted through Sandbach’s marauding right back Matthew Pearson and a solid centre back display from Martin Evans to keep Rigby quiet. This quickly led to a period of Sandbach pressure as Town couldn’t get out of their own half, and Alex Gillespie had to block a Nathan Jones effort off the line to prevent the hosts taking the lead. Town did create chances of their own, as Dale Korie-Butler cut inside from the left and his cross found Ste Rigby but his shot was blocked out for a corner. From the resulting set piece Town took the lead as Liam Dodd rose highest to meet a Luke Edwards cross to net his first goal for the club. Sandbach looked for an immediate response as Pearson headed the ball down to George Riley but his shot was skewed wide. Then Adam Fairchild produced arguably the save of the match

Sandbach United as he tipped Matthew Pearson’s header just wide of the post to keep the scores level. Pearson eventually got his name on the scoresheet in similar circumstances to Liam Dodd as he towered in a header from a corner to level the scores going into half time. HT: Sandbach United (Pearson, 31) 1 -1 St Helens Town (Dodd, 18) The second half was quite an even contest to start with, as St Helens arguably created the best chance of the opening exchanges. A telepathic understanding between brothers Alex and Andy Gillespie allowed the latter to dummy an inch perfect through ball into the path of Ste Rigby. The Town number 7 put in a teasing cross but Luke Edwards couldn’t connect with the pass. Sandbach took the lead on the hour mark as striker Josh Lane tapped home a deep cross at the back post as the bumper crowd of 134 saw the hosts take the lead. St Helens Town had only saw 2 red cards all season, but they have now had 3 men sent off 2 in days as Dale Korie Butler was shown his marching orders on 64 minutes. After receiving a strong challenge from a Sandbach United defender, DKB retaliated with an alleged headbutt which resulted in a straight red card. After this the game petered out as Sandbach looked comfortable on the ball, the late introduction of Anthony Dunleavy for Town was an attempt to grab an equaliser, however this was not forthcoming as its not 3 games without a win for St Helens. FT: Sandbach United (Pearson, 31) (Lane, 60) 2-1 St Helens Town (Dodd, 18)

Manager’s Notes Hi everybody welcome again to Volair Park for tonight's fixture against Stockport Town. All credit to Stockport they are on a fine run of form after a swift recovery from the pre-Christmas turmoil at their club. This will be our first meeting of the season with our visitors but from all accounts they are likely to prove to be formidable opposition. Last season Stockport beat us comfortably twice so hopefully we can show a big improvement tonight. Our last home game against Alsager Town was yet another pulsating Thursday affair at Cables. This time we took the lead with a Ste Rigby penalty after Dom Whelan was brought down rounding the Alsager goalkeeper. With four regular players out of the reckoning three of them suspended it was always going to be a very difficult challenge but the lads once again showed their fantastic fighting spirit after conceding two second half goals when Liam Dodd pushing up from centre back lobbed a superb finish to gain a 2-2 draw. Our late equaliser came after a sustained late spell of pressure when we created some really good chances after weathering a sustained spell of very direct Alsager pressure. Overall I was very pleased with the performance and the result was gained once again on a tricky surface. The match was a debut game for Joel Douglas who signed in from Northwich 1874. Joel worked very hard and I'm sure he will prove a valuable addition to the squad in the final 6 weeks of the season. There were plenty of other impressive performances from the team as well. I was particularly pleased at the way the back four dealt with the aerial threat and some great stops from Adam. The three man centre midfield Of Ant Whelan, Pablo and Alex Gilly had a nice balance about it as well offering good defensive cover.

With 11 games left 9 of them in April I will be looking to strengthen the squad if possible for what is a very testing run in. The quality of teams in this division has drastically improved this season and with the automatic promotion, play offs and relegation issues not likely to be settled until the last game it is going be an exciting six weeks. Enjoy the game and hopefully the three points.

League News Toffees licked by Remy It’s not often we can trot out a variation on one of the most commonly used newspaper headlines involving Everton in the context of our league, but there’s no better way to sum a fantastic night in the history of Litherland REMYCA after their 10 win over the Toffees in the quarter final of the Liverpool Senior Cup. A crowd of 414 witnessed Phil Stafford’s men take the not inconsiderable scalp of an experienced Everton side, and they can now look forward to another big game in the semi-final when they face Southport at Haig Avenue – who, of course, they beat last season in the same competition on another memorable night at Litherland Sports Centre. Sitting at the top of the First Division table, and a tasty cup tie to look forward to - the games can’t come quickly enough for the men in red at the moment. Every Away Day is a Winding Road When they joined our league in the summer, everyone at Carlisle City was well aware of the journeys they would need to make on a regular basis up and down the M6 over the course of the season, and on Saturday they made their longest yet, a 170 mile trip to face FC Oswestry Town at the Venue. Not since the days that Workington were in our league in the late 1990s has a side had to make such a long trip for a league fixture, and unfortunately for James Tose’s men, they weren’t able to head back home with a victory, as second half goals from Town’s Daniel Tinsley and Jack Harris cancelled out Simon Tucker’s opener for City. Hopefully the City boys enjoyed the day out anyway, and with a 162 mile trip to Eccleshall scheduled for Saturday 25th March, they can now start planning for another long away day. Charnock back on track One team who seem to have put a mid-season blip out of their system are Charnock Richard, who moved themselves right back into the promotion frame with a 3-2 win at league leaders Litherland REMYCA on Saturday.

As we moved into March, Andy Westwell’s men had only won once in five games since the turn of the year, but successive wins at home to FC Oswestry Town and then at Remy suggests that rumours of their demise were greatly exaggerated. The First Division promotion chase is an absolutely fascinating one, and Charnock look like they will be right in the thick of it. League News 1874 Northwich FC have announced that Ian Street has decided to step down as Manager of the club. A club statement said: "We have accepted Ian's decision, and at the same time we would acknowledge the tremendous amount of work that he has put into the club since his appointment in April 2013. "He has shown so much passion and commitment in ensuring that the club has become a respected member of the Hallmark Security League. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Ian and wish him the very best for the future.

"We can also advise that Assistant Manager Paul Bowyer and Coach Wayne Goodison will now assume responsibility as Joint Managers with full support from the Football Club" Ian Street said: "I had informed the committee a few weeks ago that my plan was to step down at the end of the season, and allow a smooth transition to my replacement. "After moving house in the summer, the job had become difficult due to the increased travel. I have made the decision to finish earlier than planned, and I now wish to find a new challenge. We have come such a long way in a short time. From non-existent to be regarded as one of the strongest clubs in the North West Counties Premier Division is testament to all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes. There are some really good people at the club, and I thank them and wish them all the best for the future". During Saturday's game between 1874 Northwich and Runcorn Linnets, both sets of supporters joined forces in support of a campaign started by 1874 Northwich goalkeeper Greg Hall. Greg, a teaching assistant at St Cuthberts School, Withington, Manchester had recently been sporting a natty Blue Bandana during games. News got out that Greg was wearing the headgear in support of a young girl named Gracie who has terminal cancer. Greg had pledged to donate ÂŁ10 each time he played, to a fund started in her name that will be supporting Gracie's family and The Brain Tumour Trust. The full story of Greg's fundraising for the campaign known as Gracie's Goal can be found by clicking here. The support provided by both sets of fans was superb and 1874 Northwich are pleased to announce that a total of ÂŁ725 was raised, via a combination of the match day collection, the sale of bandanas in support of Greg and a number of very generous donations from amongst others, Maine Road FC and Padiham FC. A cheque for the ÂŁ725 will be presented to Greg so that he can in turn pass it on to Gracie's family. 1874 Northwich FC would like to thank both sets of fans, Runcorn Linnets FC and everyone whose generous donations have resulted in raising this tremendous amount. Greg is pictured in his bandana receiving his recent Goalkeeper of the Month award from League Management Committee representative Ian Williams.
