Talk of the Town Good afternoon, and welcome to Ruskin Drive for this our first ever contest at the venue and our first home game back in St Helens for far too long! May I open by welcoming our friends and visitors from Congleton Town, I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. It has been a long arduous journey since we last hosted a game within the Town an FA Cup Preliminary Round tie at Knowsley Road against Glossop North End on 28th August 2010 which kicked off at lunchtime and end in a 1-1 draw. The journey has not yet finished as the new dressing room complex has yet to be completed and this along with the ground in general will need to pass a ground grading prior to us being allowed to play completive NWCFL games here at Ruskin.

It feels like it has been a short summer break since we completed the season down going down 3-2 to division one runner-up outfit Charnock Richard at Prescot Cables on 29th April. Things have moved fast with some changes both on and off the field. I am happy to report that Alan has managed to retain the vast majority of the squad from last term and has added a few useful additions some of whom may be familiar faces as they return to the club after spells away. One of the most important changes has taken place off the field with Chairman John McKiernan having stepped down after serving 10 years in the role a similar period as Vice-Chairman and having been involved with the club long before both roles having fulfilled many a task behind the scenes at the

Talk of the Town 2017-18

club. John is going to be a hard act to follow having been key in some of the great off the field work the club has produced over the past few seasons including building up the excellent social media profile the club enjoys and generating much needed funds through sponsorship for the club. John will still be a familiar face around the club on a matchday but will probably be enjoying the extra hours he has away from the pitch being a Grandfather which he is due to become in the near future. On a personal note I would like to register my thanks for all that John had done for the club and for making me feel so welcome deep in the mists of time back at the start of my tenure at the club. Back to on-field matters as this afternoon sees the start of the pre-season programme with the visit of Premier Division Congleton Town. They were managed by former Town player Andy Alston last term and finished in 16th position and a change in the dugout has seen another familiar name in Ian Street take up the reigns as the Bears look to push on and take themselves back up into the Northern Premier League where they feel they belong.

As for us its nice to be back where we belong in St Helens and our aims for the season must be to complete at the top end of the table in what we know will be a massively competitive division, we have new members in Abbey Hulton United who are scheduled to be our first league visitors here at Ruskin Drive on Thursday 17th August all being well along with the relegated sides in Cammell Lairds, Nelson & New Mills and the teams who were close to going up last season such as Litherland REMYCA, Whitchurch Alport etc. who will be looking to push on this term and go that one step better. Let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them on to our first victory at Ruskin Drive! Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

Chairman’s Welcome Welcome to our new ground at Ruskin Drive and welcome to today’s opponents Congleton Town. Welcome also to first-time visitors to St. Helens Town Football Club. Today sees us embark on our seventy-first season of continuous existence as a club in what the great majority of the public see as a rugby league town; yet football is the country’s national game and now that we are back in town after seven years leading a nomadic existence at both ends of Ashton-inMakerfield and up the road at Prescot, we aim to show that we are back to stay and we can more than hold our own in a rugby hotbed. Two years ago, we lost our place in the NW Counties Premier Division (Step 5 of the FA’s Non-League Pyramid) after 33 years’ unbroken membership at that level – the only club since the formation of the league to have enjoyed such continuous tenure – and we have been genuinely surprised as to how difficult it has been to mount a promotion challenge to regain that status. Last season in particular was wonderfully

Talk of the Town 2017-18

competitive for the newly-named Hallmark Security Football League Division 1, with six new clubs, all pushing for top honours. It will be no less difficult this time around with the struggle for promotion and play-off spots demanding a good start to the season, when league fixtures kick off in four weeks’ time. These pre-season games, therefore, take on great significance, ahead of the opening game at newly-relegated New Mills and our first home fixture with league new boys Abbey Hulton United on Thursday, 17th August. I welcome you today, of course, as Chairman of the club. I took over quite unexpectedly as Interim Chairman at the end of our monthly meeting on 5th June when John McKiernan announced his resignation. He took everybody by surprise when he stood down, after completing 10 years in the job. The club owes John a massive debt of gratitude. He has carried this club, almost single-handedly at times, through some of the hardest times in its 70year history, when it faced its greatest challenges. All those years in exile, all those financial crises, seemingly-endless, annual searches for sponsorships, quite how he found the time for family life, work, holidays and everything else I will never know, but the club is still here, strong and embarking on a new chapter in its existence. Enjoy the game, come back again on Thursday and come back again whenever you can… You won’t find better value for a fiver these days! And if you like what you see, get involved, become part of it. Sponsor a match-ball, sponsor a game, ask how you can help. Glyn Jones

Commercial Corner I was both delighted and excited to be appointed as Business Development and Commercial Manager of St Helens Town AFC especially at such a historic time in the clubs’ history. My role in bringing in advertising and sponsorship to the club is both rewarding and challenging. The club has many opportunities for people and businesses to sign up to, all of which will support the football club in many ways. Sponsorship is very important to a club like ours, as it brings in much needed revenue, whilst promoting both the club and the sponsors. We are very experienced sponsorship partners offering a full range of packages starting from just £50 per season. The market for sponsorship of non-league clubs is always tough but we feel our experience over recent seasons with a range of partners has shown we offer great value and a superb potential return on investment. We are thrilled to welcome Unite the Union to the club as first team kit sponsors and we are looking forward to a partnership which will reap benefits for both parties.

Talk of the Town 2017-18

We work hard for all our sponsors and I am confident the club will prove to be an excellent partner in promoting the work undertaken by Unite. The two-year sponsorship deal is a real boost for the club and provides us with an excellent platform as we look forward to a bright future at our new home. I have also been working on a partnership with a local branch of a national charity and I hope to announce full details of this soon so please keep an eye out on our social media sites and the local press. Some of the sponsorship packages we have available are:

 

Digital Match Programme Sponsor Match Day Programme Advertising: Full page, Half page or Quarter page. Pitch side Advertising Boards:

  Executive Match Sponsor:  Match Ball Sponsor:  Match Fixture Board Sponsor  Match Programme Sponsor  Season Ticket Sponsor  Youth /U18s / U21s or Reserve Team   

Shirt Sponsors Player of the Month Awards Man of the Match Awards Individual Player Sponsorship

If you wish to discuss any of these packages or have an interest in any other form of partnership and how they can benefit you and your business, please feel free to contact me at any time. Simon Kenyon

Manager’s Notes Welcome to our new home Ruskin Sports Village for our first Pre season friendly against Hallmark Security League Premier Division outfit Congleton Town. Our visitors today are now under the new management of the highly respected Ian Street formerly manager 1874 Northwich. The pre season for Town has been a mixed affair in truth with the resignation of the Under 21s Manager John McLaughan together with the departure of all the U21 team,

We’ve seen the loss of key 1firstteam players especially Young Player of the Year Ste Rigby one of our most consistent performers last season. Other key departures are highly rated centre back Ant Whelan and forward George Ukaegbu who are both unable to commit to the rigours of twice weekly training and travel to matches. I thank all the players who have left for all their efforts last season and wish them all the best for the future. On a much brighter note we have recruited some outstanding new players to the squad including Sean Kelly, Liam Parkinson, Matty Smith, Mark Edzes, Danny Forrester and Danny Norris. I am also delighted to have retained the core end of season team and I really appreciate the fact that some of the lads have turned down decent money elsewhere to stay with us. Today's game was always going to be difficult one but we are up for the challenge and it will be a good test for the lads. Enjoy the game . . .Alan Gillespie

August Fixtures With the announcement of the opening round of fixtures for the FA Cup and FA Vase concluded, clubs from both the Premier and First Division of the Hallmark Security League were now looking forward to the unveiling of the league fixtures for the first month of the 2017-18 season. Whilst the Premier League fixture announcement was glammed up from Sky Sports and various other media outlets, and even had its own Twitter hashtag, the North West Counties fixtures were released in a rather different way. The fixtures for the 20 Premier League clubs were announced at 9pm on a Wednesday, with football fans from up and down the country attempting to discreetly check their clubs opening day fixture in work or school. This was covered throughout the whole day by Sky Sports News, I’m sure the news readers could memorise the full set by the end of the day! However, fixtures for the Hallmark Security League were teased half an hour before an 8pm release on a Saturday night, which I thought was brilliant. As officials from all clubs enjoyed their final Saturday night pint without that afternoon’s result on their mind before the grind began again, they were forced to put down their drink, or tell their significant other to “hang on” whilst checking their phones with a buzz of excitement. This announcement was even more significant for the fans of St Helens Town, who were wondering if the Blues would play their first competitive match at Ruskin Drive on the opening day, or were possibly facing the furthest round trip in the league to Carlisle City in a repeat of last season’s opener. The Town faithful found out that the team would be facing a challenging opening fixture, as they travel to recently relegated New Mills on August 12th. St Helens have bad memories of Church Lane, as this was the scene of their joint heaviest ever defeat, losing 9-0 at the ground in March 2011 whilst

Talk of the Town 2017-18

playing in the Premier Division. Times have changed dramatically for both teams since, with New Mills achieving a promotion but suffering 2 relegations in this time. As a result, this will be an interesting affair as both teams seek promotion to the Premier Division. Town’s first competitive match at Ruskin was revealed to be against another team that is new to the division in Staffordshire based Abbey Hulton United. The Staffordshire County Super League champions will be coming into the division with bags of optimism as they look to replicate the successes of new teams such as City of Liverpool and Sandbach United in the division last season. St Helens’ 3rd scheduled match is away to Eccleshall, who narrowly avoided relegation from the First Division last campaign. Town won all 3 matches against the Eagles last season with an aggregate score of 10-3, including twice at Pershall Park. However, Eccleshall may take inspiration from Whitchurch Alport, who finished in the relegation zone 2 seasons ago but mounted a promotion charge last season. Can Eccleshall do the same or will Town pick up an early season victory?? Town’s first midweek game of the season is away to Atherton LR on Tuesday 29th August to finish off the month. LR, like Eccleshall, finished towards the bottom of the table last season and will be looking to achieve a better finish this campaign, which Town will have to be wary of the team from Crilly Park looking for a positive start. In terms of the FA Vase draw, Town have been pitted against Hemsworth Miners Welfare at Ruskin Drive on Saturday 9th September. The 1st Qualifying Round Tie will be one that Town will look to progress from after losing to Chadderton 5-3 at the same stage last season. Announced Fixtures: 12th August: New Mills (a) 19th August: Abbey Hulton United (h) 26th August: Eccleshall (a) 29th August: Atherton LR (a) 9th September: Hemsworth Miners Welfare (h) – Buildbase FA Vase 1st Qualifying Round Kieran Ford

Brief History Of Town The original St. Helens Town club was formed in 1901 and played at Park Road, behind the Primrose Vaults public house. Although it was known as the Primrose Ground, the players changed further down Park Road at the Black Horse pub. Playing in the Lancashire League and Lancashire Combination, the team enjoyed some early success, but struggled after the Great War and appears to have folded midway through the 1928/29 season. The club was re-formed by George Fryer and a group of local businessmen in 1946. They took out a lease of the former cricket ground at Hoghton Road, Sutton, adjacent to the St. Helens Junction railway station and, although it entered in the FA Cup in the 1946/47 season, a team could not be raised in time to fulfil its tie with Prescot Cables. Friendly games were played, then local team Derbyshire Hill Rovers were taken over in April 1947, those players forming the nucleus of the team which entered the Liverpool County Combination at the start of the 1947/48 season. St. Helens Town soon began to prosper and early results included a sensational 10-4 win over Everton “A” on 6th December 1947. Former German prisoner-ofwar Bert Trautmann joined the club in the Summer of 1948, the strapping goalkeeper helping the team to win its first trophy, the George Mahon Cup, which was secured with a 2-1 win over Runcorn at Prescot on 7th May 1949. Crowds averaged over 2000 that season, peaking with a league record attendance of 3012 against Burscough in October 1948. The following season, 1949/50, Town entered the Lancashire Combination and, despite

losing Trautmann to Manchester City in October 1949, they won the Second Division title in some style the following season, three players, Albert Leadbetter (36), Harry McCann (32) and Terry Garner (31) all netting over 30 goals apiece. An all-time club record attendance of “between 8000 and 9000” witnessed a friendly game against Manchester City, arranged as part of the Trautmann transfer deal, in April 1950 and another 4000 witnessed a second match with City the following season. Although relegated by a slender margin from the First Division in 1951/52, the club continued to look forward, even contemplating Football League status and, in order to further its ambitions, moved to the former St. Helens Recs. rugby league ground at City Road. Initial crowds were encouraging but, despite success, the club decided to move back to Hoghton Road in October 1953, where they remained until April 2000. Town produced a number of fine players who joined Football League clubs, including Bill Foulkes (Manchester United), John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday) and John Connelly who joined Burnley, later transferring to Manchester United and who played in the England 1966 World Cup winning squad. More recently, Dave Bamber scored goals in all four divisions of

the league with a host of different clubs, starting and ending his league career at Blackpool and in the last few years, Karl Ledsham, who had a productive career at conference level with Southport, Lincoln City, Barrow and Stockport County before moving to the USA. Following a second relegation in 1956, St. Helens Town continued to play in the Lancashire Combination, winning the Championship in 1971/72, by nine points ahead of Accrington Stanley. However, the formation of the Northern Premier League in 1968 led to a gradual drain of stronger clubs from the Combination and St. Helens joined the Cheshire League in 1975, becoming founder members of the North West Counties League seven years later. They held the proud record of being the only club to play in the NW Counties’ top flight every season until they were relegated in April 2015, conceding an injury-time equaliser to Silsden in the last game of the season, a match they had to win to stay up. Town enjoyed a golden era in the late 1980s, just missing out on an appearance in the First Round proper of the FA Cup in 1985/86, losing to Morecambe in a Fourth Qualifying Round Replay, but they obtained ample compensation by winning the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987, beating near neighbours Warrington Town 3-2, with two goals from Phil Layhe and one from Brian Rigby. They were regular promotion candidates for many years, largely due to the scoring exploits of Steve “Pellet” Pennington, who grabbed 216 goals in 351 games, his season’s best hauls of 45 in 1993/94 and 46 in 1997/98 just failing to beat the club record of 47 scored by Phil Stainton in 1963/64.

Talk of the Town Celebrating 702017-18 years, 1946-2016

The 2015/16 season saw St. Helens Town in the First Division of the North West Counties League and despite some inconsistent midseason form, they finished the season with an outside chance of making the promotion play-off places, only to fall short in the final match, losing at home to eventual champions Hanley Town in a game they needed to win thereby missing out for the first time on a place in this season’s FA Cup competition. Nevertheless, team captain Andy Gillespie landed the First Division Golden Boot Trophy with 29 league goals, 34 in all matches. At the start of the 2016/17 season, Town are looking to return to the borough and the new ground at Ruskin Drive will at last be ready in early October. In the meantime, early-season games will be played at Prescot Cables and with nearly all of last season’s squad staying on, boosted by new signings in key areas, they will be hoping to be among the front-runners for promotion in the club’s 70th year since their reformation, coincidentally, the 30th year since their FA Vase success. The nomadic years since the loss of their Hoghton Road base in 2000 are now behind them, the return to their traditional blue and white colours herald a new beginning and the future once again looks bright.

In Town Today Events which led to the formation of Congleton Town Football Club, began in the 1890's, the St James' North Street School amalgamated with another local club, the Messrs Pointons Joiners Shop. They played on West Heath before housing was built in that area, and then became Congleton Hornets Football Club. The Hornets played at the Willow Street ground famed in Congleton, and competed in the South Cheshire League and recorded its' record league win, 10-0 against Audley in the 1897/98 season. Congleton Town Football Club succeeded the Hornets in 1901, playing in the Crewe and District League for four years, the first three of which saw the club lift the League Championship. The Club then moved into the North Staffordshire League in 1905, and won the League Championship in the 1919/20 season. The following year they joined the Cheshire County League, regarded at the time as the best League outside the Football League. The following season they finished runners-up and won the coveted Cheshire Senior Cup in their first appearance in the Final. The Club then suffered a barren spell until the Senior Cup was won again in 1938. Success after the War did not descend on Booth Street until the 1971/72 season when the Club, now playing in the Mid-Cheshire League, won the League Cup after being runners-up in the League both that season and in the previous season. Three MidCheshire League Championships then came to Booth Street in the 1973/74, 1975/76 and 1977/78 seasons, together with the League Cup and the Cheshire Saturday Cup. Although this was the most successful period of the Club's history as regards silverware, the truly successful period began in the 1981/82 campaign, when the Second Division of the Cheshire

County League was gained on the last game of the season, and Town were narrowly beaten to the Cup by Macclesfield Town. That was the last season of the Cheshire County League before the North West Counties League came into existence. As founder members of this new League, Congleton finished the first three campaigns in mid-table and then were narrowly beaten to the Championship by Clitheroe on goal difference in the 1985/86 season. The Club then had its, application to join the Northern Premier League rejected, but joined the higher league when the First Division of the NFL was formed in 1987. The highlight of the 1989/90 season was to reach the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the first time in the Club's history. Although beaten 2-0 by Crewe Alexandra, that achievement re -kindled local interest in the Club upon which its management hoped to build. The Final of the NPL's First Division Cup was also reached in this season, but the 'Bears' were beaten 5-1 on aggregate by Harrogate Town. The 'Bears' enjoyed exciting times in the First Division, initially finishing in mid-table but then, playing to avoid relegation as the seasons come to a close. Between 1993 and 1997 a new Board of Directors brought financial and managerial stability to the Club, whilst the present Directors aim to continue this work and improve the Club's fortunes in the years ahead. The club had a good season in 1999/2000 but fell away badly the following year. Despite reaching a best ever 4th Round of the FA Trophy before defeat by Worksop Town, they struggled badly in the league. The club appointed Sean Connor as manger in February 2001 but he could not prevent them finishing bottom of the UniBond League and relegation became a reality. The early season of 2001/02 saw the club take just 9 points from 17 league matches and early exit from FA Cup and FA Vase. Sean Connor was replaced as manager by Kevin Langley, ex Everton and Man City. The club made a fine revival and had reached virtual safety before Langley's shock move to Kidsgrove Athletic. Bryan Griffiths took

www.sthelenstownafc.com

over as manager and gained the points to make safety a certainty and stake a strong claim to keep the manager's job. He was formally appointed at the end of the season. Gary Bickerstaffe joined him as assistant and in September 2002 he invited Kevin Langley to return as a player and to help with coaching. When Griffiths left to join Rossendale Utd, Kevin Langley was reappointed as manager and Mark Cox joined to complete an experienced management team. Off the field the club continued to enjoy growing support from sponsors and steady improvements in its facilities, culminating with the signing of a two-year deal with Macclesfield based SSG Group of Companies during the summer of 2003. During the summer of 2002, the clubhouse underwent major refurbishment and is seen by the club as a major step towards increasing its revenue potential. The changing facilities were redesigned and upgraded. The team reached the fifth Round of the FA Vase, beat three higher league sides in reaching the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, the semi-finals of the Cheshire Senior Cup and the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup. In all cup competitions other than the FA Cup, only the eventual finalists beat the Bears. With promotion missed, a number of players left the club in the summer of 2004 leaving Kevin Langley with the task of rebuilding the side for the 2004/05 campaign. After a poor start and early exits from all major cup competitions, Karl Wilcox replaced Kevin Langley after he resigned in November 2005. In a further twist in an already difficult season, Karl Wilcox resigned after 11 defeats in 12 games. Paul Moore was appointed for the remainder of the season and he guided the team to safety before confirmation of his appointment signalled

the start of rebuilding of a side aiming to challenge for honours. 2005/06 started brightly with SSG adding a third year to its already valuable sponsorship, but swift exits from cup competitions were a disappointment. After many changes in personnel, the team settled to end the season with a creditable run in that held promise for 2006/07. The start of a football academy for 6-15 year olds and the introduction of a reserve side were positive steps to help build the teams of the future. 2006/07 saw new sponsors STD Limited, part of the Pallex network, entering a 2-year deal which they then extended a further year. The supporters trust provided kit for the reserve team. After a steady start to the 2006/07 campaign, Paul Moore left to manage Leek Town and Andy Lee took over the managerial reins as the club strived to maintain continuity. The Bears lifted their first piece of silverware for some time when they won the MidCheshire Senior Cup after defeating Witton Albion 3-0 at Wincham Park. At the end of the season Andy Lee stepped down as he announced a proposed move to Blackpool and Anthony Buckle and Darren Twigg were appointed with the task of rekindling the on-field performances. Off the field new floodlights were installed and the stand behind the bottom goal was re-roofed. After a reasonable season, despite a poor final run in, both Anthony and Darren stayed with the club and continued to build a side with promotion the target within the next couple of years. That plan was maintained in 2008/09 as the Bears ended a creditable 4th, just 1 point away from a 3rd place finish. A final run in of just 1 league

field organisation, the club starts the new season with a new found enthusiasm and optimism for 2012/13. That was not borne out completely, so strengthening was needed for 2013/14.

With two new key local businessmen, Nick Shatwell and Martin Lenton teaming up to add impetus to the club's ambition, significant development of the clubs facilities were started. A redesigned entrance, turnstiles and car park were the first step. Refurbishment of the club house followed and tarmac has been laid in the car park. For the start of 20010/11 the club now has a hospitality suite for sponsors and a new boardroom. With Ant and Twiggy remaining at the helm, they have been busy strengthening the squad for a serious attempt to lift some silverware and to complete the ambition for a return to Northern Premier League football. However, after an indifferent season in 2010/11 the pair tendered their resignation.

Having been awarded grade E for their ground in March 2013, ready for the next tier in the pyramid, strengthening of the playing squad was a priority and over the close season some additional players were brought in to complement the majority that were staying. Both Jim and Steve Hardy, now with Andy Alston on the coaching staff, look to improve on last year's achievements with promotion still the obvious goal. With the opportunity to continue strengthening the squad for 2014/15, Jim has signed players that will improve the overall quality of the squad and once again push for that elusive promotion place for a return to Northern Premier League football, the season saw Jim step down in November with Steve Hardy and Mike McDonald taking over an improvement was achieved with an 8th placed finish and 2015-16 season saw The Bears improve to 6th place in the table.

2011/12 saw the club jointly managed by Joe Paladino and Adriano Rigoglioso. Assisted by Joe Gibiliru, the playing side were completely reformed but indifferent results led to Dean Sibson placed in temporary charge in early November before Jim Vince was appointed in February 2012. His was tasked with rebuilding the side ready for a real push for promotion in 2012/13. He was initially assisted by Neil Gill and Steve Hardy before Neil left the club mid season. With the addition of Gateley Solicitors and PKF Accountants forming new partnerships with the club, the erection of a new spectator covered standing area and strengthening off Season 2002-03 2003-04 2004-05 2005-06 2006-07 2007-08 2008-09 2009-10 2010-11 2011-12 2012-13 2013-14 2014-15 2015-16 2016-17
